MS SQL Server 2000, And ASP.NET 2.0 Membership Controls (login)
Dec 14, 2007
when my ASP.NET 2.0 web site working against MS SQL Server 2000,
I Usually have a connection string to the DB, I create a connection, and start working on the data.
While reading about the MemberShip provider of ASP.NET 2.0 (Login control, Forgot password, etc.),
I read that it's possible to save the MDF file of the membership controls, within the APP_DATA folder.
But how can it be ? the MDF file must be at the server folder,
How can I access this MDF file ? with which connection string ?
How does MS SQL Server 2000 syncronize against this MDF file within my APP_DATA folder ?
And by the way, if my hosting company allow me to use 1 db schema of the MS SQL Server 2000 server,
Does this method (saving the MDF file within thr APP_DATA folder) allow me to use multiple schemas ?
Thanks.

hello, I have developed a website using asp.net 2.0 and sql server 2005 express edition. I have used the built-in membership, roles and login controls in my website. now i need to change the database server. i have to use sql server 2000 instead. as asp.net 2.0 uses the ASPNETDB.mdf for member,roles and login controls, so how can i do it? i can easily export the database from 2005 to 2000 but how my application controls will know where to look at for those data. I am clueless. please help me. thanks in advance.

Hello,I'm programming asp.net 2.0 with a mySql database.Now I want to implement membership-features.I consider converting mySql to SQL server 2000 because then I don't have to build a custom membershipprovider.my question is: does membership work as good on sqlserver2000 as it does on sqlserver2005? (my host doesn't support sqlserver2005 (yet).another question: can I expect problems converting the database from mysql to sqlserver2000?

(Sorry this was posted to VWD2005 Express by mistake)
I have created a simple project using ASP.NET 2.0 which enables a user to login. I created the login user using the Web Administration Tool in Visual Studio 2005.
I created everything locally and it worked.
Locally I have 2 databases. One containing normal data (which my site uses to populate a GridView control) and the other being ASPNETDB.MDF - which contains membership (login user) data. These 2 databases sit in the App_Data folder which is in the root of the project.
I have a remote database which is hosted in a shared environment.
This is just the one database and it appears to have all tables in the one database (membership tables and normal tables - such as the one I use to populate my GridView control).
I uploaded the website and using the Database Publishing Wizard I uploaded the database data to the shared host. I also changed the connection string to point to my remote database.
If I visit the website the GridView is populating correctly (pulling data from the remote database) but when I try to login it crashes. The error is "Access denied creating App_Data sub directory".
The membership login details for the user I created are in the remote database as I have compared the data in it to the data in my ASPNETDB.MDF local database.
If I launch from within Visual Studio 2005 then it allows me to login perfectly well.
Please does anybody know why it won't let me login when I access it via the website?
Many thanks for any help,
Graham

We have succesfully moved SQL server to a new machine and this same machine will also be running IIS 5.1 to host our intranet. We will be doing the actual developing on other machines and publishing the site to the new machine.
Now, when I went to test the site, it all comes up just fine, but logging in is a problem. What do I need to do to configure the new SQL server to accept new members, logins, etc.
Oh, and actually membership is still on the "old" SQL.
When I tried to login, I get this:
Server Error in '/' Application.
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
Thanks for the information.

Hi, I am porting a massive VB6 project to ASP.net 2005. Most of the code is fine, however because the original developers used lots of data controls and my own time restrictions I thought to replicate the functionality by using Sqldatasource controls instead.
These data controls are bound to DBtruegrids. The project has has lots of code like...
AdodcOrders.Recordset.RecordCount > 0 or If AdodcOrders.Recordset.EOF or AdodcOrders.Recordset.MoveNext() or
AdodcDetail.Recordset!FieldName
The problem is the sqldatasource control doesn't have a recordset/dataset property which I can access and manipulate, or does it? What should I do to get round these? The project has thousands of lines like this in so its not feasible to rewrite it (although if I could I would!).
Any suggestions please gratefully appreciated.
many thanks

Hi,
I am using SQL Server 2000. But i am not able to see the BuiltinAdministrator account in the logins list in Enterprise Manager but by default the owner of the system gets access to all databases and objects in the system. I would like to restrict that by restricting the access of BuiltInAdministrator account but it is not visible. Is there any option to be enabled to make that visible?
Could you please help me in this issue..

As an 'SA' I thought that you have permission to do anything on the server. Running an update command from Query Analyzer is throwing this error:
SQL Server 2000 SP3
Server: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
Login failed for user 'sa'.
The table is in the dbo schema.
Has anyone seen this error before?

In my site, when a user registers, I need to create rows in additional tables besides aspnet_Users. So, I need to be able to pass the generated userId guid to subsequent SqlCommands. I'm having a terrible time with this. What's the correct way to set up a SqlParameter so that it will accept a guid? I keep getting this error: "Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier."
I've tried creating the parameter both with and without a SqlDbType.
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue(paramName, guid);
and
SqlParameter p = new SqlParameter(paramName);p.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Guid;cmd.Parameters.Add(p);
and I get the same error either way.
Driving me nuts! Any help appreciated.

I have a problem that I'm hoping someone can give me some advice with: I have created a website that uses .Net 2.0, SQL 2005, and ASP.NET Membership to manage users. Everything works fine until it comes to calling reports, in particular setting report parameters:
Exception Details: Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ReportServerException: The permissions granted to user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)
Source Error:
Line 30: End If
Line 31:
Line 32: Me.rvInvoice.ServerReport.SetParameters(p)
Line 33: Me.rvInvoice.Visible = True
Line 34:
The report worked fine before the security model was changed to use the Membership classes which leads me to conclude that I have not configured the Report Server to deal with the network account that the ASP pages are now using.
I have looked at the example project for configuring extensions with no success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hello all,
I am having problems running a stored proc from an aspx.cs file. Basically I want to extract data from webForm controls and create a new record in a DB table. I have watched the "Getting Started" videos on thi site, and the only difference between my code and the code of the demonstrator is the connection string. My conn string:- dataSrc.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ProjectTblConnString"].ConnectionString;Demonstrator conn string:- dataSrc.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("ProjectTblConnString");When I debug with the string as shown by the demonstrator the error list reports that ConnectionStrings is a property and I am trying to use it as a mothod, which is fair enough, but I am just confused as how it worked for the demonstrator and not myself. When I debug with the code I used above I get no error, but nothing is inserted in the DB.Also, it looks as if the only class in my aspx.cs file that is actually being executed is PageLoad() - the remainder of the code seems to be ignored. All,
My ISP does not allow me to remotely connect to my hosted SQL Server DB--how can I use SQLDataSource and other data bound controls in development?
Here are my specs:
IDE: Visual Web Developer Express 2005
Database: MS SQL Server
ASP Version: ASP.NET 2.0
The SQL Server is hosted centrally at the ISP; basically I have been given the connection string parameters.
My question is this:
Do I use two web.config files (one for when I develop locally and one for when I deploy remotely)? If so, how? Will the SQLDataSource control find the connection string defined in web.config on the remote server? I don't want to have to write all of the database code and it would be a big loss of one of the major benefits of using ASP.NET 2.0 if I do.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Leslie

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.
***** end of error message***
Can someone help to figure out what went wrong? thx.

Hi all,
Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors.
First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.
My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "mydatabasename" requested by the login. The login failed.
/index.asp, line 10 which is dbConnect.Open cstring
from this peice of code:
sub dbOpen()
set dbConnect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cstring = "DSN=mysqldsn; Trusted Connection=yes"
dbConnect.Open cstring
end sub
I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)
I also notice under mywebsite home panel there is a connection string option. Do I do anything with that?
Definatley a lot more to it than XP's II6!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oracle and Teradata are able to capture the windows/client login that connects to their database with a functionnal ID.I've searched around and I don't think MS SQL can do this...I administer SQL 2014 server and also SAS Enterprise guide product. I've created sql server logins for several teams so everyone shares the same sql server login which is used to bind the SAS library to my SQL server database.
However, when looking at activity monitor, I can't drill down to which user is executing a particular query. I only see the SQL login which is share amongs 200 other folks.On the other hand, when they connect from SAS to Oracle or Teradata, I can see the shared login + additionally their windows NT login used to connect to SAS which is awesome....they can't fool me by using a shared/funcionnal ID....i still see who's using that ID...
