Login Failed For The User (using Windows Integrated Security)
Aug 1, 2006
Hello Everyone,
I am trying to connect SQL database through code but I get this error,I have spent days to solve it but unfortunately I couldn't...Here is my code in VB express(OP:windows 2000 with SP4)I am new to VB,so it makes the situation more difficult for me.
my code is:
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim conn1 As SqlConnection = _
New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;" & _
"Integrated Security=SSPI;" & _
"database=deneme3_database;")
'Open connection
conn1.Open()
MessageBox.Show("Connection succeeded.")
'Close connection
conn1.Close()
MessageBox.Show("Connection closed.")
End Sub
The error message is,it is in german but it is clear I guess:)
" Die von der Anmeldung angeforderte "deneme3_database"-Datenbank kann nicht geöffnet werden. Fehler bei der Anmeldung.
Fehler bei der Anmeldung für den Benutzer 'ADPLANatalay'. "
I have been struggling with this problem for a while with SQL 2005. I have never had such login problem with SQL 2000. Here is the scenario:
I have installed SQL2005 standard version on a XP Pro box and I am trying to access it from another XP Pro machine. I can access it using a SQL user name and password that I set up on the server, but I have not had luck with using Windows NT Integrated security. When I try to connect to it (e.g. by a UDL file), I get an error saying Login failed for user €˜HP-AMD64Guest€™ where €˜HP-AMD64€™ is the name of the PC running the SQL 2005. I can access the files on the machine without any problem. I do not understand why it uses €˜Guest€™ that is not what I use to log on my machine. Does anyone have any clue to offer me?
I got a website using .Net v2.0.xxx and SQL Server Express 2005 in a Win2003 Domain Controller machine. Both website and SQLServer is running on the same machine. Website and SQLServer are configured to accept only Integrated Windows Authentication. Domain Users group is added in SQLServer logins list and given Read and Write access to the database used by the website. Also Domain Admins groups is added and given full permission to the same database.
I thought since website will run only with login details from Active Directory, SQL Server connection is also going to be validated against the same login details. But I felt I got the whole concept wrong when I received the error mentioned in subject line.
Can anyone please explain the best way to connect to database in above-mentioned context. Please remember that I need to implement different rights on the database for 'Domain Users' and 'Domain Admins' group. If there is a better approach than using these groups, lemme know please.
Any idea why I cannot connect to a SQL Server database using SqlConnection and no Integrated security? I get a "Login failed for user 'XXXX'" error. The user ID and password I am using are all correct and have the required access (tested several times from different places). The connection string I am using is: "Server=XXXXX;Database=XXXXX;Trusted_Connection=fal se;User ID=XXXX;Password=XXXXX" I have also tried replacing "Server" by "Data source", "Database" by "Initial catalog", "Trusted_Connection" by "Integrated security", "User ID" by "UID" and "Password" by "PWD".Any ideas?
We are looking at developing an SQL Server 2005 Database and I would like to use Windows Authentication rather than SQL Server Authentication to connect our client app.
In our development environment, we have two Servers, one being used as a file server and the other as an SQL Server. We have now set up a domain using the file server as the domain controller. (We had previously been set up to use a workgroup).
I have set up an active directory group called SqlDevelopers and added an active directory user called Jonathan to it.
On the SQL Sever, in management studio, I have set up a new server login which uses windows authentication called DomainSqlDevelopers. I used the GUI to verify I could see the domain and the group.
The default database is set to a test database on the server. A user in the test database is mapped to the DomainSqlDevelopers and given the Roles dbo, db_datareader, db_datawriter.
To test the log in, on the server, I logged out as administrator and in as Jonathan. I could successfully access the server through management studio using windows authentication.
However, if I log in as Jonathan on my client PC and try to access the SQL Server using management studio and windows authentication, I have problems.
The first time I try I will get a timeout error. If I try again will get either:
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection
Or
Cannot generate SSPI context
I can€™t determine any pattern to which of the above errors I get.
However, if I log in as administrator on my client PC, I can connect to the server using management studio and windows authentication.
Sounds like Active Directory/Domain or other Network issue (Not really my area). I would be grateful for any help.
We have a Web application that requires user authentication. We have a Login Page for user's to login and be authenticated. We also manage the user accounts using SQL Server Membership Provider. We created aLogin user in SQL Server and used this user's privileges to connect to SQL Server in our website's connection strings. Example, in our Web.config file, the connection string is:
<connectionStrings> Â <addname="MyConnectionString"connectionString="Server=MYSERVERNAMESQLSERVER2012;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;User Id=TUser;Password=MyPassword"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings>
The problem now is when a user logs in, it's throwing an error that TUser's password has already expired. We did not enforce the password policy and expiration date for this user. So, I'm wondering why it's giving me this error.
Deleting a Login from a server instance and adding it back did not show that the login was still mapped to databases. In SQL Server 2008, adding a Windows Login did not permit access to end user databases until the Windows Login was mapped to various databases. In SQL Server 2012, once a Windows Login is added to SQL Server Security, it may access ANY end user databaseWe use the following to circumvent this problem, Windows Login by Windows Login: DENY VIEW ANY DATABASE TO [TESTTest1]
i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database. When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and push 'Test connection' button. everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things, from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore.... it only work when i restart the computer.
I'm working on an ASP.NET project, and we're attempting to switch from SQL Server authentication to Windows authentication to connect to the database. It works fine locally when I debug in Visual Studio, but when it hits the web server, I get the error: "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection." IIS has anonymous access disabled, and Integrated Windows Authentication is checked. The web.config file has: <authentication mode="Windows"/><identity impersonate="true"/> The database I'm attempting to access is on a different machine than IIS, and the connection string doesn't contain a username or password, and has "Trusted_Connection=Yes", and "Integrated Security=SSPI". From what I've been able to find online, I'm guessing the problem is due to IIS and SQL Server residing on different machines, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Any ideas?
Any way to find out who's causing "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection." error in SQL Server error logs?
Hi when i try and open a database in sql server management studio i get the error "Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'DOMAINUser'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)", what can i do to rectify this, i have googled around and still havent found no answers.
Hi-- I am building an intRAnet website using windows authentication for website access and SQL Server access ( Trusted_Connection = true ). In IIS I have these settings:
Allow Anonymous = unchecked (false) Windows Authentication = Checked (true) Digest windows = checked (true) In my Web.Config file:
authentication="windows" impersonate="true" allowusers="*" When I pull up the page these are my credentials: Security.Principal.Windows: mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page) Me.User.Identity: mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page) Threading.currentThread.currentUser mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page)
So the ASP.NET page recognizes it is me and my domain. However, when i click a button to pull some data from a database I get the error message: Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. My data access on SQL Server works fine. The weird thing is when I debug on my machine it pulls data fine. but when I copy the files to the windows 2003 server it doesn't work. Do i have to do something with delegation?
Hey Microsoft: this affects development that will eventually sell a lot of seats on SharePoint Server 2007. If you guys and gals can't straighten out this mess, you can't expect custom solutions with custom web parts. So pay attention for your own good. Yes, SPS 2007 is what this is all about. I've created simpe web parts and deployed them, same VS 2005, but I need local development and debugging for more complex stuff. I'm really disappointed that you have no solution for this problem.
I've seen other posts on this, but the result seems to be the same: if you fix it, it's by accident, not by design.
1. I created a blank ASP.NET web site
2. I added a web part manager
3. I added a web part zone
I get the error described above. I have no idea why SQL Server settings are so screwed up.
I've tried all the stuff in the other posts - security settings, command line installation, etc. None of those worked.
The default template(s) don't copy anything into App_Data, nor create an empty folder. I don't know why that is. I have other web sites working just fine, but they use remote SQL databases, or local ones I created, and didn't need profile management (no forms authentication, no web parts, no web zones).
I've also started out with a local database, using SQL Authentication, later moving it to a remote server, and never had any problems. The SQL Server developer edition and Express seem to work just fine. I can also debug stored procs when the .mdf is in App_Data. So the problem isn't one of connectivity.
What would cause the default screw-up? This would seem to point from all directions to a problem with Visual Studio (2005)? The installation is defalt - perhaps some extras included (copy local), but nothing unusual. AJAX for ASP.net is installed, but not used in the above "default web site" trial. Likewise Syncfusion's tools, which work fine on other developer workstations at this same location, all of which are from the same image (purchased at the same time & imaged). That web parts work on other boxes, running all the same management tools (anti-virus, remote sys admin/sms etc.) makes none of those suspect.
I think Microsoft needs to have a clean problem solution and publish it. SP1 certainly doesn't fix it. What's worse is the stupid, lame error message. "I can't open the default database". Well, what did you try? What do you think the default is? What settings are you using? Why is there no debugging information other than the usual worthless trace information showing it's all deep within the ProviderBase and SqlClient namespace code? How is that supposed to be helpful?
If anyone has anything solid, not guesses, I'd like to know.
Can we implement a table level (object) security on the groups of the windows NT domain using the integrated windows NT security so that one group has the permission over one table to update ,select ,delete the information and other group has permission has for some other table.
In my architecture I have a Domain Controller with Active Directory (DOMAIN_A), IIS 6.0 (WEBSERVER) and SqlServer 2000 (SQLDBSERVER).
The WEBSERVER has a .NET application with windows authentication. The .NET application interacts with the database server. I want to use Integrated Security to pass in the users login credentials to the database to run any database calls so that I can audit who is making what calls on the database.
The connection string I am using for this is as follows:
The problem arises after I login to the web application (I use the user DOMAIN_ASomeUser where SomeUser is a user who has permissions set up to make all of the database calls). After logging in however, when I go to a page that makes a database call I get the following error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'DOMAIN_AWEBSERVER$'. It seems that for some reason, .NET is not passing the login name SomeUser, but instead is passing SERVERNAME$. Would anyone pls have any ideas how I can implement this. Any guide or references would be much appreciated.
I am having a problem in applying subscription to a report.
Here is my case:
I have a datasource with 'Windows integrated security ' authentication, yes....I am using windows domain authentication, so login info is not stored in DB but its authenticated from domain. Now the report I want to use subscription on is using this DS. I read it somwehere that I can use rsconfig -e -u -p option to assign user to unattended reports.
I think, this is the unattended report. I tried with rsconfig and then clicked on 'new subscription option'...and i got error (again) saying 'Subscription can not be created because the credentials used to run the report are not stored...or if linked report.....blah blah...'
I want to use subscription to this report but with 'Windows integrated security', is there any way I can do it ?? How can I assign some user to this report without changing authentiation method and use subscription ?
Help me ...I am stuck, this is the last milestone in my project !!!
I have a set of reports that read from an Analysis Services cube. Permissions are managed at the cube level since different users should look at the same report but different data. This is why for those reports, the data source has Windows Integrated Security set.
Those same users should be able to subscribe to those reports, the problem is that for subscriptions to work, the data sources must store the credentials. This means the filtered reports are lost since the stored account will show all the reports for all users.
Is there any way of generating "filtered subscriptions"?
We have a SQL Server Reporting Services instance running SP2. I have attempted to add a domain group in a trusted domain to the server to enable regular users to access reports. I have added this group to the instance folder as a SYSTEM USER and home as BROWSER. I am allowing those settings to be inherited down through the folders (reports and data sources) to the reports. My test user in this report receives:
The permissions granted to user 'DOMAINuser' are insufficient for performing this operation. (log shows HTTP 500)
when the user attempts to use the URL to go directly to the report. If we try to navigate from HOME and walk the folders the user sees a blank HOME page.
I have used other groups with no problem.
Is there something I am missing in setting up the security environment? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Server: Windows 2003, SQL 2005, on a domain Client: Windows 2008 Beta, not on any domain
I created an account with the same user name as the domain user on the client machine. And then I logged in as that user and went to Manage Network Password. I entered the correct domain credentials. Verified that this worked for file shares. However, SQL does not appear to be recognizing this and it tells me:
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
I have verified that this domain account is working properly with SQL when the client is also on the domain.
How can I get this Windows authentication scenario to work where the client is not on the domain and the SQL server is on the domain?
We're having a bit of a problem getting Integrated Security to work with a .Net 2.0 application and SQL 2005. While we're tweaking permissions on the SQL-side, we came across an account "Application Login" and wondered what its role is. First, our problem:
Currently, the users in the AD group get a connection error. This group is defined as follows at the instance level:
role: public user mapping: to the database without any default schema securables: none status: grant and enabled
At the database security level:
general: none securables: execute on all (100+) stored procedures
And we gave them "Execute" on the database itself.
A little background: we had detached and copied this database from one server to another. So we suspect that the Application Login may have been modified/corrupted, even though it appears to be identical between the original and the copied databases. So we redefined it on the copied DB to match the original. Another group, which is defined as dbo on the database, has no problem at all connecting and running the application.
The Application Login has Execute permissions on all stored procedures and Delete, Insert, Select, Update, and View Definition on the ChangeLog table. It also has db_DataReader, db_DataWriter, and db_ddlAdmin roles associated with it.
Is there another SQL login required for initial connection to the database even though Integrated Security=SSPI is used in the connection string?
Does anyone see where we may be missing a security setting for the non-dbo user group to connect to the database?
Thanks very much for any suggestions, ideas .... Cheers, Tess
hi, so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them: "Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'" Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error. I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed' This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either. I'm stumped. Any ideas?
Hi , I am trying to connect to MS Sql server 2000 from Java (1.4.2 /1.5 ). I installed my Sql Server(8.00.382) from the one supplied withVS.NET 2001. When I installed it on my laptop it did not ask me for auser name and password. After install when I re-started my machine Isee the server started up with a green light. Now when I connect to theserver from VS.NET it works fine. This is because VS uses windowsintegrated security. I now need to connect using Java , so I downloadedthe microsoft drivers for SQL2000-JDBC sp3 from the microsoft site. Iadded the jar files to my Java project classpath. I manage to registerthe driver in java :Class dbClass = ClassLoader.getSystemClassLoader().loadClass("com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver");DriverManager.registerDriver((Driver) dbClass.newInstance() );Connection conn =DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://localhost:1433;_integrated security=SSPI");but cannot seem to get a connection as it gives an SQLException sayingthat it is unable to connect:java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Errorestablishing socket.I cant seem to figure it out.Can some one help ??I am a newbie to sqlserver so couldnt quite figure out how to changeadmin password or create a new user with the tools provided with thisversion of sql (SQL Server Desktop Engine).Any help will be appreciated.Ebby
I am trying to connect to an SQL database with a Java program compiled in NetBeans IDE. I have copied the proper .dll in the auth folder to the same folder as the .jar file required. I have tried a lot of things for a lot of hours, and am still coming up with the message "Driver is not configured for integrated security and "could not load the xxxxx.dll
Has anyone come up with a solution or a workaround to this problem. Please help. I have read the documentation until I am blue in the face. Please only respond if you have a 64 bit machine.
I 'm a newbie to SQL Server, been using Access as a database for my web app. and have decided I need the power of SQL Server. Using VWD Express, I am able to generate a SQL database with my tables and stored procedures quite easily as well as access the database from my asp.net code. This works fine on my devlopment machine. But now I want to deploy on my remote server and the webhost says they can attach my SQL database but they need my SQL login info. So I have a couple of questions: 1. Does the SQL database I create in VWD express only work in Integrated Security mode or can I assign a username & password to the .mdf file so I can upload to my remote host to work in a shared SQL environment? 2. Or am I confused and the .mdf file is just a data file which can be attached to any SQL account and the SQL login info only pertains to the instance of SQL Server that I'm trying to connect to? 3. My web host mainly uses SQL Server 2000. Will a simple database created in SQL Server 2005 Express work on an instance of SQL Server 2000? If I can just figure these simple items out, I will be ecstatic!
We are having some commercial applications that are running on sql servers at different sites, all with sql security. The software vendor wants to copy data into staging tables on our BI server. But our BI server only support Integrated security.
But how can i say, in the definition of a linked server (at the remote machines) to swicth security system ?
If it is possible i could enter a fixed domain-account in that users fields, but i suppose that this field was intended for SqlServer security.
I Guys I am trying to create an application that writes data to a SQL database (studio express). The application works fine but as soon as I open the table with the SQL server management studio express the application does not work any more displaying the following message:
€œCannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user€¦€?
If I siwtch off and on the computer the problem disappear till the table will be open with the database management studio express!!!!!
We have a a DTS package set up to run against another SQL Server. Using an integrated login is there a way to map an NT Authenticated users is the sql server login id mapping to this attached server. The DB we are going against only uses NT authentication to attach to.
hi i have created a username and a password in sqlserver 2000 from logins in Enterprise manager and i permit him to the database i need to connect to .. and i check all server roles for that user and i make sqlserver authentication for him with a password and then i goto the udl file to connect to that database using that user it fails !! and says
"login failed for that user 'myusername' reason not associated with a trusted sqlserver connection"
while i use NT integrated security it works well so how can i connect to sqlserver using a username and a password
I know from searching this forum that there have been many variations of the issue I'm currently suffering, but I haven't found anything quite like mine or a solution to solve it. The issue I'm running into is that I am unable to log on to Reporting Services using Management Studio or the web interface when Windows Integrated Security is enabled. I have full functionality using basic security, but the risks involved make it impossible to deploy basic authentication out into production. The error I'm receiving in Management Studio is The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient). I recieve the same error when I try the web interface.
I've looked the most recent logfile in WindowsSystem32LogFilesW3SVC1 and these entries match up to the time I attempted my authentication.

I tried to highlight one of each of the HTTP errors I am getting. 401.2 and 401.1 are the ones I kind of expected, but have no idea why I'm getting them. The 500 0 error is a bit troubling, because unless I'm mistaken thats a server side error.
Here's my current setup. As far as I can tell, I've done everything to set up correctly for Windows Integerated security.
My Specs The server machine running all SQL 2005 services. It resides in a domain. All Clients are in the same domain.
Intel Dual Processor 3.20 gig Xenon
Windows Server 2003 w/ SP2
Microsoft Sql Server 2005 w/ SP2 Reporting Services Setup The virtual directories Reports and ReportServer are set to Windows Integrated Security with Anonymous Access disabled. All other checkboxes in Directory Security are unchecked. For permissions in Reports, I have:
Administrators (servernameAdministrators) - Full Control
ASP.NET Machine Account - Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write
Domain Users - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SQLServer2005ReportingServices]WebServiceUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SQLServer2005ReportServerUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SYSTEM - Full Control
Users (CompNameUsers) - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read In ReportServer I have the same permissions except Authenticated Users is absent.
At one point, I even added the account Everybody and gave it full control, and I still recieved a HTTP 401 error. Any help at what I might be missing would be a godsend.
