MSSQL Questions

Mar 4, 2006

1) I haven't seen any use of "SAVE TRANSACTION" in small to mid size apps. Is it used mainly in big and complex apps?

2) Given this link http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3584751 about SQL2005. How can what the article presents be done in SQL2000?

Thanks.

MSSQL Replication Questions

Feb 16, 2007

Hello, I am playing around with the replication feature within mssql.

The system that I am developing requires a master database at a remote location, possibly at a data centre and have a onsite database. The idea of having a local database is that the system can be running in the event of no internet connection and all the local databases update the master server and the master server updating all the local databases so they all have the same data.

I have some questions.

1. I create a publication on the master server and setup a subscription on a local database; does information only go 1 way? Or do I need to setup a publication on the local database and setup a subscription on the master server for data to go both ways?

2. What is the best type of replication for information on all databases to be up-to-date with each other, Merge?

3. Is there any limitations with the replication feature that I need to be aware of?

4. Is there anything that I need to keep in mind when I set this up?

5. How much bandwidth does replication take up, I know there are a lot of factors involved when trying to calculate this type of thing but a good idea would be good.

Thank you for all your replies.

*edit* I am testing with 2 copies of mssql enterprise trial

Several Newbee Questions About MSSQL Backups

Mar 12, 2008

hi all,

i have some questions about backing up mssql database, please, if you can help me with them.

1. what is main difference between Full Recovery and Bulk_Logged Recovery models? when to use one, and when to use the other?

2. why do i need marks in my backup? can you tell me in which case do i need marks? i don't understand, why wolud i ever wanted to recover database to some marked point? in which case i would like to recover only it's part and not full database?

3. if i do have backup of transaction log, it means nothing if i do not have backup of database structure? i need to have complete backup of transaction log to be able to recover all of the data?

4. i have database, and i did make no changes in database structure. in that case, only one backup of the system tables of the database is enough? there is no need to backup it all the time?

5. when i backup my transaction log file, do i backup only a differences between last backup of transaction log file and current, or i always backup complete transaction log file?

thank you in advance!

Creating Index In MSSQL 2000 From MSSQL 2005

Mar 24, 2008

Hi,

I am a bit new to the MSSQL server. In our application, we use so many SQL queries. To imporve the performance, we used the Database enigine Tuning tool to create the indexes. The older version of the application supports MSSQL 2000 also. To re-create these new indexes, I have an issue in running these "CREATE INDEX" commands as the statements generated for index creation are done in MSSQL 2005. The statements include "INCLUDES" keyword which is supported in MSSQL 2005 but not in MSSQL 2000.

Ex:-

CREATE INDEX IND_001_PPM_PA ON PPM_PROCESS_ACTIVITY

(ACTIVITY_NAME ASC, PROCESS_NAME ASC, START_TIME ASC, ISMONITORED ASC)

INCLUDE

(INSTANCE_ID, ACTIVITY_TYPE, STATUS, END_TIME, ORGANIZATION);

Any help in creating such indexes in 2000 version is welcome.

Thanks,
Suresh.

Migration MSSQL 2000 32-bit To MSSQL 2005 64-bit

Nov 17, 2007

I've been tasked to move our production databases on MSSQL 2000 to 2005. I've supported MSSQL since version 6.5 and performed migrations to successor versions.

Current Environment is MSSQL 2000 32-bit with current Service Packs.

I've performed mock migrations on Test servers upgrading all Production instances simultaneously from MSSQL 2000 to 2005 32-bit. The Test environment is identical to Production minus server name, IP etc. Also I have a separate server with MSSQL 2005 installed where I use the DETACH / ATTACH and BACKUP / RESTORE method for migration / acceptance testing. There are approximately 30 databases totaling 70 GB. This has gone as expected and fairly successful. Vendors have been coordinated with to update code and staff for acceptance testing.

I'd prefer going directly to MSSQL 2005 64-bit instead if possible due to memory benefits etc. This is where I'd like some feedback prior to borrowing a 64-bit server for testing.

Upgrade options:

1. Is it better to migrate from MSSQL 2000 32-bit to 2005 64-bit via:
a. DETACH / ATTACH
b. BACKUP / RESTORE
c. Is one method more advantageous relating to the end result?
2. Regarding XP clients, have issues been experienced with the default SQL Server driver or is an alternate recommended for XP clients to connect to a MSSQL 64-bit server databases?
3. If you have performed this migration and have relevant experience please pass them along.

Deploying MSSQL 2005 Express DB To MSSQL 2005 WKGP Errors

Sep 29, 2006

DB is developed on local computer with MSSQL 2005 Express. My host is on MSSQL 2005 workgroup. Are they compatible, because I am getting errors? Is my approach wrong?

I have tried several approaches.

A) I created a backup of database on my local, then placed a copy on the server. Then I tried to restore through Server Management Studio. I get this error.

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

------------------------------

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

------------------------------

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.

RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3169)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=08.00.2039&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=3169&LinkId=20476

------------------------------

BUTTONS:

OK

------------------------------

B: I also have tried copying the database. I put it in the same path as the other databases that can be read with server management studio on the server. Then, tried to get to it through server managements studio and it did not appear. So I tried to attach it. Then I received this error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

------------------------------

Attach database failed for Server 'MROACH1'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Attach+database+Server&LinkId=20476

------------------------------

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

------------------------------

Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 10, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes.

Could not open new database 'LodgingDB'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 602)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=602&LinkId=20476

------------------------------

BUTTONS:

OK

------------------------------

C: I have also tried opening the Database, and back up file through Server Management Studio. without success.

D: I also tried Windows and Software update at microsoft update, but no updates were recommended for Version on Server.

I'm surprised this is so hard. My original data base was created in same family of software. 2005 MS SQL Express. I could use some direct help from someone experienced with this. Am I doing it wrong or are the DB versions incompatible.

Two Questions!

Aug 4, 1999

I have two questions,
1) Could anyone please point me in the right direction concerning information pertaining to NT Server Enterprise Edition verses NT Server Workstations. We are having problems running SQL Server 7.0 and the Enterprise Edition together on the same machine and was wanting to find information about compatability issues, if there are any,
2) I, on a SQL Server 6.5 database shrunk it by 2 Gb. When I looked to see if SQL Server released those 2 Gb back to the hard drive, I was amazed that it didn't! Did I miss something or will SQL Server 6.5 not release the space because of the initial set-up. And why did SQL Server 6.5 automatically take the space from the Transaction logs when neither of the devices were specified? Is the Transaction Log the default area for shrinkage?

Thanks in Advance!

DTS Questions

Feb 7, 2002

1. When we create DTS in SQL Server through DTS designer, where are they stored physically?
2. What would be the best way to modify a DTS without using DTS designer?
3. Is there any other way to create DTS apart from DTS designer and Visual Basic?
4. Is there any website which has detailed information for DTS? (which has more FAQs like above?)

In our production environment, we keep changing the servers frequently, and everytime that happens, I have to change the connection properties in all the DTS going to them one by one.

thanks,

ASP/SQL - Several Questions

Aug 21, 2006

Hi
Im relatively new to ASP/SQL and have been thrown into the deep end by work. Ive got courses to go on, but not for another 3-6months.

Ive got an ASP file calling a database using SQL. Once you hit the "go" button, it puts this data into an Excel file, under a new window (still showing the asp file in the address bar).

It currently shows:

1)
Item numbers that end in "0" i.e. 3.10, 12.20 appear as 3.1 and 12.2 respectively in the Bill of Materials … i.e. being treated as decimals … I need them to show-up as text.
************************************************** *******************
2)
When saving the spreadsheet … it would be good to get "X" to set the default file name to:
<Quote ID>_<Customer>_<Platform>_<version>.[xls|pdf]
************************************************** *******************
3)
When a spreadsheet is displayed, it is in an editable Excel format.
Is it possible to lock the file automatically when its opened or password protect it?
************************************************** *******************
4)
If a spreadsheet window is open and you try and open a new one, the old one pops-up/is still there. Need to be able to close the old one and re-open a new one automatically.

If necessary i will post the code.
Any takers?
Thanks
