Logging Signons And Stored Procedure Executions

Oct 25, 1999

I'm looking for a facility similar to NT audit facility except for SQL Server 6.5.

Is there a tool or facility that will track when users log in (using SQL Server security), and either which stored procedures they execute or which tables they select?

Logging Sql Query Executions

Jan 30, 2008

Hi,I'm looking for a way to log exactly which sql queries are executed on a specific asp.net page request. Actually I'm not looking for anything advanced here, just a log which writes all the queries to a text-file would be good enough for me. Does anyone know of a tool for visual studio that could help me with this or is there a way to build a logger like this by hooking into ADO.NET in some way? This would help me out a whole lot now as I with this log could see that my cache logic really is working as it should. thanks!

Logging Difference Between Designer And SQL Agent Package Executions

Dec 12, 2006

After fine-tuning my package logging, I built a query against SYSDTSLOG9 that uses the combination of the OnPreExecute events and any subsequent event for each task to build a nice view of a package in progress, including the duration of each event. (Running tasks would have a row with a NULL EndTime.)

When running the package within the Designer, everything works as expected. Events are logged at the task level and everything bubbles-up to the package level.

However, when I run the package from SQL Agent (using the SSIS job step), none of my OnPreExecute or sub-component events are written. That is, I only get package-level OnInformation, OnPostExecute and OnError events.

This means when the job/package is executing, I can't directly see which steps are currently in progress nor can I get a duration for each step once it's completed. This will be very disconcerting for my teammates who will have to help support this at some point.

Any idea how or why there would be a change in behavior between these two execution methods?

Thanks in advance for any help. Until then, banging my head against the wall...

MSSQLServer Logging Many Missing Stored Procedure Messages

DTS Packages Executions

Jun 22, 2007

I have a weird situation. I have migrated some DTS packages from a sql 7.0 server to SQL2005. One of them works as a DTS package but fails under the job sections with an error saying could not connect to the database server. I have no option but to rewrite the whole package in SSIS(which I hate).

Any ideas.

Logging Stored Procedures

Jun 14, 2007

Hi

We have a database that has over a 1000 stored procedures. Most of them are used but not all of them. Because it would take to much time to investigate which are used or not, I want to log each execution of a stored procedure for a month. This way I can see which procedures are used and which are not.

Is there a way to do this???

I thought of using a DML trigger that fires after an 'exec' statement but it seems that it can be only triggered after a create, alter or drop statement.

Thanks!

Logging In Stored Procedures

Nov 10, 2006

Hi All

Not sure if this has been asked but quite honestly, I have tried several searches and too many hits are returned.

I use 3 separate stored procs for a process in a .net program where sp1 inserts the header. Then, looping through the details, I use sp2 to insert the detail records and then for each detail, I loop through other sub-records and insert with sp3.

I would like to place the whole update within a transaction so that an error on sp3 will rollback the entire thing.

My Problem: Each of sp1, 2 and 3 call another stored proc, say spLog which logs the process and the error messages. When I roll back, how can I prevent my logs from rolling back?

Any help will be appreciated

Multiple Executions Of Same Package Using DTEXEC

Dec 17, 2006

Hi,

I have a file-deployed package which I need to call N times at once using DTEXEC.  When I attempt to execute N instances of the package, the second instance doesn't execute.  I can execute different packages at the same time, but never the same package more than once.  Does anyone know how to get this scenario working?  Just to clarify a bit more - I can call the package as many times as I like as long as I wait until the previous run of DTEXEC is finished.  Please help!

Thanks,

Prevent Simultaneous Package Executions

Oct 23, 2007

How can I prevent a package, or a section of a package, from being run more than once simultaneously? The package makes use of a staging database table, and if two copies of this package are run at the same time, there will be a race condition and possible corruption of the data in the database table. I have also noticed that the SSIS logging gets messed up and starts overwriting itself if I have more than one of these packages run at the same time.

What I am thinking of should work the same way as a serializable transaction lock on a normal query, where one query has to wait if another query has a lock on the table. I don't want the package to throw an error, I want it to wait until the other one is done.

I have been trying to use transactions in a test SSIS package, but they are not quite doing what I want them to do. I put various SSIS steps in a sequence container and require a serializable transaction. I have also tried putting the transaction at the package level, but that is not preventing simultaneous package runs.

Is there a built-in way to do this that is easy to implement? Otherwise, what I could do is insert a flag into the database indicating that a package is running, then make sure to reset the flag on any error or on completion. It seems like this alternate method could be error-prone though.

I am using SP2.

Error Logging In CLR Stored Procedures

Jun 14, 2005

Hello,I was wondering if there were any built-in objects to handle error handling, in any of the SQL Server objects, or just to use event log or trace or debug or something like that.  Or is it not recommended at all to use try.. catch, for whatever reason. Thanks a lot.

Logging CPU And IO Cost Of Stored Procs

May 25, 2006

We use SQL Server 2005 and we use lots of stored procedures. Each time a stored procedure run we log the name, execution time and username so we can identify trends and long-running procedures.
I would like to add the actual CPU and IO cost of execution to this log. Is there a way to get it? This type of information is viewable in SQL Server's performance tools - so there must be some way to get it.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Calling A Stored Procedure Inside Another Stored Procedure (or Nested Stored Procedures)

Nov 1, 2007

Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly.  For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie
exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created'
returns an int value as 1
(performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created')
but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie:
exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1'
which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc):
SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example).
My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert).
Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?

Catching Exception In Stored Proc And Logging

Dec 7, 2005

Hi,

I am new to SQL Server and hence asking this.....

I have a requirement to catch any problem within my code and log it into a table with structure:

CREATE TABLE ERROR_LOG
(MSG varchar(1000),
ERROR_CODE varchar(1000)
)

As an example:

declare @test int
begin
--deliberately assigning a char into an int variable
set @test='ABC'
end

This, as expected throws an error like:

Msg 245, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'ABC' to data type int.

I want to catch the first line to ERROR_CODE field and the second line to MSG field in ERROR_LOG table

I also need to do it such that this proc seems SUCCEDED with logging into error log

How can I do this in SQL Server?

Please suggest.......

[From Oracle background, actually I am speaking about EXCEPTION Block in Pl/SQL]

Best Regards,

Ayan

Best Way To Handle Data Connections For Multiple Users And Executions.

May 3, 2008

basically, is it inefficient to open and close a data connection everytime data needs to be retrieved or is there a way for a user to use the same conenction over multiple pages orfor multiple users to share one global data connection I just wanted to know this before I built a site where data could be constantly being pulled or put into the database. It would be easier to just keep opening and closing the connection since it just means pasting in the small chunk of code I use to do that where I need it. I hear speak of connections sometimes not closing etc and wonder if that is an issue then if you are opening and closing too many of them. I am using SqlConnection SqlCommand and SqlDatareader , my code works, just wondering if my approach lacked scalability before I find out too late and have to rewrite everything . Jim

Logging To Event Viewer Fails But SQL Server Logging Works OK - Why?

Jun 18, 2007

Greetings,

I am developing a package on my local workstation. I have defined two logging service providers. One is for SQL Server and the other is for the Windows Event Log. I am using the Dts.Log method in a script task to write log entries.

Logging is working properly with the SQL Server provider and rows are being inserted into the sysdtslog90 table. However, the only events that are being logged in the Windows Event Log are the package start and end events which I believe SSIS is doing automatically anyway.

Is there something I need to do to enable WIndows Event Log logging other than defining a log provider and making sure it is checked active? Won't SSIS write to two different logs with one Dts.Log call? Any ideas on what might be going wrong with my approach?

Thanks,

BCB

Logging Package Name For Any Event In Sysdtslog90 Logging Table

Oct 17, 2007

Hi,
I decided to use the SQL Server log provider to store logging data of all my Integration Services packages. I also created some reports about this data for operating purposes.
I have a problem occurs the name of the executing package is not always written to the log,but the name of the single task which failed. But that is not very useful information for operating, because I do not see any chance to get the name of the package by the information which is logged in the sysdtslog90 table in the database which I defined for SSIS Logging.

How do I configure the package to always log the package information into the table, too?

Best regards,
Stefoon

3 211.90 ug/Kg Acetone
4 140.30 ug/L Acetone
5 120.70 ug/L Acetone
6 90.70 ug/L Acetone
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now, I try to use this Stored Procedure in my ADO.NET-VB 2005 Express programming:
//////////////////--spTopSixAnalytes.vb--///////////

Public Class Form1

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

Dim sqlConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source = .SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = SSPI; Initial Catalog = ssmsExpressDB;")

Dim sqlDataAdapter As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdaptor("[spTopSixAnalytes]", sqlConnection)

sqlDataAdapter.SelectCommand.Command.Type = CommandType.StoredProcedure

'Pass the name of the DataSet through the overloaded contructor

'of the DataSet class.

Dim dataSet As DataSet ("ssmsExpressDB")

sqlConnection.Open()

sqlDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet)

sqlConnection.Close()

End Sub

End Class
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I executed the above code and I got the following 4 errors:
Error #1: Type 'SqlConnection' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #2: Type 'SqlDataAdapter' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #3: Array bounds cannot appear in type specifiers (in Form1.vb)
Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)

Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

More Information for you to know:
I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly.
I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.

Ad Hoc Query Vs Stored Procedure Performance Vs DTS Execution Of Stored Procedure

Jan 23, 2008

Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior:
1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio
2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio

What could explain this?

Obviously,

All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.

Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).

The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+)
The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query)
The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes
