Looping Through Importing Identical Tables From Multiple Databases
Jan 30, 2008
I'm trying import 7 tables from each of 30 SQL2005 databases into a SQL2005 Consolidation database. I can simply create data flow tasks for each one but instead I would like loop through a list instead.
I've created a table to house the names of the databases from which I want to import the data.
I've created SQL task to return the database names from the table as a "Full Result Set".
I've assigned the result set to a user variable (type = Object) an named the result name 0
What I'd like to do is create a data flow task which connects to each of the databases and imports 7 specified tables from each database appending the table name with my database name in the result set.
I'm stuck on how I'd set the connection strings in my OLE DB Source in my Data Flow task. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have several distributed databases with identical schemas that I have added to my SQL server as a set of linked servers. For the sake of simplicity consider a schema with single table with one column called Info. I would like to present a view with columns DatabaseName and Info, that presents all the rows from all the databases in a single view.
How can this be achieved this using a SQL Server View?
If not is not possible using Views, what approach you recommend?

I am doing some administrative tasks and need to collect some principals information from multiple instances and user databases.
I have table "dbo.instances" with list of instances.
I have databases from "sys.databases".
How can I execute the query to get principals information from "sys.database_principals" on each remote instance and database. I know that can use cursor, but not sure how to do this with multiple servers and databases.

I have a couple of hundred flat files to import into database tables using SSIS.
The files can be divided into groups by the format they use. I understand that I could import each group of files that have a common format at the same time using a Foreach Loop Container.
However, the example for the Foreach Loop Container has multiple files all being imported into the same database table. In my case, each file needs to be imported into a different database table.
Is it possible to import each set of files with the same format into different tables in a simple loop? I can't see a way to make a Data Flow Destination item accept its table name dynamically, which seems to prevent me doing this.
I suppose I could make a different Data Flow Destination item for each file, in the Data Flow. Would that be a reasonable solution, or is there a simpler solution, or should I just resign myself to making a separate Data Flow for every single file?

Dear Readers,Is it possible, like in Access, to link to tables in other SQL databases that are on the same server? I have a query that I originally had in Access that queered from multiply databases. It did this by having those other tables in the other databases linked to the database that had the query.

Hi!
I have 7 source databases and one target database, all using the same structure. The structure is made of 10 tables, with foreign key constraints.
I need to merge the source databases into the target (which won't have any data before that process, but will already have the correct schema), and to keep the relationships between the records.
I know how to iterate over the source databases (with SMO foreach), but I'd like to know if someone can advise the best copy method for that context in SSIS ? (I don't want to keep the primary keys, but I need to keep the relationships...)
Any pointer most welcome!
best regards and thanks

Hello,
I am in the progress of designing a new section of my database and was thinking of creating a hole new database instead of just creating tables inside the database. My question is can you JOIN multiple tables in an SQL Statement from multiple databases. Ie, In the Management program I have a database called 'Convention' and another one called 'Services', inside the two databases there are many tables. Can I link say tblRegister from Convention to tblUser in Services?
Thanks

Hi,Currently, I am developing an application for my client. The issue is that the client has the office and warehouse which are in different locations. He wants the application run and updated all the data in to a database (called warehouse database). Every month, all records in warehouse database will be synchronized to another database which is identical with the warehouse database but it is run in his laptop at the office. Since networking is not an option, I have to create two identical database like this. Does any one know what is the good solution to this? Is there any synchronize feature in SQL Server 2005?Many thanks,

Hello All,
I have multiple SQL Server 2000 databases all identical in structure (Company1.mdf, Company2.mdf, Company3.mdf). I have a situation where while connected to Company1, i want to create a record in Table1 and have that same record automatically be created within Company2 and Company3.
If i was working with MSAccess, i could use linked tables where i would link Company2 and Company3 to Company1 Table1. This way if any changes are made, all three companies and working from the same record set.
My situation deals with mutiple tables that need to be in line with each other across mutliple databases.
Your suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

I have a database with three different tables having the exact same fields. New records are written to table1, before moving to table2 and ultimately table3. I was wondering if it's possible to run the same query on all three tables at the same time. I need to get all unique instances in the JC field from each table after a specified date. I get an "Ambiguous column name" error on the JC and TimeID fields.
SELECT distinct [JC]
FROM [table1], [table2], [table3]
where timeid > '20090900';

Hi,
I have two tables named Tab1 and Tab2. Both are identical in structure. The only diff is Tab2 has two more additional fields (FromDate and ToDate).
The structure is like below :
Col1
Col2 (Date field)
Col3
Col4
Also Tab 2 have
Col5 (From Date)
Col6 (To Date)
Now I want to transfer some set of reocrds from Tab1 to Tab2. The additional Tab2 field (Col5 and Col6) values should be the minimum and maximum values of Tab1 date field for the current set.
How to accomplish this? Kindly help me in this regard.
Thanks

Does anyone have a good query that would return records from two tables that are found in one, but not it the other table? In my situation I have 2 tables that are duplicate tables and I need to find an additional 3000 records that were added to one of the tables. I also have a composite key so the query would have col1, col2 and col3 as the composite key. So far I have tried concatenating the 3 columns and giving the result an alias and then trying to show the ones that were not in both tables, but have been struggling. Thanks..

I have two different tables... one for all Staff, and another for all Temp Staff. I need both to output to a datagrid, and so I need to grab both tables from a SQL query to output to my datagrid, but I can't seem to get the logic right for it to work. Can someone give me some suggestions on why my results are blank when I'm running this query? I thought a simple join would allow both sets of identical column names to coexist in peace...SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT dbo.StaffDirectory.UserName, dbo.StaffDirectory.LastName, dbo.StaffDirectory.FirstName, dbo.StaffDirectory.Dept, dbo.StaffDirectory.Title, dbo.StaffDirectory.EMail, dbo.StaffDirectory.LocationFROM dbo.StaffDirectory INNER JOIN dbo.TempStaff ON dbo.StaffDirectory.Location = dbo.TempStaff.Location AND dbo.StaffDirectory.EMail = dbo.TempStaff.Email AND dbo.StaffDirectory.Title = dbo.TempStaff.Title AND dbo.StaffDirectory.Dept = dbo.TempStaff.Dept AND dbo.StaffDirectory.FirstName = dbo.TempStaff.FName AND dbo.StaffDirectory.LastName = dbo.TempStaff.LName AND dbo.StaffDirectory.UserName = dbo.TempStaff.UName AND dbo.StaffDirectory.MDNo = dbo.TempStaff.MDNoIs something wrong here? It just doesn't work =(Any suggestions would be really appreciated.Thank you

I'd like to extend a package functionality.
I created it drag/drop way with hard-coded table names.
Now for the same source and destination connections I'd like somehow in a loop transform 20 source tables of the same structure to 20 destination tables of the same structure providing table names in a loop.
I also have in the package preparation SQL tasks such as dropping destination table if exists, and then re-creation , so it needs to consume a table name as parameter from my loop.
Is it doable ?

Sorry if this is a super-basic question...I'm used to join selects but not sure how to approach an append select (or something like it)
I have two tables with identical field structures: a Master table with 10,000 rows and a Custom table table with 1,000 rows
To keep it simple, let's say the two tables each have a FirstName field and a LastName Field.
Is it possible to use a View or a Select statement (or any other method) to 'append' the rows of both tables so that the result set still has only the two columns (FirstName and LastName) and has 11,000 rows?
Thanks for your help!

Hi,
wondering if anybody could help i wondered if there is a way i could loop through a number of tables and append them to a new database at the moment, i'm writing a SQL statment for each table and when there's about 50 this becomes slightly tedious......
this is my SQL statment in a SP,
INSERT INTO DB2.dbo.datatable1
SELECT *
FROM DB1.dbo.datatable1;
INSERT INTO DB2.dbo.datatable2
SELECT *
FROM DB1.dbo.datatable2;

Is there a way to loop??

Hello - I am somewhat new to stored procedures, so please be patient. I need to know how to go about wring a stored proc to loop through all of the tables in a db and delete the records in them.
I'm assuming a stored procedure is the best way to do this. If there is a better way, please let me know
I think I'm on the right track with this below
/* Create in each database that it is used in */
CREATE PROC usp_DBCCCheckTable
AS
/* Declare Variables */
DECLARE @v_table sysname,
@v_SQL NVARCHAR(2000)
/* Declare the Table Cursor (Identity) */
DECLARE c_Tables CURSOR
FAST_FORWARD FOR
SELECT name
FROM sysobjects obj (NOLOCK)
WHERE type = 'U'
OPEN c_Tables

Hello,
I have a query that's in development that uses several temp tables. In order to test the query repeatedly while it's being written I have the following code at the beginning to discard the temp tables. This allows the query can recreate the temp tables when called in the code.
if object_id('tempdb..#temp1') is not null drop table #temp1
if object_id('tempdb..#temp2') is not null drop table #temp2
if object_id('tempdb..#temp3') is not null drop table #temp3
if object_id('tempdb..#temp4') is not null drop table #temp4
if object_id('tempdb..#temp5') is not null drop table #temp5
Even though this works, it takes multiple lines of code. One of my queries has to drop 12 temp tables, thus 12 lines of code. I have been experimenting with looping the above as follows:
declare @n as nvarchar(3), @table as nvarchar(10)
set @n = 1
while @n <= 5 begin
set @table = '#temp'+@n
if object_id('tempdb..#temp'+@n) is not null drop table @table
set @n = @n + 1
end
Unfortunately, the above does not work. It gives this error message:
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Line 5: Incorrect syntax near '@table'.
I have also tried:
declare @n as nvarchar(3), @dropstmt as nvarchar(25)
set @n = 1
while @n <= 5 begin
set @dropstmt = 'drop table #temp'+@n
if object_id('tempdb..#temp'+@n) is not null @dropstmt
set @n = @n + 1
end
This does not work either. It gives this error message:
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Line 5: Incorrect syntax near '@dropstmt'.
Does anyone know how to get this to work?
Thanks.

I'm trying to create a report that will be data-driven and produce multiple reports based on a parameter. For example, 5 reports go out today based on invoice numbers from yesterday. Each invoice can have multiple trasnsaction lines and each line contains the invoice number. What I have so far is only taking the first invoice number (let's say it has 10 transactions) and sending me the same report 10 times and stopping.
I get nothing for the remaining 4 invoices/reports. Here is what I have. To me this should enter the distinct invoice no's from yesterday into #temp, while a invoice no exiists begin query with one invoice selected from #temp then delete that invoice no and select another one and repeat till no more invoice no's. But it's only going through the one invoice no.
select distinct InvoiceNo
into #temp

where Invoicedate between getdate()-1 and getdate()
declare @InvoiceNo VARCHAR(25)

I want to import data from a live site database into a development database (SQL Server 2005 Express) using the DTSWizard. Once I copy/paste the live database to my dev machine, I cant attach the live site database because it has the same name as the database on the dev site.A simple solution I would assume is to change one of the names. But I can't seem to change the "orignal file name". A backup/restore won't work for me because I made table/field changes to the dev database. Thanks --Dietrich
