Managing SQL Server Remotely
Jun 26, 2007
I've combed through SQL Help to find the answer to my question but I think it's telling me it can't be done. I work both from an office with my servers and from home. When I'm at home I would like to access my SQL server remotely using a tool such as MS SQL Server Management Studio. But it appears there is no way to access my SQL Server for management purposes using Management Studio over a remote internet connection. I can access the server using Management Studio while I'm on the internal office network but not from home.
Has anyone been able to do this or might recommend a third party tool as robust as Management Studio?
Thanks

Hi.
I have a website and database using membership which is running successfully on my remote hosting server.
When I go online, I can add a new member because my login page contains a login .NET component.
Question: Is there anyway I can, as the adminstrator, manage the security settings for the members (delete members, define/assign roles etc.) on line?
Or do I have to do it locally on my PC, and then update the remote database? (hopefully not...)
Thanks in advance,
Garrett

Hi, I just start using MSSQL server 2005, I already install vss studio
2005 so SQL server 2005 is already installed by default (express
edition).
But unlike SQL server 2000, I coultn't find any tools similiar to "sql
entreprise manager". I was able to create a new database only from
server explorer tools in VSS. But pretty strange that this database act
like a microsoft access database (creating a database file on my
app_data folder). (I am sorry I am new in SQL server 2005
ExpressEdition ).
My question :
1. is that (above) really how mssql server 2005 works?
2. how to create a new user for this database? (example user: sa password: "admin")
thanks

Hi,
I have to manage many SQL Server databases on several servers. How can I manage the jobs, backups and the space on the disc without going to each and every server and database and job? Is there any script to run this? It will be very helpful if you can provide me the sample script or point me to any web site where I can get the info/script for this. Thanks in advance...

Hello,
I have SQL Server 2000 and 2005 running on the same server. My current system is in SQL Server 2000 and the new system is in SQL Server 2005. My users will be using SQL Server 2000 for the most part, But for the part the processes that have been migrated to 2005, they will be using SQL Server 2005 as well. The database schema is different on both servers eventhough the data will be similar in most respects.
Is there is a way through which any data that is inserted/updated in SQL Server 2000 via content Management System/ manually/ via a batch job, the data is automatically populated in SQL Server 2005 tables or vice versa?
Please advice at the earliest.
Thanks.

I have a windows 2003 server which has SQL 2005 Express with advanced services installed on it. Then a few weeks back the company purchased SQL server Standard Edition which comes with SQL Server Management Studio (which has more features than SQL Server Management Studio Express currently installed on the server where sql express is running)I have been trying to schedule a maintanance plan on the SQLExpress Instance database from the SQL Server Management Studio that came with the standard version of sql but i have not been able to have all SQL Server Management Studio functionality available when connected to the SQLExpress instance. So is there a way i can connect to the Express Instance from management studio(that comes with the standard edition of sql) and have all its functions available when working with a SQL express database. Or i must upgrade the express database?

Hi
I have heard a lot of people saying that they administe the SQL Server remotely , I mean sitting in one city , they work on the SQL Server in another city.
How is this actually achieved . Is it that the SQL Box is given a real Ip & then they connect it though the internet, but then this would not be safe , as the SQL box would be on the real Ip.
Could some one please let me knw the ways (solutions) to access & adminster a SQL Server remotely. (Not on ones LAN ) ...
Thanks & Regards

Hello, I am new to SQL Server Express, I am trying to upscale my database/Application to a SQL Server/Application with C#. All I want is to create a SQL Server service on my Office Server and manage it via my station. But I keep getting this error:
TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to SERVER.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060)
The thing is that I went on the Server in the Surface Area Manager, I allowed IP and and Name pipes on network. Still does not work.
When I open the Manager from my station, I see the Server but keep getting this error.
Can someone please help me. Thank you

I'm new to MSSQL. At my work place, I'm using MSSQL and using SQL Query Analyzer to run queries and view all my database tables and structures.
Now, I can work remotely at home for the time being. So, how do I get SQL Query Analyzer and be able to connect remotely to my database at work?
I've downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express and it comes with SQL Server Management Studio, which looks similar to SQL Query Analyzer. The problem is though, how would I remotely connect to my database server at work? Is it possible to do this using SQL Server 2005 express?
One thing I was advised to do was configure the TCP/IP Port number from 1433 to 1435. However, I do not see an option to configure that nor do not know how to connect remotely (I do have the IP, User, and Pass).

Hello,
I'm using a Windows XP Home laptop to connect to a network of one of my customers. The administrator of the customer has given me a username and password for a VPN connection. I've got the VPN connection working and I can ping the SQL Express server.
This server is using Windows Authentication. For the users of my VB application we have added a group to the Active Directory and added this group as a user to the SQL Express Server. This works and the users can access the database from within the application. The SQL Express Server allows remote connections and the browser service is also running.
I would like to use the SQL management Studio Express on my laptop to access the remote SQL Express server and manage the database files. To do this I first connect to the remote LAN using VPN and add the address of the SQL EXpress server in the field 'Server name' of the 'Connect to server' screen. The authentication field is set to Windows Authentication. However the username is greyed out and states the login for the SQL Express server on my laptop: laptopusername. How can I correct this?
I don't know whether the username of the VPN connection is in the Active Directory. Should this be the case and should this user also be added to the login/user of the SQL Express server? And how do I get the Management Studio to connect to the remote server? Could XP Home be the bottleneck as it cannot logon to a domain?
Anyone any ideas?

I had asked a question last week and I realized that I had phrased it in a misleading way. Within a lab environment at my company, we are experimenting w/ accessing remote SQL data files stored separately on another machine from the SQL server itself (whether it be another client or server).
The experiment is this: You have one client machine accessing a SQL server via Enterprise Manager. The datafiles that you are trying to access are stored on another machine that does not have SQL Server installed. This remote machine only has the datafiles.
Can one map a static path via UNC from the SQL server to the datafiles on the remote machine and then access these datafiles (as long as the user's account has the appropriate permissions to the remote machine)? To my understanding, within SQL server you can only access datafiles that are stored locally on the SQL server itself.
The other thing that I was wondering was if the type of user account had some significance in this situation. More than likely, a local user account would not be able to access the remote machine w/ the datafiles even if the SQL server could map an UNC path and retain it. A domainuser account might be able to do this though.
Any help that you could provide would be appreciated.

We recently moved our SQL Server 7.0 database from one machine to another, and I think the guys who did it didn't do things quite right...
None of the DTS packages work anymore....
the little lines (for lack of better terms here..) that contain the SQL statements and such, well, if I try to edit the properties of them, I get an error that says this:
Error Source: Microsoft OLD DB Provider for SQL Server
Error Description:[DBMSSOCN]General network error. Check your network documentation.
My guess is that the things are looking for Server X and now they're on Server Y. Problem is, that when I try to edit the properties of the 'little line'...that error pops up...and then the window that comes up with the tabs across the top of it that lets me enter the SQL statement disappears right away and I can't make the changes?!?
Other question:
The SQL Server is now on a machine that's like 3000 miles away. Right now I use pcAnyWhere to log into it and use the SQL Enterprise Manager there.
Well, I've got SQL Server installed on this machine here...surely there is a way to have this SQL Enterprise Manager here connect to the remote SQL Server so I can play with it that way instead of the pcanywhere mess...right? Seems logical....
Thanks......

Hi,
I have 2 machines using SQL Server 2005 developer edition. I am able to connect to each of them locally without any problem. But when I try using one SQL Server as server and another machine's SQL Server as client, I am not able to connect. I get the following error:
TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------
Cannot connect to ServerName.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233).
I have checked for "Allow Remote Connections" property turned on for TCP/IP.
I am using SQL Server Authetication mode.
I have checked for SQL Server Browser service to be running.
Firewall on the server is also allowing the sql server traffic to pass.
But still not able to connect. What could be the problem connecting the 2 machines.
Any help is appreciated.

hi. im still a bit new in handling SQL and im having problems connecting to a remote sql server 2005. i have already configured the surface area to accept remote connections and am using the connection string:
SqlConnection lasConnection = new SqlConnection("user id = sa;" +
"password = 12345; server = Naomi;" +
"Trusted_Connection = yes;" +
"database = LAS;" +
"connection timeout=30");
and it returns an error of "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'NAOMIGuest' "
however, when i use the application on the same computer as the server, it has no problems connecting at all. could please point me to the right direction on how i should face this problem?

I had a big problem on connecting sqlserver remotely from other machines on the network .....
From any computer in the network i wanna to register the instance of the sqlserver from the enterprise manager ..... the server instance doesn't appear within the available sqlserver list (the servername which equal to my machine is the only one that appear) ..... when i manualy write the servernamealias manually and i choose the connection type and then i write sqlserver username and password and then finish he give a message to me that access denied or sql server doesn't exist ... !!
by the way from the local machine i registered the local instance of sqlserver successfully and successfully i access the Databases .....
To be noted:
I previously uninstalled this alias and i then i reinstalled it again with the same name and i attached the previously exists Databes.
in the same time i installed on the same machine sqlserver 2005 connectivity clients not the server itself.

I've been trying to configure remote connections to my sql server express to no avail.
First here are some constants to clear some things up:
- OS: Windows XP Pro
- SQL Express version: April CTP release
- Windows Firewall: disabled (to avoid any problems there)
- Network type: two computers connected a router.
- Router firewall: Enabled (I may be wrong but the router firewall only blocks external traffic, so I left it on.)
First, I configured my SQL server to allow remote connections in the SQL Surface Area Configuration. (Set it to both TCP/IP and named pipes)
Second, I enabled and configured sql server browser.
Third, I enabled TCP/IP and named pipes in the 'Protocols for SQL Express' option of the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
According to http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx
I have done everything I need to (including edit the registry to enable the SQL Server Browser service) and the error I continue to get is:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)"
So I tinkered and had no success in messing with anything that would fix it. Although, ***when I browsed for network servers on different machine, the server instance DID show up in the list***. So I find it odd that it can find the instance when browsing, but fails to 'find' it when making a connection.
So I didn't stop there, I decided to try the non-sql server browser method of remotely connecting: specifying the IP.
I went back to the blog of instructions referenced above and re-did the steps, this time specifying a TCP Port for the server instance and then after specifying the port on the remote computer connection string, and attempting to connect, I get this error:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060)"
I've done all I know how, read all the possible blogs I can, and nothing's come up. If anyone can shed some light on me, I'd pay you 1 billion pretend dollars. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

We have a package (which uses SQL Server Destination Task) imported in the SQL Server. Is it possible to invoke this SSIS package from a remote App Server through C# .NET.
We would like to execute the SSIS package in the SQL Server itself and pass on the results of execution to the calling C#.NET application via the output variables declared in the SSIS package.

I would like to build a C# program to connect to a remote SQL2005 server.
Then call the server SSIS to run a .exe in the server (The .exe file already exist in the SQL2005 server)
I have refer to the following webpage http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/CallSSISFromCSharp.asp
I can connect to the SQL server by the "LoadFromSqlServer" method with SQL server login A/C.
However, the SSIS failed. I believe it should be due to the window authentication issue. During SSIS execution, the SQL server login A/C does not have the access right to run the .exe file
Could anyone suggest the solution?
Thanks.
