Losing Precision Converting To Decimal From String!

Hello!
I´m having some trouble converting values represented as strings to the decimal data type.
I have a flat file source, from where I read some currency rates represented without decimals.
Before sending those values to my SQL Server destination, I want to convert them to represent correct values.
An example to clarify:
If my source contains a column named "curr_rate" with the value 000092500 I want to send it
to my destination as 9,2500.
So I set up a Dervied column component, converting my value like so:
((DT_NUMERIC,9,4)curr_rate)/10000
My problems is that the precision is lost, and all that´s sent to my destination table is 9,0000.
How should I go about to convert my strings without losing precision in the process?

I'd like to convert a Decimal value into a string so that the entireoriginal value and length remains intact but there is no decimal point.For example, the decimal value 6.250 is selected as 06250.Can this be done?

Hi,
I'm trying to import a text-file into SQL2005 by using SSIS. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work in the way I thought. Because I'm using the german version of SQL2005 I need to translate the items of my toolbox, so dont wonder if their names are not exactly the same as in the english versions.
Try number1:
a) My datasource is a flatfile, in the connection manager I changed the DataType for the input column to DT_DECIMAL. In my destination table the data type of ths column is decimal(20,4). Name of the column is "NXT_PUT_PX".
b) Running this package results in this error:
"Fehler bei der Datenkonvertierung. Die Datenkonvertierung für die NXT_PUT_PX-Spalte gab den Statuswert '2' und den Statustext 'Der Wert konnte aufgrund eines möglichen Datenverlustes nicht konvertiert werden.' zurück. Fehlercode: 0xC0209084. "
Translation of this is something like:
Error by converting data. Converting data for column NXT_PUT_PX returned state '2' and text 'Value couldn't be converted because of a potential loss of data'.
Try number2:
a) same as try number1
b) Adding a datatransformation-task (Datenkonvertierung), and set NXT_PUT_PX to be converted to DT_DECIMAL wirh SCALE 20.
c) Assigning this converted column to the destination column.
d) Running the package results in the same error as described above.
Try number3:
Same as try number 2 but the input column for my flatfile is now DT_WSTR with width 50.
Running this results in the same error message as above, but different errorcode. Errorcode is 0xC020907F.
Any hints how to do this conversion correct?

I am reading a data source where all data in a given column is held as a string containing a percent value with 2 decimal points:
03.52%
12.32%
92.10%
80.05%
27.92%
100.00%
[...]
etc...
I need to convert these into decimal values with up to four decimal points, like this:
0.352
0.1232
0.9210
0.8005
0.2792
1.0000
I am trying to use the derived column editor but since I am fairly new to this, I am getting my wires crossed. c
1. Remove the % sign from the string -- not sure if I should use TRIM, or REPLACE
2. Divide the value by 100 -- but don't I need to do some sort of type casting first?
3. Do a cast to convert whatever I got into the correct decimals -- perhaps this isn't required if I did step 2 as a typecast to decimals already?

This one cost me a solid half hour yesterday. I'm wondering why onearth the default precision for a decimal type is 18,0. Maybe I'mmistaken. A decimal datatype sort of implies that you'd want somethingafter the decimal!Question is, can I set this database-wide? Like all new decimaldatatypes have a precision of 12,6 or something like that? I haven'tseen anything about this in the googling I have done...

Hello,
Data is being trnasferred from an Oracle view to a SQL Server 2005 table.
Decimals can be previewed in the from the "SQL Command Text Window" but the columns in the target table which are defined as float shows the data being rounded to zero decimal places.
For the Data Source the always use default code page is selected.
Is there a way to retain the decimals?

Hi,
I have a staging table that has a float [DT_R8] column that shows 4 decimal places. When I use an OLE DB Source referencing that table to go to an OLE DB Destination referencing a table with an identical column the data gets rounded to a single decimal place. Needless to say this is really messing with the values.
I can see the Scale property in the Advanced Editor for OLE DB Destination but I cannot change it. Same for the OLE DB Source.
Oh, and if I do an insert using SQL in Management Studio I have no problem getting the 4 decimal places in. For example:
Insert into table2
(Col1, Col2)
select Col1, Col2 from table1
Moves all the data and keeps the 4 decimal places.
How do I do this without losing those decimals?

I've a SQL view performing a number of very precise calculations ie.495/(1.112 - (.00043499*((Col1 + Col2 + Col3))) + ( .00000055 * ((Col1+ Col2 + Col3)) * ((Col1 + Col2 + Col3))) - (.00028826 * Col4))) -450)/100Obviously this sometimes causes a precision issues because the floatand real datatypes don't hold precise values... My problem is thatconverting to the numeric or decimal datatype easily produces an errorif the precision is not big enough to hold the resulting output... Hello!
I would like to cast (convert) data type decimal(24,4) to
decimal(21,4). I could not do this using standard casting function
CAST(@variable as decimal(21,4)) or CONVERT(decimal(21,4),@variable)
because of the following error: "Arithmetic overflow error converting
numeric to data type numeric." Is that because of possible loss of the
value?

Hi all,
I am designing some reports for a German branch of my company and need to replace decimal point with a comma and the thousand comma seperator with a decimal point.
e.g.
‚¬1,500,123.00 to ‚¬1.500.123,00
Is there a property that I can change in the report designer to allow this to happen or is this something I need to convert in a Stored Proc.
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi All,
i'm using a "data conversion" object to convert a numeric field to a string just before i save the record set to the database.
the problem is when this numeric field is > 0 it looses the precision on its decimal value.
example, if numeric value is 0.32
after converting this to a string, the new value will be : .32
it's lost the 0 infront of it. i can't do this converion in the query level because it's a derived field, so i need to convert it to a string before stroing it.
when converting to string i'm using the code page 1252 (ANSI - Latin I). i also tried with unicode string both looses this 0 infront.
can any one help on this?

Currently writing a script to duplicate information in a database for a client. They have setup a userdefined table in our software that contains information that needs to go into the duplicate records. One particular column in this user defined table contains a decimal number in the 45mill range. The column that number is going into is an nVarchar column that requires a Hex value for our software.
Long story short (too late) I have been unable to find a system stored procedure that will convert the Decimal value into a Hexadecimal string.
Questions:
Is there one I just haven't found?
Anyone know of one already written by someone in the Community?
Or stop wasting time looking because there isn't one so I better hurry up and get one written and tested before my project is due?

I need to convert a value 5.300000000 to 0005300. Basically I want to remove the decimal point, pad the out put with a couple of zeros and return a value that is 7 bytes long. I may need to convert something like 10.300000000 to be 0010300.
Anyone have any thoughts?

but I want to show it in this format:
28:30:00
where 28 = hours, 30 = minutes, 00 = seconds

In Reporting Services, I have a decimal time field (18,2) in my report which I wish to display as HH:MM. Similarly, I req a sum of total hours and minutes as a summary. Whats the expression for doing this. I've googled far and wide and cannot find a definitve solution.

Hi. I I'm importing a text file with lot's of decimal values with this format xx.xx. The problem is that my locale is Portugal and the points are being striped off and are not being considered as decimal separators (for example I have values like 0.04 and in the sql server database i see 4). I have tried to change the locale but i receive a message saying that the locale is not installed in my system.

I have a column in my extract table as nchar(3) and in the destination (the same column with diff name ) it is decimal(3,0) .....i tried to use dataconversion transformation.....i even tried to use cast/convert fn's in the SQL Command (which i use in the "Source Transformation" to get the columns from the extract table).
I tried all the ways i can and still i get the same error..:
[OLE DB Source [1]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR.
An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E07. An OLE
DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider
for SQL Server" Hresult: 0x80040E07 Description: "Error
converting data type nvarchar to numeric.".
Can we actually do it...?? any help would be appreciated.

I have trouble converting a text field into decimals in a select statement.
The select statement is as follows:
select cast(ltrim(rtrim(units)) as decimal) as units
and I get an error message:
Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Line 23
Error converting data type nvarchar to numeric.
and the 'units' column contains ' 324,32 '

All of my currency columns are only storing 2 decimal places when I insert into the database but when I pull out the data with a SELECT statement, I always get 4 decimal places instead of the 2 that were inserted.
For example:
Database Price SELECT statement Price
100.56 100.5600
I have tried to use the CAST and/or CONVERT commands but I cannot get the output to come out as 100.56. Has anyone had a similar problem?

The TMDTOP column is the decimal data type with date records in yyyyMMdd format.

I am trying to setup an indicator value for an SSRS report to show green and red values on a report, based on the NRESULT value. The problem I am facing is that I have several different CASE statements that have the same logic, and they are processing just fine. NRESULT is a decimal field, so no conversion should be necessary. I do not know why I am getting the "Arithmetic overflow error converting varchar to data type numeric." error message.
Below is the CASE statement where the error is occurring. It is in the part of the ELSE CASE. The first CASE works just fine when the ELSE CASE is commented out. If I also change the ELSE CASE statement to say "else case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) = '-' then '0'", then it processes fine, too, so it has to be something I am missing something in the check on negative values. I do need the two checks, one for positive and one for negative values, to take place.
case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) <> '-' then --This portion, for checking positive values, of the CASE statement works fine.

Hello I'm trying to write a SQL Statement along the lines of....
SELECT stringField + ' : ' + STR(decimalField) AS myField FROM tablename WHERE myCondition = myValue
Where stringField is a String field and decimalField is a Decimal Field in my Table.
In this statement it converts the decimal field to a string value so that it doesn't throw a conversion error but unfortunatly it seems to round up the value to an integer value and cuts off all my decimal places.
How can I get it to keep the Decimal Places?

Hi,We have stored proc name proc_test(str nvarchar(30)). So far this prochas been invoked from a .NET application assuming that only Englishcharacter strings will be passed to it. The calls are likeproc_test('XYZ')We now have a requirement for passing Chinese strings as well. Ratherthan changing the calls throughout the application, we would like tohandle it in the stored procedure so that it treats the string as aunicode string. I have a SQL Table (tblImporData) with 2 columns: "Data" (varchar(40)) and "AccountNumber" (varchar(7)). I need to take the information in the "Data" column and parse it out into 3 different fields into a new table. I created the new table (tblExportData) with the following fields and data types: AcctNumber (varchar(7)), SiteName(nvarchar(10)), Balance (numeric(8,2)), and Active (nvarchar(1)).
Example of Data Field that I'm breaking up: 01Binford 001999Y
I've created a SSIS Package and in the dataflow I have an OLE DB Source going into a Derived Column. The derived column has the following information to split the data.
Derived Name Derived Column Expression Data Type Ln
AcctNumber Replace 'AcctNumber' AcctNumber String[DT_STR] 7
SiteName <add as new column> SUBSTRING(Data,3,10) Unicode string 10
Balance <add as new column> SUBSTRING(Data,13,6) Unicode String 6
Active <add as new column> SUBSTRING(Data,19,1) Unicode String 1
So it should split my example into the following:
AcctNumber SiteName Balance Active
12345 Binford 001999 Y
Everything works fine if the table I'm dumping the information to in SQL has varchar data types for all columns. But I need to convert my balance field from 001999 to 19.99. I tried putting a data conversion transform in that has the input column = Balance, Output Alias = Balance, Data Type = numeric [DT_NUMERIC], Precision = 8, and Scale = 2. I then changed the "Balance" data type to numeric(8,2) for the SQL table I'm dumping to, and added an OLE DB Destination to that table and mapped the columns.
When I try to run the package I'm getting an error at the Data Conversion that says the following:
[Data Conversion [698]] Error: Data conversion failed while converting column "Balance" (162) to column "Balance" (724). The conversion returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".
[Data Conversion [698]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_INDUCEDTRANSFORMFAILUREONERROR. The "output column "Balance" (724)" failed because error code 0xC020907F occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column "Balance" (724)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PROCESSINPUTFAILED. The ProcessInput method on component "Data Conversion" (698) failed with error code 0xC0209029. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_THREADFAILED. Thread "WorkThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0209029. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the thread has exited.
So, what am I doing wrong? Is there a different way I should be doing this? As always, your help is appreciated more than you'll ever know!

The string column value looks like as below. Each value has a size of 15 withing a string
'2.2020 30 4.0000'
The column value should match with user input as below. The result should show equal when it is compared. Currently, it results not equal since it is a string comparision. The last digit '0' needs to be ignored for decimal values.
'2.202 30 4.0'
I need to handle the decimal values in such a way, if staring value with '.' and last digit is 0 then replace with space ''. So, it should look like
'2 2 2 30 4 ' = '2 2 2 30 4 '
When this string is compared, it results in EQUAL.
I tried the below logic, which even replaces the integer value like 30 to 3 and 3000 to 3 and results in equal which is incorrect.
RTRIM(REPLACE(REPLACE(RT1.rate,'''+@DOT+''','''+@S PACE+'''), '''+@ZERO+''', '''+@SPACE+''')) = '''+REPLACE(REPLACE(@Rate,'.',' '), '0', ' ')+''' '
Ex:'2.2020 300 4.00' = '2.20200 30 4.0'
After replace, string looks like
Ex:'2 2 2 3 4 ' = '2 2 2 3 4 '
It results as EQUAL which is incorrect. I need only decimal value to be replaced not integer.
I am looking for a single string replace logic.
