Connection To MSDE From WebMatrix

Feb 22, 2005

Hi,

I've just started to learn ASP.net using Scott Mitchell's book:ASP.NET in 24 hours. But i've got a little problem in the database section.
I couldn't connect with a MSDE from webmatrix using sql server authentication even the username and password are correct.
The error message :
"unable to connect to the database server:Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason:not associated with a trusted SQL server connection".
What does it mean? Have any of you ever had this kind of problem?
Thank you for helping me.

Regards,
tom

Problem Making Sql Database Connection In Deployed Site

Dec 12, 2007

VWD 2005 Express. Visual Basic.  Sql Server 2005.  I am trying to establish a connection to a SQL database.  The connection (and all other database reads and writes) work fine in debug and in "view in browser" from VWD.  I am running the VWD on the same server that hosts the site.  When on my server (Windows 2003 Server) under IIS, the connection attempt times out.
Below is the code that is failing (only on the server when deployed):
Private Shared Sub OpenConn(ByVal cmd As SqlCommand, ByVal Success As Boolean)
Dim conn As New SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("GoodNews_IntranetConnectionString").ToString)
'The connection string resolves to ("Data Source=HQSERVERHQSERVER;Initial Catalog=GoodNews_Intranet;Integrated Security=True"
Try
conn.Open()
cmd.Connection = conn
Success = TrueCatch ex As Exception
Success = False
End Try
End Sub

SSIS-problems Making A Dynamic Flat File Connection String

May 8, 2007

Hello.

I have packages that must generate log errors dynamically including time of execution and the name of the task.

I make it changing the properties of the connection inserting two expressions.

1.-I alter the File Usage Type to 1 to generate this files.
2.- I alter the connection string as: @[User::myvariable] +"constant_description"+ time description+ +".txt"

The time description is :
(DT_STR,40,1252) DAY (GETDATE())+"-"+(DT_STR,40,1252) MONTH( GETDATE())+"-"+(DT_STR,40,1252) YEAR( GETDATE())+" + REPLACE( (DT_STR,10,1252) (DT_DBTIME) GETDATE(),":","_")
But it is not the problem

In those packages I have one connector for all the tasks and in execution time it creates one file for each of the tasks.

The problem is the way I insert in the filename the task name.

I have a pre-execute event handler in each task that modifies a string variable( myvariable) appending the task name. When I execute de package it works great but when I only execute a task, the program do not enter in the event and do not put the task’s name.

How can I put that name without using that handler? There is another handler can I use to do it that happens before the system generates the new file name and after pre-execute? Anyone knows another way to do this kind of things?

Making SQL 2005 Developer Accept The Connection String For SQL Express Edition

Feb 18, 2007

Hi, I have installed on my laptop SQL server 2005 Developer edition, I can change ANY of the settings of the SQL server and OS.

I am writing code with a team using continuous integration where the connection string is the following:
"Provider=SQLNCLI;Server=.SQLEXPRESS;Database=Secret;Trusted_Connection=Yes;"

is there a way (create an alias,rename server, other?) to make my local dev SQL server accept the connection string above, as at the moment I have to rename the connection string every time before checking in code and after downloading the latest version from the code repository.

any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

MSDE And WebMatrix

Jul 1, 2004

Hi,

I'm still fairly green when it comes to ASP.NET and SQL Server, but I have written my share of cool applications (for personal use), using MS ACCESS. Needless to say, I'm growing beyond the limitations of ACCESS.
Since I don't have the cash to spend on SQL Server, I downloaded WebMatrix and MSDE. I can connect and create databases with no problems.
I just have a basic question:
Is it possible to use SQL Server Authentication with MSDE, or is it limited to Windows Authentication?
If there's a way, how would I go about it?

Thank you :-)

Using WebMatrix With SQL Express

Dec 22, 2004

I'm trying to learn a little C#, and SQL using SQL Express, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.951, and Web Matrix v0.6 buld 812 with .Net Framework v2.0.40507.42.

Does Web Matrix and .Net v2 work with SQL Express ?

sqlcmd and xm work allow me to select from my table okay, but cannot
do so using my aspx SQL code. It appears the SQLConnection is the
culprit:

SqlConnection c = new SqlConnection("server=localhost;Trusted_Connection=Yes;database=test");

(I have tried adding uid=;pwd=; and still get same error.)

Next line of code after connection is:

SqlDataAdapter co = new SqlDataAdapter("select field1 from testtable", c);

Note that error message below refers to line 18, co.Fill..., but I believe its
theSQLConnection code that is failing.

Always get error: Server Error in '/' Application.

WebMatrix And MSDE Connecting Problem

Nov 8, 2003

Hello,

I have downloaded WebMatrix/NET.Framework and it works well.
Unfortunatelly I have problem with connecting to MSDE.
I've installed the new version (sql2ksp3a) like they say:

setup.exe INSTANCENAME=my_inst_name DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SAPWD=my_pass
SECURITYMODE=SQL

The MSDE works ok (I can connect from a commercial programs - for example
'MSDE Manager') and seems to be ok.
But when I try to connect from Web Matrix I get the error:
"Unable to connect to database, Invalid connection connection Open, Invalid
instancename".

I put all the parameters correct:
user: sa, auth.type: SQL, server: my_pc_namemy_instance_name

By the way the instance name and my PC name is the same. Could it be the
reason ?

Please help,
greetings to all

Display Data Using Mxdatagrid Or Datagrid In Webmatrix

Feb 24, 2004

what i'm trying to do is simply display the contents of the sqldata to verify that it works. and it doesn't. i have created a simple database named 'test' and table 'list' with fields: 'name' and 'id'. i have made 3 records as follows:

NAME ID
name1 1
name2 2
name3 3

what i did is connect to the database, click and drag it over to the canvas and codes were generated. if i run it, by default it should show all the contents of the table, correct? well, it isn't. i've tried it using a datagrid and it still doesn't work.

is there an access problem with the database? or, what settings to have to make/change in my sql server? by the way, i have MSDE.

Making Database Changes Without Logging In To The Server.

May 1, 2008

Hi All,

I am a bit new to using MS-SQL, up till now my main adminstration was in Oracle.

I have a question, my developers make changes to my MS-SQL databases, however, they always login as a local admin or use their domain WIndows accounts - with the given privileges. Then they amend the database.
My idea is to avoid logging into an MS-SQL server without using a Remote Desktop. So they will need some kind of a client.

What is your experience and what would be the best way to do this? Meaning, what software can I use that does not require a license fee?

With Oracle I can install the Oracle client which has an SQLPLUS to login remotely. Does MS-SQL have something similar?

Thanks in advance.

I did use Google to search, I also have an MS-SQL Developer Edition, but this seems to come with another server itself.

Regards,
Richard.

Making Calculations In A Business Layer Vs Sql Server

Jan 29, 2008

Lead information fields (name, address, etc.)

promo_ID: the id of the web form that site visitors filled out to send us their information
PPC_source: If this lead is a result of a Pay-per-click campaingwe capture the name of the search engine
Status_ID: Shows if the lead has been contacted, quoted, sold, bad lead, etc.
I was asked to come up with a summary report calculating the number of leads under each status ID - for each PPC_source
Example:

Total leads   |

Google   |

Yahoo

Status = pending

Status = contacted

Status = quoted

Status = Sold

Looping over each record (12,000 and counting) to get the sums of each status for each pay-per-click campaign takes a while (not all campaigns / status are listed above).
The question: Is it better to retrieve all records in a dataset and do the math in the business layer or is there a way to do the math in a SQL Procedure, or function.
Thanks.

Problem Making Oracle Linked Server Work

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all,I set up our Oracle Financials as a linked server to one of my SQLServer boxes. On running a test query, I got the following errormessage:OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' supplied inconsistent metadata for a column.Metadata information was changed at execution time.OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error: Column 'TEST_NUM'(compile-time ordinal 2) of object '"MYUSER"."TEST_LINK"' was reportedto have aDBTYPE of 130 at compile time and 5 at run time].The Oracle datatype of the column with the supposedly inconsistentmetadata was NUMBER, which according to the Oracle OLE DB documentationactually maps to 139. 130 is a null-terminated unicode characterstring, 5 is a float, and 139 is a variable-length, exact numeric valuewith a signed scale value. Oracle NUMBER is an all-purpose numerictype, apparently they use that instead of int, float, etc. The Oracleguy used it for this column in the test table because in OF it is usedin pretty much every table. (For starters it is the datatype of theiridentity columns.)There is something in the OLE DB spec about all datatypes having to beable to be expressed as DBTYPE_WSTR (130), but what I don't get is thatI can connect to the same Oracle instance using VB6 code and theMSDAORA provider and there is no problem at all interpreting the NUMBERcolumns. So why does it work from VB and not as a linked server? Andmuch more importantly, HOW DO I MAKE THE LINKED SERVER WORK?TIA

SQL Server 2008 :: Making Use Of A Large Transaction File To Delete Records?

Jun 5, 2015

Currently we has a database of size about 300G. Because our backup system failed some time past we were left with a transaction log file which grew to about 160G. However our backups are working again and everything is working fine. My understanding is that now the transaction log file is practically empty but the capacity remains at 160G.

When you delete records the deleted transactions are going to get logged to the transaction file. My understanding is when a backup is done these transactions get discarded out of the transaction file.

could I make use of this relatively large transaction file and start deleting transactions without out actually adding to the transaction file size.

The plan is to delete records from logging tables that are not referenced to by any other table without this increasing the transaction log file.For example over a period of a few weeks we can delete a chunk of records from a table. Then after it has completed a backup we can delete another chunk of records out of this table until we have got the table down to the records that we now need.Will this work?

Making Managed Code Calls Inside SQL Server In Context Of The Client

Aug 17, 2006

Dear all,

I am very new to the subject of writing CLR code inside SQL Server, so I apologise if my questions seem naive.

I have a requirement to populate an asp.net 2.0 GridView control with data columns, some of which are directly from a SQL Server 2005 database, but some of which are calculated by calling CLR methods passing the values from the database columns to those methods.

However, the methods I need to call only make sense in the process context of the client web site which is calling the stored procedure which I want to write to return the data columns.

In effect, I want to be able to make a remote procedure call from within the SQL Server CLR code to the methods available in the client process.

Is this possible? If so, could someone please refer me to an example of how to do it.

If it can be done, it opens up lots of very cool possibilities!

Thanks.

SQL Server 2008 :: Failed To Acquire Connection (Local Server Connection)

May 5, 2014

Occasionally I'm seeing the following error when tranlog or full backup maintenance plan is executing.

Failed-1073573396) Failed to acquire connection "Local server connection". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.

What is strange is that it goes away without any action from myself. We have a tranlog backup that is scheduled every hour. I had this error happen once in the middle of the night. It looks like the job was running fine because almost all the backups are there. I've searched and not found a resolution to this error. I checked the event log and don't see any issues and even tried rebuilding the maintenance plans.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Making Single Subnet Cluster Multi-subnet

Aug 18, 2015

We have a SQL 2014 AlwaysOn availability group running on two Windows 2012 R2 servers that are in the same subnet. We created a new server in a second subnet, installed SQL, joined the server to the Windows cluster, added a new IP resource for the new cluster, and performed the other remaining steps to add a new AG replica to the SQL instance on this new server. When we try to move the core cluster resources to the new node to test failover, we get an error. Here's the command we've been using:

Move-ClusterGroup "Cluster Group" -Node node3

and it returns the error: The operation failed because either the specified cluster node is not the owner of the group, or the node is not a possible owner of the group...I've checked the ownership of the cluster groups and the cluster resources and it looks like they are set appropriately:

>Get-ClusterGroup | Get-ClusterOwnerNode
Cluster Object Owner Nodes
---------------- ---------------
Available Storage {}
Cluster Group {node1,node2,node3}
SQLAG {node1,node2,node3}

[code]....

We've double-checked that all IP resources are in the right subnets and that the dependencies for the Cluster Name resource and the Listener Name resource are set appropriately. I'm not sure what else to check since the PowerShell commands seem to indicate that node3 is an owner of the appropriate resources. What other things need to be checked or if the ownership being checked isn't the same as what PowerShell is checking?

Connection Strings, Trusted-connection VS Username-password, SQL Server 2005 Express

Mar 9, 2007

All --
Please help.
I have some questions about connection strings.

BACKGROUND...

Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005.
Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string.
Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference.
Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.

QUESTIONS...
(A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean?
(B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string?
(C) Are there any alternatives?
(D) What do you suggest?

Please advise.
Thank you.

Jdbc Refuses Connection With 'user Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection' Message

Jul 10, 2007

When using jdbc with IntegratedSecurity, I run into this problem when the machine is not part of a domain & gets its IP address via dhcp. Is this expected behavior or a bug in the jdbc driver.

The SQLServer and client application are installed on the same machine and a local admin is logged in, running the client app.

If I change one of the two parameters mentioned above, the connection can be established leading me to believe this may be intentional for security issues. Am I correct?
