MSSQL Log File Is 210GB And Growing
Oct 11, 2007
Hello, we are running Microsoft SQL 2005 Express edition (9.0.32).
Recently I just noticed that the database log file of our main database is HUGE. The database data file is only 50MB and the log file is 210GB.
Any idea what is causing this? Seems to be getting bigger with time, in the last 7 days seems to have grown by 100GB. I noticed the following settings under the database:
Autogrowth: By 15 percent, unrestricted growth
Does that seem right? Thanks.

I am running Microsoft SQL 2005 Express.
The transaction log of the main database has gotten huge and I just noticed it because the disk is nearly out of free disk space.
The database data file is 46MB and the transaction log is 210GB. This happended because autogrowth was on, and no limit was set I suppose.
So my goal is to knock this thing down to size, and set the max size of the transaction file to like 5GB.
I CANNOT do a backup of the transaction log because I do not have enough free space for such an operation. I tried doing:
DUMP TRANSACTION dbName
No luck, got the following error: Backup or restore requires at least one backup device.
Can I just stop the service and manually DELETE the transaction log file?
Thanks for the help.

The TEMPDB transaction log file keeps growing. The database server is new and the transaction log was presized to 1 GB on installation. After installing a number of databases, the log file grew over a day to 38GB. Issuing a manual checkpoint was the only way to free some space to allow it to be shrunk back to a usable size. The usage of the file is still going up.
I am struggling to find what process is causing the log to be used so heavily. Looking at the log reuse wait desc for tempdb returns "Nothing" and tempdb itself isn't being used very much or growing in size.

Why does a log (.ldf) file keep growing and growing and growing? Is this related to the fact that the scheduled Maintenance keeps failing due to exclusive access problems?

My log file was 2x the size of my actual Database which is obviously too large on a DEV box. I know that my data can be easily recovered so I actually do not even want/need a log file.
After doing some investigation I found that I should turn my database into "Simple Recovery Mode" and after this I used a few scripts to truncate my log file. Things at this point looked great!
Unfortunately my log File is still growing even with this 'simple recovery mode'. So how do I stop this craziness from occurring?
I even unchecked the box 'allow autogrowth' on the database! However, I eventually get errors when creating records in the system because it complains about running out of room in the log file.
Code:
The transaction log for database 'ReportingDB' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases

Hello,
I have got another annoying problem. The MDF file size on one of the machines is growing really fast. We zip the mdf/ldf files every day from all the machines in the dataentry dept. On this particular machine, the mdf file size is growing by about 1GB per day. However, when the file is zipped, the zipped file size comes closer to the zipped files from the other machines.
I have tried doing this:
http://www.sql-server-performance.com/lost_data_sql_server.asp
on it as well, but didn't solve my problem.
Any ideas as to what it might be? and how to solve this problem?
Thanks in Advance.

I'm having a problem. When I use the SQL query to make a backup of the database, it worked fine. But everytime I use it, the backed-up file's size kept growing in size. Say I have the file, test.bak whose filesize is 450 MB then I run a new backup to overwrite the existing test.bak file, it just end up as 900 MB. If I run it again, it become 1350 MB and so on.
Is there a way to prevent that from happening?

I upgraded from SQL 6.5 to SQL 7 last month, and so far, everything's
been going fine.
However, I'm not using my old SQL 6.5 backup scripts, which, when the
backup was done, would dump the transaction log with TRUNCATE_ONLY, shrinking
the log size.
My SQL 7 server is set up with a Maintenance Plan which does everything,
including backup, but the log file seems to be growing and growing. I'm
up to 4.5 gigs now, for a database with a data file of 3.5 gigs.
How do I "dump transaction with TRUNCATE_ONLY" on a SQL 7 database?
Thanks,
Todd Wallace

I have merge replication setup up for 6 SQLCE Subscribers.
I have noticed that the MSmerge_tombstone table is growing
at a fast rate regardless of any changes to the data in
the database. It seems to be consistantly adding 50 rows
of data to the table every 2 minutes. As the table grows
it causes the SQLCE subscirbers to fail with the following
message:
ERROR: -2147467259
SQL Server Reconciler failed: Run
ERROR: -2147200925
: Failed to enumerate changes in the filtered
articles.
ERROR: 0
: {call sp_MSsetupbelongs
(?,?,?,?,?,0,?,?,1,?,?,?,?,?,?)}
ERROR: 0
: The merge process timed out while executing a
query. Reconfigure the QueryTimeout parameter and retry
the operation.
I'm sure that this is due to the size of the
MSmerge_tombstone.
Should the MSmerge_tombstone table grow at this rate?
36,000 rows every 24hrs!
I understand there is the sp_mergecleanupmetadata Stored
procedure but if i use this does that mean that because i
have to reinitialise all the subscribers, they are going
to have to pull down the whole subscription again.
I have since Changed a settings to make subscription
expiration date to 8 days instead of never expires but
we're still getting 50 rows added every 2 minutes
SQL SERVER 2000 SP3
Hope someone can shed some light on this for me.
Thanks.

Hello, I am using Visual Studio Web Developer 2005 Express Edition with MSSQL 2005. I need to import my db into the db in Godaddy.com web server. How do you know export MSSQL db in VSWD to csv file? I was trying Teratrax. But I am not sure how to browse for the database on my local machine. My local machine runs on XP Home Edition and I write my ASP.NET app with Visual Studio Web Developer Express Edition. How do I find out what my server name is so that I can connect to the database of my application? I don't think it is localhost because I don't have IIS running on my machine. From my understand VSWD has its own web server. But I am not sure how to connect to my data baswe so that I can export the database to CSV file using Teratrax.ThanksJacthemanus

Hi there,
I wanted to know if there is a possiblity of running a scheduled VBScript file under MSSQL 7.0 using the - Management->Sql Server Agent->Jobs.
When I create a Step, there are these given options:
1. Active Script:
I understand that the configuration would allow VBScript or Java Script or Others.... but the command could only be as long as 3200 characters. My script is longer than the mentioned limit hence I will have to use an external .vbs file.
I don't know how the third option of others to be used.
2.Operating System Command(CmdExec):
I can only use .BAT, .CMD, .EXE, .COM extentions in this. Again, I would have to convert my .VBS file to a .EXE and then schedule it. It has a lot of overheads to it, which I consider is not apt.
Could anyone suggest me how to go about scheduling a .vbs file on MSSQL 7.0 with set frequency.
Regards,
Raj

Here's my question, hopefully one of you can help me:
When you allow your log file to grow on its own, eventually it uses up all your diskspace . . so you truncate it. However, when you truncate it, it doesn't *resize* the log file, so your still out of disk space, it simply clears up room within the allocated "block" or what-not so that the db can continue to make log file entries.
So, does anyone know of a way to resize that log file without losing it's data? For example, we were thinking about truncating it, backing it up, dropping the original, and then restore the log file from the "truncated backup." Anyways, there must be an easier solution (if that one even works!) . . so please, if you have any hints, let me know.
Thanks,
David P.

Hi All,
I had a problem today where BCP would not read the format file I created giving the following error:
I/O error while reading BCP format file.
I searched the archives here at swynk.com and found a thread titled exactly the same as the one I am now creating. There were numerous responses to this thread but none of them seemed to solve the problem for me (short of the one that suggested using BCP to create the format file, which I didn't want to do).
I used BCP to create a format file for me (which looked identical to the format file that I created) and it worked fine. With my suspicions aroused, I used a binary file viewer to look at the contents of each file and highlight the differences. Apart from the usual variations in whitespace I noticed that the my file did not have any carriage returnline feed at the end of the last row definition.
My format file ended at the end of the last row definition line. It did not have any carriage returns and line feeds. I matched the one generated by BCP and added the following "
" to the end of the file, tested my format file and it worked perfectly.
The moral of the story is, make sure when you create a format file, you have an empty line at the end of the file (ie: after your last "Server Column Name", make sure you have "
" sans quotes).
Hope this saves someone a few hours :-)
Cheers,
Dan.

i am sure other company data is getting bigger as well and it has been longer time than ours. How to deal with it ?
