MSDE 2000 Set-up: Invalid Instance Name

Nov 9, 2006

Thanks in advance.

I installed SQL 2000 Client Portion in my local computer: No server functionality. I selected my computer name as an instance name. Installation went OK.

Now, I am trying to install MSDE in my computer. Error comes in early part of installation: It says, "The instance name specified is not valid"

Please, any advise and suggestion.

Named Instance Problems (Default Of 7.0/2000 Instance)

Oct 10, 2001

I am trying to set up a Named Instance of SQL 2000 on the same machine that has a default instance of SQL 7.0. The setup always completes and I am able to register the Named Instance of the SQL Server with which it was installed on. However, when I try to connect the users to the database, with both windows and SQL authentication, I receive a SQL server not found error. I have tried an alias setup as well as physically specifying the port number in settup up an ODBC connection.
Has anyone ran into similar problems?
Also, has anyone been able to successfully complete the process as mentioned above?

User Instance=True Causes Invalid Connection String

Feb 14, 2006

Whenever I use "User Instance=True" as in the connection string below, I get an invalid connection string error. If I take it out, the connection string generates other errors.

"Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;User Instance=True;AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|DbName.mdf;Data Source=.\sqlexpress;"

Removing User Instance=True always eliminates the invalid connection string message.

BTW, I tried both Data Source=.\sqlexpress and Data Source=.sqlexpress.

Multipile Instance In MSDE

Jan 12, 2005

I have installed 2 MSDE 2000 engines in to the PC. one is no instance name, another one's instance name is 'TEST'.

I could use a GUI MSSQL manager to connect both with local machine.

But when I tried to connect both with other machine, I found that I only could connect either one which is start in service earlier.

My case is normal?

Are they conflict by the same network port? If yes, could I change the portnumber of the MSDE??

Thanks for your support!!

Installing MSDE With A Different Instance Name

Jul 20, 2005

Hi All,

I'm trying (and have been for ages) to install a MSDE server with a
different instance name than the default.  Im setting the
instancename when using the setup.exe file and all seems to install
fine, but when I then restart my system the SQL icon appears in the
system tray but the white circle is completely empty.  It says
that it is not connected.

If i install with the default instance name then all seems to work fine.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong and what I can do to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Access MSDE Instance Remotely

I would like to be able to create an ODBC connection from my local machine (running Windows XP pro) to the MSDE database on my server but I can't get it going.

I have heard that I need to edit the registry but a Google search warns that this could be a vulnerability...

How do I do it without compromising the security of my web server?

SQL Browser Not Enumerating MSDE Instance

Apr 10, 2008

So, here is the scenario. I have a server that is running a MSDE 2000 instance (8.0.2039). Runs just fine. I install another database, this one is SQL 2005 Express (9.0.3042). Both are installed as part of application setups. Now, for various reasons, I have to uninstall the MSDE 2000 application and reinstall it. After the reinstall, the SQL Browser service no longer enumerates the MSDE instance, only the 2005 instance. As a workaround I fixed the MSDE port on the server and the clients, and it works fine. It also works fine when the application is run from the local computer without a fixed port.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

Cannot Connect To Named Instance Of MSDE Through Enterprise Mananger...

Jan 2, 2006

Hi- I am hoping someone can help me or shed some light on an issue I am having.
I have recently moved to a dedicated server with MSDE installed on it. The server was installed as the default instance and I changed the password to the SA account. I then copied my entire SA database over to the new MSDE database and everything was working good so it seemed. I believe at some point during copying of the data, or after installalling an application the SA account begain to fail and the password was changed. I have no idea how this happened, and better yet when I tried to change it logged in as the administrator with OSQL it told me I did not have sysadmin rights (I tried multiple Windows NT Auth logins and still got this error trying to change the password).
So... I reinstalled MSDE and created a named instane. I then attached the mdf/ldf files to my named instance and am able to connect ok from a .NET application directly to my new MSDE Named Instance database. Sounds like everything is great right? Not really, I can't figure out how to connect through enterprise manager and its driving me CRAZY!
1. I CAN connect via any .NET app and a connection string
2. I CAN connect via the server with OSQL
3. I CAN connect via the web based enterprise manager (which is very limited and a freeware ASP app).
4. I CANNOT connect via enterprise manager. I have verified from the (SVRNETCN.EXE utility)  that the port is open and have tried connecting to MY_IPADDRESSNAMEDINSTANCE but no luck.
One additional side note, when I wasn't using a named instance I had no problems connecting through enterprise manager to my default MSDE instance.
Any help would be grealy appriciated, this is driving me nuts!

Connection String For Default Instance Of SQL Server 2005, On A Box Also Running A Named Instance Of SQL Server 2000

Nov 15, 2007

The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
 I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However,  I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.

Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated
Thanks...

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A

Feb 17, 2004

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.

I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).

When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."

Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?

I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Reconnecting Access 2000 Front End To New Instance Of SQLServer 2000

Jul 27, 2004

I recently had to reinstall a new instance of SQLServer 2000, but was unable to use the previous server name. As a result, my Access2000 front end is not happy with it's linked tables. I can't seem to find anyplace within Access to universally change the address of the SQLServer used as the back-end for all linked tables.

When I do try to access the linked tables through Access, I get an error, and the option to change the server location. When I try to type-in the new SQLServer location, there is an attempt to reconnect to SQLServer, but a whole lot of errors are generated, and none of the data is transferred into the Access table.

I really don't want to have to re-do my Access front end, so it seems it would be easiest to somehow reinstall SQLServer to have the same server location it used to. Is there a good way to completely erase all traces of SQLServer so that I can have better luck reinstalling it to the same location it used to be in? Just using the uninstall program from SQLServer doesn't seem to be cutting it.

Thanks!

Transferring Databases From MSDE 2000 To SQL 2000

Jan 28, 2007

Trying to transfer databases from MSDE to SQL. When I use SQLEnterprise Manager - DTS - import or export, it works for the firstdatabase, but then fails for the others. I select the to and fromdatabases using DTS - Import - 'MS OLE DB Provider for SQL Server',then select 'Copy objects and data between SQL Servers'. It failswith the generic error message: 'Copy objects failed', nothingfurther. I tried to just copy data, and it doesn't work totally. Ontwo databases, it said that it copied everything, but when I go inunder Enterprise manager, some of the tables are incomplete, i.e. nodata, table shows up in the list, but if you try to look at it, itsays that it is missing or empty. Also, one table was not evencopied. In the other two cases, I get errors, does not copy alltables. I get errors, like insert fails, but the column it referencesfor the table does not even exist in that table. Any suggestionswould be appreciated.

1. Can remote locations, update data locally and send changes (say in every one hour) to central server. If yes, then how ??

2. Same way they can receive updates from Central Server on whatever was updated on Centra Server or on the 3 remote locations. If yes, then How ??

MSDE 2000 Vs MS SQL 2000 Server

Dec 18, 2003

I am about to setup an application server. This app will generate reports and instead of just having a HTML page up, I am considering running dotnetnuke type portal to offer the userbase a better interface for the reports, info, announcement, etc.

Server isn't too bad (2x1.7Ghz Xeon I think, 2GIG RAM) type of setup (may be little more or less). App doesn't require as much resources, but we are planning for the future )

While I have some resource to play with, I also need to make sure I don't load much that may impact the application performance. In my experience, SQL Server 2000 will take a lot of resources even when not used as much. So I am considering MSDE.

I am curious however, WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SQL 2000 Server Vs MSDE 2000 ?

Beside no Client tool and mostly command line specific command, what else there to convince that I should go for server vs desktop engine?

Now our company has Enterprise license for SQL, so I am not worried about the cost (well a little maybe), but mostly wondering about performance.

If you think of any reason why I go to SQL Server 2000 over MSDE, please let me. Otherwise, I think MSDE in this case is the appropriate RDBMS to go for.

Impu

SQL 2000 Replication Invalid Column Name Type

Jan 19, 2004

Hi All,

We have installed Two SQL 2000 servers.

DB1 (main database) configured as a distributor and
publishers and DB2 configured as a subscriber (backup
database). The procedures I did the replication:

1. full backup the whole database said "test" on DB1
server.
2. Create a new database "test" on DB2 server
3. restore the full backed up database to "test" database
on DB2
4. create transactional publishes (select all tables) on
DB1 and "push" the articles to DB2

The results of replication monitor for replication all
database's table:
1. sanpshot suceeded A snapshot of 100 articles was generated.
2. LogReader Idle No replication are available.
3. DB2:TEST Failed Invalid column name "TYPE"

If I only select saying 5 articles (tables) to replication
at the same database "TEST". That the result was
successful without any error.

Strange... the "TEST" database was restoring from the full
backup (latest data) of DB1. Suppose that all the tables'
column should be same. How come the error is "Invalid
column name TYPE" and number is "207"

By the way, some of "unpublished objects" including tables
couldn't be select for publishing which is default locked
by a "key with red cross". How can I release such tables
(articles) allow selecting for publishing

Any idea and help?!
