MSSQL Service Restart On Principal Whilst Mirroring...

Apr 20, 2006

I have a problem that has happened a couple of times now. I'm in the process of testing our 2005 deployment - Standard edition on 2003 x64 servers for principal and mirror and 2005 express witness. All are pre SP1. Two databases are being mirrored.

I have successfully set up mirroring which seems to work fine - but when I restart the MSSQL service on the principal, spurious things happen:

The server that *was* the principal before restart

database A is in (Mirror, Disconnected / In Recovery) state
database B is in (In Recovery)

The server that *was* the mirror:

database A is in (Principal, Disconnected)
database B is in (Principal, Disconnected)

I can connect to both servers via Studio Manager and when I try to go to the current principal database to stop mirroring, the Studio Manager hangs and becomes non-responsive.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Can't Restart Mirroring. Error 1416 And 1443.

Dec 6, 2006

After stop mirroring, can't restart mirroring. Tried following two things, still can't restart mirroring.

1. Made a full DB backup and a log backup on principle, copied backup files to mirror and restored DB and log with NORECOVERY. Mirror DB is in "Restoring" status.

2. Delete DB on both principle and mirror, recreate DB on the principle, restore DB and log on the mirror with NORECOVERY. Mirror DB is in "Restoring" status.

In both cases, after clicked "Start Mirroring", got error 1416. In sql server log file, got error 1443 ("Database mirroring has been terminated..."). Please help.

Mirroring :: Principal Database Get Role Back After Being Back On Line

May 14, 2015

New to Database Mirroring and I have a question about the Principal database server. I have a Database Mirroring setup configured for High-safety with automatic fail over mode using a witness.

When a fail over occurs because of a lost of communication between the principal and mirror, the mirror server takes on the roll of Principal. When communication is returned to the Principal server, at some point does the database that was the previous Principal database automatically go back to being the Principal server?

Unable To Restart MSSQL Server After Changing My NT Password

Nov 22, 2000

I have recently changed my NT password and since then one of my machines has not been able to start MSSQL server. When I re-boot the machine it lets me know that it was unable to start MSSQL server. If I right click on the SQL server group in EM and try to manually start the service, it tells me that I have a login failure. I don't understand how changing my NT password would affect one machine and not the others. When I right click on the "edit SQL service registration properties" tab, all of the machines are using the NT password selection as opposed to the SQL server authentication password. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

I have got the error “a network related or instance specific error occurred sql server 2012 “.I have enabled tcp/ip, restarted the services. Here is the error...The log scan number (43:456:1) passed to log scan in database ‘model’ is not valid. This error may indicate data corruption or that the log file (.ldf) does not match the data file (.mdf). If this error occurred during replication, re-create the publication.

MSDASQL Error Requires SQL Service Restart

May 17, 2006

I am having trouble with a linked server using MSDASQL.  I'm connecting to a PostgreSQL database and pulling over data.  This process has been working fine.

In trying to pull data from a different client database (same schema), I received an error that the MSDASQL couldn't read the column names.

The actual problem I want help on is that after this happens, I am no longer able to make valid connections to any of my Linked Servers using MSDASQL.  The only way I can get my other linked servers to work again is to restart the SQL Service.  Usually this is impossible for me to do because of the number of active users.

Two questions:

1) Is there another way to restart a more targeted service or sub-set to reset MSDASQL connections, and clear out my problem?

2) Any idea why I'm getting this error connecting to PostgreSQL on a large dataset when it worked fine for a small dataset using the same linked server? "The provider reported an unexpected catastrophic failure."

Any help is appreciated.

Service Dependency On SQL Server And Restart/Restore

Jun 26, 2007

I have a service that depends on SQL Server service. Basically we make sure that our service only starts after SQL server service started. Unfortunately this dependency does not ensure that database is available.

Basically I observed in Application log that SQL server reports that it started to listen on a port. And then I see that recovery process started. As I understand SQL server is not available while database is in the recovery state.

Note: I might have not used a correct terminology to describe SQL server recovery process as I don't have access to Application log with the exact message at the moment. I can verify the message if necessary.

Because SQL server service is started our service starts and attempts to connect to the database. Service fails to connect to database, because of the restoration process. Once restoration is done service connects successfully.

I observed that restoration process starts every time machine is rebooted. It only takes a few minutes to run, but it is enough to generate a number of error messages in event log about failed SQL connections.

My first question is: Is it normal for database to enter into recovery state every time machine is rebooted?

My second question is: If it is a normal operation, is there any way to detect that SQL server is truly available, so our code does not have to try retry establishing connection many times

SQL Express Failed Login && Service Restart

Every so often I get an error when I pull up an ASP.NET 2.0 site using
SQL Express. It tells me that the login failed. If I go

Express and then refresh the site, it works just fine. Is this
some sort of bug or memory issue? Does the application need to
connect every so often or end up falling out somewhere?

SQL 2012 :: High Availability Groups Service Restart

Jun 9, 2015

I inherited a SQL 2012 Ent server sitting on a 2008R2 server using AlwaysOn High Availability, two nodes.

Available Mode: Synchronous commit
Failover Mode: Manual
Connection in Primary role: Allow all connections
Readable secondary: No
seesion timeout: 10

Somebody decided to give SQL server priority boost so I need to change this ASAP. So I plan on doing the following.

1. Manually fail over to the secondary, which does not have the priority boost set to true
2. change the setting
3. restart the service
4. Manually fail over

My question is with the service restart. How does SQL handle if the DB changes on the new primary while the secondary is having the service restarted. Where can I see if the DB are sync again or if not where are they in the sync process.

Service Stop/start/restart Questions 2005 SP2

Oct 15, 2007

A few service stop/start/restart questions on SQL Server 2005 SP2, whichI'll call SQLS.It looks as if there are *potentially* 6 ways to start/stop SQLSServices like the engine itself, integration services, reportingservice, Agent..-SQLS Configuration Manager-SQLS Surface Area Configuration (for Services and Connections)-Mgmt Studio Local (on server)-Mgmt Studio Remote (on client)-Windows Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services-Command Prompt (ala net start MSSQLSERVER)By policy, I am /not/ Administrator on the server. But I am SysAdminrole in SQLS. I have had various levels of success starting/stoppingservices in the ways listed above. In some I get Access denied, and inothers I get no msg and it simply doesn't work.Is there some special non-Admin OS group I need to be in to start/stopservices? Is this handled differently in the different interfaceslisted above? It seems like my best success for starting/stopping the engine and Agentis in /local/ Mgmt Studio, but /not/ remote Mgmt Studio - the optionsare greyed out on a remote client. Is this by design? Is it a SQLSbug?I'm sure I'm not the only SQLS DBA who does not have Admin rights on hisserver who wants to start/stop services. Generally speaking, how isthis intended to work?Any help appreciated.Allen JantzenA freshly minted DQLS DBA

MSSQL Mirroring : Unable To Access Mirror After Succes Failover

Oct 16, 2007

Hello everybody,

I'am currently testing a MSSQL 2005 mirroring implementation with automatically failover.

1 principal server ====> Server A
1 mirror server ====> Server B
1 witness server ====> Server C

When server A fails Server B becomes Principal. ( which is the general idea ) This is working perfectly.

The problem is when i try to connect to the mirror Server B ( actually the new principal )

I use the .NET connection string with the failover parameter ( even without the parameter ) the connection fails.
( the general error : unable to connect, or connection property has not been initialized )

Data Source=ServerA; Failover Partner=ServerB;Initial Catalog=DBMTest;uid=dbuser;pwd=dbpassword;

This connection property works fine when server A (original principal) is online.

When i run the SQL profiler with the mirror db as profile, i dont see the traffic.

So you think the mirror server has a network problem or was not connfigured for remote access.
i thought that also, but when i create a 'stand alone - non mirrored' database the same application with the same connetion string ( well.....different db) works fine.

The problem must be in the whole mirroring implementation....... ( my idea )

Does anyone had the same problem, or better, doed anyone know how to solve it?

Hope to hear from you soon!

Thank you in advance!

W.schmitt

Principal Db In Principal, Synchronizing State, The Mirror In Restoring State

Sep 26, 2007

We have mirroring setup for 5 dbs, 4 of which are synchronized and 1 which is in "synchronizing" state on the principal and "restoring" state on the mirror. Mirroring for all dbs has been working fine for the past several months and we have a witness that has allowed automatic failover in the past without problems.

This database has several bulk inserts performed throughout the day and am sure there is some latency due to the size of these transactions.

Not sure as to why this is happening all of a sudden, but the db in question has been in this state for the past 12 hrs. I checked the mirroring status on the principal and it states that it is "synchronizing: data is being transferred from principal to mirror", but the mirror server states that db is in "restoring" state. Can anyone suggest as to how I can get the database on the mirroring server to get back to "mirror, synchronizing/restoring..." state? Or suggest on how I can troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance.

Service Broker And Database Mirroring

Jul 24, 2006

I read the blog about service broker and database mirroring. Have you actually gotten this to work? I have a database that is mirrored. A third party vendor's software is using query notification which in turn uses service broker for dirty cache notification. Based on your blog I created a route specifying a mirror address.

CREATE ROUTE ServiceBrokerMirrorRoute AUTHORIZATION dbo
WITH SERVICE_NAME = 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/Notifications/QueryNotificationService', BROKER_INSTANCE = '70D4070D-C739-43B3-9167-7156209F87BA', ADDRESS = 'TCP://10.128.183.210:5100',
MIRROR_ADDRESS = 'TCP://10.128.183.211:5100'

And then I tried to ALTER DATABASE SET ENABLE_BROKER but it fails with a

Server: Msg 9778, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot create a new Service Broker in a mirrored database "mydatabase".
Server: Msg 5069, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER DATABASE statement failed.

Is there an order to this should I have enabled servicebroker on the database and then mirrored it?

Any help would be appreciated!

Service Broker Mirroring Problem

Oct 26, 2007

Hi,

My company has a system where we have a mirrored server and multiple clients communicating with that server using service broker. Up until now although we had mirroring set up, we weren't bothering to specify a mirror when creating routes from the clients to the server. Now that we've done this messages can be sent from the server to the clients, but not the other way round.

I suspect this is because the mirror database instance does not have the same certificates installed in its master database as the primary (we are using both transport and dialog security). I thought about manually copying the certificates over from backups, but I don't think this would work. Also, according to one of my colleagues, it isn't possible to mirror the master database (which makes sense).

I've tried altering the endpoints on each of the machines involved using the following to disable transport encryption, but maybe I'm not understanding something since this doesn't seem to work:

Code Block

use master
alter endpoint [EndpointName]
for service_broker (encryption = disabled)

My question is how can I either make sure that anything required for transport security is available to the mirror, or how do I disable transport security and simple use dialog security instead (and also if this is actually the problem).

Thanks in advance,

Adam Connelly

[edit] I think I've realised why disabling encryption doesn't do anything for me (i.e. the certificates are still used to sign the messages), but unfortunately knowing that doesn't solve my problem [/edit]

SQL 2012 :: Service Account Change And Mirroring

Apr 22, 2015

As the title suggests we are looking to change the service account of a SQL mirror implementation. I will be using the same account on all 3 servers involved in the configuration.

I know each server requires the account of the other two adding but as this will be the same account I assume this doesn't apply?

Also for mirrored databases already set up would I need to reconfigure the security for each one?

Is there anything I am missing?

Error Whilst Adding Foreign Key

I've been getting what I think is a bizarre error message whilst trying to create a foreign key between two tables.

Both are Int (4).

Yet when I run the following:

tblDailyOperatingData(DiaryID)

I'm getting the error message:

I also tried to create the relationship in a database diagram and this brought back errors as well.
