MSDE 2000 Replication Conflict
Jun 28, 2006
I am using MSDE 2000 for my replication. the problem is that althought at time creating publication it inserts GUID into every table but if one table in 2 nodes has same primary key, it inserts only one row ( accorrding to prority ). there are some Conflict Reslover methods that can be used for this purpose. i wanted to ask that is there any other way for me to resolve this conflict. i am asking for a new way because my database schema has been created and a lot of coding behalf of that schema has been done.
I'd be thankful if you guide me.

i went through the documentation but i was not clear on following, here is the scenario :-
a Central server is having SQL Server 2000
3 Remote Locations :- Each having 4-5 no of computers, connected on a Lan, and on one of the machines MSDE 2000 will be running.
My Questions are :-
1. Can remote locations, update data locally and send changes (say in every one hour) to central server. If yes, then how ??
2. Same way they can receive updates from Central Server on whatever was updated on Centra Server or on the 3 remote locations. If yes, then How ??
any help will be highly appreciable.

I have some rogue replication conflict tables that I can't delete because they are system tables. They are names aonflict_<tablename> and bonflict_<tablename>. They are definitely not needed anymore. How can I delete them ? Does anyone know how to delete a system table ?

Hi all,
Is there a way to replicate all data in a table but on certain columns avoid throwing a conflict? I have serveral SQL servers running Tx-Rep and almost all of the tables contain a DateModified field. I don't really need to check for conflicts on this data but want to keep it in tact as much as possible.
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Hello everybody,
we are running business critical application in 24*7 enviroment. Application is written in java and use JDBC 1.2 to read and write data into SQL 2005 SP2. We also use push transactional replication and as a part of this replication we run snapshot agent regulary.
Problem is that our java application receives regulary error: "Could not complete cursor operation because the table schema changed after the cursor was declared." After some further investigation with Profiler we found out, that snapshot agent calls sp_MSreplupdateschema with high probability this procedure changes at least modify_date of some tables included in replication. In profiler we also found that JDBC broadly uses cursors to access data. After the call sp_MSreplupdateschema all cursores declared before the call failed.
We tried to setup JDBC driver not to use cursors by setting SelectMethod=direct in configurations file. But this started deadlocks.
From my point of view it`s legitim to use cursors and snapshot agent together. The question is why snapshot agent modify table schema and how to solve this problem?
I send same question into Replication forum. Till now without any answer. I hope to have more luck there.
Thanks in advance for any advice

hi all
let's say i have three publications running on a network of one central server and four shops.
- a merge replication that keeps the price-table up to date between all shops and the central server
- a transactional replication of the arrived_orders-table from the central server to the shop in case
- a transactional replication of the sold_products-table fromt he shops to the central server.
the whole replication network runs on a distribution database that is located on the central server.
now, i've noticed already a few times, when a conflict occurs in one of the replications, also all other replications stop working. (for example when the transactional replication can not insert a line in the sold_products table because of a violation against a UNIQUE constraint in the central server).
Is it normal that also the merge replication and the other transactional replication don't do their inserts, updates etc any more????
Thanks

Hi Everyone!
Here another post on replication.
When conflict occur, I want the user to be able to select witch row to keep and witch to delete.
I've look for system stored procedure, that could help me do the resolution but I've founded nothing.
So I've thought that I could do it by hand, with UPDATE/DELETE query
Take the row in the %TABLE_NAME%_Conflict table and copy it into the real table, than delete the row.
I this the good way of doing it?
Is there any other way?
Thanks !

Hi
I faced with strange problem.
From time to time, during syncronization I get the following errors at the subscriber:
ERROR: -2147200992
SOURCE: Merge Replication Provider
TEXT: The merge process could not store conflict information for article 'Products'. Check the publication properties to determine where conflicts records are stored. When troubleshooting, restart the synchronization with verbose history logging and specify an output file to which to write.
ERROR: 2812
SOURCE: OFF1SQLEXPRESS
TEXT: Could not find stored procedure 'MSmerge_cft_sp_49D28CEAFF8A4ACC5C5462B5027D4E4D'.
ERROR: -2147199481
SOURCE: Merge Replication Provider
TEXT: The Merge Agent was unable to update information about the last synchronization at the Subscriber. Ensure that the subscription exists at the Subscriber, and restart the Merge Agent.
After I refresh the snaphot at the publisher, these errors disappear and the syncronization is completed without any problem. And I can sync easy again week or two..
What is the problem?
What is the right solution?
Yep, I can continue to refresh the snapshot each time when the error appears, but..
maybe there is another approach?
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
i think i have serious problem. i have almost 20,000 rows with the following conflict on a table (generated by merge replication over a period of around 3 weeks) :
'The row was updated at 'SubscriberServer3.DatabaseA' but could not be updated 'at 'PublicationServer1.DatabaseA'. Metadata mismatch'
i have 20 remote subscribers & 1 publisher. The above message originates from practically everywhere.
Besides dropping(not practical at the moment) & recreating replication to get rid of them, what else can i do to resolve this problem?? Do i have to resolve this problem row by row?? i'm at my wit's end. Please help!!
Thanx in advance.

I have been evaluating merge replication, 'push' subscription on SQL Server 2014. If the default resolver is used (I refer to @article_resolver parameter of sp_addmergearticle), all seems to work as expected. However if I use "Microsoft SQL Server Subscriber Always Wins Conflict Resolver" (or any other MS standard resolver for that matter), if the Subscriber is on a different machine, the merge agent invariably gives the following error: "The process could not initialize <resolver_name>. Verify that the component is registered correctly."
This does not happen if the Subscriber is on the same machine as the Publisher and Distributor.
The problem seemed to exist in SQL Server 2008 according to some posts but it has been apparently fixed since then. I've tried the following:
- @partition_options = 0, as was suggested somewhere.
- Copied ssrpub.dll (the resolver dll) to the Subscriber machine (should not really matter as this is 'push' subscription?)
- Registered ssrpub.dll with regsvr32 on the Publisher/Distributor machine.
I've also run sp_enumcustomresolvers on the Publisher machine, and it happily showed all standard resolver, including the "Microsoft SQL Server Subscriber Always Wins Conflict Resolver".
Another thought is, I'm using SQL Server Express as the Subscriber (on the remote machine). Perhaps it does not support custom resolvers? (I'm using the full SQL Server in the 'local subscriber' variant, which does work OK as I mentioned before).
Note also that if I create a new publication via SSMS, the Resolver tab of the Article Properties dialog is empty, i.e. it does not list any resolver. The same tab contains the full list of resolvers though, if opened for an existing publication.

I have gone through BOL and various online resources including this one and I can't find any examples on how to use custom conflict resolvers to generate a result row which is a combination of the rows to be merged.
BOL says it can be done, but suitable examples are missing. I have found various posts requesting examples from up to a year ago, but can see no replies with relevant information
In particular I would like to see examples of
1) A stored procedure based custom conflict resolver
2) A business logic handler written in VB .Net
Here's hoping

I'm having some problems getting Interactive Conflict Resolution working under SQL Server 2000 SP4. I have set "Allow Subscribers to resolve conflicts interactively" under the Resolver tab for the article in the publication. I have set "Enable synchronization using Windows Synchronization Manager" and "Resolve conflicts interactively" under the Synchronization tab for the subscription. I have set "Resolve conflicts interactively" under the Other tab for the subscription properties in the Windows Synchronization Manager. However, when I generate conflicting data in the publishing and subscribed DBs and synchronize using the manager, the resolution is automatic and a warning pops up informing me that "conflicts occurred while syncronizing the data and were resolved according to defined rules." Am I missing anything here?

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.
I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).
When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:
"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."
Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?
I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Hi
Sorry for asking what may be a rookie question... We have configured transactional peer-to-peer replication in a testing environment with two servers, each publishing and subscribing to each other. If we write a piece of code that updates the same row on both servers with different values, we are not seeing data conflict issues. The data updated on server 1 propagates to server 2, but at the same time data updated on server 2 is updated on server 1. This leaves the records on each server out of data.
I expected my test case to produce errors, but instead I got inconsistent data. How do you turn on data consistency checking?
Thanks in advance

understand there's a concurrency limit with MSDE 2000 of around 25 (and there's no GUI) but apart
from that, are there any aspects of SQL Server 2000 functionality (from the .NET applicaiton code's point of view) that
are "disabled" in MSDE 2000?

Trying to transfer databases from MSDE to SQL. When I use SQLEnterprise Manager - DTS - import or export, it works for the firstdatabase, but then fails for the others. I select the to and fromdatabases using DTS - Import - 'MS OLE DB Provider for SQL Server',then select 'Copy objects and data between SQL Servers'. It failswith the generic error message: 'Copy objects failed', nothingfurther. I tried to just copy data, and it doesn't work totally. Ontwo databases, it said that it copied everything, but when I go inunder Enterprise manager, some of the tables are incomplete, i.e. nodata, table shows up in the list, but if you try to look at it, itsays that it is missing or empty. Also, one table was not evencopied. In the other two cases, I get errors, does not copy alltables. I get errors, like insert fails, but the column it referencesfor the table does not even exist in that table. Any suggestionswould be appreciated.

I have a distributed inventory control database that I am going tomigrate from Access to SQL Server. I am going to use SQL ServerReplication to keep the data current. There will one SQL Server 2000 database at HeadOffice, and about 200branches will each have MSDE 2000.For tables that are the same for each branch (e.g. StockItems,Suppliers), I'm going to use Transactional replication with theHeadOffice as Publisher. There is no need for Merge replication, because only HeadOffice will be changing this data. For tables that are updated at the branches (e.g. deliveries, sales),there shouldn't be anyconflicts either, as each branch will only update data that isspecific to it. So, transactionalreplication with the Branches as Publishers seems like the answer.BUT, MSDE 2000 only handles merge replication as a publisher, so itlooks like I'm going to have to use Merge Replication if I'm am goingto use MSDE.Question: Do you think that it worth buying a full SQL Server licensesfor each branch, so that I can use Transactional replication with thebranches as publishers. Or, should I stick with MSDE 2000 and Mergereplication. Also, are there any other reasons why MSDE won't beadequate as the database at the branches. Thanks,Craig

Summary:
Failed to insert detail rows in master-detail scenario during merge replication. Not always, sometimes.
Topology:
I've got 5 servers running MSDE, one of them is central publisher/distributor for merge type of replication.
There is no row or column filtering: all subscribers have all data. Central publisher resolve conflicts with default revolvers.
Some tables have relations: master-detail (i.e. orders-ordersDetails, etc). Relations are defined in tables as FK.
My application which fills data use datasets with relations between tables defined the same way as in the sqlserver. So app first work with dataset which is unable to receive details without master record. When data updated to msde, it is done without errors, means master and details table updated correctly (tables at msde has relations too)
Applications running on 4 different locations and fill data to local db (subscriber to central publisher).
Sync occurs every 15 minutes in the following order (merge agents run at publisher/distributor):
subscriber1: every 15 minutes, starts at 00.00h
subscriber2: every 15 minutes, starts at 00.03h
subscriber3: every 15 minutes, starts at 00.06h
subscriber4: every 15 minutes, starts at 00.09h
Sync lasts for average 15 sec, never 3 min.
Problem details:
Message:
The row was inserted at 'CentPub.myDB' but could not be inserted at 'Sub2.MyDB'. INSERT statement conflicted
with COLUMN FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK_OrdersDetails_Orders'. The conflict occurred in database 'MyDB',
table 'Orders', column 'OrderID'.
Description
CentPub is central publisher which just collecting data from subscribers. So, Order was made on one of the other subscribers different than Sub2, mean user at location3 insert order with details in local database, after a while, CentPub take this order to its database (MyDB), after that CentPub try to sync with some of the other subscribers (i.e. Sub2 == location2) and then for some unknown reason orderDeatils failed to insert in Sub2's orderDeatil table because constraint 'FK_OrdersDetails_Orders' conflict.
After that happened, thing goes like in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307482 (generally: in next session, failed order details are deleted
from CentPub, which means deleted from all subscribers after syncs.)
The problem is that subscribers have tables with relations, so Cause isn't as describe in MS kb because my tables have relations at all servers.
After finished replications I have Orders without details records at all subscribers, so I assume that merge agents sometimes (not always) try to insert details prior to master table during the same sync session.
In resolution section of MS kb article they say 'Mark the subscriber foreign key constraints as NOT FOR REPLICATION'.
In relations definition I see 'Enforce relationship for replication) options which is enabled in my tables.
If I turn that option off, is it possible to happen that my subscribers receive details without master record? (My observation of behavior says that will not happen(that will lead to problems in my app because my datasets enforce relations too).
Deleted record I bring back to life with conflict manager in EM, but I'd like it never happen.
Is it a bug, side effect or something I do it the wrong way?
Thanks and regards

I am about to setup an application server. This app will generate reports and instead of just having a HTML page up, I am considering running dotnetnuke type portal to offer the userbase a better interface for the reports, info, announcement, etc.
Server isn't too bad (2x1.7Ghz Xeon I think, 2GIG RAM) type of setup (may be little more or less). App doesn't require as much resources, but we are planning for the future )
While I have some resource to play with, I also need to make sure I don't load much that may impact the application performance. In my experience, SQL Server 2000 will take a lot of resources even when not used as much. So I am considering MSDE.
I am curious however, WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SQL 2000 Server Vs MSDE 2000 ?
Beside no Client tool and mostly command line specific command, what else there to convince that I should go for server vs desktop engine?
Now our company has Enterprise license for SQL, so I am not worried about the cost (well a little maybe), but mostly wondering about performance.
If you think of any reason why I go to SQL Server 2000 over MSDE, please let me. Otherwise, I think MSDE in this case is the appropriate RDBMS to go for.

Impu

Hello!
I have a problem with creating Merge replication between two instances of MSDE 2000. In the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324992/, published by Microsoft, described, that it is possible.
I am creating Merge Publication at MSDE 2000, with Distributor and Publisher configured at same machine, with options "Allow Pull Subscriptions" and "Allow Anonymous Subscriptions". There is no problem with creating of Publication. Even snapshot generation finishes successfully. Also I create a login with SQL Server Authentication and "System Administrators" database role at the publisher in order to connect to it from Subscriber.
The problem occurs, when creating anonymous pull subscription to this publication at another instance of MSDE. During initial synchronization an error occurs:
The process could not connect to Distributor '<publisher_server_name>'. Login failed for user '<login_created_at_publisher>'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. The step failed.
Although I didn't use Windows Authentication at all, so Subscriber doesn't need to connect to Distributor using trusted SQL Server connection.
What is a problem and how can I workaround?
Note: The same works correctly, if MS SQL Server used as a Publisher instead of MSDE.
Please, help!
I can provide publication and subscription creation scripts, if required.
