MSDE And SQL2000 On Win2k3

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all,

I have MSDE installed on an HP server as some of the utilities required
a database. I have also subsequently installed SQL 2000 onto this
server which is a windows 2003 box. I know it complains at the start
of the installation but I was under the impression that it would still
work ok, especially with SP3 applied.

I have tried to apply SP3 but it tells me that it is not a SQL2000
instance ad setup will exit?

Also I have noticed that in the directory structure it has used the
dollar sign i.e. mssql$machinename its the same in Enterprise Manager
\machinename$InstanceName. Whats that all about? Its not like that on
any other server!

My plan is to uninstall sql 2k, uninstall HP apps and MSDE and
reinstall SQL 2k. Can anyone explain the above though?

Thanks

Gary

MSDE && SQL2000

Jul 13, 2006

I am developing a Crystal Reports App in VS2005 (VB). I was originally working on an XP machine with MSDE and stored procedures where it worked fine.
I then transferred the development to a Win2003 machine with SQL2000 and am now getting the following error;
Failed to open a rowset. Description: 'Get_Calls_By_MLO_Date' expects parameter '@DT1' which was not supplied. Plus some other error detail.
Here is the SP.
CREATE PROCEDURE Get_Calls_By_MLO_By_Date @DT1 datetime, @DT2 datetimeASSELECT MLO, CallNo, DT, Type FROM ActionsWHERE dt >= @DT1 AND dt <= @DT2 AND ActionID=1 ORDER BY MLO, DTGO
If I transfer everything back to the XP machine it works fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Terry.

Migrating From Sql2000 MSDE Database To Sql2005 Express - Attach Database Errors

Apr 23, 2006

I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.

Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:

Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.

Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them. But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?

Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?

Help pls?

SQL 2000 SP4 On Win2K3 Cluster

Feb 20, 2008

Hey there I am an SQL noob, our bank has no real SQL Admin, we had onw that left but never had a good knowledge transfer. We have 2 SQL servers clustered. IBSQL1 and IBSQL2 they make up cluster IBSQL. We have 2 other servers IBIIS1 ans IBIIS2 and we noticed when installing apps on them that they could not see the database. Yet it can ping IBSQL. The problem is on IBSQL1 and 2 port 1433 is not listening or open. Thus on IBSQL it isn't either of course. I have read of all kinds of people having this issue and most have said you need to manually add a connection string "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=machineName,1433;Initial Catalog=xx;User ID=xx;Password=xx" Problem is I do not know how to add a connection string.

I need step by step instructions since im new to this. Start/programs/etc..... Apparently it is not enough to open the properties of tcp/ip in the config util and say 1433. You need to reenforce it by adding that string.

As it stands I cannot "telnet ibsql 1433" it tells me to take a hike basically.

So is the connection string the likely cause? or could it be something simpler? Thanks in advance.

Win2k3 R2 EE + SQL2k5 EE And 16GB RAM

Mar 27, 2008

For a SQL/2005 DB Server do I need the /3GB switch or not? I will have IIS running on the server; however, it won't be doing very much as the SQL Database is the main thing:

Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise w/16 GIG RAM 4 CPU (Virtual Machine)
SQL/2005 Enterprise Edition

Hardware: Dell Server 8 CPU w/32 GIG RAM running VM ESX V3

I know I need the /PAE switch to utilize Memory over 4 GB - the question is do I need the /3GB switch along with the /PAE switch?

SQL 2000 On Win2k3 Enterprise?

Aug 30, 2006

I am attempting to install MS SQL 2000 SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 box. The only installer I can find on the disc is in the MSDE directory and when I run it it immediately gives me this error:

"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

I have tried copying the install files to my local hard drive for install, I have checked the version of my Windows Installer (3.1.4000.1840). I have the SP4 updates ready to go once it's installed, but I just cannot get past that point. I know that the same software version has been installed on other Windows 2003 systems, so why would it have a problem on this one machine?

Thanks

Performance Problems With SQL2K SP4 On Win2K3 SP2

Jan 7, 2008

Hello All and Happy New Year (I believe that is still allowed by the PC police?!)

Has anyone experienced performance problems (i.e. processes taking a lot longer to connect to the database server) after appyling Windows Server 2003 SP2 to a server that was previously running Windows Server 2003 RTM? The version of SQL Server (2000 SP4) has not changed between OS Service Packs.

To set the scene, we upgraded one node of a cluster to Win2K3 SP2 intending to upgrade the other node the following night if no problems were encountered. However, after failing over to the patched node we experienced something akin to a Denial Of Service attack whereby connections were gradually refused until even existing connections were kicked out.

We resolved that issue by disabling the SynAttackProtect Registry key (details http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;899599), but although connections are no longer being refused they are taking a lot longer, e.g. opening a Query Analyzer window now takes several seconds to connect to the database. The actual time taken by the database engine to execute sql queries has not increased, but is perceived by the users as having done so because of the time taken to return results.

I asked our server team to run diagnostics against both nodes and they found no problems and no differences apart from the OS service pack level.

I am about to reopen the case I logged with Microsoft, but thought I'd see if you guys had experienced anything similar.

Thanks and regards
Lempster

SQL2K WIN2K3 CONNECTION SECURITY

Jul 23, 2005

Microsoft Security Paradigmes are Irritating. I sure they're fine onceyou know what they are, but for the uninitiated it's quitecounterintuitive to work with.I moving an old SQL Server-backend-IIS5/ASP-frontend application toservers with windows 2003 standard edition. One server will run thedatabase the other will run IIS 6.0. Note that i haven't set-up adomain, which i think requires one machine to be domain controllerwhich would decrease performance and stuff. I've simply put them on thesame group.I wan't to restrict access the sql server so only the incommingconnection from the webserver is allowed. I can use either namedpipes(which should be the fastest protocol) or tcpwhich should beslight slower than named pipes) but i seem to have a problem. If I usenamed pipes to connect the IUSR(the user under which IIS is running)must have access-rights to IPC$ share on the sql server. I can't seemto set any access-right directly for IPC$ share, but i can reactivatemy guest user and then it works, everyone can now access the ipc$ shareso it's not really what i'm looking for.I can also connect through TCP( and set up some kind of filter onlyallowing incomming connections on port 1433 from the ip of the webserver. But i don't know how to do this. I've taken a look at the IPSec stuffbut it's all about kerberos authentication and other bull which i don'tthink i need. What i need is simply a ip traffick filter, which doesnothing else but reject incomming connection from all other ip's thanmy webserver. My question is how do I do this? Do i need to have a addtitíon"firewall" service running and if so why, how much extra overhead willthis create for the server. Alternately, is it possible to change theaccess right for the IPC$ share manually? Thanks in advance for any input you might have on this?Regs Jens

Impact Of Capicom.dll In WIN2K3 OS Upgrade

May 13, 2008

Hi,

I am currently working on with the ASP encryption of my application. I've tried to test the encryption of the connection string using the capicom.dll in my local, and it works successfully. However, I am not quite sure if this will still work after my OS is upgraded to WIN2K3 (my current OS is WINXP). Will this dll component be impacted after the OS Upgrade? or will there be no impact at all?

Any inputs from you guys would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

MSDE Text Datatype - Unable To Store More Than 900 Characters. (msde + Visual Studio 2003)

Jun 6, 2005

Hello,

I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:

"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."

I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.

I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.

Thanks a lot.

ASP.NET 2.0 And SQL2000

Sep 5, 2006

Hi,I have made a web application using SQL Server 2005
Express with a few admin pages that require login. I used the SQL
Server Managment Studio Express to setup users and groups and it works
fine. But the web server has SQL Server 2000 and all I get is a
user id and password to access the database. It seems I cannot use the
Login control I put on my "login.aspx" page becuase it uses the
integrated authentication which chokes on 2000. I am afraid I wonlt be
able to use some of the 2.0 features such as profiles, ... Is
this the way 2.0 works with SQL Server 2000? Should I ditch the ISP if
they only give me a single access to database with no provisions to
create users. (I was told I had to create a "Users" table and manually
assign ids and passwords and that I can only use the user id and
password they supplied to setup the connection string in the script.)I appreciate your help.

Using Sp_ For User Sp's In SQL2000

Feb 20, 2001

Hi all,

We're beginning to migrate our 6.5 DB's to SQL2000. A question came up regarding naming conventions for stored procedures. In BOL it says that for SQL2000:

"Stored procedures with the prefix sp_ are first looked up in master. If a user-defined stored procedure has the same name as a system-supplied stored procedure residing in master, SQL Server always finds the system-supplied stored procedure. "

Behavior in 6.5 was the opposite: SQL Server searched the current database followed by a search in master.

We started several months ago renaming user stored procedures to "usp_XXX", but we still have many non-system sp's that still use "sp_". I'm looking for opinions of whether we should bite the bullet now and rename all our non-system sp's at this time; prior to moving our production environment to SQL2000. Will we see a performance gain since SQL will not have to hit master first before going to the current DB?

Any and all opinions welcome!

Thanks,

Tom Rosebrook

BCP Sql65/sql2000 Help!

Jan 9, 2002

When bcp'ing in data into an sql 6.5 table that is NOT nullable, records in the text file that contain nulls are ommited, but valid records without nulls are inserted.
However, using exactly the same table structure and files on a newly installed sql 2000 server (sp2), as soon as the first invalid record in the text file (i.e. with a null value)is encountered, bcp'ing is terminated and NO records are inserted.
I can't find any option in bcp/sql 2000 to allow me to carry out a load as before.
The help files state that the default no. of invalid records allowed is 10 (both versions sql), and explicitly setting the -m option of bcp to 10 still doesn't work.
Most of the data i receive has at least one duff record
Is there an option in sql 2000 that allows me to have x number of duff records inserted before a full rollsback occurs?

I can't find anything in technet, msdn or books online.
