Manage Indexes In Sql 2005

Jun 5, 2007

Hi,

I'm currently migrating to Sql 2005 from 2000 and have a quick question about indexes.

In 2000 i used to click on Table > All Tasks > Manage Indexes... to view and create all my table indexes. There doesn't seem to be anything similar in 2005 Management Studio. I thought it was under Table > Modify but there's nothing there for indexes. I've had to create all my indexes manually through t-sql but this doesn't help when needing to view and manage current indexes.

Can anyone help me on this?

SQL Server 2014 :: Indexes And Views - Manage Date Filtering Within A Query?

May 21, 2014

I have a dynamic SQL query that uses various indexes and views.

When a user wants to filter records based on last one day, last one week, last 30 days ...etc.. i use the following code:

@date is an integer.

begindate is datetime format.

begindate > cast(((select dateadd(d,@Date,GETDATE()))) as varchar(20))

The above code slows my query performance by at least 400%!

Would it be faster to add a computed column to my table, using the suggested method in the link below?

[URL] ....

Then i could add an indexed view to improve performance, or can this be done another way?

Removal Of Selected Indexes / Script Index Create For List Of Indexes

Jul 1, 2014

I'm working to improve performance on a database I've inherited, and there are several thousand indexes. I've got a list of ones which should definitely exist within the database, and I'm looking to strip out all the others and start fresh, though this list is still quite large (1000 or so).

Is there a way I can remove all the indexes that are not in my list without too much trouble? I.e. without having to manually go through them all individually. The list is currently in a csv file.

I'm looking to either automate the removal of indexes not in the list, or possibly to generate the Create statements for the indexes on the list and simply remove all indexes and then run these statements.

As an aside, when trying to list all indexes in the database, I've found various scripts to do this, but found they all seem to produce differing results. What is the best script to list all indexes?

Indexes & SQL 2000 -&> SQL 2005 Upgrade

Jun 17, 2008

Hi all,

Recently, I upgraded one of our database servers from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. At the moment, all the databases are in 80 compatibility mode. I upgraded them based on the false pretenses that I could perform online reindexing right off the bat. Apparently, that isn't the case, and it requires switching to 90 compatibility. My question is if I switch to 90, will all indexes be invalidated/unusable? Or will I be able to switch to 90 and perform the online reindexing right away with no downtime?

We have a few 24/7 production VLDB's in the mix (one of which is on this newly upgraded server), and only reasonable downtime is possible. The largest window of downtime I have is about 10 PM - 5 AM with prior notice.

The upgrade was performed using SAN-based LUN's with a detach/reattach.

Thanks,

Matt

Sqlserver 2005: Indexes On Raid-0?

Aug 20, 2006

I'm currently planning disk layouts and use for a new version of ourdatabase. The current version has all data and indexes in the defaultfilegroup, placed on one big raid-5 array(6 drives) along with thetransaction log. Performance is not the best, as you may imagine...Next week we will add another 14 drives and organize them in differentcombos of raid-10 and raid-1, and then create several filegroups andplace tables and index data on separate physical drives. Most of the database will be placed on a raid-10 array, and some parts(tables/indexes/translog) will have their own raid-1 drives.I've been playing with the rather incorrect idea of using raid-0 insteadof raid-1 on one or two of the new disk arrays we're adding and thenplace (some) indexes on those drives. The theory is that even if one drive fails, the db will stay up and itwill be easy to recreate the indexes when the disk has been replaced.(We will have one hot spare available)Does anyone know how well sqlserver 2005 handles disk loss in such aconfiguration?Any other comments? ;-)boa

Indexes Messed After 2000 -&> 2005 Db Move

Jun 13, 2008

Recently moved a couple of dbs from SQL 2000 -> SQL 2005 (different machine). Just restored the dbs on the new server from a full backup of the old one. Everything is fine but...

Some queries are returning out-of-order results (for records added since the migration). I tracked this down to the indexes. I completely rebuilt and reorganized the indexes (online) through the manager interface. This helped provide correct ordering for existing records, but new records added since the re index are still out-of-order.

Looking for a way to permanently fix the indexes so I don't have to constantly rebuild them.

Thanks.

SSIS 2000 To 2005 Database Transfer Lost All Primary Keys, Identities And Indexes

Hi everyone, I am trying to upgrade a 2000 DB to 2005 with SSIS Database Transfer.

I finally got it to work with an online transfer but the destination database has no primary keys, indexes or identity columns from the source DB.

What am I missing?

What other ways are there to upgrade a SS2000 DB to 2005?

Thank you.

A Question About Clustered Indexes Forcing Rebuild Of Non-clustered Indexes.

Sep 18, 2007

So I'm reading http://www.sql-server-performance.com/tips/clustered_indexes_p2.aspx and I come across this:
When selecting a column to base your clustered index on, try to avoid columns that are frequently updated. Every time that a column used for a clustered index is modified, all of the non-clustered indexes must also be updated, creating additional overhead. [6.5, 7.0, 2000, 2005] Updated 3-5-2004
Does this mean if I have say a table called Item with a clustered index on a column in it called itemaddeddate, and several non-clustered indexes associated with that table, that if a record gets modified and it's itemaddeddate value changes, that ALL my indexes on that table will get rebuilt? Or is it referring to the table structure changing?
If so does this "pseudocode" example also cause this to occur:
sqlstring="select * from item where itemid=12345"
rs.open sqlstring, etc, etc, etc
rs.Fields("ItemName")="My New Item Name"
rs.Fields("ItemPrice")=1.00
rs.Update
Note I didn't explicitly change the value of rs.fields("ItemAddedDate")...does rs.Fields("ItemAddedDate")=rs.Fields("ItemAddedDate") occur implicitly, which would force the rebuild of all the non-clustered indexes?

Automatically Script Out A Table && Indexes - Script Needed (2005)

Jul 10, 2007

I'm trying to automate an auto-export of a table on a daily basis, using BCP. I'm using native format for the BCP because the text inone of the fields can encompass pretty much any ASCII characters, andusing the other options (including the null terminator, stuff like|||, etc) hasn't worked particularly well. So, I'm archiving out a table on a daily basis. I want to script outthe table at the same time; that way, if there are any table changes,an import will still work. How can I do this? I've been digging through google for scripts withno luck. Ideally I'd like a table-creation script, along with CREATEINDEX statements.Anybody have a script handy for this? I know it can be done by usingthe system tables, but I'm hoping to avoid reinventing the wheel. Thanks in advance.Michael

Manage SQL Express Over Lan

Oct 27, 2006

Hey EveryoneI have a desktop machine and a laptop machine.  Both have XP Pro.  I prefer to code on my laptop, but I want to use my desktop machine as a home server/development environment because its always on.  I have IIS (HTTP and FTP), .NET 2.0, my mp3 server, etc up and running just fine on my desktop. When I'm working on an application, I access the site with VWD through a network share.  It's worked great so far.  What I haven't been able to do, however, is connect to the database with VWD or Management Studio Express.  I don't even really know where to begin with this one.  What I don't want to do is open this up to the internet.  I'd like to just keep it accessible from the LAN (the database, not the website)I'm new to database stuff, and I don't really know where to look to figure out how to do this.  Basically, I want to have the same functionality with VWD or Management Studio that I would have if I was physically on the machine with the SQL Express server. If anyone can provide some advice, I'd really appreciate it.Thanks!Brandon

How Do I Manage 100.000 Actions A Day ?

Mar 27, 2008

In a previous application i stored about 100.000 actions ( coming from an external system )in an access database for each day. Therefore i created everyday a new accessdatabase to have enough performance. Each month i copied automatically all databases in a new 'month' map as a backup.

The goal of the application is the view all actions of one day of week in one grid. This is a kind of history of the external system.

I'm afraid the application will become to slow if i save all actions in one database. ( after 1 month i will have 3.000.000 actions.

How this is done in an sql server ?
Do i have to use a different kind of method ?

How Do I Manage This Mess? Thanks!

May 24, 2007

Say for example I have the following 2 database tables, the first one contains the old employee data, and has the fields shown below:
oldEmployeeID
FirstName
LastName
DateOfBirth
HiringDate
TerminationDate
and another one containing the new employee data with similar fields but instead of oldEmployeeID, it is showing the newEmployeeID.
During the conversion process, something were messed up and instead of putting in the original hiring date of the workers into the new employee database, the conversion date was put in, which, depending on the mood of HR ladies, could be any date, and at the same time, of course, new employee join the company, and we assume their hiring dates were entered correctly. On top of that, there are some employee who were terminated before the conversion took place but we still need to keep a record of that.
And I created a third table, say, emplyeeAll with similar fields to the employee data tables.
So here is what I need to do: if the firstName, lastName and DateOfBirth in the old employee data table and the new employee data table matches, I would assume they are the same employee, hence I would put the information for the employee obtained from the new employee data table to the employeeAll table, with the Hiring Date changed to the Hiring Date of the old employee data table (and do not copy the record from the old employee table to prevent duplicates), otherwise, I would simply copy and paste the data in new and old employee table to my employeeAll table.
I know this is really confusing, but...well...hope you know what I am saying...
Is it possible to have a SQL statement for all these? If so, how should the statement looks like?

Thanks a lot!

Regards,
Anyi

SQL Server 2008 :: Logic To Rebuild Only Clustered Indexes / Skipping To Rebuild Non Clustered Indexes In Same Table

I have a requirement to only rebuild the Clustered Indexes in the table ignoring the non clustered indexes as those are taken care of by the Clustered indexes.

In order to do that, I have taken the records based on the fragmentation %.

But unable to come up with a logic to only consider rebuilding the clustered indexes in the table.

create table #fragmentation
(
FragIndexId BigInt Identity(1,1),
--IDENTITY(int, 1, 1) AS FragIndexId,
DBNAME nvarchar(4000),
TableName nvarchar(4000),

Can I Manage MSDE With SSMS??

Jul 26, 2007

Hello,We have an XP workstation containing a very important MSDE-basedapplication. Its MSDE database isn't likely to change for quite awhile. The app contains an internal backup method (File, Backup, Backup) andan auxiliary app/script for shrinking the database and logs. I wouldlike to automate the backup and shrinking so end users don't have toremember to do them. The workstation has a static IP so it can go out to the Internet whennecessary. The workstation is presently not joined to the domain.1. Can I install SSMS Express *only* as a local app (without SQLExpress 2005) and thus use SSMS to set up nightly backups and periodicshrink database/logs jobs??2. We have SSMS running on SQL 2005 server box in the domain. If Ijoin the workstation only to the domain (local account logon is notchanged, still used), could I use SSMS from the SQL 2005 box?? Would Ineed a domain login on the XP box to make this work??Thank you, Tom
