Cannot Insert The Value NULL Into Column 'OrderID' -- BUT IT IS NOT NULL!

Apr 2, 2007

I am getting this error: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'OrderID', table 'outman.outman.Contact'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails." -- But my value is not null. I did a response.write on it and it show the value. Of course, it would be nice if I could do a breakpoint but that doesn't seem to be working. I'll attach a couple of images below of my code, the error, and the breakpoint error.

Howto Insert A Null DateTime Into A Sql Server 2005 Database

Apr 2, 2008

I'm importing data form an Excel file to a Sql Server Database. Some of the data imported represents time as a double type so i convert the times into DateTime to be inserted into the database. The time values that aren't available in the Excel file are 0.. so what i want to do is insert null into the database for all the values that are 0 in the excel file... How do i do that based on this code i have so far:protected void ButtonImport_Click(object sender, EventArgs e){PanelUpload.Visible = false;PanelView.Visible = false;PanelImport.Visible = true;LabelImport.Text = "";OleDbCommand objCommand = new OleDbCommand();objCommand = ExcelConnection(); OleDbDataReader reader;reader = objCommand.ExecuteReader(); while (reader.Read()){DateTime? in_1 = null;DateTime? out_1 = null;DateTime? in_2 = null;DateTime? out_2 = null;   int emp_id = Convert.ToInt32(reader["emp_id"]);DateTime date_entry = Convert.ToDateTime(reader["date_entry"]);if (Convert.ToDouble(reader["in_1"]) != 0)in_1 = ConvertDoubleToDateTime((double)reader["in_1"]);if (Convert.ToDouble(reader["out_1"]) != 0)out_1 = ConvertDoubleToDateTime((double)reader["out_1"]);if (Convert.ToDouble(reader["in_2"]) != 0)in_2 = ConvertDoubleToDateTime((double)reader["in_2"]);if (Convert.ToDouble(reader["out_2"]) != 0)out_2 = ConvertDoubleToDateTime((double)reader["out_2"]); ImportIntoAttendance(emp_id, date_entry, in_1, out_1, in_2, out_2);} reader.Close();}protected void ImportIntoAttendance(int emp_id, DateTime date_entry, DateTime? in_1, DateTime? out_1, DateTime? in_2, DateTime? out_2){ SqlDataSource AttendanceDataSource = new SqlDataSource();AttendanceDataSource.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SalariesConnectionString1"].ToString();AttendanceDataSource.InsertCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text;AttendanceDataSource.InsertCommand = "INSERT INTO Attendance (emp_id, date_entry, in_1, out_1, in_2, out_2) " +"VALUES ('" + emp_id + "', '" + date_entry + "', '" + in_1 + "', '" + out_1 + "', " +"'" + in_2 + "', '" + out_2 + "')"; int rowsAffected = 0;try{rowsAffected = AttendanceDataSource.Insert();}catch(Exception ex){LabelImport.Text += "<font color=red>" + ex + "</font><br />";} }private DateTime ConvertDoubleToDateTime(double dbTime){string[] SplitTime = dbTime.ToString().Split('.');string hours = SplitTime[0];string minutes = String.Empty;string time = String.Empty; if (dbTime.ToString().IndexOf('.') != -1){if (SplitTime[1].Length >= 1){if (SplitTime[1].Length == 1)minutes = Convert.ToString(Convert.ToDouble(SplitTime[1]) * 10);else if (SplitTime[1].Length > 1)minutes = SplitTime[1];}}elseminutes = "00";time = hours + ":" + minutes;return Convert.ToDateTime(time);}

Insert NULL Into INT Column

Jul 12, 2007

I've 2 tables with a relation:

Customers

- CustId

- Name

- LevelId ==> FK relation to Levels.LevelId

Levels

- LevelId

- Description

What I want to do, is save a NULL value in the Customers.LevelId when no level is selected. I'm using C#, a CLR StoredProcedure and the DbType.Int32 for that column. When I try to save a null value, it says "cannot convert null to int", what is clear. But in the database it is possible to save a NULL value.

The question is: How to save a null value in a int column via a C# CLR Stored Procedure?

Insert Null Value Into Varbinary(max) Column

Apr 20, 2008

Hello,
I'm working on a website that allows users to upload small JPEG files. I followed the article at http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/120606-1.aspx. On the webpage I'm using a formview control to insert new records in the database. As suggested in the article I removed the "type='object'" from the insert parameters for the image column. The data is saved by using a sqldatasource with stored procedures. The image column is of type varbinary(max) and allows null values. Everythings works fine as long as the user uploads an image. The data is saved correctly and on another page the image can be viewed. However if the user does not upload a picture and tries to save the new record the following error is thrown:
Implicit conversion from data type nvarchar to varbinary(max) is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.
In the formviews iteminserting event I have the following code: Dim imageBytes(fileupload1.PostedFile.InputStream.Length) As Byte            fileupload1.PostedFile.InputStream.Read(imageBytes, 0, imageBytes.Length)            e.Values("Image") = imageBytes What code should I use in case the fileupload1 has no file?  I tried something like:                        e.values("Image") = dbnull.value  But that doesn't work.  Any suggestions?

SSIS Tries To Insert NULL Value Into A Destination Column Ignored In The Mapping.

Jan 12, 2008

Hello everyone,

I am having a little problem with a simple package and I do not know if this is a known issue or that I am missing something.

I have a data flow task, a simple one, with an oledb source pulling data, using a select statement, from a sql server 2005 instance, and an ole db destination pointing to a table in a sql server 2000 instance. Both intances are standard edition. The table in the destination has a column which allow null values and has also a default constraint (getdate()), and this column is not present in the source. When I map the columns in the destination, I leave this column as "ignore", not being mapped to any column from the source. The problem is that when I execute the task, SSIS is trying to insert NULL value into this column, so the package fail with the error "can not insert NULL value into column myColumn". I wonder why is it trying to insert NULL value if the column is not mapped to any column from the source.

Is this a known issue or I am nissing something in the settings?

If the destination table has rowversion or identity columns, there is no problem ar all. I ignore those columns in the mapping and SQL Server feeds them as expected.

Thanks in advance,
Alejandro Mesa

Stuck Between Cannot Insert The Value NULL Into Column 'ID' And Violation Of PRIMARY KEY Constraint

Jan 20, 2004

Cannot find an answer to this in previous posting, though there are similar topics.

My primary key "ID" requires a value (is not nullable), and not explictly providing it with one when I update a new record gives the following error:

Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table 'AdClub.mediaq.News'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table 'AdClub.mediaq.News'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

However, trying to stuff that field with a recordCount+1 value (or any value), I get this error:

Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'Primary Key'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'News'.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'Primary Key'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'News'.

Cannot figure this one out. The value I'm providing for that field is known to be unique, but the SQL Server spits it out each time.

Is there a way to have the ID primary field automatically update with a new value when a new record is generated? This is how I used to do it in Access, but cannot find a similar feature in SQL Server. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but right now I'm stuck in this "Catch-22" situation.

Please help!

Data Warehousing :: Cannot Insert Value NULL Into Column When Executing Stored Procedure

Sep 22, 2015

I received this stored procedure that I modified to run on my system.  Specifically, I only changed the database and filter text and left the rest alone.  When I execute the stored procedure, I get the error:

Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Procedure ObjectNotesInsert, Line 18

Here is the actual stored procedure I am running. I should add that I can execute each step and get results and if I hard code the resulting values into the procedure, the execution works.

SQL 2005 Select Into Temp Table Then Insert Causes Null Issue

Jul 20, 2007

Here is the scenario that I cannot resolve

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tEvents](

[EventID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[EventName] [varchar](1000) NOT NULL,

CONSTRAINT [PK_tEvent] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

(

[EventID] ASC

)WITH FILLFACTOR = 90 ON [PRIMARY]

) ON [PRIMARY]

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tEventSelections](

[EventSelectionID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[EventID] [int] NOT NULL,

[StatusPID] [int] NOT NULL,

CONSTRAINT [PK_tEventSelections] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

(

[EventSelectionID] ASC

)WITH FILLFACTOR = 90 ON [PRIMARY]

) ON [PRIMARY]

then try this

SELECT e.eventName, es.statuspid

INTO #tmpTable

FROM tEventSelections ES

INNER JOIN tEvents E

ON E.EVentID = ES.EventID

INSERT INTO #tmpTable (eventName) values ('Another One')

DROP TABLE #tmpTable

this causes a null insert issue

(0 row(s) affected)

Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 7

Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'statuspid', table 'tempdb.dbo.#tmpTable___________________________________________________________________________________________________________000000000130'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

The statement has been terminated.

So how do I allow the null, as the not null is coming from the ES table. But I want to allow the insert to happen without having to create the table first, this code works in SQL 2000 but fails in 2005, inserting all fileds into the insert also has it's own issues as some of the fields are delibertly left blank so in some circumstances the data returned to a grid displays correctly.

This method has been used in quite a lot of stored procedures and will be a nightmare to correct if each has to be edited.

One example of the use of is to return a dataset and then add a row at the bottom which is a sum of all the rows.

Regards

In the flat file SampleID and Product are populated in the first row only, rest of the rows only have values for Rep_Number, Protein, Fat, Solids.

SampleID and Product are blank for the rest of the rows. So my task is to fill those blank rows with the first row that has the sampleID and Product and load into the table.

Working In VB.Net 2005 Inserting NULL Into A Field In Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Feb 2, 2007

I am update/inserting records threw a web form in vb.net. I need to insert 'NULL'  into my microsoft sql server database.  I am not talking about the below line of code where website is the name of my paramater.  If i do that it will just place a blank into that field in the database.  If i dont enter anything into that textbox I want it to to say NULL in that field. So if I go into the actual table in the SQL Server Management Studio and look at the website field of the recored I just added or updated and did not type anything into the web site textbox it needs to say NULL.  I also tried the second line of code but that places a single quote in front and behind NULL. So the field will have the value 'NULL'.
website.value = txtwebsite.text.tostirng
 if txtwebsite.text ="" then
   website.value ="NULL"
end if
The reason why I need the NULL there is because I bind the website filed to a hyperlink template in a gridview.  The actual text of the hyperlink is bound to PAYER which is a name of a insurance payer but the navigateto is bound to the website field.  If i do not enter any data into the website field and it stays as NULL, then when my gridview is loaded, payers that dont have a website will not be underlined and user wont have the option to click on them since there is no value for the navigateto.  But if i use my form to update/add a payer and leave the website textbox blank in puts a blank into that field in my database and when it loads that new row into the gridview the PAYER is underlined and u can click on it but it will just take u to the web site is unavailable page.  So is there anyway to actaull have NULL placed into a filed and not just blank space

Sql 2005 Bogus Error?!?!?! 'Column Does Not Allow Insert Of NULLS'...(Duh!)

Oct 31, 2007

I have been battling this for 2 days! I could write a book on what does not work. I have even tried entering the data manually through the 'Open Table' SSMS function from the Object Explorer. I only have 5 records in the table. The first 4 I added a week or so ago during dev from the ASP.Net 2.0 (w VB) website that is the front end for this DB. I use a DAL between the site and DB.I added two new fields the other day and everything seemed to work fine. Now I get 'Siteid CANNOT BE NULL'. I abandoned attempts to Insert from the Website. The following was done directly through SSMS.I switched all of the columns (except PK) to allow nulls. I could add/update a record, no problem, even with directly typed data in some fields. I could also add one with only one field populated (some have defaults, some do not). Here is the table code:USE [bro122]GO/****** Object: Table [dbo].[tbsaDrem] Script Date: 10/31/2007 18:46:34 ******/SET ANSI_NULLS ONGOSET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ONGOSET ANSI_PADDING ONGOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[tbsaDrem]([DremID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,[CustID] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_CustID] DEFAULT ((0)),[RealityYN] [bit] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_ContractYN] DEFAULT ((0)),[DreamName] [varchar](30) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_DreamName] DEFAULT ('New (Modify Name)'),[SiteID] [int] NOT NULL,[SitePremPric] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_SiteBasePric] DEFAULT ((0)),[NbhdBasePric] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_NbhdBasePric] DEFAULT ((0)),[PlanCtlgID] [int] NOT NULL,[PlanPric] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_PlanPric] DEFAULT ((0)),[SpecTotl] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_SpecTotl] DEFAULT ((0)),[DremTotl] AS ((([NbhdBasePric]+[SitePremPric])+[PlanPric])+[SpecTotl]) PERSISTED,[Modified] [datetime] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_Modified] DEFAULT (getdate()),[ModUser] [varchar](25) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_ModUser] DEFAULT ('None'),[Created] [datetime] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaScenario_CreatedDate] DEFAULT (getdate()),[ts] [timestamp] NOT NULL,CONSTRAINT [PK_tbsaDremID] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([DremID] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 60) ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY]GOSET ANSI_PADDING OFFGOEXEC sys.sp_addextendedproperty @name=N'MS_Description', @value=N'This is flagged with a Trigger when a Dream becomes a Reality. Changing The Column From NULL To NOT NULL

Feb 28, 2008

Hi all,

One of my columns is the table has some Null values, and I Would like to stop having NULL values into that column any more.

I know, If I alter the column to NOT NULL will throw me an error, since it does a batch update.

Is there any way to achieve this...

Thanks...

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Cannot Define Primary Key Constraint On Nullable Column But Column Not Null

Sep 30, 2014

We have a database where many tables have a field that has to be lengthened. In some cases this is a primary key or part of a primary key. The table in question is:-

/****** Object: Table [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] Script Date: 09/25/2014 14:05:09 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
SET ANSI_PADDING ON
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd](

[Code] ....

The script I am using is

DECLARE@Column varchar(100)--The name of the column to change
DECLARE@size varchar(5)--The new size of the column
DECLARE @TSQL varchar(255)--Contains the code to be executed
DECLARE @Object varchar(50)--Holds the name of the table
DECLARE @dropc varchar(255)-- Drop constraint script

[Code] ....

When I the the script I get the error message Could not create constraint. See previous errors.

Looking at the strings I build

ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] DROP CONSTRAINT PK_DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] Alter Column [Patient System Number] varchar(10)
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] ADD CONSTRAINT PK_DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ([Patient System Number] ASC,[Episode Number] ASC,[CensusDate] ASC)
WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]

They all seem fine except the last one which returns the error

Msg 8111, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot define PRIMARY KEY constraint on nullable column in table 'DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd'.
Msg 1750, Level 16, State 0, Line 1
Could not create constraint. See previous errors.

None of the fields I try to create the key on are nullable.

Problem With Insert , Cannot Insert NULL Value

Jan 30, 2007

Good evening,

I have created a table like this:

create table Teacher(tid integer,
fname varchar(20),
lname varchar(30),
primary key(tid));

Well i insert many Teachers uning : insert into values ... etc.
These inserts are being placed in an sql file named insert.sql.
All the insertions are fine.

Now I'm trying to insert another teacher using another file e.g. my_insert.sql and it says cannot insert NULL into teacher tid etc.

Why does this happen,in my my_insert.sql file all the filds of the tid are filled with non null values?

What's going wrong?
