MSsQL2005; OPENROWSET, BLOB/IMAGE And STORED PROCEDURE Problems

Oct 7, 2006

All,

I work with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on windows XP professional.
I'd like to create stored procdure to add image to my database (jpg file).
I managed to do it using VARCHAR variable in stored procedure
and then using EXEC, but it don't work directly.

My Table definiton:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Users](
[UserID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[Login] [char](10),
[Password] [char](20),
[Avatar] [image] NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_Users] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[UserID] ASC
)WITH (IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF) ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY] TEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]

My working solution using stored procedure:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[AddUser]
@Login AS VARCHAR(255),
@Password AS VARCHAR(255),
@AvatarFileLocation AS VARCHAR(255),
@UserId AS INT OUTPUT
AS
BEGIN
SET @Query = 'INSERT INTO USERS ' + CHAR(13)
+ 'SELECT '''+ @Login + ''' AS Login, ' + CHAR(13)
+ '''' + @Password + ''' AS Password,' + CHAR(13)
+ '(SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK ''' + @AvatarFileLocation + ''', SINGLE_BLOB) AS OBRAZEK)'
EXECUTE (@Query)
SET @UserID = @@IDENTITY
END

I'd like to use statement in the stored procdure:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[AddUser]
@Login AS VARCHAR(255),
@Password AS VARCHAR(255),
@AvatarFileLocation AS VARCHAR(255),
@UserId AS INT OUTPUT
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE
@Query AS VARCHAR(MAX)

SET @AvatarFileLocation = 'C:hitman1.jpg'
INSERT INTO USERS
SELECT @Login AS Login,
@Password AS Password,
(SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK @AvatarFileLocation, SINGLE_BLOB) AS OBRAZEK)

SET @UserID = @@IDENTITY

END

It generates error:
Incorrect syntax near '@AvatarFileLocation'.

My question is:
Why it does not work and how to write the stored procedure code to run this code without errors.

Thanks for any reply

Inserting BLOB Using Stored Procedure

Sep 14, 2007

Hi,

Can we insert a blob in the database(eg: doc, jpeg, pdf, etc) from the sqlcmd prompt. I want to insert few files into my table having varbinary(max) column and i dont want to use any front end tool for making such insertions. What i am thinking of is providing a file system path for a particular file(eg: doc, jpeg, pdf, etc) to a stored procedure so that it can be inserted into the database, something that we can do via Oracle's sqlldr tool.

Displaying Blob Image From Db

Jun 10, 2004

I'm trying to retrieve an image that I have stored in a SQL Server db, and display it in an .aspx page. It's supposed to retrieve just one image, according to a unique key that's passed. However, when I view the page, nothing appears... just the Internet Explorer missing image placeholder.
I've tried code from several diff tutorials, and can't seem to get it to work.
I'm aware that some people think it's not a good idea to store images in a db, but I have to in this case, since the requirements for this project are that the images are stored in the database. I already know how to store references to file paths of images located in a server folder. I've just never done it this way... storing the whole images in the database. The table has 3 columns, one for the id, "FileType" stores the image type, and the "ImageBinary" is the image itself.
If anyone can shine some light on why my code doesn't display anything, I'd greatly appreciated your help.

Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

Dim myConnection As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("strConn"))
Response.Write("Page Loaded") 'This is just for testing to see if the page loads at all
Dim myCommand As New SqlCommand("Select * from UserImages WHERE id=1234", myConnection)
Try
myConnection.Open()
Dim DR As SqlDataReader
DR = myCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
If DR.Read() Then
Response.ContentType = DR.Item("FileType")
Response.BinaryWrite(DR("ImageBinary"))
Else
Response.Write("no image found")
End If
myConnection.Close()
Response.Write("<br>Image successfully retrieved!")
Catch SQLexc As SqlException
Response.Write("Read Failed : " & SQLexc.ToString())
End Try
End Sub

At least using a byte stream datatype it errors out when it is about to write to the olebd destination. Anybody have success using BLOB fields in SSIS package data flow? Thanks for any help.

Limit On Blob/image Data Type In SQL Compact 3.5 SP 1 BETA For ADO Entity Framework?

Apr 5, 2008

Hi! I tried to save some image data, but it get truncated at 8000 (the table column is defined as Image). I then wrote a converter to try ntext-datatype instead, but it gets truncated at 4000.

Error message:
System.Data.SqlServerCe: @3 : String truncation: max=4000, len=4168

The code uses only ADO entity framework for database access. Is there a way to store binary data larger than 8000 bytes? I am running SQL Compact 3.5 sp 1 BETA.

Insert Image Using Clr Stored Procedure

Sep 1, 2006

I tried to insert a row using a clr stored procedure where a field was a varbinary(max) and the data was a jpg file. The data was truncated to 8000 bytes. A similar T-SQL sp did not truncate the data even though the parameters were identical. With the clr sp I tried varbinary, variant and image for the parameter type. The variant gave an exception. The others worked but the data was truncated.

I used sqlpipe.executeandsend. Someone asked elsewhere if the pipe had an 8000 byte limit but was told it had not.

Any ideas?

Thanks, John

SQL Server 2012 :: Loading Image From File System Into Query Using Openrowset

May 14, 2014

I have a directory with images and a table in my DB with the path of each file. The main application allow me to create reports where I can display an image, so I was thinking to use a query like:

SELECT [ID]
,[PT_CODE]
,[FILE_PATH],
CASE WHEN [FILE_PATH] IS NOT NULL THEN
(SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK [FILE_PATH], SINGLE_BLOB) TT)
END
AS IMAGE_LOADED
FROM [DB].[dbo].[TABLE_MR_FILES]But I keep getting the error:

Incorrect syntax near 'FILE_PATH'.I have try multiple combinations without luck to make the OPENROWSET read the path stored in the column [FILE_PATH]. What am I missing?

Note: I am using MSSQL 2012. I don't want to import the images into the DB just load them in the fly as needed by the report runned from the application. I have full access to the DB so if a store procedure is the solution I can go with it.

How To Deal With Image Data Type Within Stored Procedure When Using SQL2000?

Dec 5, 2007

Hi,
Does anyone know how to deal with image data type within stored procedure when using SQL2000?
I have a table and there is an image data type column. In this table I need to make a copy of one row within a table through a SP /it means to retrieve the whole row within SP,  change another columns data (but, that the image is not modified) / and save the modified row back to the same table.
Problem is, that within SP is not alowed to use local varaibles of image data type. Does anyone know a solution for this? Please.
Thank you.

Error Inserting Image Into SQL Server2000 Table From Pocket PC Application Only When Using Stored Procedure In Table Adapter Wiz

main.ds.MailsSignature.AcceptChanges();

string[] signFiles = Directory.GetFiles(Settings.signDirectory);

foreach (string signFile in signFiles)

{

mailsSignatureRow = main.ds.MailsSignature.NewMailsSignatureRow();

mailsSignatureRow.Singnature = GetImageBytes(signFile); //return byte[] array of the image.

main.ds.MailsSignature.Rows.Add(mailsSignatureRow);

}

mailsSignatureTableAdapter.Update(main.ds.MailsSignature);

But now I am getting error "General Network Error. Check your network documentation" after specifying Use existing stored procedure in TableAdpater Configuration Wizard.

ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.Insert_MailSignature( @Singnature image )

AS

SET NOCOUNT OFF;

INSERT INTO MailsSignature (Singnature) VALUES (@Singnature);

SELECT Id, Singnature FROM MailsSignature WHERE (Id = SCOPE_IDENTITY())

For testing I created a desktop application and found that the same Code, same(Use existing stored procedure in TableAdpater Configuration Wizard) and same stored procedure is working fine in inserting image into the table.

Is there any limitation in CF?

BLOB&#39;s And Stored PRocedures

Sep 28, 2000

We are currently working on a method to store Visio drawings in a SQL Server database. One approach we looked at was to take and store the coordinates of each individual object in the drawing in a table, and then pull those coordinates back out when we need to render the drawing.

The second approach we are examining is the use of BLOB's; specifically, store the entire Visio drawing as a BLOB in SQL Server 7.
We have only been able to find examples utilizing ADO. Is anyone aware of any method to save BLOB's using stored procedures? We'd like to use this method fore simplicity and maintenance sake.

Any hepl would be appreciated.

Thank You.

Load Blob Into DB Using A Stored Proc, SQL Server 2000

May 15, 2008

Hi,

I want to load a file into a blob column using a stored proc. The file will be on a UNC path on the network. Is there a system stored proc or any utility that can be fired off from the sp, using xp_cmdshell that will take a file path from the filesystem and load it into a blob column in a database table.

I have worked with blob fields in the past but in those instances I loaded the blobs into the database from front end ADO.net code. This time around I need to pull this off stricktly from a stored proc.

Any help will be appreciated.

thank you.

Openrowset In Stored Proc Returning 'S:' Is Not A Valid Path

Nov 2, 2007

I am having a difficult time figuring this one out. I have a stored procedure that as part of an ASP.Net app connects to a csv file through a mapped network drive and imports the data into a table in SQL Server. Here it is.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[usp_ImportComp]

-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@CSV as varchar(255)
AS
BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON;
Begin Try
Begin Tran
Declare @sql as nvarchar(max)
Set @SQL = 'Insert into dlrComp ( SN,
CM,
PM,
MC,
Comp_Total,
XU,
GM,
From_Date,
To_Date)
Select [Serial Number],
CM,
PM,
MC,
[Comp Total],
XU,
GM,
[From Date],
[To Date]
FROM OPENROWSET(' + char(39) + 'MICROSOFT.JET.OLEDB.4.0' + char(39) + ',' + char(39) + 'Text;Database=S:' + char(39) + ',' + char(39) + 'SELECT * FROM ' + @csv + char(39) + ')'
--print @sql
Exec sp_executesql @stmt=@sql
Commit Tran
End Try
Begin Catch
Rollback Tran
--Do some logging and stuff here
End Catch
END

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I am connected to SQL through SQL Management Studio while logged in on the server that is running SQL as DomainUser1 and execute

exec usp_ImportComp @CSV='Comp.csv'

It completes successfully

However if I open SSMS (while logged into Windows on my PC as DomainUser2) using runas to run it as DomainUser1 while logged into my PC and connect to SQL Server using WIndows Auth and run the same I get the following error message.

OLE DB provider "MICROSOFT.JET.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)" returned message "'S:' is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.".

If I add
With Execute as 'DomainUser1' and modify the stored procedure I get the same error message above.

If I log onto the Server that is running SQL as DomainUser2 I can successfully run

exec usp_ImportComp @CSV='Comp.csv'

Both User1 and User2 have the same permissions to the Share and csv as does the Domain user under whose context SQL Server is running.

What am I doing wrong?

To BLOB Or Not To BLOB, That Is The Question.

Aug 1, 2006

We are debating what is industry “best practice for serving huge numbers of images in an industrial scale website. More directly, which approach produces the best performance and the best scalability? For example, how do sites like ebay, Amazon, and other large sites handle the millions or billions of images they must deal with?

Store as BLOB in sql server?

Store in /images folder and store url text into sql server?

We always assumed that the second approach is what most sites must do. But do they?

One developer on our team maintains that storing one million or more image files in a directory will most certainly result in poor performance, because the server must scan the directory, searching for the correct file, each time a web request is made. The directory is not indexed (?) so performance must eventually suffer.

Other developer counters that storing millions of images as BLOBs into sql server will result in poor performance and HUGE database. An additional layer of access (webserver to sql server, back to webserver, then to client) causes a delay and performance hit.
 Who is right? What do the gurus as the world class sites do?

Calling A Stored Procedure Inside Another Stored Procedure (or Nested Stored Procedures)

Nov 1, 2007

Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly.  For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie
exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created'
returns an int value as 1
(performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created')
but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie:
exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1'
which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc):
SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example).
My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert).
Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?

Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)

Please help and advise.

I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly.
I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.

Dec 12, 2005

Installed SQL2005, connect via (the new) SQL Nativ Client ODBC Vers. 2005.90.1399.00 works, just as (the old) SQL Server ODBC-Driver 2000.85.1117.00. Works fine.
