Merge Replication / Metadata Cleanup / Help!
Jan 8, 2007
At a client site we just had a customer away on holidays, came back and went to replicate and received the error. I understand why this would happen after the default 14 days, and the obvious fix to prevent it from happening in the future is to extend the period, however I am hoping someone can offer me assistance on the best way to correct the issue now
Error is:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Publisher for changes not yet sent to the Subscriber. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload).
The problem is we cannot lose the data that has been entered on this machine since the last replication. Writing scripts to manually save and pump this data will take days if not weeks (complex database). Is there any way to issue a command to cause a manual upload of the new information that is at the subscriber. Then I could just delete and recreate replication?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hi,
We have a merge subscription which is reporting the following error at the subscriber:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting the retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Publisher for changes not yet set to the Subscriber. You must reinitalize the subscription (without upload)
I'm a bit confused about this - there have been no changes made at the publisher - why would we be getting this message?
thanks
Bruce

I currently use 7 days for subscription expiration setting for my two merge publications, which will cause metadata to clean up very 7 days. Now I need to increase the retention period to be 14 days. How I can avoid missing metadata after cleanup? Microsoft ms151188 (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms151188.aspx) warns that publisher may not have enough metadata, which may lead to non-convergence. I want to change this setting without causing any data loss.
Thanks much,

Which sp code part is efficient?
1st code from sp_MSdistribution_cleanup. Used for Replication Cleanup job.
For 1500 rows, runs a day. Is something wrong with this code?
2nd code part is an alternative idea!.

I have a column going into a merge DT_WSTR length 50 on both(left/right) sides, yet when viewing the resulting output metadata, the length is 16. (I am viewing the metadata by clicking on the arrows)
This is obviously wrong.
NB originally the length was not set to this. As an attempt to try and fix the problem, I have added a placeholder column before all of my conditional splits of str50 type.
Why is it doing this?
This is causing my 0xC02020C1 error, I am convinced of it.
One of the errors has now gone away but the other two merges still have the error.
SSIS seems to assume that you will make no mistakes and will never want to go back and change anything, woe betide you if you have to go back and alter it later.
I have also noticed that certain (other) errors go away merely by opening and closing the tasks. Shocking.

I have a dataflow with a bunch of conditional splits.
Following this, a column is added to indicate the path taken by the data on each of the new split paths. (DT_WSTR length=50)
The data is then merged.
Or not.
I am now getting the following error on three of the Merges with seemingly no way of solving it:
Error: 0xC02020C1 at DF Data Cleansing and Deal Inserts and DealRole, MRG 3 [55818]: The metadata for "input column "Flowchart Path Status" (55961)" does not match the metadata for the associated output column.
Google reveals nothing, BOL reveals nothing.
Any takers?
I have been in to each of the tasks, opened, closed to try and get round any dodgy caching.
I can see the column in the metadata of the previous tasks.
I don't understand how it is possible to set the metadata of the output column on a merge.
There is no advanced editor, it just seems to take the datatype of each of the merge1, merge2 columns. (Am assuming it errors if these are not the same for a given column) I have rechecked the datatype of the column being added.
It shows up fine in the Merge editor as a selectable column.
How can I fix this?

Hi all,
I'm trying delete metadata of a sql 2005 sp1 subscriber from a sql 2005 sp1 merge publication, but is not working, the "retention" parameter for the publication is 999 and this is the code I'm using:
declare @num_genhistory_rows int,
@num_contents_rows int,
@num_tombstone_rows int
declare @retcode smallint
--select count(*) from msmerge_contents
-- records before 2,633,848
exec @retcode = sys.sp_mergemetadataretentioncleanup @num_genhistory_rows OUTPUT , @num_contents_rows OUTPUT , @num_tombstone_rows OUTPUT
select retcode =@retcode
select num_genhistory_rows =@num_genhistory_rows
select num_contents_rows=@num_contents_rows
select num_tombstone_rows=@num_tombstone_rows
--select count(*) from msmerge_contents
-- records after 2,633,8
Results :
retcode
0
num_genhistory_rows
0
num_contents_rows
0
num_tombstone_rows
0
Has omebody any idea why this is not working ?
I did check "sp_mergemetadataretentioncleanup " and I note that is using a function to calculate the limit date, but I could not testing because it give me the below error :
declare @curdate datetime, @cutoffdate datetime
select @curdate = getdate()
select @cutoffdate = null
-- find max retention of all pubs the article belongs to.
-- add some safety margin to compensate for different clock speeds
select @cutoffdate = min(sys.fn_subtract_units_from_date(isnull(retention,0), retention_period_unit, @curdate))
from dbo.sysmergepublications where
pubid in (select pubid from dbo.sysmergearticles where nickname = 5088000)
select @cutoffdate
and this is the message error:
Msg 4121, Level 16, State 1, Line 7
Cannot find either column "sys" or the user-defined function or aggregate "sys.fn_subtract_units_from_date", or the name is ambiguous.
I looked this function but I didn't find it.
any help will be appreciated !

I setup merge replication about 3 weeks ago between a few databases all running SQL 2008 SP1:
DB1 - This database is the publisher and distributor. DB2 - This database is a write-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 1) to DB1.
DB3 - This database is a write-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 1) to DB1.
DB4 - This database is a write-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 1) to DB1.
DB5 - This database is a read-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 2) to DB1.
DB6 - This database is a read-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 2) to DB1.
Everything was running fine, then suddenly one at a time the replication jobs for DB2, DB3, and DB4 all started reporting the error:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Publisher for changes not yet sent to the Subscriber. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload). (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199402)
I was able to manually upload data from DB2, DB3, and DB4 to DB1 then reinitialize the subscriptions. However, I don't understand why only those three subscriptions failed. I have other merge replication jobs between the same SQL instances that are still running fine. The only unique thing I can determine about the failed subscriptions is that they are write-only. I really don't want to make them read/write, as it would cause a lot of unnecessary network traffic to flow between them.
Based on what I've been able to gather, the subscriptions were marked as expired which caused this problem. If I change subscriptions to never expire to get around this problem, is that going to cause my distribution DB to grow unchecked? Are there other ways to solve this problem?

Hi all,
I know that adding a column using ALTER TABLE to add a column automatically allows SQLSERVER 2005 to replicate the schema changes to the subscribers, however, I would like to add a new column to an existing article that is being used for merge replication, however, I don't want this column to be replicated. Re-initialising the subscriptions is not a option. Help would be appreciated.
I am using SQLSERVER 2005 (SP1).

I am working on bringing our disaster recovery site to be a live site. Currently we replicate to one of out servers (server B) with merge replication (from server A). Server A also does one way transactional replication form some table to several other servers including servers at the DR site.
This setup is not going to be fast enough for what we need so I am wondering if a table is receiving merge replication will the merge updates also replicate down the transaction path??
Example...
Server B update a row and merges to Server A. With this update them replicate (via transactional) to Server C??
thanks...

I have just installed replication on our production server to Merge Replicate with a Laptop server that will travel from time to time. I have now noticed that we cannot add or change any fields or attributes on the tables which are being replicated (which are all tables in the DB). This is a problem because we are changing and adding columns all of the time. Is there a way around this issue like shutting down the replication service or something? I have been unsuccessful in finding a way around this other than removing replication while we make changes.
Thank you in advance for any help!

Hi all,
I have a merge replication going between 4 servers. The problem is when ever I do some BCP transfer to one of the tables in one of the servers. It puts the data in that table. But that Data does not get replicated to any other server like it should.
Please Advice on what to do. Is there any option I am forgetting to set or something.
Thank you for all your time in advance.

Hi All,
I have posted this earlier and I am re-posting it simplifying what I had said.
The scenario is:
I have two sql server database instances with the same database schema and all. However, both of them have different data. I have not set them for replication at all. Now, I want to do merge replication between them such that the data between them could be syncronized.
When I do pull merge subscription I have two choices -
1.Bringing schema and data to subscriber from publisher
2.Not bringing the schema and data from publisher to subscriber.
Obviously, I chose the second choice. But upon syncronizing I dont see any data from publisher coming to subscriber and vice-versa. If I add new data to publisher and do syncronization, I can see ONLY the new data created after the replication setup in subscriber. If I add new data to subscriber and do syncronization then the new data is removed from subscriber and not propagated to publisher.
Is there any way I can make this work??
Niben

How can i allow data movement from only wince sql ce subscribers and not from publisher running sql 2000 and win 2k.
Please reply immediately bcoz i require a solution which has to be implemented very soon.

I am in a process of learning Replication in MSDE, especially Merge Replication
Server runs on MS-XP Professional
--------------------------------------
I have a sample Access project 'ReplTest' which has only table with only 2 columns.
DatabaseName:ReplTestDB
Table Name :TestTable
MSDE Instance Name:SVRMYINSTANCE
Now I would like to know how I can configure this database for merge replication
using SQL-DMO
Laptop runs on MS-XP Professional
--------------------------------------
I have another access project which is running on computer 2 and connected to the
ReplicaTest database.
MSDE Instance Name:LPTMYINSTANCE
My task is, when I am disconnected from server I would like to have a local copy of
the database to work with and then, when reconnected, need synchronization with the
server database and continue working from server database.
How to write this replication process from scratch using SQL-DMO objects in both Server computer
and Laptop computer.
I dont have enterprise manager in both computers since they use only MSDE
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I have a problem when doing merge replication. I need to have a identity column on both the publisher and subscriber, eg id. When the publisher is down, my app will now reference to the subscriber and insert into the subscriber. However when the publisher is up, the app will reference to publisher and start to insert into the publisher. This will cause conflict in the id. Also, i need the id to be in running order, therefore i cant use range for publisher and subscriber. Anyone have idea how to solve this problem?

Hello,
I am having a problem getting my merge replication to work out. I am wanting to make it where the merge happens on demand. I have tried to run replmerg through cmd prompt and I get the error 'The subscription to publication [namehere] has expired or does not exist.' I have had no problems running the merge agent within Enterprise Manager. I have thought of running windows sync manager but I do not want my people to have to type a password in everytime they need to sync. I am running the whole replication process through FTP. I am in desperate need of help. Anything would be great!
