Make Sql Function To Modify Data Like Sql Procedure To Improve Code Structure And Readability.

Aug 27, 2007

Now Sql Function can not modify data as Sql Procedure like other database, it's very troublesome at most case!
in most case, Sql Function is used to improve code structure then it can be maintanced easy! BUT only because it can not modify data, there are 2 troublesome way:

1. Make all callers in the path from Sql Functions to Sql Procedure. and the coder will cry, the code will become very
confusional , and very difficult to maintance.

2. Divide the Sql Function into a thin CLR wrapper to call a Sql Procedure, can only use another connection, BUT can not be in the same transaction context And the code is ugly and slow.

You should not give limitation to Sql Function, should just limit the using context of Sql Function!

The sql code is more difficult to read and maintance than norm code(C#), then the improving code structure and readability should be one of your most important task, that's why microsoft!

Modify Table Structure Via Stored Procedure(?)

Jun 9, 2008

Our ERP vendor is helping us migrate from one version of their product to another. In the new version, they have added some columns and changed a few data types in several existing tables.

They sent us a list of the modifications that were necessary, which we did (painstakingly) by hand. But, for other reasons the update failed and we have to start anew.

This got me thinking: is there any way to do this kind of update via a script/stored procedure? I don't have their exact changes handy, but it was stuff like the table "inmast" needs a column of varchar(50) called "lotc" added to it, and the "intime" table needs the datatype of columns "Mon" "Tue" "Wed" changed from text to varchar(50), stuff like that.

Is it possible to do stuff like that in a SP?

Joining Two Tables To Modify A Tree Structure With More Information

Jul 30, 2007

I’m trying to create a modified catalog tree out from two tables in sql

The catalog is created from two tables.

Table 1 has the lowest level and is showing the connection with the item and the lowest ItemGroup. It also shows the connection with the MainCatalog

MainCatalogId, ItemGroupId, ItemId

Example data:

(sorry for the tabs that won't work)
MainCatalogIdItemGroupIdItemId
715063823
715073824
715093825
715093826

The catalog structure is in table 2. Here are the connections between the different

ItemGroupId, ParentId

Example data:

ItemGroupIdParentId
15061365
15071365
15091364
13641066
13651066
1066NULL

To be able to use create the tree structure and not getting the result set to big, I need it to look something like this:

ItemGroupIdItemIdLevel 2 level 3Level4
1506 3823136510667
1507 3824136510667
1509 3825136410667
1509 3826136410667

I have tried many ways, but I’m not getting the result I want.

Hope this was understandable, and that someone has an idea if this is manageable

Thanks :)

Improve This Function

Nov 30, 2005

I wrote the following function a few years ago - before I learned about SQL's PATINDEX function. It might be possible to check for a valid email address syntax with a single PATINDEX string which could replace the entire body of hte function below.

Is anyone is interested in taking a crack at it?

Signed... lazy Sam

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.EmailIsValid (@Email varchar (100))
/*
RETURN 1 if @Email contains a valid email address syntax, ELSE RETURN 0
*/

RETURNS BIT
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @atpos int, @dotpos int

SET @Email = LTRIM(RTRIM(IsNull(@Email, ''))) -- remove leading and trailing blanks

IF LEN(@Email) = 0 RETURN(0) -- nothing to validate

SET @atpos = charindex('@',@Email) -- position of first (hopefully only) @

IF @atpos <= 1 OR @atpos = LEN(@Email) RETURN(0) -- @ is neither 1st or last or missing

IF CHARINDEX('@', @email, @atpos+1) > 0 RETURN(0) -- Two @s are illegal

IF CHARINDEX(' ',@Email) > 0 RETURN(0) -- Embedded blanks are illegal

SET @dotpos = CHARINDEX('.',REVERSE(@Email)) -- location (from rear) of last dot

IF (@dotpos < 3) or (@dotpos > 4) or (LEN(@Email) - @dotpos) < @atpos RETURN (0) -- dot / 2 or 3 char, after @

RETURN(1) -- Whew !!

END
Go

Transact SQL :: Ensure Code Non Regression By Keeping Consistent Signature For Procedure / Views And Function

Jul 28, 2015

In the 70-461 objectives it says: Ensure code non regression by keeping consistent signature for procedure, views and function (interfaces); security implications...I think I understand what this means in general. They want us to be able to create a view that will still be able to call the original data even if the table is modified.  In other words, the view table shouldn't easily be broken. ie, type a code that does NOT ensure non regression, then change the code so that it does ensure non regression.

How To Modify This Code So That It Also Tests For NULL

Aug 2, 2004

Hi,
I'm trying to extend the usage of the code below. This method returns a variable of type SQLParameter and what I want is to accomodate even a check for a null in the parameter. This is a code which I got from one of my co-workers who isn't anymore working here. Any help would be appreciated. I do not want to throw an exception here when a field's type doesn't fall into one of the categories below. The method where this methos is called is the first part of my below code. How To Modify Schema At Run-time - My Code Or SQL Server?

Mar 27, 2007

Hi Smart Folks,
My SQL Server-based app will require generating a few tables at run-time, and, possibly, a new small database. Again, this is at run-time. Any advice on this? Should I build the functionality from the app, having my code generate all of the commands on the db to create what I need, or should I rely on SQL Server functionality (Scripts? SPs?) to do so. I am sure there is trade-off in one appraoch versus the other - I could use a tour of the trade-offs.
Thanks all!

Help Improve My Update Stored Procedure

May 29, 2008

need help improve my update PROCEDURE
i have this update PROCEDURE and it work ok but it is problematic
because i have to add all the time a new category 101,102,103,104,105,106 ........................
all the time i have to to rewrite the stored procedure and add new category

so my question is how to improve my update PROCEDURE
like for example create a table index

row_fld fld_index fld_text
---------------------------------------------------
1 101 a

1 102 e
2 102 f

Can I Make This Code Better Using SQLParamater Object?

Feb 23, 2006

I wrote a class to handle my sqlDataReaders:
Namespace CommonFunctions
Public Class DataAccess
Public Sub New()
End Sub
Private ConnStr As String = "connectionString"
Public Function returnDR(ByVal strSQL As String) As SqlClient.SqlDataReader
Dim dr As SqlClient.SqlDataReader
Dim myCn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection(ConnStr)
Dim myCmd As New SqlClient.SqlCommand(strSQL, myCn)
myCn.Open()
dr = myCmd.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
Return dr
End Function ' returnDR
End Class ' Public Class DataAccess
End Namespace ' Namespace CommonFunction
The way I invoke this is:
Imports CommonFunctions
Dim da As New DataAccess
Dim sqlDataReader As SqlDataReader
Dim strSQL As New StringBuilder
strSQL.Append("Some SQL Query")
sqlDataReader = da.returnDR(strSQL.ToString())
Do While sqlDataReader.Read()
strVar = sqlDataReader("columnName")
Loop ' Do While sqlDataReader.Read()
sqlDataReader.Close()
What I would like to do, is use the SQL Paramater Object instead of passing my method a String.  One so that I dont have to explicitly test for SQL Injection and two, cause I have never worked with the SQL Paramater Object before.  :)

Make Date Function (like In VB)

Dec 11, 2002

I hate manipulating dates in SQL. One of the many things Access and VB handles much better!

I wanted a function like DateSerial(Year,Month,Day) so I created one.

One caveat: The Year must be >= 1800. But all other numbers can be most any int value that results in a valid date.

Which means you can do:

MDate(Year(@d),1,1) (first day of date @d)
MDate(Year(@d), Month(@d) + 1, -1) (last day of month of date @d)
MDate(2000,1,1) (create a date quickly and easily w/o convert)
MDate(Year(@d)+1,1,1) (get first day of next year for date @d)

..etc... whatever you can do with VB's DateSerial() function, except for the year must be >=1800.

Or, does this exist already in SQL and I'm missing it somewhere??

Is there an easier/better way to do this?

* * * *

Create function MDate(@Year int, @Month int, @Day int)
returns datetime
AS
BEGIN
declare @d datetime;
set @d = dateadd(year,(@Year - 1800),'1/1/1800');
set @d = dateadd(month,@Month - 1,@d);
return dateadd(day,@Day - 1,@d)
END

How To Modify My Stored Procedure So That...

Aug 2, 2004

Hi,
Below is the SP that I want to modify it such that it does another thing apart from what its doing now. I want to to delete all the records corresponding to the BpDate value before this insert happens. by meaning deleting all the records, I meant to say delete all records where BpDate = @BpDate and SiteCode = @SiteCode.

CREATE PROC CabsSchedule_Save

@JulianDate smallint,
@SiteCode smallint,
@BpDate smallint,
@CalendarDay smallint,
@BillPeriod smallint,
@WorkDay smallint,
@CalDayBillRcvd varchar(30),
@Remarks varchar(50)

AS

INSERT INTO
CabsSchedule(JulianDate, SiteCode, BpDate, CalendarDay, BillPeriod, WorkDay, CalDayBillRcvd, Remarks)
VALUES
(@JulianDate, @SiteCode, @BpDate, @CalendarDay, @BillPeriod, @WorkDay, @CalDayBillRcvd, @Remarks)
GO

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

How Do You Improve SQL Performance Over Large Amount Of Data?

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I am using SQL 2000 and has a table that contains more than 2 millionrows of data (and growing). Right now, I have encountered 2 problems:1) Sometimes, when I try to query against this table, I would get sqlcommand time out. Hence, I did more testing with Query Analyser and tofind out that the same queries would not always take about the sametime to be executed. Could anyone please tell me what would affect thespeed of the query and what is the most important thing among all thefactors? (I could think of the opened connections, server'sCPU/Memory...)2) I am not sure if 2 million rows is considered a lot or not, however,it start to take 5~10 seconds for me to finish some simple queries. Iam wondering what is the best practices to handle this amount of datawhile having a decent performance?Thank you,Charlie Chang[Charlies224@hotmail.com]

Hey folks, I'm looking at making the following query more efficientpotentially using the ranking functions and I'd like some advice fromthe gurus. The purpose of the following is to have a status for aperson, and also have a historical background as to what they've done,status wise. This was the best way I could come up with to do this afew years back, but I'm wondering if there's a better way with Sql2005.Here's a toned down structure and my query. Modify Existing Stored Procedure??

Dec 2, 2005

I have a stored procedure I created in SQL Server 2000 enterprise manager which I would like to modify in SQL Server 2005 Express Management Studio.  When I right click on the stored proc and select "Modify", the code opens - however any attempt to save creates a local .SQL file.  How can I save these changes to the stored procedure on the server?

How Do I Edit/modify A Stored Procedure?

Nov 12, 2007

Hi,

I'm from Argentina. I'm not an expert at all in SQL, I know very little about it. I've read in MSDN Library that in order to edit a stored procedure I must right-click the procedure to modify, and then click Design.

I'm using SQL Server Management Studio (not Express) and I don't see any "design" option. I do see a "modify" option. I clicked there and modified just a number I wanted to. Once modified I clicked on the X button to shut the file hoping the system would ask me if I wanted to save the changes made. When I clicked "yes" the file saved into "my documents > sql management studio > proyects".

I checked the original Store Procedure file inside "Programmability > Stored Procedures" and obviously it wasn't altered. I have now a file called "SQLQuery31" in "my documents > sql management studio > proyects" that seems to have the modification made.

Why do I have it there (inside My Documents) instead of modifying the original one? What must I do to get that stored procedure modified?

Thanks from Argentina !!
