MSDE Or SQL 2005 Deployment Resources - Real World Input

Feb 9, 2006

I have traditionally done web app and client server programming and am have been playing around with a new tool (Win forms) app that I eventually want to distribute to other developers and a couple of business people in our organization. I have done apps in the past that all connect to a central server for data access. The I'm working on now will have an individual DB per user and should be available locally for a desktop version of the software.

I am looking for more resources on things to consider when deploying an app with either MSDE or SQL 2005 Express. More specifically, items like long term maintenance of the db once it's installed with the user, etc. (DB bloat, transaction files, auto maintenance routines I may want to build in, etc)

I have seen all of the msdn docs on what you need to deploy (and how to do it), but I'm looking fro input from people that have deployed it and any significant pitfalls they have run into with that sort of deployment.

Any links or book references would be appreciated, thank you,

Real World: Backup Strategy And Implementation, How?

Jan 24, 2007

Real World: Backup Strategy and implementation, how?
A quote:

€œReal World:

Whether you back up to tape or disk drive, you should use the tape rotation technique. Create multiple sets, and then write to these sets on a rotating basis. With a disk drive, for example, you could create these back files on different network drives and use them as follows:

//servername/data1drive/backups/AWorks_Set1.bak. Used in week 1, 3, 5 and so on for full and differential backups.
//servername/data2drive/backups/AWorks_Set2.bak. Used in week 2, 4, 6 and so on for full and differential backups.
//servername/data3drive/backups/AWorks_Set3.bak. Used in the first week of the month for full and differential backups.
//servername/data4drive/backups/AWorks_Set4.bak. Used in the first week of the quarter for full and differential backups.

Do not forget that each time you start a new rotation on a tape set, you should overwrite the existing media. For example, you would append all backups in week 1. Then, when starting the next rotation in week 3, you would overwrite the existing media for the first backup and then append the remaining backups for the week.€?

I understand these concepts, however in €˜the real world€™ how do you go about implementing these jobs in SQL2K and how on earth do you schedule the tasks to overwrite, for example, week 1, when on week 3€™s rotation.

Could I have real world examples or scripts for the jobs that would carry out this task? It appears that whatever course you do, it does not fully cover the above, and I have only worked on my own and never with a DBA, so I have never seen this implemented in any environment.

I would like full details on this please, as I need to get my head around it.

Thanks

Neil

MSDE For Testing, SQL Server For Deployment...?

Jan 9, 2004

I'm going to be starting a web application this week. I have quite a bit of experience with Access Databases, and I've also used MySQL (back in my PHP days, thank GOD for ASP.NET).
The server we use to host our websites allows us to use SQL Server databases, so I want to move in that direction, but I'm not really sure where to start.
If I download MSDE, and start a database with it on a site I will be developing locally (on my XP box), will it be difficult for me to transfer the database (or layout of the database) to a production server running SQL Server. I know they're basically the same database, but I'm just afraid to start with an MSDE database and then get the site nearly complete, and then not know how to transfer it to a SQL Server DB.

I'm particularly interested to know if the majority of the database creation will be done through queries (similar to MySQL) because I figure if it is, then I can use the same queries to create the database on both the local and production server.

I just want to make sure that downloading MSDE will be a step in the right direction.

Perhaps links or tutorials or some information on things to watch out for as I take on this process would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

MSDE Included As Part Of ASP.NET Deployment Package?

Nov 17, 2003

I need to design an asp.net application w/ and MSDE backend database that will be deployed at 50 different location (unrelated to each other). The application's deployment package needs to be downloaded from a web site on the internet. The end user locations do not have SQL2000 or MSDE...some have access.

I want to know if my deployment package can include the MSDE software? Or, can anyone offer ideas on the EASIEST way for these small offices to get MSDE installed on each of their servers so that my ASP.NET applications will connect to via ado.net.

Thanks for any ideas.

SQL 2005 Express Resources

Jun 9, 2007

Will I am running SQL 2005 Express on windows 2003 sp1 with a P4 3.4Gh (with hyperthreading), 2GB ECC RAM.
I am running software that connects to SQL and reads/saves data.
One of the programs which is CPU hungry manages data and the other manages the SQL connection and reads/saves the data.

My problem is that I am recieving an error that usually means connection to SQL is lost, this tends to be because the CPU hungry application is denying SQL from functioning.

However the annoying thing is the CPU use rarely passes 45% and in a another test environment never passed 5%. RAM is the same, consumption is less than 35%.

Please advise
Thanks a lot!

SQL 2005 Cluster Behavior - Re Authenticate After Moving Resources...

Oct 30, 2007

On a SQL 2005 Cluster, when you move the SQL resources you generally have to kind of "reauthenticate". For example, in SSMS and after you have moved the SQL cluster resources, you run a query in SSMS and you get a connection failure. Run it again and it works.
Does anyone else notice this? I am assuming it is because the resources are now on a differen't server. But then what's the purpose of the SQL virtual server name and instance? I thought when you authenticate to SQL it's to the virtual SQL server like so... VirtualServerSQLInstance.
Can someone straighten out my poor mangled mind?
I'd like to avoid this reauthentication thing.

Thanks

SQL Server 2005 REAL Annoying Problem

Jan 22, 2008

I am having a problem connecting to my SQL Server 2005 database at the same time with SQL Management Studio Express and from the website at the same time.
Everytime I want to view any pages in my site that access the database, I have to close management studio and restart the server for some reason or i get a failed login error message.
Is it NOT possible to work on the database at the same time as viewing pages in the website that access the database?
This freaking error is realy starting to bug me.
I sure hope that there is a work around or something for this.

Real Simple Liscensing Question For Sql Server 2005.

Apr 11, 2006

Hell, I host web pages on a server(s) that I own, located in a datacenter.I am trying to figure out how to properly liscnese sql server 2005.I have called microsoft, and the people i talk to dont seem to understand my situation.  They keep asking me about the number of employess i have, which is totally irrelevant.  Let me give you a basic example.Example 1.My personal web page has a blog on it.  The blog data is stored in a SQL database.  Its a popular blog, thousands of anonymous people reading my blog every month via my webpage.  The only "thing" accessing the SQL databse is an asp.net script i write, which then turns around and presents the data via html over the www.  just like every other blog in the universe. Example 2.I sell artwork over the internet via my web page.   My web page uses a shopping cart system which makes use of an SQL database to keep track of inventory and orders etc.  No one ever tries to connect to my database, they just use the shopping cart on my web page which of course connects to the database. Now according to the MS liscensing documentation it seems that i can buy sql server w/ 5 device CAL's.  Since I only have 1 or 2 webservers accessing the database server, that should be no problem right? So my basic question is this:   is a single Device CAL enough to allow one webserver to connect to one sql server and then show dynamic content to thousands of anonymous users (whoever happens to visit my sites?).Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

Real Problem Installing SQL Server Express 2005

Oct 7, 2006

When I first installed MS SQL Server 2005 Express Editon, I didn't I selected Windows Auth instead of mixed mode, so I uninstalled sql server and then attempted to reinstall. On the earlier installtion I did setup to instances which show in the "Control Panel/admin tool/services". Anyway, I used the unistall through the control panel, but on installing again it told me that I had instances aready running and needed to stop them. Couldn't work out how to do that. So after many different things, including using the MS's removal tool and windows installer clean up, I still failed. Now however I get the following error message:

Setup failed because Service MSSQL$SQLExpress is disabled for the current hardware profile. Services must be set with the current Hardware Profile logon property profile enabled. For more information on how to enable the hardware profile logon property refer to the product documentation.

Can someone help?

Unresolved SQL Server 2005 Issues - Getting Real Fedup With It!

Nov 22, 2007

So for the last week of my life, literally, I have been trying to import excel files, text files, etc through the bcp utility, link server and also trying bulk insert....I am really, really tired of this not working and I am starting to think there is a bug in express. I first thought these issues might have to do with Vista but I have even tried and failed with XP SP2. I am not new to SQL Server, nor am I a new developer - I have over five years experience so I am really pissed about it at this point! I know most professional developers use SQL Server 2005 Enterprise or something other than Express which is why I am probably not getting answers. btw, this is not the first time I have posted about these issues either. I have referenced multiple sources including forums, books on-line and I even resorted to getting a SQL Server 2005 EXPRESS book for dummies! I have enabled remote connections for both named pipes and tcp/ip. I have started the sql browser service. I have given the correct permissions to the file I want to import and to the table I want to import the data to. The file contains the int values 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 --> I have even tried saving this file as a .csv -- thanks a whole bunch sql server 2005 dev team for getting rid of the import/export wizard found in 2000, arrrrrgh!

BULK INSERT TestDB.dbo.tblTestData
FROM 'C:datamyData.txt' WITH (DATAFILETYPE = 'char', FIELDTERMINATOR =',');
GO

Msg 4864, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk load data conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage) for row 1, column 1 (columnValue).

Can ANYONE give me a real answer on h ow I can get this to actually work?

Below is the brief of my setup
1.I have two Active directory domain controllers running Windows 2003 R2 Standard edition with SP2.
2.i have installed a Windows 2003 Two Node Active Passive Cluster as NODE1 and NODE2.
3.The Domain account used to install WIndows 2003 A/P Cluster is Clusteradmin. This account is the member of Administartors on the Domain as well as the Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.

5.SLQ 2005 has four domain groups for 4 SQL Services. The Services are SQL Server,SQL Server Agent,SLQ Anaylisis Server and Full text Search.
6.Each of these servcie has a seperate service account created for them. All these service accounts areb the members of domain admin and the member of Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
7.Each of these servcies is running under these servcie accounts in the Servcies tab in NODE1 and NODE2.
8.If i fail the resources from NODE1 to NODE2 ,The SQL Server,SQL Server Agent and SQL Anaylisis resources are failing.on going to the service tab of NODE 2 I reset the password for these services, the services come online.
10.The Cluster resources and MSDTC Resources are Failing over successfully. They are coming online successfully.

How To Configure An Enterprise Deployment Of SQL 2005

Jul 26, 2006

I€™m interested in reading about best practices or
recommended deployments for MS SQL 2005.
Currently our company owns 8 x SQL 2005 Enterprise Processor licenses. We have 4 HP DL380€™s with the following
configurations:

6GB RAM

Mirrored
72GB drives for OS (Windows 2003 Ent R2)

4TB Shared
storage (SAN) (15K Fiber Channel)

Dual 3.6GHz
Processors

We would like to create a highly available data
warehouse. We considered running the
SQL engine on one set of servers (Cluster 1) and running the reporting, analysis,
browser, etc., services on the other set of servers (Cluster 2).

Is this possible with MS SQL 2005?

How do we install and link all the servers together?

Is this a poor design?

With the above hardware and software, what would be the best
deployment for availability, distributed processing, speed, and reliability and scalability?

Thank you.

32-bit To 64 Bit Migration Of SQL Server 2005 (Deployment)

Jul 31, 2006

Hi

Do we need to perform any special checks when we deploy SQL Server application developed using 32 bit SQL 2005 Edition in 64 bit SQL 2005 Edition?

To my understanding, 64 bit SQL Server 2005 provides better memory management and provides high performance when compared to 32 bit and it should not be an issue in deploying the application developed in 32 bit SQL Server 2005 in 64 bit environment.

Any help/hints on deploying in 64 bit SQL Server (for a product[SPs, TSQL Stmts] developed using 32 bit SQL Server) is appreciated.

SQL 2005 Express Deployment Problem

Feb 15, 2007

Hi, how are you!

I'm a beginner of database. I have some really "novice" questions here.

Currently I'm trying to upload my database to a share windows host server. I have problems uploading my database files.

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL 2005 express version. I was told that in order to upload my database, I need to have.bak file of my database.

The problems are:

1. under my visual studio server explorer, it seems I have two databases, one is ASPNETDB.MDF, another one is (mycomputername)sqlexpress.(databasename).dbo. I dont know from which one I can create the .bak file, and how?

2. I can not find where the phsyical location of my files (such as tables or stored procedures) from my (mycomputername)sqlexpress.(databasename).dbo database.

Anyone can help? thank you!

Hello World: SQL Server + ASP.NET

Mar 15, 2006

Hi everybody,
This is propably very silly question...
I've used SQL Server for sometime now, but always through tools supplied by my hosts (my Little Admin, SQL Server Web Admin).
I always wanted to try running the real thing, so I've installed SQL Server 2K developer edition on my machine. I also have IIS and .NET framework running.
What would be the next step to see those 3 components in action? I have noticed Northwind database in the Enterprise Manager. How do I make the connection?
I have the SQL Server Service Manager running fine, but when I open Query Analyzer it comes up with the window "Connect to SQL Server" and this little dropdown, where you can choose the server is actually empty. What do I do?
Thank you all for your pointers.

Problem With SQL Server Express 2005 Deployment

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'.Cannot attach the file 'C:path' as database 'dbname'.

MS SQL 2005 CE Deployment File Sharing Issue?

Nov 15, 2007

Hello,

I was hoping that someone may be able to help me with an issue that I am having while trying to deploy my projects using MSI. Here is what I am trying to do.

I have two programs that are using MS SQL CE to share information. The first program is a windows service. The second program is a windows application that I am using mainly as a UI for the service. Each program has a seperate MSI setup program. I am using windows vista and VS 2005 on my developement machine.

The issue that I am having is when I deploy the programs. The windows service is working fine. It reads and writes to the database as expected. I know this because when I debug the UI program through VS 2005, I can read and write from the common SQL CE database with no issues. I am also pretty confident in the MSI program for the UI program because if I install the UI program on the developement computer and run the UI program as administrator it runs fine.

The issue arises when I simply open the UI program or when I try to run the UI program on a windows xp sp2 machine. I am no longer able to access the database file. I have tried many diffent things, but so far with no luck. Most of the attempts to fix this so far have been concerning the location of the database file these have had little or no effect. Again if I open the UI program using the right click option of 'Run as Administrator' in windows vista, the problem disappears.

Thanks in advance for any help. Even a push in the right direction would be helpful at this point. I will keep working on this issue, if I find a solution myself I will repost it here.
