Login Fails When Using IIS With The Login Control And Default ASP.NET Provider
Aug 23, 2006
Hello,
I am currently trying to use the Login control in an ASP.NET website with IIS. The control works fine when I am running the website in debug mode within Visual Studio 2005. However, when I create the Virtual Directory in IIS, and try to log in from there, I get an error message as follows:
Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'machinenameASPNET'
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'machinenameASPNET'.
The application is very simple. I created a Login.aspx page with a login control on it, and I have the default.aspx page. I used theASP.NET administration tool to change the authentication mode to AspNetSqlProvider (forms authentication), and to create one user (no roles). I am using the default provider with the aspnetdb.mdf database. I have been working on this for a few days now, and have searched this site but have not found a solution that works for me. Any suggestions?
Hi, Im getting this error when attempting to retrieve data from an sql database.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Been looking through the forums for a solution to this problem.I already tried granting access through statements such as:exec sp_grantloginaccess N1'machineNameASPNET'But they don't seem to work.. i vaguely remember seeing somewhere a DOS command line statement that grants access to the ASPNET_WP and that fixed my problem before on another computer.. but this is a new computer and i forgot to write down the command. Can anyone help explain and propose a solution to my problem. Many thanxs.
I am using the MSDE to connect to my ASP.NET application. I get this error after clicking the login button of my login page. Anyone know why this would happen?
Thanks for any help,
Cannot open database requested in login 'DataSQL'. Login fails. Login failed for user 'serverASPNET'.
Hi when i try and open a database in sql server management studio i get the error "Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'DOMAINUser'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)", what can i do to rectify this, i have googled around and still havent found no answers.
hi: I got the problem, which lots of people might encounter before.
In my case, I use login control and sqlexpress to build a login page. when password & user name were entered. It gave me: "Cannot open user default database, login fails"
The solution given by msdn is: SQL Server 2005You can use the sqlcmd utility to change the default database in SQL Server 2005. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. 2.Use one of the following methods, depending on the kind of authentication that the SQL Server login uses: €˘If the SQL Server login uses Microsoft Windows authentication to connect to the instance, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:sqlcmd €“E -S InstanceName €“d master€˘If the SQL Server login uses SQL Server authentication to connect to the instance, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER: sqlcmd -S InstanceName -d master -U SQLLogin -P PasswordNote InstanceName is a placeholder for the name of the SQL Server 2005 instance to which you are connecting. SQLLogin is a placeholder for the SQL Server login whose default database has been dropped. Password is a placeholder for the SQL Server login password.3.At the sqlcmd prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER: ALTER LOGIN SQLLogin WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = AvailDBNameNote AvailDBName is a placeholder for the name of the existing database that can be accessed by the SQL Server login in the instance.4.At the sqlcmd prompt, type GO, and then press ENTER.
I wonder what are InstanceName, SQLLogin & AvailDBName. It would be nice if someone can give me a specific example, since I am not sure how to type them in a command line. :)
I am try to login using the ASP.NET 2.0 Standard Login Control. When I enter the correct userId/Password and hit the Login button, the page just refreshes, no error is displayed. But if I enter wrong userid/password..it give me an error.
Also I check the Membership.ValidateUser() returns true, that means the user is validated, but still I am able to redirect to ReturnURL.?
Is there something wrong with the Authentication, or Creating a cookie. Can somebody shed some light on this,
I have the following machine configuration
Windows XP Pro Service Pack2 IIS 5.1 SQL Server 2000 Visual Studio 2005 DISABLE ANONMYOUS ACCESS IN IIS ENABLE WINDOWS AUTHENTICATION
I am getting the following output :
Membership.ValidateUser(Login1.UserName, Login1.Password) : - True HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name : - // is blank User.Identity.IsAuthenticated :- False User.Identity.AuthenticationType :- // is blank
NOTE : The applicationName is same in web.config as well as in the aspnet_Applications table in SQL Server 2000 membership database.
I have seen alot of comments posted about an Issue in SQL2005 that no one at microsoft could really answer. If a user would try to alter his own login, it would fail stating a permissions error.
This is what I did to get it to work .
USE my_dataBase GO
Alter Login [my_login] WITH PASSWORD = 'newpassword' OLD_PASSWORD = 'oldpassword'
In previous examples, people were trying to do an alter login without first narrowing it to the database. If you do not include the USE statement it will fail.
Another thing to note is that they can only change certain things....they cannot turn off check_policy or check_expiration.
Hi There, I have a really strange problem. I am creating a website with an administration back end. We have a seperate sql 2000 server which we are using hold authentication credientials (after having used the aspnet_regsql.exe to setup the appropriate tables. When testing the application on the local machine, everything works fine. The web admin works, I can login, I can retrieve data to display on the rest of the site. Once uploaded to the live environment things change.I can still connect to the sql server i.e. I have information being displayed on the public area of the site which is coming from the sql 2000 db. I can type in the incorrect login details to the admin section of the site and the system will return an error, which is correct as well, however, if I type in the correct login information, the page hangs for awhile and then displays this error: My question is, why is it doing this when it works find on my local box and the DB connection is actually working on other parts of the site? Can anyone help?An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Hey Microsoft: this affects development that will eventually sell a lot of seats on SharePoint Server 2007. If you guys and gals can't straighten out this mess, you can't expect custom solutions with custom web parts. So pay attention for your own good. Yes, SPS 2007 is what this is all about. I've created simpe web parts and deployed them, same VS 2005, but I need local development and debugging for more complex stuff. I'm really disappointed that you have no solution for this problem.
I've seen other posts on this, but the result seems to be the same: if you fix it, it's by accident, not by design.
1. I created a blank ASP.NET web site
2. I added a web part manager
3. I added a web part zone
I get the error described above. I have no idea why SQL Server settings are so screwed up.
I've tried all the stuff in the other posts - security settings, command line installation, etc. None of those worked.
The default template(s) don't copy anything into App_Data, nor create an empty folder. I don't know why that is. I have other web sites working just fine, but they use remote SQL databases, or local ones I created, and didn't need profile management (no forms authentication, no web parts, no web zones).
I've also started out with a local database, using SQL Authentication, later moving it to a remote server, and never had any problems. The SQL Server developer edition and Express seem to work just fine. I can also debug stored procs when the .mdf is in App_Data. So the problem isn't one of connectivity.
What would cause the default screw-up? This would seem to point from all directions to a problem with Visual Studio (2005)? The installation is defalt - perhaps some extras included (copy local), but nothing unusual. AJAX for ASP.net is installed, but not used in the above "default web site" trial. Likewise Syncfusion's tools, which work fine on other developer workstations at this same location, all of which are from the same image (purchased at the same time & imaged). That web parts work on other boxes, running all the same management tools (anti-virus, remote sys admin/sms etc.) makes none of those suspect.
I think Microsoft needs to have a clean problem solution and publish it. SP1 certainly doesn't fix it. What's worse is the stupid, lame error message. "I can't open the default database". Well, what did you try? What do you think the default is? What settings are you using? Why is there no debugging information other than the usual worthless trace information showing it's all deep within the ProviderBase and SqlClient namespace code? How is that supposed to be helpful?
If anyone has anything solid, not guesses, I'd like to know.
i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database. When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and push 'Test connection' button. everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things, from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore.... it only work when i restart the computer.
I Guys I am trying to create an application that writes data to a SQL database (studio express). The application works fine but as soon as I open the table with the SQL server management studio express the application does not work any more displaying the following message:
€śCannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user€¦€?
If I siwtch off and on the computer the problem disappear till the table will be open with the database management studio express!!!!!
Dear !From Couple of days i waste my hours on it. but i fail to solve this problem. Can we use SQL server 2005 and Login Control of ASP.NET. when i try to use it gives me an error. An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) May be it works with SQL Express Edition as in learning videos. But i want to use it wit SQL server 2005. Very intersting thing i create the Mange City Page. in this page it works perfect. in this page city table takes a parameter from dropdownlist. perfectly working. but with login page it gives me error.
Hi, I was able to create an MSSQL database with the ASPNETDB.MDF file. But how do I get the Login Control to point to the MSSQL rather than the App_DataASPNETDB.MDF file?
hi, so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them: "Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'" Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error. I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed' This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either. I'm stumped. Any ideas?
I have built a page with the login control using the default sql server express database that is integrated into the application. I have got it working on my development machine and want to post it on the web with a web hosting company. I did not know if they had to have sql server express installed on that machine for my database to work properly or will it work with sql server 2005 installed. Most web hosting companies that I have called say they only support sql server 2005 and not sql server express. I was unsure if the login would work or not. Please help with this issue. I am new at ASP.net and really enjoy it. However, I want to ensure that my site will work on the web as it does on my machine.
Ok.. I have a web site I am developing in Visual Studio 2005. Its VB based with SQL Server 2005 as the backend. IIS 6 is the web engine and all of this is running on a Windows 2003 Server.
Here is the problem.. I have a form that authenticates a user and then redirects them to another page. The redirection is not working. All I get is 'Your login attempt was not successful. Please try again.' So I decided to trouble shoot a little and I added a Forgot your password control and a Sign up for new account control to the page as well. When I do the Forgot my password it sends me the username and password in an email, but it just refuses to accept them.
If I use the sign up for a new account control it actually lets me into the redirect page but if I log out and try to get back in it fails. Its crazy and if driving me out of my mind.
If someone wants to help me out I would appreciate it. I have been racking my brain over this for too many days.
Thanks in advance...
Mark
Ps. - I have read every thread and tried just about everything regarding this issue. It has to be something stupid and simple that I am overlooking.
i'm going nuts with SQL server notification thing. I have gone throigh this artical which tells how to set user http://www.codeproject.com/KB/database/SqlDependencyPermissions.aspx. This article show how to create new user and setup for sql server notification. But In my case user was alredy existing in database. which is very common senario in most cases. So i did following( check the SQL script below) but then i get this error "A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)" this my sql script use [master]Go -- Ensuring that Service Broker is enabled ALTER DATABASE [DatabaseName] SET ENABLE_BROKERGO -- Switching to our databaseuse [DatabaseName]GO CREATE SCHEMA schemaname AUTHORIZATION usernameGO ALTER USER username WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = schemaname GO /* * Creating two new roles. I have created one new database in sql 2000 with name Test. But when I access this DB through classical ASP page it showing some error:- Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database requested in login 'Test'. Login fails.
Here I am trying to connect DB by ASP page by entering user name and password. Anybody can tell the reason please?
I have a database with name 'RHC'. And its working in my localmachine. But When I uploaded it to the server, it showing some connection error- It is Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database requested in login 'RHC'. Login fails.
Is it possible to control the number of simultaneous connections one login id can have? I`d like to avoid my users to share their login ids and passwords to help them enter data into the system.
Hi, I work with a newbie asp.net/ sql server programer (I didn't know that when I first worked with him) in developing a website with CMS, he finished the work and he showed me that every thing in the local host (on the pc) work just fine, when we tried to upload the files to the server using ftp, we got this error:http://www.radiorient.net/index.aspx This is his first project to be online, so I'm not sure (so is he) what should be done to solve this issue, I'm trying to do my part to try to solve this problem as I'm on strict deadline. He told me that the connection in the code is: "public void get_con(){con.ConnectionString="Server=local;database=Radiorient_db;User ID=gyonis_radiorient;Password=xxx";if(con.State==ConnectionState.Closed) con.Open();}" Host Name: mssql.royaltyservers.com (64.15.146.79)Database name: gyonis_Radiorient_dbDatabase Login: gyonis_radiorientDatabase Password: xxx Control panel: H-SPHERE ASP.net/ sql server Can any body please help me ASAP... I am trying to correctly configure a very small replication - one table - between two test machines. Publisher is Windows server 2000. Subscriber is Windows server 2003. Both machines run SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, SP 2 has been applied. I have created an alias from Publisher to Subscriber. In SSMS, I am able to connect to both pub and sub databases (sub is Northwind, by the way).
I was receiving Error 18456, State 11; now I'm reverting back to state 5, which indicates an invalid userid.
HOW do I set appropriate userid for replication? I have established identical id and password on both machines - the only difference between the IDs is the machine name. However, the ID I wish to use is NOT the ID that I use to log onto the publisher computer. This userid is inserted because I'm using Windows Authentication, and I cannot find any means to override it. So I set up the same ID on the publisher, but it doesn't matter what ID I use. I only have TCP/IP turned on because these machines are on different networks, and neither machine is joined to a domain. The alias uses the IP address (but we know that works because I have connectivity under SSMS).
Where can I turn and how do I get this done? I've been struggling with this for 3 weeks, and I'm still not convinced I'm asking the right question.
I can logon to my Sql server using the SSMS management tool, I am using Windows Authentication to logon to SSMS. Create a database OK, with all the necessary tables.
However when I start a VB Express app and try to connect to this database I get an error that login filed for user AMDLarry, AMD is my PC name and my login (Larry) is the computer Administrator logon. The PC is a standalone ie not part of a domain etc.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
-This is the error that is being generated once the site is hosted. If I run my code from my machine and access my remote sql 2005 database it works fine. It is when I try to login from my URL directly that I get the error. Any thoughts? Thanks.
I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer edition on my machine a couple months ago, and now I can't remember how to log in. I don't remember setting up any log in accounts, and whatever I might have set I apparently didn't write down. Are there default user names and passwords that I could use to get in? I'm a SQL Server newbie.
