Lookup Table Foreign Key Null
May 1, 2007
I'm using SQL Server 2000. I have an EXTERNAL_FUNDING table and an EXTERNAL_FUNDING_TYPE table. The DDL for the tables is listed below. Each EXTERNAL_FUNDING record has a type field, which is a foreign key to a record in the EXTERNAL_FUNDING_TYPE table. However, I would like for the type to be allowed to be null. When displaying the data, if the type is null, I'd like to show blank text. Here is the query I'm trying to use:
SELECT EXTERNAL_FUNDING.id, date_requested as [Request Date],source as [Source/Sponsor],EXTERNAL_FUNDING_TYPE.type AS [Type],amount as [Amount], granted as [Granted]
FROM EXTERNAL_FUNDING,EXTERNAL_FUNDING_TYPE
WHERE (project_id = @project_id) AND
(EXTERNAL_FUNDING.type = EXTERNAL_FUNDING_TYPE.id)
ORDER BY date_requested ,source,type
But this query does not return the records with NULL for the type field. Can someone explain to me how I can also return the rows with a NULL type? Thanks!
Table DDL:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[EXTERNAL_FUNDING] (
[id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[project_id] [int] NOT NULL ,
[date_requested] [datetime] NULL ,
[source] [nvarchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[type] [int] NULL ,
[amount] [money] NULL ,
[granted] [bit] NULL ,
[date_granted] [datetime] NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[EXTERNAL_FUNDING_TYPE] (
[type] [nvarchar] (30) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,
[id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]

I have an issue where i am mandated to enforce RI on an applications database (a good thing). but I have several common lookup tables where many of the "codes" reside for many different code types. I also have the mandate that i cannot change the underlying DDL to make composite keys to match the codes table PK. I am currently looking at creating indexed views on top of the Codes table to seperate the logical tables it contains. This is several hundred views.
I do know that I do not want to write several hundred triggers to enforce RI. Table schema below, the CdValue column is the column that is used throughout the hundreds of tables that use this codes table, and their corresponding column is not named the same.
CREATE TABLE dbo.CodesTable (
PartyGrpId INT NOT NULL
, CdTyp VARCHAR ( 8 ) NOT NULL
, CompId INT NOT NULL
, CdValue VARCHAR ( 8 ) NOT NULL
, CdValueDesc VARCHAR ( 255 ) NULL
, AltValueDesc VARCHAR ( 100 ) NULL
[Code] ....
I did though run into one forum where a person brought up a great idea. Filtered Foreign Keys, what a novel concept, if it could work it would make so much less code to fix an issue like this.
ALTER TABLE dbo.BusinessStatus WITH NOCHECK
ADD CONSTRAINT FK_dbo_BusinessStatus_CodesTable FOREIGN KEY (LoanStsDtCd) REFERENCES dbo.CodesTable (CdValue) WHERE CdTyp = 'Status'

I have two tables 1) tblCustomer (ID, Name, City) 2) tblemp (ID, NAME, Dept.ID, tblcustomer.ID)
Both the tables have ID as PKA emp can be either assigned a) All customers b)single customer c) NO customer
Pls note:- there will never be 2 or 3 customer linked to emp (my actuall requirement tables are different but to explain i am using the above tables)
I know how to assign single customer......but had problem how to link all customers and "no customer"
Please tell me if the following solution is right?1) I will manually insert a record in tblCustomer with id 0 as " all customers" and will not allow the user to delete it 2) store null in FK if it is "no customer"
Also please tell me is it ok to store one more value in tblCustomer as -1 and take it as "No customer"
I have a DDL in the Employee page which should be displaying the names of allthe customers with 2 extra values "ALL CUSTOMERS" and "SELECT" Select is the default value in DDL which says "NO CUSTOMER" selected yet
Thank youSara

We did some "at scale" fuzzy lookup tests today and were rather disappointed with the performance. I'm wanting to know your experience so I can set my performance expectations appropriately.
We were doing a fuzzy lookup against a lookup table with 25 million rows. Each row has 11 columns used in the fuzzy lookup, each between 10-100 chars. We set CopyReferenceTable=0 and MatchIndexOptions=GenerateAndPersistNewIndex and WarmCaches=true. It took about 60 minutes to build that index table, during which, dtexec got up to 4.5GB memory usage. (Is there a way to tell what % of the index table got cached in memory? Memory kept rising as each "Finished building X% of fuzzy index" progress event scrolled by all the way up to 100% progress when it peaked at 4.5GB.) The MaxMemoryUsage setting we left blank so it would use as much as possible on this 64-bit box with 16GB of memory (but only about 4GB was available for SSIS).
After it got done building the index table, it started flowing data through the pipeline. We saw the first buffer of ~9,000 rows get passed from the source to the fuzzy lookup transform. Six hours later it had not finished doing the fuzzy lookup on that first buffer!!! Running profiler showed us it was firing off lots of singelton SQL queries doing lookups as expected. So it was making progress, just very, very slowly.
We had set MinSimilarity=0.45 and Exhaustive=False. Those seemed to be reasonable settings for smaller datasets.
Does that performance seem inline with expectations? Any thoughts to improve performance?

I'm having an argument with an incumbent self-taught programmer thatit is OK to use null foreign keys in database design.My take is the whole point of a foreign key is that it's not supposedto be optional, it's very definition is it's a necessary link to theparent table and part of the definition. If it's optional it shouldn'tbe part of the definition of a table and should be in a linking tableinstead.Comments?

Hi,
I made two tables. The Policy table's rate_limit column references the RateLimit table's id as foreign key.
Here is the table definitions.
CREATE TABLE RateLimit
(
id INT CONSTRAINT PK_RateLimit_id PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED,
name VARCHAR(20),
min INT,
max INT
);
CREATE TABLE Policy
(
id INT CONSTRAINT PK_Policy_id PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED,
rate_limit INT CONSTRAINT FK_Policy_rate_limit FOREIGN KEY(rate_limit) REFERENCES RateLimit(id),
min INT,
max INT
);
Now, I inserted value each table;
INSERT INTO RateLimit VALUES(1,'RateLimit1',1000,10000);
INSERT INTO RateLimit VALUES(2,'RateLimit2',2000,20000);
INSERT INTO RateLimit VALUES(3,'RateLimit3',3000,30000);
INSERT INTO RateLimit VALUES(4,'RateLimit4',4000,40000);
INSERT INTO RateLimit VALUES(5,'RateLimit5',5000,50000);
INSERT INTO Policy VALUES(1,1,10,100);
INSERT INTO Policy VALUES(2,2,10,100);
INSERT INTO Policy VALUES(3,3,10,100);
INSERT INTO Policy VALUES(4,4,10,100);
INSERT INTO Policy VALUES(5,5,10,100);
INSERT INTO Policy VALUES(6,5,10,100);
INSERT INTO Policy VALUES(7,4,10,100);
INSERT INTO Policy(id,min,max) VALUES(8,10,100);
=========================================================================
SELECT A.id,B.name,B.min,B.max FROM Policy A,RateLimit B WHERE A.rate_limit=B.id;
The result of above query statement is like this.
---------------------------------------------
id rate_limit min max
---------------------------------------------
1 RateLimit1 1000 10000
2 RateLimit2 2000 20000
3 RateLimit3 3000 30000
4 RateLimit4 4000 40000
5 RateLimit5 5000 50000
6 RateLimit5 5000 50000
7 RateLimit4 4000 40000
---------------------------------------------
How can I get whole recordset using join, that is, if Policy table's rate_limit is null, return Policy's min/max otherwise, return RateLimit's min/max, just like below result.
---------------------------------------------
id rate_limit min max
---------------------------------------------
1 RateLimit1 1000 10000
2 RateLimit2 2000 20000
3 RateLimit3 3000 30000
4 RateLimit4 4000 40000
5 RateLimit5 5000 50000
6 RateLimit5 5000 50000
7 RateLimit4 4000 40000
8 10 100
---------------------------------------------

How to compare NULL to NULL in Lookup transformation?
I have a column (key) that has NULL value
and In my look up table, i assign NULL to -1, so i can get -1 when I join key to CD ( in lookup) ...
Num CD

Hi,
In my Integration Scenario I have a source field 'CompanyTypeCode' which is nullable in 'tblCompany' and There is a specific lookup Table 'tblCompanyType' to map the codes with descriptions for this field. When I want to transform this table, The NULL Entries fail in Lookup and I ran into problem. Please suggest a clean solution for bypassing the lookup when the entry in source is NULL. (If I bypass the lookup, the flow changes since there is not an extra column from the lookup component any more, therefore I must have another OLEDB Destination if the code is NULL).

Sassan

Hi,
Can you please tell me the way to configure the LOOK UP transformation so that it will ignore all the null values ? I want to configure a Look up component for the column "Col1" as follows
All the NULL values of Col1 should not be considered for look-up process. They should be passed to the downstream component as valid rows.
All NOT NULL values of Col1 should be processed by the Look up component.
If there is no matching value present for any NOT NULL value of Col1 then it should be directed to error output.
Regards,
Gopi

Hi all,
I have a projects table with 2 foreign key fields that both link to the same employees table because a project has a Package Engineer (PkgEngineerID) and a Contract Administrator (PkgContrAdmin). When I try to insert a record with null values for either or both of these foreign keys I get an error:
The data in row xxx was not commited. The record can't be added or changed. Referential integrity rules require a related record in table 'tblEmployees'. The transaction ended in the trigger. The batch has been aborted.
An insert statement for the above would look something like the following:
INSERT INTO tblPackages (PkgNo, PkgName, PkgEngineerID, PkgContrAdmin, PkgRemark)VALUES (1234, 'My Package', NULL, NULL, 'My Package remark')
And the create table statements are:

And:
USE [PASSQL]GO/****** Object: Table [dbo].[tblEmployees] Script Date: 01/15/2008 23:28:01 ******/SET ANSI_NULLS ONGOSET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ONGOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblEmployees]( [ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [EmpName] [nvarchar](255) NULL, [EmpShort] [nvarchar](255) NULL, [upsize_ts] [timestamp] NULL, CONSTRAINT [aaaaatblEmployees_PK] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ( [ID] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY]
Any ideas on how to accomplish this would be great!

I have a table called Appointment, for storing (you guessed it) appointments at a medical practice. If an appointment is cancelled, I want to collect a cancellation reason, so let's say that I create a second table called Cancellation which has a foreign key relating to the Appointment table's primary key, AppointmentID, and another column, Reason. Now, in order to indicate that an appointment was cancelled, I could include a Cancelled column in the Appointment table with a bit datatype, or instead I could infer that an appointment must be cancelled if it has a corresponding record in the Cancellation table.
It may be that it'd be better to store the cancellation reason in the Appointment table - But regardless, let's say I stick with the two-table solution described above, and I subsequently want to write a query to list all appointments which have been cancelled. If I had the Cancelled column in the Appointment table, I could simply query for all records in that table where that column's value was FALSE. If I went the other way and DIDN'T have a Cancelled column, I could instead write a query joining the Appointment and Cancellation tables to return all records in Appointment with a corresponding record in Cancellation.
That latter method, whilst slightly more complicated because it involves joining two tables, seems to me to be the most normalised. Instead of storing the fact that an appointment is cancelled in two different tables, that fact is only stored in the Cancellation table. Would there be a performance hit in using the two-table, 'inferred cancellation' method rather than just having a bit column in the Appointment table? Would that performance hit be enough to persuade you to use a Cancellation column in the Appointment table instead? And what about if I were to apply that method to other things associated with each appointment, e.g. Is it completed? Is it chargeable to the client or an insurance company? Is the client and in-patient or out-patient?

I know this is probably a flick of a switch but I cannot figure out which switch. Setup is SQL Server / Stored Procedures / DAL / BLL(skipped for testing) / PL. The stored procedure queries from only one table and two columns are ignored because they are being phased out. I can run the stored procedure and preview the data in the DAL but when I create a page with an ODS linked to the DAL and a GridView I get this error. I checked every column that does not allow nulls and they all have values. I checked unique columns (ID is the only unique and is Identity=Yes in the table definition). I checked foreign-key columns for values that are not in the foreign table and there are none. Any ideas why do I get this?
Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints.

Hi,
I am getting the above error when trying to load a report into my Web Application, I have tracked the error down to one specific field in my database. Even though this field is a NVarChar field and is of size 30 it would seem that there is an issue returning the value from the field. I can write it into the database no problems but when I try to get it out of the database it returns the above error.
e.g
MOB 401.908.804 - Fails
0401.907.324 - okay
8239 9082 (pager) - fails
Anyone got an idea on how to fix this????
Regards..
Peter.

I am stuck on finding a solution to transpose source data from a system via a metadata look-up table into a destination table. I need a method to transpose/pivot the source data into columns (which are by various data-types). The datatypes for each column are listed in a metadata table.
Source Data Table:
Table Name: Source
SrcID AGE City Date
01 32 London 01-01-2013
02 35 Lagos 02-01-2013
03 36 NY 03-01-2013
Metadata Table:
Table Name:Metadata
MetaID Column_Name Column_type
11 AGE col_integer
22 City col_character
33 Date col_date
Destination table:
The source data to be loaded into the destination table(as shown below):
Table Name: Destination
SrcID MetaID col_int col_char col_date
01 11 32 - -
01 22 - London -
01 33 - - 01-01-2013
02 11 35 - -
02 22 - Lagos -
02 33 - - 02-01-2013
03 11 36 - -
03 22 - NY -
03 33 - - 03-01-2013

I want to make a query, stored procedure, or whatever which will only display the primary key where there does no exist a foreign key in linked table.For example. If I had two tables with a one to many relationship.A [Computer] has one or more [Hard Drives]. I want to select only those computers which do not have a Hard Drive(s) associated with them. That is, show all computers where the Computer_ID field in the [Hard Drives] table does not exist. This seems simple but I'm drawing a blank here.

I need to delete records from a table (Table1) which has a foreign key column in a related table (Table2).
Table1 columns are: table1Id; Name. Table2 columns include Table2.table1Id which is the foreign key to Table1.
What is the syntax to delete records from Table1 using Table1.Name='some name' and remove any records in Table2 that have Table2.table1Id equal to Table1.table1Id?

Here is my issue I am new to 2005 sql server, and am trying to take my old data which is exported to a txt file and import it to tables in sql. The older database is non relational, and I had made several exports for the way I want to build my tables. I built my packages fine and everything is working until I start building relationships. I remove my foreign key and the table with the primary key will get updated for the package again. I need to update the data daily into sql, and once in it will only be update from the package until the database is moved over.
It will run and update with a primary key until I add a foreign key to another database.
Here is my error when running the package when table 2 has a foreign key.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "TRUNCATE TABLE [consumer].[dbo].[Client] " failed with the following error: "Cannot truncate table 'consumer.dbo.Client' because it is being referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint.". I'm working with an existing package that uses the fuzzy lookup transform. The package is currently working; however, I need to add some columns to the lookup columns from the reference table that is being used.
It seems that I am hitting a memory threshold of some sort, as when I add 3 or 4 columns, the package works, but when I add 5 columns, the fuzzy lookup transform fails pre-execute:
Pre-Execute
Taking a snapshot of the reference table
Taking a snapshot of the reference table
Building Fuzzy Match Index
component "Fuzzy Lookup Existing Member" (8351) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0x8007007A.
These errors occur regardless of what columns I am attempting to add to the lookup list.
I have tried setting the MaxMemoryUsage custom property of the transform to 0, and to explicit values that should be much more than enough to hold the fuzzy match index (the reference table is only about 3000 rows, and the entire table is stored in less than 2MB of disk space.
Any ideas on what else could be causing this?

I am looking for a good method to do table lookups in a 2003 SQL database. I am retrieving products from an item table and then want to do value lookups in related tables in the same database like category name, category type, brand name etc. These values are referenced in the item master file by guid links to related tables.I am using a datareader to loop through the Select records and then I am writing results to a tab delimited data file for a data conversion. I am limited to net 1.1 and so can't use the 2.0 executescalar for single lookups.What would be the more efficienct method to use?'Dim myItemData As New DataReader Dim myItemReader As SqlClient.SqlDataReaderDim myItemCommand As New SqlClient.SqlCommand Dim myConnection = New SqlClient.SqlConnection("server=sql01.xxx") myItemCommand.Connection = myConnectionmyItemCommand.CommandText = "SELECT ""mf_items"".""item_guid"", ""mf_items"".""item_description"", ""mf_items"".""item_wholesale_price"", ""mf_items"".""item_description_title"",""mf_items"".""item_cd"",""mf_items"".""category_guid"" FROM ""CDB006"".""dbo"".""mf_items"" WHERE ""mf_items"".""item_closed"" = 0 And ""mf_items"".""item_visible"" = 1 AND ""mf_items"".""item_available"" = 1"myItemCommand.Connection.Open()myItemReader = myItemCommand.ExecuteReader()Dim myfileout As StreamWritermyfileout = File.CreateText(Server.MapPath("out.txt"))myfileout.WriteLine("link" & vbTab & "title" & vbTab & "description" & vbTab & "price" & vbTab & "image_link" & vbTab & "category" & vbTab & "id")While myItemReader.ReadIf myItemReader.Item(4).ToString() > "" And Val(myItemReader.Item(2).ToString) > 0 Then'what method to to look up for example the category name using the category_quid referenced in the item master'Write out record for parts file

Hi
I'm designing a database for my final year project at University, and have run into a bit of a dilemma with one of the tables. Basically, it's an equipment loan database where both students and lecturers need to be able to book and borrow equipment. To avoid having two separate bookings tables (i.e. StudentBookings and LecturerBookings) I've got students and lecturers combined into one table called 'Borrowers'. The trouble comes because the clients want the lecturer storing in the booking information table, which can get quite messy because lecturer information is stored in the same table as borrower information meaning that I basically need to relate both the Booking.BorrowerID and Booking.LecturerID to Borrowers.BorrowerID.
In theory, I think this could be solved by creating a View called Lecturers that pulls the required information for Lecturers out of the Borrowers table and then link Booking.LecturerID to the ID of the view. In practice, I've got a couple of queries:
1) Is it possible to perform a JOIN on a view in the way that I would need to here?
2) To keep things nice and clear, is it possible to 'rename' the BorrowerID to LecturerID whilst creating the View?
Sorry if some of this isn't too clear. Please ask any questions to clarify what I mean if you need to.
Cheers
Jon

i have very very basic knowledge of SQL like the ability to add, delete, update, select records and the ability to drop/create tables but i want to know how to integrate a lookup table into a field (very much like MS Access users can do with ease).
here is my example;
i have two tables - Club and Player
Club:
Club_Id
ClubName
Abbr
Player:
Player_Id
Name
Club_Id
the idea is that a single club can have several players. in the players table, i want the Club_Id field to act as the drop down whereas if a player changes club at any time, i can just refer to that player and change his Club_Id by scrolling down a list of values in SQL Server Management Studio 2005.
how can this be achieved by any chance, help would be very much appreciated.

Hello,
I have few columns at some level, and now I need to add a column from another database table based on the values from one of the existing columns.
It seems that Lookup Transformation doesnt support parameterized query.
Any clue ?
Thanks
Fahad
