Jul 23, 2005Am using SQL Server2000 on WINXP. Have been using this DB since it becameavailable. Today, all of a suddent, the Service was not 'started,' even thoI had it marked as 'automatic.' Tried to manually start the service, andreceived the message that some service start and stop if there is no workfor them to do.Don't know why this has happened. I rebotted my computer, but still can notget MSSQLSERVER 'started.' Can anyone help me here?

After nearly 1 minute it closes the windowand gives no additional information. a. logon rights
b. unchangeable passwords
c. passwords which never expire
d. NT admin rights
Questions:
a. Do I have to create a login account within SQL Server 7 itself for these accounts?
b. Must the properties for "this account' box on the general tab include the domain name?
c. If the answer to (b) is yes, then can I use ".MSSQLSERVERAGENT" in the "this account"
box on the general tab?
d. Does the SQL Server Agent function require the "BUILTINadministrators" login in order
to work?
Any help in figuring out why I can't get my SQL Server Agent to startup will be appreciated!!

SQL2005 Cluster Install Fails - Task Did Not Appear To Start On Machine
May 3, 2007On a multi node Win2003 x64 R2.
When preforming install for 2nd SQL instance. Setup fails with log entries

Note: first install worked fine - after getting over MSDTC issues...
Also have confirm task scheduler service is running on all nodes.
Anyone with some insights?

We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?

We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.
Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.
We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.
Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!

Both are controlled by a C# unit test. The initiator uses the Microsoft.Samples.SqlServer class. The target service uses stored procedure activation.
Sending a message from the initiator to the target, saves the content of the message, along with its conversation handle in the target's database specific table.
The unit test needs - at a later time - to instruct the target to send a message back on the same conversation handle to the initiator service.
For this the C# unit test creates a Conversation off of the saved conversation handle:

Conversation dialog = null;
dialog = new Conversation(client, convHandle);
Sending the message on this dialog generates an error "Message body: <Error xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error"><Code>-8495</Code><Description>The conversation has already been acknowledged by another instance of this service.</Description></Error>".
Is the error due to the fact that a service - using the activated stored procedure already picked up the conversation, so that a new reference to the service can not be created through the Service class in CLR?
If so, I might need then to skip the activated stored procedure in favor or a CLR service, alltogether?

How To Use SSMSE To Connect To Instance Service Directly (without Going Through Browser Service)?
Apr 28, 2006I have configured an instance to use static port, say 1435, and I turned off the Browser service.
I would like to know if I can use SSMSE to connect to the instance database directly. The instance is listening at port 1435 and accepting connection requests from other methods.
What I need to put into the "Server name: " field?
Normally, it would be like: <serverIP><InstanceID> with Browser turned on.
Now how do I add the port information to it, I tried
<serverIP>:<portNumber><InstanceID>
<serverIP><InstanceID>:<portNumber>
<serverIP><InstanceID> <portNumber>
None of them worked.
Any suggestions?

How Do I Start MSDE
Mar 1, 2005After installing WebMatrix on my computer, I installed Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) in my computer, but I can't see MSDE on my Start menu. I am really new to this and don't know how to open MSDE, so I could work with it. Nothing displayed after I installed MSDE, such as the typical "Installation is complete."
Sorry for such a silly question, but please help me. How can I open MSDE from the Start menu. I have windows XP Home.

How To Start Using MSDE
Apr 4, 2004I have spent megabucks buying a book called MSDE Bible and they have started the book by not telling how you create a database (with all the exact steps required so you can actually work with it. I find this highly unprofessional, and wonder if the authors David C Walls and Denise M Gosnell actually know anything about teaching. (One enormally teaches step 1 before step 2 where I come from - obviously not in some places). Anyway, later on in the book there is an example on creating a database.
My problem is that it does not work because I do not understand what is required in terms of security clearance / user names / passwords / user authority. (They also assume you know all about that too).
All I have done is installed MSDE 2000 Rel A and am now trying to use it. The only question I was asked during the install was to define a "Strong Password" and thats all.
I am now attempting to
1) Create a Database
2) Create a table with some fields
3) See if I can access the database
Now is that too much to ask ?

Help Start With MSDE??????SA Password????
Mar 22, 2005While installing the MSDE I get the folowing error:
A storng SA password is required forsecurity reasons.
Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same.
Refer to readme for more details.
Setup will now exit.

MSDE SQL Agent Won't Start

I have installed the MSDE and use mixed mode authenticaton.
The SQL Server Agent will not start due to login failures.
Normally, I would use the Enterprise Manager Managment wizard to
correct the System Account and Connection Credentials.
Can anyone tell me how to achieve this using OSQL?

Setup Failed For Error Logs And Cnfgsvr.out
Feb 22, 2001I am trying to install the SQL7 server, at the end of the installation before
rebooting the server I got the following error:
"Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and cnfgsvr.out for more information". I have not seen that error before. I cannot install the SQL7 because I always get the same message. Your help would be very appreciate helping me to solve this problem.

MSDE/SQL Server 2000 Start - Need Help

I am a VB programmer and we have a VB application that uses Access as its db (~500MB mdb file) using DAO.
We want to upgrade to MSDE/Sql Server because we have clients that will use around 5 connections to the db and others with no more then 20 users.
I was asked to build a simple test program in Vb under MSDE that will
enable us to test few clients working simultaneously (I have few days for that).
There is so much material on MSDE and we just ordered an MSDE Developer
guide book from the Amazon that will arrive in a few days.
The amount of material is confusing like hell and I didn't work with ADO
before, I don't even know if to work with Access 2000 or with a different db, can you advice ?
Do you know of a good sample that show a beginner like me how to access
MSDE from VB using ADO?
If you do please please advice it will ease the pressure and the days are
numbered.

Oct 29, 2007the service is already automatic, but when starting Windows XP MSDE "asks" to be installed correctly, run setup again and as you can imagine i did so. I can't find the answer

Apr 8, 2001I'm trying to set up SQL 7 for replication, so I set SQLAgent to start automatically, same as SQL Server itself. SQL Server starts fine, but SQL Agent "fails to connect in a reasonable time" according to the Event log (3000 milliseconds).
Can you suggest how I go about fixing this? They both are using valid logins, so I don't know what else could be wrong.
Advice appreciated!

SQL Mail Fails To Start

My SQL Mail fails to Start. I am using Outlook Express as my mail client. I am not sure why it does not work in one of the servers when it works fine in another SQL Server. Any ideas. Help Appreciated.

SQLExecutive Fails To Start
Oct 18, 2005Hi guys, 1st post hope you can help,
we have a cluster running SQL 6.5, for the last couple of days the SQL Executive fails to start, the event log contains Events 7009 followed by Event 7000 which is "The service did not repond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"
When i tru to start it through Cluster ADministrator, i get an online pending message then failed.
The SQL log contains no entries but the Cluster log mentions "Resutilsstartresourceservice failed" Status 41d"
Ive looked long and hard but cant find anything, has anyone come accross this ? has anyone any ideas ? please help if you can
