We have a Server that is set to use 80mb of a 128mb machine. The machine is also set to use up to 300mb of Virtual memory as needed.
After running for 10 days, we got the message "Low on Virtual memory". We did some looking and found SQLServer was using 300mb between real and virtual memory.
So the question: Is there a manual method to get SQLServer to release extra memory with out stopping and restarting the service?
I have a SSIS package that is constantly running out of virtual memory, right now I am on a development server, running only this package. The package is moving data from one table into another on the same server in the same database. The server has 3 Gb of memory and is only running SS2005 and SSIS. I am a local admin on the server and running the package through BIDS, once again for our initial testing. I tried setting the property BufferTempStoragePath to our E drive so it can utilize the 100 Gb of free space we have but that doesn't seem to work either. I have also tried setting the MaxRowSize to many different values to no avail. I am constantly getting an error, see below for exact error, when it gets through roughly half the load. Moreover it reports this error about 500 times in the progress report if I let the package run to completion. Finally, when all is said and done the package has moved the data successfully but the package always shows as failing.
I have googled continuously on this problem but have not found a resolution. I did see on a post here where it was recommended to run the package out of process, however I don't see the benefit at this point when this is the only package I am running. I also don't understand why it would report the error so many times and fail the package when it is completing successfully? Source and Destination have the same number of records at the end of the task. Could someone please try to make sense of this.

I have a sbs 2003 sp2 server running exchange 2003 sp2 it was running fine until one day I got this low virtual memory error, I checked the memory usage in the task manager and it is using 7 gigs of virtual memory, I increased the max size from 6 gigs to 8 gigs just to see what happens and now it is using 9 gigs of virtual memory. I don't have any clue as to what the problem is! Please Help!!!
I have two instances of SQL Server running on my Development machine.I am having some performance problems and while investigating theproblem I saw with the Process Explorer form Sysinternals that bothinstances consume each 800 Mbytes of memory!I experimented with sp_configure and by giving both instances a fixedmemory size. Both methods do not seem to have any effect. Can anybody explain me why SQL Server is using so much memory? Thanks for any information.Evert WiesenekkerPSBesides the northwind database I only have one simple extra database(70 Mb in size) installed.
I am wondering if there is a way to solve a virtual memory error? We randomly get the following error when trying to run sycn over the http websync. Some clients have 512 MB running sql express, others are full instances that have 1.5 GB.
The merge process could not allocate memory for an operation; your system may be running low on virtual memory. Restart the Merge Agent.
for the last six months or so my pc has been shutting down all applications for no apparent reason when a 'low virtual memory' bubble appears. I have removed dozens of items, such as games, image editos; all programmes that require a lot of memory but it is no good. Every 40mins or so the pc decides to shut everything down and where it is impossible to start any further applications, unless I log off and on or shut down the pc myself. I really am fed up with this, its so annoying. Is it because of a virus or do I still have too much on my pc?
Hi,We have a prod server running on SQL server 2000 64 bit. It is a4cpu server with 16GB of RAM. we have a maxmemory setting of 15.5GBfor sql server. Inspite of 15GB being available for sql server, itstill uses paging file space, a lot. When looking thru task maanger wecan see sql server using 15.5GB of Memory usage and 22GB of Virtualmemory usage. I don't understand why it should even be using closer to7GB of Paging space, when it has so much memory. How does SQl serveruse Virtual memeory vs Physical memory?HAs anyone seen this before.ThanksGG
Hi, Is there any setting in IS that I should have adjusted in order to avoid this message?

I have 2 clusters I am reducing to 1 cluster with 2 instances. In order to save programming time I need to rename the sql instances to use the old names after the old servers are removed from the network. I plan on changing the IP address to match the old servers. Can this be done ?
Local SQL 6.5 SP4 on a Windows NT SP4 workstation (Pentium 350 / 128 MB). SQL server has 32 MB of RAM. It starts well but begins continuously eating up virtual memory by 16k blocks in a second, until it takes all virtual memory.
Server's shutdown generate following error in Event log System section:
Event ID: 7011 Source: Service Control Manager Description: Timeout (120000 milliseconds) waiting for transaction response
When I start Server from command prompt with -f switch, it did not eat virtual memory, and did not generate any error in Event log at shutdown.
I see following error when I execute a SSIS package as part of a job from within SQL Server

SQL Server has 6 GB memory allocated to it. How can I best troubleshoot this issue?
I have a large set of data that I need to match against another large set of data. The reference table has 9.8mill rows and my input has 14.6mill rows. I started with a new project. I added my connection, then a task to clear the result table, then my data flow, then my OLE source, then my Fuzzy Lookup task, then my SQL Server Destination. I set the connection of my OLE source and set the query to pull the data. Then I set the connection of my Fuzzy Lookup task, set the reference table and told it to create a new index (the problem also occurs if I use a generated index) and then set up the matching criteria. Then I set the connection and destination for the SQL Server Destination.
After setting all this up, I hit Run. The thing ran great until ~ 800k rows and then it failed. I ran it several times and it always failed right around 800k with a message saying there was not enough space and then an error with buffers being passed to the Fuzzy Lookup component. I opened Task Manager and watched the resources as it ran and was amazed at what I saw. The Fuzzy Lookup component eats up every bit of Virtual Memory available and when it can't take any more, it errors out. I tried setting the Max Memory setting on the component and it seems to have no effect. I also played with the buffer settings on the data flow task to no avail. I even went as far as to put an identity on my input table and create a function that outputs selects that use a between on the identity to break the data into 600k chunks. I set up a ForEach component and DTS variables, but the Fuzzy Lookup component does not free the VM after the iteration of the ForEach component!
I ended up running each chunk of 600k one at a time. I have to automate this for the future, so I need a solution. Does anyone have an idea for me?

Hi all, Is it just my server, or am I missing a point here. SQL Server 7.0 Ent Edition on NT4.0 SP6 running only one 5GB database.
About 30 fat clients connecting to it via the application. It also has about 20 connections (concurrent) coming via our web users. The sqlserver.exe uses upto 868MB out of the 1GBmemory on the server. The server has "dynamically configure sql server memory" turned on. After a reboot, sqlserver.exe starts with 38MB of mem and slowly starts to grow until it takes up almost 90% of the physical mem that is available on the server.
Hi all: New to sqlserver 2000. When I run an application the sqlserver memory goes up and with each window that gets opened the memory goes up again. All this seems logical. However, when I exit the application, the memory remains at the last level it was in before closing the application. Is this normal? Thanks Terry
Running sqlserver 2000 on a w2k server with 1gb of memory. After a reboot the memory usage is around 500m but quickly climbs. At 1 point it was up to 1.5gb so it must have been swapping. Are there any good docs about this or any recommendations on how to limit sqlserver from using all the memory. It is the only application on the server so it isn't affecting anything else so maybe it isn't a problem. I just wanted to get people's inpit on this.
Help me, Help me. When I backup the MSSQL databases using ARCServe 2000 in the server, the memory of sqlserver.exe is 1.5G in task manager. After backup was finished, the memory of sqlserver.exe cannot released. It is still 1.5G. Our users can get the resource of that server but they get it slowly. I need to stop and restart the MSSQL service. The server can back to normal. Can everyone fix it ?
My server is Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition with SP4 Windows SQL 2000 Standard Edition With SP3 Memory is 2G RAM
Would anyone have any suggestions/advice on how to determine what is causing the memory usage for sqlserver.exe to increase a dramatic pace in windows task manager? What would be a good resolution to slow down this memory usage? Thanks!
Out techs informed me that they are getting reports of a system slow down. When they look, they find sqlserver.exe has lots of memory allocated to it. They reboot the server and then it runs okay for a few weeks. They tell me this just started happening recently.
SQLServer itself has not been touched in months. They are, however, starting to use one of the databases heavier.
I found a setting where you can set max_server_memory. Any problems if I set this to a value?
Hi Gurus,Our system is using SqlServer 2005 on XP.( On my machine, only thisapplication access SQLServer.) The sqlserver memory is configured to128MB (Min)~512 MB(Max)After our system get started, sqlserver takes about 100M memory. Afterthe system runs for a while, the memory used by sqlserver goes up to512MB. Then we exit our application and expect the memory usage ofSqlServer could be dropped down to the min value. Unfortunately, itseems SqlServer never release any memory until we restart it.I thought dynamic memory configuration means that SQLServer can autoshrink memory usage if there is no more database accessing. But basedon my observation, SQLserver just holds all the memory . :( How canwe let the sqlServer shrink the memory usage accordingly to workload?I do appreciate for your help!Best regards,Jennifer
Hi I was not able to connect to SQL Server machine. On examining the Error log (which was huge 53MB), I found the following messages that filled 95% of the logfile. Is this something to do with memory allocation.
Someone, please let me know what is going on. After the server reboot everything works fine. I am worrired that this message may occur again.
Thanks Machilu

Hello. I have received the follwoing error upon an attempt to Browse the Cube. All other tabs are functional, including the Calculations tab. We are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and SQL Server 2005 SP2. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
**EDIT** - Have confirmed SP1 for VS2005 is installed both locally and on server, also.

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.
I have a Windows sever 2012 with sql server 2012 enterprise. Ram size is 22GB. Sometimes SQL sever takes 95% memory. My question, How to reduce memory size without killing any process because it's production server. So there are many background process is running. And,Is there any guides to learn why Memory is raise d so high and how to reduce it.
Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.
My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?
I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?
sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??
