Losing Rows From File To Destination Table - Need Troubleshooting Help

May 30, 2006

I am losing data from time to time and can not figure out where the rows are vanishing to. In essence, I have 5 files that I process. The processing occurs on a daily basis by one SQLAgent job that calls 5 individual packages, each doing a different piece of work.

I stage each file to a temp table, then perform some minor transformations, then union the rowsets from each file before landing to another temporary table. A subsequent package performs additional transformations that apply to the entire dataset, before inserting them to their final destination. Along the way, I reject some records based on the business rules applied. Each package in the entire Job is logging(OnError, TaskFailed, Pre and Post execute). Their are no errors being generated. No rows are being rejected to my reject tables either.

Without getting into the specific transforms, etc. being used in this complex process, has anyone seen similar unexplained behaviour? I've not been able to identify any pattern, except that it is usually only 1 or 2 of the record types (specific to a source file), that will ever not be loaded. No patterns around volumes for specific source files. There are some lookups and dedupes, however I've seen the records 'drop off' before reaching these transforms. I have noticed I had my final desination load not using fast load. However sometimes the records disappear before even getting to my final staging table which is inserting using fast load. I am going to turn on logging the pipelinerowssent event. Any other suggestions for troubleshooting/tracking down these disappearing records?

Thanks

To Validate # Of Excel Rows(source) And Sql Server Table(destination) Rows Are Equal

Feb 20, 2008

Hi,

When expoting data from excel to sql server table, using SSIS package, after exporting is done, how would i check source rows are equal to destination rows. If not to throw an error message.

How can we handle transactions in SSIS
1. when some error/something happens during export and the # of rows are not exported fully to destination, how to rollback the transaction in SSIS.

Any sort of help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Only Create Destination Flat File When There Are Rows Returned From Ole DB Source

Oct 25, 2007

Hi,

I have a data task with the following requirements:
1) Run query against database to retrieve rows
2) Add header and footer row to the result set. The footer row must contain a count of the records.
3) Write the rows to a fixed width file if there were any data rows

I have got to the point that I can create the file (using a set of tasks that includes derived columns, sorts, aggregation and merges). However the file is created regardless of whether there were data rows returned.
I can't check the row count before proceeding as this isn't set until the data task ends. And if I try to split them into separate data tasks (so that I can access this variable and perform conditional execution) it becomes harder to access the original rows.

Do you have any recommendations on the best way to achieve this?
It all seems to be very complex and I'm starting to feel that it would be easier to do this outside of SSIS...
Please help me to keep the faith!

For those interested this is a slightly simplified version of what I have so far (all within a single data task):

1.Run dummy sql to create header row 2.Run main SQL to retrieve rows
| |
| 3.Multicast
| | |
| | 4.Create footer row by doing sum() in aggregate task
| | |
| 5.Merge body and footer
| |
6. Merge header with body and footer
|

7. Create fixed width file

Integration Services :: Add Only New Rows To A Destination Table

Jul 22, 2015

How do I add only new rows to a destination table (when copying a table from another database every night) ?Every night I am copying a number of tables from one database to another.I only want to insert news rows (that are not in the destination table, but are in the source table) to the destination table.I might normally drop the destination table and just copy over the whole table, but in this case rows can be deleted from the source table, but I want to keep these old rows in the destination table (to maintain history). So I only want to add in rows to the destination table that have been added to the source table since last time.I guess I could copy the whole of the source table to a temporary table in the warehouse, then use a T-SQL merge command to compare and just add new rows to the destination table- but suspect that this is not the best way.

Problems With Deleting Rows In Destination Table When Exporting To Excel

Mar 29, 2006

Hi,

I export one table to Excel using Export Wizard. Second time I have used this creator I have checked option "Delete rows in destination table" because table already exists in Excel file.

During execution I get an error:

"Error 0xc002f210: Preparation SQL Task: Executing the query "DELETE FROM 'MyTable'" failed with following error: " and here is my translation from my language: "Deleting data from linked table is not supported by this version of ISAM"

I have also saved this package to a file and here is the full connection string to my Excel file:

Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:Documents and SettingsprzemekPulpitmyfile.xls;Extended Properties="EXCEL 8.0;HDR=YES";

Few days ago I have been using SQL2000 on the same machine and the same export was working properly.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

After SSIS Package Runs All Rows, All Fields Are NULL In Destination Table ???

Jul 21, 2007

I am copying a simple table from a Sql Server 2005 database to an *.sdf mobile database.

I am brand new to SSIS and I am probably doing something wrong. But after executing the SSIS package all the rows and all the fields are NULL in the destination database. I put a datagrid viewer between the OLE DB Source and the Sql Server compact edition destination and I can see the real data which is obviously not ALL NULL.

Does anyone have a clue as to why it would be doing this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks...

SSIS Database Table To Flat File Destination With Column Headings

Sep 8, 2006

Hi,

I have a simple enough task to complete that I cant seem to find the answer to.

The task is this

Select table x from the database and write it to a flat file complete with that tables column headings.

Now Ive managed to set up an ole db datasource and selected the table and Ive also linked it to the flat file output.  So now I can generate a flat file from the database.  However no column headings appear in the flat file.

I cant seem to find anywhere (like a checkbox) that will also output the column headings to the flat file.

Now I can add in Headings manually in the properties of the Flat File Destination object but the columns that appear in the flat file dont appear to be in the order that I requested them in the SQL.

So the question is how do I automatically have the column headings appear for flat file output (ideally without me having to manually add them in).

If it cant be done and I have to use a vb.net script instead then would anyone have an example script of how to do it?

Thanks in advance for anyone who manages to answer this.

Matt.

I/O Congestion Troubleshooting: Memory And Swap File Usage Question

Jul 20, 2005

We are hosting a 140 GB database on SQL Server Version 7 and Windows2000 Advanced Server on an 8-cpu box connected to a 15K rpm RAID 5SAN, with 4 GB of RAM (only 2 GB of which seem to be visible to theOS) and a 4 GB swap file. (The PeopleSoft CIS application will notpermit us to upgrade to SQL 2K.) We recently upgraded the server from4 to 8 cpus and the SAN disks from 10K to 15K drives. But we stillhave heavy SAN disk usage, sometimes at 100%, and read queues oftenaveraging 4 and peaking at 12.The CPUs are loaded at only 20-50%. (The politics are such that it iseasier to throw hardware at the problems.)We are looking into archiving, converting from RAID 5 to RAID 10, andat splitting the mdf file into several file groups in an attempt toget more disk heads into play. (We are also looking at rewriting theapplication to reduce the read volume and frequency.) Does anyone haveany other ideas?Incidentally, does swapfile get used when the physical memory equalsthe OS maximum? If the OS can only see 2 GB and we have 2 GB (actually4 GB) of memory, is the 4GB local swap file on the C drive unused? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Integration Services :: Split CSV File Based On First Column Value Changes And Load Into Destination Table In SSIS?

Import.csv file looks like,

TABLE_NAME DESC CODE
tab1 table1 A
tab1 table1 B
tab1 table1 C
tab2 table2 D
tab2 table2 E
tab2 table2 G...

First column values are table names which are already exists in target database. Next two columns[Desc],[Code] data gets populate from CSV file to table.

In this scenario, how to load tab1 data into the same table in destination and so on.

Which way will be more standard to accomplish this task? If its a script task using C#, looking for clear script to identify a value changes in the first column.

Losing Config File Between Child Packages And *$##@!- Passwords!

Feb 5, 2007

I have a parent package that uses Execute Package Task against three child packages. They are all setup to use the same configuration file, and the packages are all located in the same folder. Purpose of the configuation is to use the same connection strings for each child package.

I removed the path from the config. file specification to facilitate deployment. During debugging, the child packages cannot find the config file when they are run via the parent unless the full path is specified. If run standalone, a child package can find the config. file without the path. As I said, all dtsx filaes and the config file is in the same folder.

Also, the password-removal issue is killing me in development. Everytime I touch the config. file, it removes the password from the connection string. I have "protection level" set to "don't save sensitive" - I'd appreciate help with this too.

SQLEXPRESS Backup File Losing NETWORK SERVICE User When Copied

Mar 11, 2008

I'm using the methods of the Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo namespace within a .NET application to create a backup file from a SQLEXPRESS database. I can then restore the database from that backup device using methods in the same namespace. Here is a snippet from the restore code:

srv = New Server("MYPCSQLEXPRESS")

db = srv.Databases("washmaster")

Dim bdi As New BackupDeviceItem(BackupFileName, DeviceType.File)

Dim recoverymod As RecoveryModel

recoverymod = db.DatabaseOptions.RecoveryModel

rs.NoRecovery = False

rs.Devices.Add(bdi)

rs.Database = "washmaster"

rs.ReplaceDatabase = True

srv.KillAllProcesses("washmaster")

rs.SqlRestore(srv)

This works great as long as I used one of the backup files that I created directly on the disk. However, my application has a utility that allows the user to copy the backup files onto another drive, such as a CD or a thumb drive and when I try to restore from the copy of the backup, I get the following exception:

....Cannot open backup device..[filename]...Operating system error 5(Access is denied.)

The reason I get this error is that the "NETWORK SERVICE" account was removed from the file permissions when the file was copied.

How can I copy a backup to another drive and preserve the "NETWORK SERVICE" account? If I can't do that, is it wise to try to add the account back to the file before using it to restore or is there a better way?

Thanks,
SJonesy

DB Engine :: October Dates Losing Hour On Table Insert

May 5, 2015

I have a datetime field used to store a date of birth. When inserting the date of birth into the table it works fine. But when the date of birth is in the month of October, it takes an hour off. For example, if the date is 04-OCT-1993, it inserts as 03-OCT-1993 23:00.

It only happens for dates in October. It's being inserted via a .Net table adapter. It just so happens that October is the month that daylight savings kicks in parts of Australia (an hour is added), but I think this must be a coincidence.

Flat File To Table - Rows Out Of Order

Jun 12, 2007

Hi,

I noticed something strange today. I created a pkg that reads a flat file and writes the rows to a table.

In checking the data in the file against what's in the table, I noticed that the rows were inserted in a different order than they are in the file.

All the rows appear to be in the table correctly, but they're just not in the same order as in the file. I've never seen this before. But I checked very carefully, and this is indeed the case.

Is this normal??

Transact SQL :: Copy ALL Rows From DB Table Out To Txt File

Jul 29, 2015

Copy out all data from a DB table into/across delimited text file(s) ensuring that each text file size is no more than 3MB.Have created a SSIS solution where it achieves this requirement ..well sort of achieves the requirement ... Here it what the current solution (sparing the minute details) does in a nutshell & Problems with it:

1) Created a function (Script below) which finds the
maximum row size in bytes in a given DB table & uses it to calculate
how many rows can be copied out into a text file without exceeding 3MB size limit.

For instance: A DB table selected had 788 rows in total and this function for this particular table returned a value of 181 rows { select [dbo].[udf_GetRowPartitionNumber](‘<TableName>’)as #ofRowstoPartitionTableby --181}  meaning in order to not exceed the requirement of 3MB per text file, we had to copy all the data from DB table across (create) 5 text files {Select
CEILING(788

Integration Services :: Get FileName Fo Each File Created Via Dynamic Flat File Destination

Jul 24, 2015

Need to know how I can get the dynamic filename created in the FlatFile destination for insert into a package audit table?

Scenario: Have created a package that successfully outputs Dynamiclly named flat files { Format: C:Test’Comms_File_’ + ‘User::FileNumber’+’_’+Date +’.txt’

E.g.: Comms_File_1_20150724.txt, Comms_File_2_20150724.txt  etc} using Foreach Loop Container  :

* Enumerator Set to: “Foreach ADO Enumerator” with the ADO object source variable selected to identify how many total loop iterations there are i.e. Let’s say 4 thus 4 files to be created

*Variable Mappings : added the User::FileNumber – indicates which file number current loop iteration is i.e. 1,2,3,4

For the DataFlow task have a OLDBSource and a FlatFile Destination where Flat File ConnectionString is set up as:

@[User::Output_Path] + "Comms_File"+ @[User:: FileNumber] +"_" + replace((DT_WSTR, 10) (DT_DBDATE) GETDATE(),"-","")+ ".txt"

All this successfully creates these 4 files:

Comms_File_1_20150724.txt, Comms_File_2_20150724.txt, Comms_File_3_20150724.txt, Comms_File_4_20150724.txt

Now the QUESTION is how do I get these filenames as I need to insert them into a DB Audittable. The audit table looks like this:

CREATE TABLE dbo.MMMAudit
  (
AuditID      INT IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL,
     PackageName     VARCHAR(100) NULL,

FileName           VARCHAR(100) NULL,
     LoadTime        DATETIME NULL,
     NumberofRecords INT NULL
  )

To save the Filename & how many records in each file in our Audit Table, am using an Execute SQL Task and configuring it as this:

Execute SQL Task

Parameter mapping - Mapped the User Variable (RecordsInserted) and System Variable( PackageName) to Insert statement as shown below

SQLStatement: INSERT INTO [dbo].[MMMAudit] (
PackageName,NumerofRecords,LoadTime)
 (?,?.GETDATE)

Again this all works terrific & populates the dbo.MMMAudit table as shown below BUT I also need to insert the respsctive file name – How do I do that?

AuditID PackageName FileName  NumberOfRecords
1           MMM       NULL                      12
2          MMM  NULL                23
3          MMM  NULL      14
4          MMM  NULL              1

OLE DB Destination - Redirecting Rows

Feb 14, 2008

I'm getting some strange error handling behaviour when I tried to redirect rows when an error is encountered at the OLE DB Destination. I enabled the fastload option and set the maximum insert commit size to 10,000. My package is trying to insert 1,000,000 rows. When the row containing bad data is encountered, the entire batch is redirected to a separate table with no table constraints. So I have approx 990,000 rows of good data inserted, and approx 10,000 rows in an error table. However, only 2 of the 10,000 rows are actually bad data.

I changed the filter in the data source to reload 5 rows from the 10,000 rows of bad data. The 5 rows include the 2 rows of bad data. The fastload option and max insert commit size at the OLE DB Destination are not changed. When the package completed, 3 rows were inserted to the destination and the 2 bad rows are redirected again. Even though this is the outcome I wanted (only the real bad data is redirected), shouldn't all 5 rows be redirected since they should all be treated as a single batch?

My second question is, is there a way to get the best of both worlds - be able to load lots of data as fast as possible and only redirect the rows that are actually bad?

Thanks.

Integration Services :: Excel Destination With Run Date-1 Inside File Not The File Name

Aug 26, 2015

I have a ssis package where I need to have excel destination.  In the Excel file, I need to have few rows with some text and then populate data below the text. One the text is like this:

Data as of:  08/25/2015

if the report ran today, then Data as of will have Yesterday. So, if the user opens that excel file after a week, then user should see same  Data as of:  08/25/2015. not today()-day(1).

I was planing to handle on excel side with today()-day(1). but it only works the day it was run. Then the excel file is open after few days later, then it might as Data as of:  08/30/2015 which is not true. It should still stay Data as of:

08/25/2015 on what ever date the excel file is open. The SSIS package  runs only once.

How do I handle this so that whenever user open the file, they will see Data as of:  08/25/2015. This is not a column in excel. It is like a description of data in excel.

File System Task - Move File With Dynamic Destination Path

Oct 9, 2006

I am having an issue with the File System Task.

I was wondering if there is a way to 'Move File' with the File System Task inside of a For Each Loop container but to dynamically set the Destination path variable.

Currently, this is what I have:
FileDestinationPath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileSourcePath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileNameAndLocation variable - set to blank

For Each Loop Container Iterates through a folder C:TestFiles that has .txt files in it with dates in the file name. Ex: Test_09142006.txt. Sets the file path (fully qualified) to the Variable Mapping FileNameAndLocation.

Script Task (within For Each Loop, first step) Sets the FileDestinationPath to the correct dated folder within C:TestFiles. For example, if the text files I want to move are for the 14th of September, it takes FileDestinationPath and appends the date folder to the end of it. The text files have a date in the file name (test_09142006.txt) and I am picking this apart (from FileNameAndLocation in the For Each Loop) to get the folder date. (dts.Variables(User::FileDestinationPath?).Value = dts.Variables(User::FileDestinationPath?).Value & ? Month & _? & Day & _? & Year & ?) which gives me C:TestFiles9_14_2006?.

File System Task (within For Each Loop, second step) This is where the action is supposed to occur. I want it to take the FileDestinationPath and move the FileNameAndLocation file (from the For Loop) into this folder for each run.

Now as for my problem. I want this package to run everyday but it has to set the FileDestinationPath variable dynamically according to that days date. Basically, how do I get this to work since I cant hard code the destination path variable from the start? I have the DestinationVariable on the File System Task set to the FileDestinationPath variable, after the script task builds it. However, using FileNameAndLocation as the SourceVariable on my File System Task tells me that the Variable FileNameAndLocation? is used as a source or destination and is empty.?

Let me know if I need to clarify further...I may be missing something very simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Capture System.IO Rows From Incoming File And Insert Into Table

Ok, I'm not quite sure how to approach this one.  This is a VB.NET console app in which I want to capture each row and throw it into a table.  The reason being, they want a report on what was processed...which I'll be able to do easily in Reporting Services 2005 once this crap is in a table where it should be.

I know how to export the data but don't know how to delete 'old' data rows from excel.

SQL Server Destination Not Loading All Rows

Jan 23, 2008

I have a SSIS package that transfers data from three SQL Server 7 servers to a SQL Server 2005 database. This package has about 30 different tables it copies. The table structures in the source database and destination tables are identical. About 25 different tables load without any issues. I have about 5 tables that load some nights without a problem. On other nights, the data transfers seem to randomly (though usually the most recent records) ignore some of the data. I have logging turned on and receive no errors. It just appears to stop loading data.

I should also mention that I truncate each destination table before begining and each table is loaded from data from each of the 13 source database (I am combining data from 13 regional database for reporting purposes). This is done using a Foreach Loop Container that updates the Server/Region connection string for each region. I am using the OLE DB Source connection to the SQL Server Destination. I have tried as well with the OLE DB Destination with the same result (and no error). I do not do any manipulation to the data on the transfer, but added a "RowCount" transformation between the source and destination and it gives the correct number of rows, but not all the rows get loaded.

Flat File Destination - Don't Create File If 0 Records

Apr 17, 2008

Hello friends,

I have the following (simplified):

1. Flat File Source
2. Conditional Split, Case Good = !ISNULL(KEY) Case Error = ISNULL(KEY)
3. Case Good -> Writes to Good Flat File (with timestamp in the title)
4. Case Error -> Writes to Error Flat File (with timestamp in the title)

Most job runs have no errors but the error file is created as a zero byte file anyway. If there are no error records I don't want the error file created. How might I accomplish this?

Thanks

SSIS Oledb Destination Not Writing Any Rows

Nov 20, 2007

I have a Dataflow task with oledb source that is using SqlCommand to retrieve data and oledb destination to write the source output to a table. I have access to both the source and destination databases.

The problem is the destination component is not writing any rows to the destination table eventhough the Source component is returning rows (I can see them in the Preview and the source database table as well).
I'm using "Table/View Name from Variable" for destination.

The Package executes without any errors but there is no output.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
