Main And Detail Table Amount Calculations

Hi all,
I have a 2 main tables in my system. One is main table has ticket information location and so on. And detail table which hold all actions on that record with multiple money fields (its around 5 fields). it goes trough some crazy calculations on the detail table and get 5 results for each ticket. And this calculation is done everytime the ticket is looked at.
There is around 10 detail records per 1 main record. and the main table is around 7 mil. records
Now i got 2 options. I can create a trigger that does the calculation and update the main table show the results from there. This is going to affect all updates deletes and inserts.
OR
I can leave as it is so only when they view the ticket it does the calculation. Dont ask me how often they view it i dont have a clue.( if there is any suggestion how to get the count i could try to do it. )

What is the best way to transfer data from the staging table into the main table.
Example:
Staging Table Name: TableA_satge (# of rows - millions)
Main Table Name: TableA_main (# of rows - billions)
Note: Staging table may have some data same as the main table.
Currently I am doing:
- Load data into staging table (TableA_stage)
- Remove any duplication of rows from the staging table (TableA_stage)
- Disable all indexes on main table (TableA_main)
- Insert into main table (TableA_main) from staging table (TableA_stage)
- Remove any duplication of rows from the main table using CTE (TableA_main)
- Rebuild indexes on main_table (TableA_main)
The problem with the above method is that, it takes a lot of time and log file size grows very big.

I am trying to insert bulk data into main table from staging table in sql server 2012. If any error comes, this total activity is rollbacked. I don't want that to happen. I want to know the records where ever the problem persists, and the rest has to be inserted.

I am listing detail transaction lines in a table sorted by account and order number.
the problem is that I only want to see the detail if the sum of a value field is zero for all the transactions in an order otherwise ignore the detail for that order.
I was trying Group by and Having but this doesn't seem to do what I need.
Being relatively new to Reporting services, any nudge in the right direction would be useful.

I'm trying to build a query to highlight changes occurred to fields between the MainTable record and its audited records in MainTableAudit, for example, let's suppose i entered an item with some wrong attributes, and edited it three times:

Note:
1.'Sum weight' is the accumulation of weight between two readings. The weight of the previous reading is not included in the calculation. Example: the 'sum weight' of location A-23 between the reading on 1/24/2004 to 1/31/2004 is (10.8+25.3+27.3+26.9)= 90.3
2.'Reading var.' is the substraction value of the most recent reading value to the previous date reading values. Example: the 'reading var' for location A-23, between the latest reading on 01/31/2004 and previous reading on 01/24/2004 is 0.0075. If there is no value on previous reading, then the latest date reading is substracted by zero (0). The substraction can only be done on the records of similar reading location (A-23 or B-60, etc).
3. 'Location' is obtained from the most recent date of reading, which is used for the calculation.
4. 'PK' is obtained similarly than procedure at point 3.

I have constructed my main report using the table item from the toolbox. In maintable I have two groupings.
In the maintable I have grouping2 set for a page break after each grouping.
I have set the subreport parameter to the field value of the maintable grouping2.
I want to display the contents of the subreport after grouping1 of the maintable on the same page.
I have achieved a result by placing the subreport in maintable_group2 footer. However when I save it as an excel sheet it says "Subreports within table/matrix cells are ignored".
I really don't like how the report displays like this in the report server however I will need to export this report to excel.
Have I explained my issue well enough?

Hi Experts,
I need to know the best approach to save data in master table and then in detail table.
I know this method but i know it's not a good approach why i will explain
Insertion in Master Table..................................... A
Insertion in Detail Table........................................B
Now if there is any exception occurred while step A then the step B will not take place which is ok but if there is exception while step B then the process A will have completed
i.e the data in master table will be Inserted/Deleted/Updated but there will not be a corresponding action in Detail table which is not good approach.
So please can any one tell me a good approach for this.

I have a detail table of comments. I need to grab the fist 50 characters from the comment field from this table. The kick is that I need to get the comments from all of the records in the detail table, as the comments might be less than 50 characters, so i need to pull the comments from the other comment records that apply to the master table record.
right now i have the comments in a join to the master table, but this is causing a few records to be returned....
I guess what i am looking for is a way to grab the comment value from the first record of the detail table.

Two questions:
1) I am unable to get a detail row of my table to suppress. I am using:
=Iif(IsNothing(Fields!Address2.Value), True, False)
2) I am not able to get an If/Then statement to work. I am able to use the followingl; however, ideally I would want to have multiple if/else statements:

I have a flat file with header and detail information, it is actually employee punch card data. I need to parse the header line which contains the Employee ID and don't save it to a table just save the value. Then with the detail line, parse the different data elements and save them along with the employee ID to one table. Then continue until the next header line is read.
The file looks something like this:

I have a table with AmountSold and AmountLeftWith. I have to buy from the customers until the amount bought =250,000.
The max that user can buy is 250,000 so customers 1-3 get left with 0 (AmountLeftWith ) and customer 4 with 577 (AmountLeftWith ) after the update as user couldn't buy the entire amount as it would have exceeded 250,000. Preferably the query should stop afterwards and not proceed to check the other customers.

The CUSTOMERS table holds the record date span into which the FLAGS table records have to "fit". I'm creating a temporary table in a Sql 2005 stored procedure that contains the transaction amount entered in a period <= the period the user enters.
I can return that amount in my result set. But I also need to separate out by account the amounts just in the period = the period the user enters. There can be many entries or no entries in any period. I populate the temporary table this way:

Later I create a temporary table that contains budget information. I join these 2 temporary tables to produce my result set. But I don't know how to get the information for just one period. For example, if the user enters 99 as the FiscalPeriod_identifier, I need a separate field that contains only those amounts(if any) that were entered for each account in Period 99.
Can anyone help? It may be that I am not seeing the forest for the trees, but I can't figure it out.

where grade could be any Alphabet, the column of result query could varies
each grade contain sum of (in-out) of all item_id of detail table.

Hello,
I'm new to SQL and need help with a query. Not sure if this is the right place.
I have 2 tables, one MASTER and one DETAIL.
The MASTER table has a masterID, name and the DETAIL table has a detailID, masterID, and value columns.
I want to return a populated MASTER table with entries based on the DETAIL.value.
SELECT MASTER.*
FROM MASTER
WHERE DETAIL.value > 3
This is a simplified version of my problem. I can't figure out how to set the relationship between MASTER.masterID and DETAIL.masterID. If I do an INNER JOIN, the number of results are based on the number of DETAIL entries. I only want one entry per MASTER entry.
Hope this makes sense.
How can I do this?

I want to recursively select all records within a hierarchy, using the main parentid and a textvalue on level 1 OR level 2 of the subcategories.
My data:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[articlegroups](
[id] [int] NOT NULL,
[parentid] [int] NOT NULL,
[catlevel] [tinyint] NOT NULL,
[slug_en] [nvarchar](50) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_globos_articlegroups] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

When selecting rows I always have the main parentId (so catlevel 0) and the slug_en value.
In my example case I have id 129 and slug_en='cradles'.
I want my query to then return:
idparentidcatlevel
12900
1301291
1361302If I have id 129 and slug_en='pillows'.
I want my query to then return:
idparentidcatlevel
12900
1391291
How can I do this? I'm new to SQL Server. I was reading here [URL] .... on recursive SQL, but how to implement this as I just have one table and I also have 2 selection criteria (main category id and a text value on either level 1 or 2).

How to delete records from multiple tables if main table’s entity is deleted as constraints is applied on all..There is this main table called Organization or TblOrganization.and this organization have branches which are in Brach table called tblBranch and this branch have multiple applications let say tblApplication and these application are used by multiple users called tblUsers.What I want is: when I delete the Organization All branches, application and users related to it must be deleted also.How I can apply that on a button click in asp.net web forms..Right now this is my delete function which is very simple

I need to delete data from a particular table which has more than half a million records. The data needs to be deleted is more than 200,000 records from the table. What is the best way to delete the data from the table other than importing into a temporary table and performing the same operation?
Let me know if the strategy to be followed is okay.
1. Drop all the triggers
2. Drop all the indexes
3. Write a procedure with a loop setting ROWCOUNT to 1000 and delete the records. ( since if I try to delete all the rows it will give timeout error )
The above procedure will delete 1000 records for each batch inside the loop till it wipes out all the data for the specified condition.
4. Recreate Indexes and Triggers.
Please let me know if there are any other optimal solution.

I have a table with 35,000 records in it. I want to update a value in column A for only the first 5000 records, leaving the value in Column A for the remaining 30,000 records as it is now. What would be the command I would use to update Column A for the first 5000 records.

I am wondering if its possible to lock a SQL table for specific amount of time, say 5 min.
There is a particular 'Phone' table on the database that should never get locked. Yet, during the development stages we have noticed that the table gets locked at time. The issue since has been resolved to the best of our ability, but, there is still a vague chance that the table can get locked due to the multiple jobs that query the table, when we go live.
If such a situation occurs, we just want to be able flip the switch that will send the server to the mirror mode and the previously mirrored database to become the principal.
So, I just want to recreate a situation by voluntarily locking the table.
Any help in this regard will be appreciated.
