Memory Of Sqlserver.exe Cannot Released

Hi everybody
Help me, Help me.
When I backup the MSSQL databases using ARCServe 2000 in the server, the memory of sqlserver.exe is 1.5G in task manager. After backup was finished, the memory of sqlserver.exe cannot released. It is still 1.5G. Our users can get the resource of that server but they get it slowly. I need to stop and restart the MSSQL service. The server can back to normal.
Can everyone fix it ?
My server is
Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition with SP4
Windows SQL 2000 Standard Edition With SP3
Memory is 2G RAM

Hi all,
Is it just my server, or am I missing a point here.
SQL Server 7.0 Ent Edition on NT4.0 SP6 running only one 5GB database.
About 30 fat clients connecting to it via the application. It also has about 20 connections (concurrent) coming via our web users.
The sqlserver.exe uses upto 868MB out of the 1GBmemory on the server. The server has "dynamically configure sql server memory" turned on. After a reboot, sqlserver.exe starts with 38MB of mem and slowly starts to grow until it takes up almost 90% of the physical mem that is available on the server.
Please let me have your opinions

Hi all:
New to sqlserver 2000. When I run an application the sqlserver memory goes up and with each window that gets opened the memory goes up again. All this seems logical.
However, when I exit the application, the memory remains at the last level it was in before closing the application.
Is this normal?

Running sqlserver 2000 on a w2k server with 1gb of memory. After a reboot the memory usage is around 500m but quickly climbs. At 1 point it was up to 1.5gb so it must have been swapping. Are there any good docs about this or any recommendations on how to limit sqlserver from using all the memory. It is the only application on the server so it isn't affecting anything else so maybe it isn't a problem. I just wanted to get people's inpit on this.

We have a Server that is set to use 80mb of a 128mb machine. The machine is also set to use up to 300mb of Virtual memory as needed.
After running for 10 days, we got the message "Low on Virtual memory". We did some looking and found SQLServer was using 300mb between real and virtual memory.
So the question: Is there a manual method to get SQLServer to release extra memory with out stopping and restarting the service?

Would anyone have any suggestions/advice on how to determine what is causing the memory usage for sqlserver.exe to increase a dramatic pace in windows task manager? What would be a good resolution to slow down this memory usage?

Out techs informed me that they are getting reports of a system slow down. When they look, they find sqlserver.exe has lots of memory allocated to it. They reboot the server and then it runs okay for a few weeks. They tell me this just started happening recently.
SQLServer itself has not been touched in months. They are, however, starting to use one of the databases heavier.
I found a setting where you can set max_server_memory. Any problems if I set this to a value?

Hi Gurus,Our system is using SqlServer 2005 on XP.( On my machine,only thisapplication access SQLServer.) The sqlserver memory is configured to128MB (Min)~512 MB(Max)After our system get started, sqlserver takes about 100M memory. Afterthe system runs for a while, the memory used by sqlserver goes up to512MB. Then we exit our application and expect the memory usage ofSqlServer could be dropped down to the min value. Unfortunately, itseems SqlServer never release any memory until we restart it.I thought dynamic memory configuration means that SQLServer can autoshrink memory usage if there is no more database accessing. But basedon my observation, SQLserver just holds all the memory . :( How canwe let the sqlServer shrink the memory usage accordingly to workload?I do appreciate for your help!Best regards,Jennifer

Hi
I was not able to connect to SQL Server machine. On examining the Error log (which was huge 53MB), I found the following messages that filled 95% of the logfile. Is this something to do with memory allocation.
Someone, please let me know what is going on. After the server reboot everything works fine.
I am worrired that this message may occur again.

hi
I have had trouble with maintenance plans not deleting expired backups, & this filling the hadrdisk. i have now done an agent job using tsql backup with init/skip, so it just overwrites. problem now is that it fails saying the backup device isnt available (cant delet the file from OS either) - so this was obviously the prob with the maintence plans too - sql/os doesnt seem to be releasing the file after it is completed and a server restart is needed to release it...
anyone know how to sort this?

I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.Β
I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.
After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:
Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

Hello. I have received the follwoing error upon an attempt to Browse the Cube. All other tabs are functional, including the Calculations tab. We are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and SQL Server 2005 SP2. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
**EDIT** - Have confirmed SP1 for VS2005 is installed both locally and on server, also.

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.
My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?

I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

We have a static class that makes an HTTPWebRequest to get XML data from one of our vendors. We use this as input to a stored proc in SQLServer2005. When I compile this class and call it from a console application in visual studio it executes in milliseconds, everytime. When I compile it, create the assembly and clr function and execute it in SQLServer, it takes around 14 seconds to execute the first time, then on subsequent requests it is again really fast, until I wait for 10 seconds and re-execute, once again it is slow the first time and then fast on subsequent requests. We do not see this behavior when executing outside SQLServer. Makes me think that some sort of authentication is perhaps taking place the first time the function is run in SQLServer? I have no idea how to debug this further. Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

I created this table

’ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?’"
’ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )

and select again voila i see
"’"
