As part of a project, I'm not allowed to use foreign keys, well can't. But I have a problem with this master detail relationship (and a very simple one too). Tables to begin with: Invoice: invoiceid : bigint indentity autoincrement primarykey Detail: invoiceid: bigint - detailnumber:bigint - desc : char20 Okay - I want to set these two tables up such than when I create a new invoice, and subsequently get the new invoiceid, and I start to add detail records to the detail table, I want the detailnumber to autoincrement when I do an SQL Insert. Right now I have detailnumber as the primary key, so when you view the detail records, it looks like: (invoiceid, detailnumber, desc) 1,1,text - 1,2,text - 1,3,text - 2,4, text on another invoice - 3,5, text I want it to work like: (invoiceid, detailnumber, desc) 1,1,text - 1,2,text - 1,3,text - 2,1, text on another invoice - 3,1, text where the invoiceid and the detail number make up the primary key. I seem to recall you could do this is PHP before it had foreign keys & such, and I'm completely drawing a blank on this. BTW - I'm using enterprise manager to set this up, but I can use QA with a sample script to acheive the same. I realize this may be (and probably is) off-topic here, but I can't figure out where to ask. Thanks in advance.
I am struggling trying to clean some data and identify duplicate records. I used fuzzy grouping in SSIS and provided back a series of groups. The issue is some of the individual records can appear in multiple groups (so in reality the groups should be combined). This is best explained with an example:

I only choose 2222 as the surviving key because it was the smallest number. I really do not care which number remains as long as it is the same across.
I tried playing with self joins between the tables but have had no success.

Now, I checked and verified that my backup version of SQL Server is the same as the version installed on the computer I'm restoring too.
I have SQL Server on a production machine that I backed up and want to test a full restore on a dev machine to make sure it will work when I need it to.
Now that I've run the restore command on my tape backup and go to restart the SQL server service I receive:
Configuration block version 0 is not a valid version number. SQL Server is exiting. Restore the master database or reinstall.
I'm afraid I don't understand why this is happening. If the builds are the same, then shouldn't restoring the MASTER database have worked normally and I'd be able to restart the service now?

Using SQL Server Express 2005, I have two databases. AppDB - The main application database.GeoDB - A somewhat static ZIP code / states / other geographic stuff databaseI need to have some foreign key columns in tables in AppDB reference columns in the GeoDB database tables. Eventually other application database besides AppDB will be doing the same thing in our infrastructure. After googling and reading for days, here is what I think I know:You cannot create foreign keys that reference tables in another database in SQL Server.You cannot create foreign keys that reference columns in a view, and you definitely cannot make an index on a view that has base tables in another database.You can create a trigger that references tables in another database, but this can be flaky? (nested/recursive trigger problem).SQLServer 2005 supports multiple schemas within the same database. Maybe I should logically separate my databases this way? Seems like it would be a tough solution to manage since I already have some databases live in production that will eventually use this 'static' GeoDB. I'm going through my tables and rewriting them so that I can create relationship-based constraints and create foreign keys among my tables. I didn't have a problem with a few of the tables but I seem to have come across a slightly confusing hiccup.

This statement runs without problems and I Create the relationship with my Users table just fine, having renamed it to teacher_id. I have a 1:n relationship between users and tables AND an n:m relationship because a user can be a student or a teacher, the difference is one field, user_type, which denotes what type of user a person is. In any case, the relationship that's 1:n from users to classes is that of the teacher instructing the class. The problem exists when I run my query for the intermediary table between the class and the gradebook:

I had to to relocate the database log file and I issued an Alter database command but by mistake I put a space in the file name as below. The space is at the beginning file name. Now I am unable get the database loaded to SQL Server. The database has 2 replications configured, so deleting and re-attaching the database means the replication needs to be re-configured. Is there an alternative way to issue a command to update the database FILENAME ? Not sure if this can be edited in master database (sys files).

whenenver i run cold fusion, it automatically gets my tables out of the master database instead of the new one i have created. i've added a user that has a default to the new database instead of the master, but i need to know how to use that new user correctly, and what i will need to do once i start adding more databases so that cold fusion will go to the appropriate database and not to the master.

I have my program running fine in XP Pro OS using a window user "Glen" (Computer administrator) with Administrator rights. This means that I installed VS 2005 using this window user "Glen"
I created another windows user "TestUser" (Limited account) in the same physical PC.
I tried to run the program and on the part that I need to access SQL table, I got the error [CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master']
At the same time while using "TestUser" and running sqlcmd (to check if I can connect to SQL), I also got error HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1.
I read alot on MSDN discussions and related links but it seems that I can't get the solution that I need.
SO HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS :
1. Am I allowed to run my program using user "TestUser" since SQL is installed using "Glen" windows user?
2. Do I need to add access rights to "TestUser" to allow the user to have CREATE rights? (Note : for security reason, I can add other access rights except Administrator)

The facts: 1. there is a CARS database on server 1 (carId, carDescription) 2. there is an issues and problems tracking database on server 2 (problemId, problemDescription) 3. I am supposed to extend the functionality of the issues and problems tracking database to include the cars. i.e. the database on server 2 should look like: (problemID, problemDescription, carId)
The question: Is there a way i can put a foreign key constraint on server2's carID so that i can only input carIDs which are in the CARS table on server1?
The only way i can think of is to make a new table in server1 and just drag a froeign key relationship in enterprise manager's designer, but my boss doesnt want to keep both information on the same db!

I've been trying to export a whole database from one server to another (connected through a local network) but the keys always get lost: when I open the diagrame I can actually see them just before the tables names appear. I've tried inserting the primary keys for each table manually with the export wizard, which took me some time, but no relations were exported. Any way of doing this automatically?
Sometime during the night last night some user account permissions were "lost". Am I right to think that restoring the master database would be the way to go? We have a 2 node 2012 cluster and I stop the cluster resource and start the db in single user mode from the active node. Somehow the sharepoint farm is still trying to connect so I can't get logged in single user. What method could I use to stop users from connecting when I don't have access to the sharepoint farm.
I need help setting up my primary keys for a database table. Suppose I have two tables, as listed below. The first one isa table of students and the course they are enrolled in. I have seen two approaches to primary keys. First one - and it is like default - is to use surrogate key as primary key. For each table I will create some autonumeric field hat cannot be changed once it has value. Some materials refer to this key also as technical primary key. I design my databases this way usually.
The other approach is to create primary key of fields that make primary key on database logical model. This approach is not so popular and has some side effects like a little bit clumpsy looking joins and unconvenient use in applications.
Question: What is the main idea behind second approach? Or how explain their preference database designers who are using second approach?

I set up a basic Transfer Database task (online, copy) to copy a DB. It works great except for the fact that it isn't transferring the PK's and FK's. It also looks like it did not transfer the views. Any idea why? Anything else the Transfer Database task doesn't actually transfer?

Hi, I have a question regarding master database.I know if a master database is corrupt we need to rebuild the master.One of the guys suggested us to maintain a copy of master data file and log file in diffrent directory and when master database is corrupt we can copy the files to the actual location and restart the sql server and this should fix the issue and by this method we can save the time of rebuilding the master database.I don't know if this works.Can anyone please tell me if this works and also disadvantages if any with this method? thanks Mohan
I tried to import a stored procedure from one Master database to another Master database, but it won't allow me. I then tried to copy and paste that system stored procedure on isql, but it still won't allow me.
Why I can do a DTS on other databases, except on Master database? Is there any way around it?
