MSSQL DTS Newbie - Data Transfer Between Two DBs
May 15, 2006
I am just starting out with MSSQL, but have previous experience with MySQL and PGSQL. What I'm trying to do is do a nightly dump of data from a proprietary DB into MSSQL. Access to the prop DB is through an ODBC driver.
I already have a DTS script that will dump a specific table, but every time it runs it just appends the data to the end of the table.
What I am looking for is a way to download a list of tables, upload them into the MSSQL DB, and if something failed, rollback to the state before the data transfer and somehow alert of the fact.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the replies,
As per the querys:
------------------------
1) I am trying to use the Database of my host (hosting server of datapacket). They have a support for MS-SQL-2000. Therefore surely the server is there. After my CPanel configuration i got the Database Server IP (67.122.X.X), Port - 1433, SQL Server user and pasword.
2) In my local machine SQL Server 2000 is installed. Where the databse and DNS is configured.
Now, from this local machine how can i transfer the data to the host machine (remote SQL Server).
Simpliy copying Files *.MDG and *.LDf files it is not working. And i don't have access to the remote SQL-SERVER as it is in the host machine of datapacket. I can only configure it throuch there Control Panel and throuch FTP can copy the required files in there machine. I have a user in that remote MS-Sql server that all i have.
As per my understanding after the control panel configuration the database and the DNS is created in the remote Sql-Server of datapacket. Now all i have to do is transfer the data & tables. HOW TO DO THAT?????
I have tried using Export but it fails to connet the remote database.
Thanks in Advance

Hi,
I'm new to Integration Services and I have a problem when I try to make a simple transfer of tables and views between 2 DB.
The idea is to copy tables and views from DB1 to DB2.
If the object exists in the target DB, it must be dropped, then created and the data must be copied.
The problem occurs when a new object is created in the source DB and thus does not exist in the target DB. This throws an error because the system cannot drop an object wich does not exist.
What is the workaround ?
The idea is to execute this package every hour to have a cached DB. In this case, replication is not a solution.
Thanks in advance,
Patrice.

I have been working with a MySql 2005 database and a MySql database. I am using a MySql database in my C# application, and the MySql database is on-line. My application is generating queries and with those pieces of information I am updating the on-line data base.
It is working for €śtext€? information but I need to add some images, too. I see two possibilities:
1. I can either use an binary or image field in my MySql database and send this information on-line (but I don€™t know if the fields are compatible MsSql - MySql)
2. Or I can produce a folder with the images and upload that folder, in this case I have the path information in my databases.
Can you give me other possible suggestions about how to solve this problem?

Is it possible/advisable when transfering very large amounts of data from server to server to:
trasnfer the data to a new table first
second alter new table adding indexes, defaults, ets based on original table
if it is what flow item would be used to transfer/alter the indexes and defaults?
I'm very new to ssis so the more detail you can give the better.
Thanks

In the full recovery model, if i run a transaction that inserts 10MB of data into a table, then 10 MB of data is moved in the data file. Does this mean then that the log file will grow by exactly 10MB as well?
I understand that all transactions are logged to the log file to enable rollback and point in time recovery, but what is actually physically stored in the log file for this transactions record? Is it the text of the command from the transaction or the actual physical data from that transaction?
I ask because say if I have two drives, one with 5MB/s write speed for the log file and one with 10MB/s write speed for the data file, if I start trying to insert 10 MB of data per second into the table, am I going to be limited to 5MB/s by the log file drive, or is SQL server not going to try and log all 10 MB each second to the log file?

Hello All,
I am migrating data from one database to another. I am using Multicast to seperate (legal street, legal mail and legal city) and (mail_street,mail_state,mail_zip,mail_city) also later after UNION of the above I am doing two lookups as I had to get contact ID and Customer ID from other two tables. In UNION i am matching (Mail street legal street) and so on.
I am getting double the data in the output. my input data is 1000000 and im gettin 2000000.
What could be the reasons. Please help me out.

My vendor requires data to be sent in Excel format. Some of my tables have rows over 65,536 so I need to use Excel 2007 (Max of 1,048,576). Right now my data sits in SQL 2000. I am using MS SQL Enterprise Manager 8.0 to prepare the data. Is there some kind of add on or selection I am missing to use DTS to export from SQL to Excel 2007?Thanks in advance.

I have created a SSIS package that transfer data from a Foxpro database to an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. I used the wizard to create the package but I load and execute the package within a custom application that I have written in C#.
The way the custom application is intended to work is that the user can have the database in any location on the computer and all he has to do is specify the location then the application programatically changes the location of the source on the package that it has loaded and then execute it. When I initially run the package the first time (using the original path), it works fine and transfers the data. However, every subsequent time I run the application and specify a different path, the database on the SQL Server side gets created as expected but the data is not transfered!
Where am I going wrong? Do I need to save the package after I modify the source then reload and run it again or do i need to change something else in the Data Flow to make this work?

Hi everyone... sorry, but I'm really new at this! I'm trying to make a table out of an imported Excel file (which is automatically generated as an all-text data type). I wrote a query that takes this excel file and puts it into the format we need (i.e., appropriate column headers, removing "garbage" characters and spaces). Is there any way to format the data going into the table by a specified datatype?
Sorry if this is simplistic or wasting your time, but I'm really stumped :o. However, keep in mind that I started learning SQL this morning and I've already gotten this far :).

Hi,
I have a SSIS project where I am transferring data from DB2 table to SQL Server table. There is a column called REC_ID which I need to encrypt before we store it in SQL Server. Now, SQL Server has buildin encryption functionality and we need to use that as there are views that will decrypt this column and give data to authenticated users.
So, the question is, is there anyway that I can encrypt the column data in my SSIS package using my target SQL server database key and using SQL server encryptbykey function while transferring?
Thanks,
Ujjaval

Hello everyone, I am new to mssql so please excuse all my silly questions.
I can create databases and tables. This is fairly easy, now I am having trouble with inputting data into the database using the data entry browser (or whatever it is called to enter data directly into a table).
I usually get an error when trying to submit the entry, firstly I have a "id" field which I think I have set to auto increase (Identity is ticked, seed and increment is set to 1).
when I go to add data all fields have "Null" in them and from what I understand it allows the fields to be empty, except the primary key which is the id field in this case and I expect that to be filled in automatically like with mysql but isn’t.
Can some kind person instruct or direct me somewhere on how to enter data into a table without it failing.
Thanks in advanced for any information provided.

Hi. I just set up my first sql server database and I've managed to connect to it via ASP as a test.
I'm not sure how to add data to my tables. In MS Access, you can edit the table and add records. How do I do that in SQL Server?
I'm using the Enterprise manager tool to create tables.... does it have something i can use?
Thanks

It was suggested to me to try and post this here in the sql express forum.
I am trying to query a specific field from my sse database based on two different variables. And use this information to fill a textbox with an integer.
The first variable is a combobox that is filled with data in one of the other tables in the sse database. This table has a PKcolumn that is an integer and the identity of the column. The only other column is a nvarchar(30) string (which is the actual data in the combobox)
The second variable is a numeric up down that isn't actualy using info from the database but will be a reference. It has a max value written in to the code:
if NumericUpDown1.Value > 20 Then
MessageBox.Show("This form only supports characters up to level 20")
NumericUpDown1.Value = 20
The texbox value will be found in a table that has several columns, the first column is an identity column (also the PK) then it has a column that holds an integer value (the filter criteria for the numeric up down) the next column has the value that will fill the text box, then several other columns that are irrelevant for this, and then the final column is a foreign key that is linked to the primary key of information found in the table that feeds the combo box.
I will post a picture of the database diagram to show all of this information for a better understanding of this post.
I am not looking for someone to write the code for me, but I am totally stumped as to what I need to do, If someone can help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it, thanks in advanced.

Hi,
I am able to do these actions interactively from SQL 2005 (not developers nor enterprise edition, just using SQL 2005 Mgmt Studio) and want to "script/batch" them so I can have them automatically run at a pre selected time.
First: I am able to delete the table by performing a right click on the table, then click Delete from Mgmt Studio SQL 2005. I verify the table is completely gone with a refresh. (I pulled the code that did this ..... DROP TABLE etc. to Notepad)
2nd: I am able to import the table (again from Mgmt Studio SQL 2005) and have saved this action as a SSIS. Execute the script and "waLa" I have all 17K rows of data. I pulled this create table code into notepad also.
Now I put the code of both of the above actions together (drop table and create table) into one SQL query and execute it. This does not give me the same results of above, instead my table is blank now.
Maybe there is a better way. The business problem I am attempting to solve: I am refreshing the data in a as/400 table weekly. I want that refreshed data to be available in the SQL2005 database without my having to press buttons first thing Monday morning. Can any one help? Thanks in advance.

Hi there. i have the following excel spreadsheet that needs to be moved into a database:
ADDRESS
STREET
SURNAME
GIVEN
PHONE
CITY
POSTAL
NOTES
TERR
40
Goodless Crt
You
M
(416) 123-1234
SC
M1B 1A1
SC-123-12
59
Bellevue Ave
Doe
Jon
(416) 123-1234
SC
M1B 1A3
SC-123-13
Most of these fields are going to be created as reference tables... and the main contact list table will only include a fk to the actual value.
eg) the contact table for the above will look like:
ADDRESS
STREET
SURNAME
GIVEN
PHONE
CITY
POSTAL
NOTES
TERR
40
1
You
M
(416) 123-1234
1
M1B 1A1
5
59
2
Doe
Jon
(416) 123-1234
1
M1B 1A3
6
My question is, what is the best way to move all this data into SQL Server Express?
I've been playing around with the LinkedServers section in sql and have managed to create a connection to my excel workbook. I am able to select all worksheets as tables... and i've also been able to select all records from the main contacts sheet.
not knowing any better, my initial thoughts are to create separate sql statements for each reference table.
eg) select street from excellink...contact$
and then combine it somehow with an insert statement into the streets table in my database.
Is this the right approach? if it is, can you help with the syntax of the sql statement?
Please and thanks.

Hi everyone,I need some help transfering my database(SQL2005) to the host's server. In SQL 2000 I had the Management tools > DTS or ImportExport tools.SQL2005 lacks this, all I've got is Express Manager > can't connect to multiple databases. Can connect to one database and has a screen to excute TSQL commands.I don't want to have to recreate the whole database on the server.....This would be crazy... 150 stored procedures and 30 tables. Not to mention all the individual settings for each column.I know there is SQL Studio Management tools for the full version of SQL 2005. SQL v7.0 - DTS
Tying to transfer all object info, sp's, constraints and data in to a fresh new database in the same instance, but it's hit and miss when it comes to getting everything transferred. Followed step by step instructions (GUI/Scripts) and sometimes the table structure will transfer without PK's, as well as some data and if you're lucky, some constraints. Stored proc's have a tendency to show up 20 minutes later. I'm testing this on a machine with IE 5, SP2 and fresh new Dll's (just in case something was corrupted). Is there a priority as far as what to transfer first? For example, tables only 1st, then constraints on down to records parent to child? I am assumming you should be able to transfer all at the same time since it's built in to the utility. Or, does it come down to something in the schema? If anyone out there has experienced something similar and found a solution, please advise.

Does this seem like a good idea - any suggestions for a better way to share the data? Thanks

I have a table in a database that has just over 1 million records, eachrecord about 50-60 characters. I need to transfer this data to anotherdatabase. I implemented two options:1) Read the data record by record and insert into the destinationdatabase, using ODBC. I played with different commit intervals, up to100,000. This version takes about 12 minutes. Having indexes on thedestination table or removing them made little difference.2) Dump the data into a flat file, and use bulk copy to read the fileinto the destination table. This takes less than a minute. Are these results within the normal ranges? I am particularlyinterested in a way to improve upon the first method.
