Maintanance Plan Reports Failer. T-Logs And Backups Successful
Nov 28, 2001
I have a Mantenance Plan running on my Production Server.
Each job has one step.
-Optimization (each week)
-Integrity Checks (each week)
-T-Log Backups (each hour)
-Full Back up (once a day)
The Job is saying the last three are failing but niether the SQL Server Logs or MS Application Log are reporting a success or faluire. "write to windows application log on faluire" is set for all of them. The backups are occuring, as the files are in thier destination.
Anyone experience this before? If so any advise?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi,
We have maintanance plan defined that runs every night for optimization, integrety check and full backup. Somehow, for last two days I have been receiving the following error about two out of four databases.
[1] Database customere7: Check Data and Index Linkage...
** Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 1 secs **
[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 15089: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot change the 'single user' option of a database while another user is in the database.
[2] Database producte7: Check Data and Index Linkage...
Strange thing is that we don't have this database in single user mode. They are the the main production databases and optimization and backup jobs run OK.
Please help me..I am not sure whether there is a major problem with database or what I should check. Does running integrety check after optimization job affect anything?
Daily activities seem normal with these databases.
Please help.

We use AlwaysOn availability groups, which has 2 SQL nodes configured (version: 11.0.3373.0), my full and differential backups are working for all my databases, however I am unable to perform any LOG backups.
I have double checked my Availability Group settings, and the backup preferences is set to: 'Prefer Secondary'
I've tried creating a maintenance job as well as using Ola Hallengren's maintenancescript job to back them up, but nothing is written to the drive. All jobs return successful every time, and take less then 3 seconds to run. There are no events being written in the SQL error log or event log.

I am setting up Availability Groups and I want to use the secondary replica to perform the full copy_only backups to reduce the load on the primary replica. But what is the best way to check for successful full backups on Availability Group databases?
Previously I could check the system table msdb.dbo.backupset but this is not available for copy_only backups. So I wonder how people are monitoring that their full backups have been successful?
Do you just check that the SQL Agent job that runs the backup was successful?
Or do you search the SQL Server Error Log for entries like "Database backed up. Database: xxx" where database xxx is in an Availability Group?
Or is there a better method?

Our backups by default go to a network location, but I'd like to modify our maintenance plans to backup to an alternative location if the primary location isn't available. I've setup two Backup Database Tasks where the second one runs only if the first one Fails, and if the second one runs (on first one's failure) it then sends a notification to me so I know this occurred.
The Plan is running as expected, when I simulate a bad path in the first Backup Task the second one runs and the notification is sent, but the Job shows failure. I'd like to show the job as Successful when this occurs since I'm handling the issue and notification within the Plan, but I'm unable to find out how. I've set FailParentOnFailure to False on the Plan and I've changed the MaximumErrorCount to 2 with the assumption that this would work, but neither didn't.
Also I'm running into this in both SQL 2008 and SQL 2012.

What is the advantage of taking frequent tran log backups (say every 30mins) as opposed to once a day? Say, I backup data and tran log once every night and I lost a table at 10:00am next day. Can't I recover the database to the point in time by restoring the previous night's backup and then applying the transaction log from previous night and then applying the transaction log (to the point int time) that you just dumped when the mishap was reported to you?
Thanks

Have a small shop and a maintenance plan that does a full backup on all user databases every night. I would have thought that a full backup (transaction log, too), would reduce the size of the transaction logs? Isn't that the point of a full backup? Mine seem to be growing larger. I do the shrink, rebuild indexes, backup the databse, backup the transaction log, clear history and folders older than 7 days. For example, the following db decreased only once during the period. But, note how the transaction log size continues to increases most of the time.
db, trn
253,196 - 394,245
253,193 - 365,695
253,191 - 360,572
254,219 - 381,699
254,223 - 406,346
254,223 - 411,018
Can someone explain this to me? Am I doing something wrong or just not understanding the process correctly?
Thanks,
Janet

I've set up a maintenance plan to back up the database at a certain time of day. But it never seems to work, which I don't understand. I'm the creator of the database as well as the DBA with all rights. I can create a manual backup, and I have full access to the default backup directory on SQL server. I've also tried scheduling automatic backups, but it won't work from there either. I've tried pretty much everything to get this to work. I've checked the Maintenance Plan History for that particular Maintanance Plan, and it shows no evidence of failure--or any history of activity at all--nothing. It just ignores the maintenance plan entirely. What could be the problem here?

It seems there are at least 3 ways to back up my databases in SQL2000
1) Veritas BackupExec
2) SQL Sever Backup
3) SQL Maintenance Plan
I don't quite see what the difference is between 2 & 3.
I'm currently using Veritas to do a full backup to tape, and a separate full backup to disk via a Maint Plan (a complete backup & trans log backup). It looks as though I've finally got my trans log to stop getting bigger (it started a new one) .... can I delete the huge one I don't need anymore. Does "truncate" mean the log is deleted, or just inactive as a new log gets created. I been reading up on this, but apparently it hasn't sunk in yet.
Please give me any long winded, but clear help you might have

Hi, I have a scheduled maintenance plan that backs up my database (SQL 2000). The db is 108 Meg. Usually the backup files are around 89 Meg and the transaction log backups are around 4.5 Megs.
The problem is that every once a while the backup fails with the following error:
[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 3202: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Write on 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLBACKUPCRM_db_200312230100.BAK' failed, status = 112. See the SQL Server error log for more details.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
What usually happens is that the last backup that has failed has a size of 9 or 8 Gigs!
My guess is that a backup file gets corrupt (the size increases to 8 Gigs) and the server runs out of space and won’t be able to do more backups. However I can’t figure out why the backup file size increases to and gets corrupt.
Can anyone help me?

How often does the trans. logs need a back up?

I'm missing something basic...
Trying to create a new job from sql server 2005 Management Studio. The nifty wizard under Management provides options to create backups, and clean history, but I cant seem to find out how to create a job to purge old backups.
Looking at the commnand line Sql Server Agent Job shows:
/SQL "Maintenance PlansFull Backups" /SERVER "JFSLIB-DEV" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF
But as you can see, doesn't help a novice like myself, as it appears to be command options to run the "integration" package.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Has anyone been able to successfully delete old backup files(*.bak) and tran logs (*.trn) TOGETHER using maintenance plan cleanup task in SQL 2005 SP2.
this is transact sql running in the back ground.
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'F:MSSQL.2MSSQLBackupibmdir',N'"bak" & "trn"',N'2007-03-26T22:21:14',1
This DOESNT WORK.
It works if I just try to delete only one of the things ie trn or bak files.
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'F:MSSQL.2MSSQLBackupibmdir',N'bak',N'2007-03-26T22:21:14',1
But is there a way to delete both bak and trn files using one task ?

I know that SQL Servers can be set up to forward alerts to a singleSQL Server. I am wondering if same would be true for the MaintenancePlan Reports. Basically, I want to have only one SQL Server on thenetwork that has the SQL Agent Mail profile set up, and to use thatserver for all e-mail and/or pager notifications for all alerts andevents raised by any of the SQL Servers on the network, includingMaintenance Plan reports. Is this possible? Is anything required toset this up beyond alerts forwarding?Alexey Aksyonenko

I really know nothing about SQL Server, dbo_owners, security etc what do I need to do to get this going? I really need this to work as I'm running out of time. The GUI is done and static parts of the site are done too just need to hook up the dynamic bits by Wed morning. Any help would be much appreciated :)

Hi,
All the maintanance jobs scheduled for weekend are still running after 66 hours.
1. transaction log backup
2. integrity check
3. complete backup
4. optimization job
I stopped the jobs from scheduled task lists, I can still see them running through current activity window.
Is it ok to kill them? Or how I can stop them?
Thanks,
Ann

Hi Guys/Gals,
Need some comments/ideas on the following scenario:
Current Situation:
-I have a PROD DB and a REPORTING DB( Separte Physical Servers).
-PROD DB replicates (Transactional) to REPORTING DB. ( Using only Replication Wizard to set up, quite easy)
-DB is for running shopfloor(manufacturing) applications, thus needs to be minimum downtime.
-Retention period for PROD DB data is 3 months ,Reporting DB is 3 years.
Future Problem that I will encounter:
-Purging of data in PROD DB will be replicated into Reporting.
-Schema change in PROD DB need to delete existing Publication before able to change schema.
-After schema change, need to recreate publication and rerun snapshot.
Questions:
-How to prevent the purging to be replicated to Reporting?
Switching off Replication when Purging takes place will not help. The only solution
I am thinking of is to alter the store procedure for replication during purging.
Is there any other "CLEANER" hassle free way?
- How to cater shema changes better?
Currently the data is not alot, but down the road, it might go to Terabytes, by then running a
snapshot will cost us alot. Is there any way not to redo a snapshot for this scenario?
Please give your comments/ideas/ .
Thanks.

Hi,
In my case I have to log the errors raised by any task in a package to either windows event log, text file or SQL server. Also I need to send an email notifications to a group of people telling them about the error.
Now can I use SSIS package logging for logging the errors into the required destinations. I mean right clicking on the package and selecting Logging, then adding the required log providers and enabling the events for logging into those. I think I have to upfront select the log providers to log the error, I will not have the liberty to log the error to the destination, the name of which is passed as a variable to the package. This is okay with me though.
Now what will a custom log provider help me to do in this case. Also can I somehow configure my package to call the send mail task everytime an error is raised.
Also, one more option can be developing a package that only does the error handling. It will take in the paramters or the error codes and descriptions, the destination to write to and a flag to send mail or not for that particular type of error.
What do you think? Kindly advise.
Thanks in advance for your help and time.
Regards,
$wapnil

The space allocated to the Log in question is 180 GB. During this time period I was running TLog backups every 5 minutes, yet the log continued to chew through to 80 GB used, even after the process was complete and a final TLog backup had been taken. It continued to stay very large until the Full backup was complete -- or something else that I'm unaware of completed. Like every other DBA I typically take a TLog backup to shrink the log, but what appeared to be the case here was the Full completed and it released the used log space. All said, will Transaction Log backups not free up the log during Full backups?

We have a debate in our team about embedded SQL vs. Stored Procs.
The argument is why use SP's if you can embed the SQL in the code and SQL2K will cache it on the fly?
I can't find any definitive information on pros and cons between the two methods.
If there are no major performance issues, or gotchas, I guess it comes down to developer preference.
SP Pros:
- Great SQL support in VS.NET (dev, debug, integration)
- Seperation of database specific code from middle tier.
- Less lines of code in middle tier
- VS.NET support for .xsd dataset definitions.
- Logic closer to data for more demanding processes.
Embedded SQL Pros:
- Less artifacts for version control
- Better encapsulation of logic
Any info would be appreciated.
thanks
