Memory Errors ?

Hi There
We are running Sql Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP4.
The server has "frozen up" now for the second time in 2 weeks.
What happens is sql server literally dies, you cannot even connect to sql server, but it is running.
What we see are inssuficient memory erros in the event log and the following in the sql log:
BPool::Map: no remappable address found. 2007-08-1
Dynamic Memory Manager: Stolen=92810 OS Reserved=1
Buffer Distribution: Stolen=109139 Free=700 Proced
Global Memory Objects: Resource=1346 Locks=77
All i can find on the internet related to the error is that you must apply SP4 but we already have.
Can anyone help on this issue ? When this happens again how do we diagnose since we cannot even connect to sql server? This is 2000 so no DAC.
The server has 16 Gigs of ram is awe enabled and sql server is allocated 12 Gig. So i am having trouble figuring out what is "stealing" the memory.
Any ideas ?

Here's the deal.....
I was converting a lot of MS Access records to SQL Server (almost 500,000)
and about midway through I got the old MSACCESS.EXE Not Responding. A few
more times through this and SQL Server informed me that I was running out
of locks. I upped the locks from 5000 to 20000, and retried it. I am now
getting errors like "There is insufficient system memory to run this
query". I receive this when I attempt to look at tables, devices, etc. In
SQL Enterprise Manager. I am also not able to run the sp_configure command
or choose configure by right-clicking on the server in Ent. Mgr. I am
running SQL Server 6.5, SP4, on a dual P200 with 256MB RAM. Any help would be
incredibly great.

I am wondering if there is a way to solve a virtual memory error? We randomly get the following error when trying to run sycn over the http websync. Some clients have 512 MB running sql express, others are full instances that have 1.5 GB.
The merge process could not allocate memory for an operation; your system may be running low on virtual memory. Restart the Merge Agent.

Post installation of Hotfix Update 8.00.0679 (for the slammer worm) we've encountered this error on our production server "2003-02-13 09:54:17.14 server Error: 17882, Severity: 18, State: 1
2003-02-13 09:54:17.14 server Error accepting connection request via Net-Library 'SSNETLIB'. Execution continuing..".
This appears to correlate with attempts to access our SQL7 server, which was also patched for the worm (Hotfix 7.00.1030) via any query analyzer linked server reference; in fact the linked server attempt fails on a 'general network failure'.
On the SQL2000 side, the SSNETLIB failure is followed by failures in "Stored function 'xp_enumerrorlogs' in the library 'xpstar.dll' generated an access violation" and then all backups fail on memory allocation failures and major database selects of 100K's records fail on "unable to allocate thread".
Anyone have any thoughts or experiences germane? I'm about to undo the security patch on both servers.

I'm currently experiencing major problems with SSIS when opening and editing large .DTSX package files that contain Exec DTS 2000 Tasks which have the package data loaded internally. I have no issues if I point the task to a .DTS file, or to an actual DTS package on a SQL 2000 server - but if I load the package internally then once the underlying .DTSX file gets over around 17MB or so in size (which doesnt take long making a few edits to even fairly simple packages now and then), I start to experience major issues with VS/BIDS 2005 crashing randomly when I try to perform any action with the package (open, save etc). Things like OutOfMemory exception errors, followed by the properties of Exec DTS 2000 task being deleted, and also sometimes accompanied by messages about the application not being installed properly.
Again its ONLY when the underlying .DTSX file reaches a certain size limit, and only when I've got an Exec DTS 2000 task with the package loaded internally. I've replicated the issue using several different package files on several different machines (even on servers with lots of memory, fwiw).
Can anyone out there help me with this? SSIS - namely SSIS Exec DTS 2000 package tasks - are our lifeblood at my company and this trend of random and serious crashing on large package files is very disturbing to say the least.

I recently updated the datatype of a sproc parameter from bit to tinyint. When I executed the sproc with the updated parameters the sproc appeared to succeed and returned "1 row(s) affected" in the console. However, the update triggered by the sproc did not actually work.
The table column was a bit which only allows 0 or 1 and the sproc was passing a value of 2 so the table was rejecting this value. However, the sproc did not return an error and appeared to return success. So is there a way to configure the database or sproc to return an error message when this type of error occurs?

I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.
I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.
After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:
Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

Hello. I have received the follwoing error upon an attempt to Browse the Cube. All other tabs are functional, including the Calculations tab. We are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and SQL Server 2005 SP2. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
**EDIT** - Have confirmed SP1 for VS2005 is installed both locally and on server, also.
Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (Microsoft Visual Studio)

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

I have a parent package that calls child packages inside a For Each container. When I debug/run the parent package (from VS), I get the following error message: Warning: The Execution method succeeded, but the number of errors raised (3) reached the maximum allowed (1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors.
It appears to be failing while executing the child package. However, the logs (via the "progress" tab) for both the parent package and the child package show no errors other than the one listed above (and that shows in the parent package log). The child package appears to validate completely without error (all components are green and no error messages in the log). I turned on SSIS logging to a text file and see nothing in there either.
If I bump up the MaximumErrorCount in the parent package and in the Execute Package Task that calls the child package to 4 (to go one above the error count indicated in the message above), the whole thing executes sucessfully. I don't want to leave the Max Error Count set like this. Is there something I am missing? For example are there errors that do not get logged by default? I get some warnings, do a certain number of warnings equal an error?

Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.
My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?

I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

Hi,
I am going to install SQL Server 2000 (then SQL 2K5) on a Win Server 2K3 with 8 GB of ram, but it will be 16 GB in the near future.
I would like to reserve a fixed memory (for momemt less than 3-4 GB) for SQL Server and the rest for application (virtualization).
Without AWE enabled, max memory for SQL Server 2K5 is 4GB as for SQL Server 2000?
How can I manage and optimize memory keeping in mind AWE. (any doc, website available?)

So I started a new job recently and have noticed a few strange configurations. Typically I would never mess with min memory per query option and index create memory option configuration because i just haven't seen any need to. My typical thought is that if it isn't broke... They have been modified on every single server in my environment.
From Books Online:
• This option is an advanced option and should be changed only by an experienced database administrator or certified SQL Server technician.
• The index create memory option is self-configuring and usually works without requiring adjustment. However, if you experience difficulties creating indexes, consider increasing the value of this option from its run value.

I did a load testing and found the following observations:
1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.
2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory
Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?

If I install SQL 2005 Standard on Windows 2003 Standard, is SQL limited to 4 gigs of physical RAM?
I'm planning a new system that will run SQL 2005 Standard edition on a Windows 2003 Standard platform. The spec calls for 8 GB of RAM. My experience would lead me to suspect I need to install Windows 2003 Enterprise to take advantage of all the installed memory.

I have been receiving 644 errors on an index for one of my tables. We have dropped and rebuilt the index. Even BCP out, drop the table, create the table and BCP in everything and still have problems.
Has anyone else experienced problems with 644 errors? Did you ever determine the cause and are they any preventative ideas?

Cannot add, update, or delete a job(or ists steps or shcedules) that aoriginated from an MSX Server.

Why is this? Any ideas. I checked the sysjobs in the msdb and they have the correct server name for the jobs?

Ok, whenever I try to connect, I get the following Error messages:
"SQL Server Registration failed because of the connection failure displayed below.
SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen (Connect())"
"An Error 1069 occured while performing this service operation on the
MSSQLServer Service"
I even went as far as uninstalling and reinstalling, but to no avail. Does anyone have an idea what's causing this? It was working fine and then all the sudden one day I start getting these messages and it won't work.

I have a dynamics db that is used for archival purposes and it is not used very often. Now that someone decided to get some info out of it it wont let them. when I run dbcc I get the following message:
Msg 5242, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
An inconsistency was detected during an internal operation in database 'PACIF'(ID:12) on page (1:19451). Please contact technical support. Reference number 6.
Msg 8921, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Check terminated. A failure was detected while collecting facts. Possibly tempdb out of space or a system table is inconsistent. Check previous errors.
I was just wondering if this meant anything to any of you? and since all of my backtapes have the same issue, is there any way to fix it?

Running SQL 05 Standard on a Vista box and I have about had it with Vista. Anytime I try to launch Config Manager I get Cannot connect to WMI provider. You do not have permission or the server is unreachable. So try I googled and tried everything I can fine from http://blogs.msdn.com/echarran/archive/2006/01/03/509061.aspx

try to uninstall SQL Server.. NOT - WMI error - try to reinstall over--- NOT WMI error.
What do I need to do to get this working. .this is becoming a serious hinderance to my productivity!!!

what a want to know is if there s a way to log sql server errors on a log file, table, these errors are not sql server logs which already exists, i want to log dead locks, sql server timeout errors vs on sql server or somewhere.
is it possible ?
may i use sql server profiler for that purpose?

We have a box with dual Intel Xeon 3.4GHz processors, and 8GB RAM, OS and Data on separate RAID5 arrays. It runs:
MS Win2k3 Enterprise for the OS,
MS SQLServer 2k Enterprise for DB,
MS SQL Analysis Services for OLAP,
MS SQL Reporting Services for reports distrib,
MS IIS for web hosting,
SPSS OLAPHub for OLAP web UI, and other small stuff...
My question is this: How should the memory be configured? Should we use the OS' /3GB switch or are there enough apps running here for the OS to need 2GB to track them? What SQLServer switches would you run? I'm not sure that I want to lock more that 3-4GB of SQL data pages into memory and starve the other pigs... How could I set this up to keep 2GB for the OS and yet really use the remaining 6GB most effectively?
