Merge Replication Deployments - How Do You Do It In A Timely Manner?

Our current production deployments using merge replication are averaging 4-5 hours - all of which is downtime for our client sites. Hotfix releases require no downtime, I am talking about maintenance releases where articles are changed/added/removed requiring a full snapshot to be taken.
Management is not happy about this deployment window lasting so long.
I have two questions:
1) Our first suggestion is to do a proof of concept of leaving the sites up while the snapshot is being generated and only briefly bringing them down as the snapshot is applied as leaving them down while we smoke test the new application + DB code. Is this easily accomplished of making SQL Server disconnect the taking of the snapshot with the application so we can time this appropriately?
2) Our snapshots take ~45minutes and we have 3 snapshots that are typically required. We currently run these serially.
A) Is there a way to take/apply these snapshots in parallel?
B) We have a SAN on production and have the capability to do SAN replication. I am not too familiar with SAN replication, but can that somehow be used to make these snapshots run in minutes rather then closer to an hour?
Any links/references that are informative for dealing with merge replication deployment best practices would be much appreciated as well.

We have a load-balanced Reporting Services installation that has two front-end machines that run IIS and the reporting services windows service, and a clustered Report Server database server. We have the front ends load balanced behind an F5. If we stop IIS on one of these servers, this traffic is easily and transparently directed to the other server.
My question is what happens if the Windows service on one of these servers is stopped? When Reporting Services is triggering subscription processing is it calling out to all machines it believes are a part of the scale-out deployment? So, if we install windows updates that require a reboot, is there a possibility that some of our subscription processing will be lost, or is RS smart enough to direct processing to the currently active node?

Hi all,
I know that adding a column using ALTER TABLE to add a column automatically allows SQLSERVER 2005 to replicate the schema changes to the subscribers, however, I would like to add a new column to an existing article that is being used for merge replication, however, I don't want this column to be replicated. Re-initialising the subscriptions is not a option. Help would be appreciated.
I am using SQLSERVER 2005 (SP1).

I am currently designing a SSIS package that will migrate data from Syabse to Sql server. If these packages are to be deployed to file system (as this is one time run for migrating data) or to SSIS catalog or to Sql server.
Also, I have not changed the default protection level value in packages during design time and would like to know if I have to change it while handling the deployment using DTutil (yes, i need to deploy & execute using command line utilities).
Please note that I do not have access to PROD, UAT environments and deployment team will use my BAT file that is expected to deploy and execute the packages.

I installed SQL 2005 Developer Edition on a Small Business Server 2003. It worked properly for a period of time. However, I cannot open the Management Studio today and it shows a message "Connection to target machine could not be made in a timely fasion.".
Initially, I installed the SQL 2005 Evaluation Edition. After passing the evaluation period, I un-install the Evaluation Edition and then install the current Developer Edition.
What's thing can I do?

I am working on bringing our disaster recovery site to be a live site. Currently we replicate to one of out servers (server B) with merge replication (from server A). Server A also does one way transactional replication form some table to several other servers including servers at the DR site.
This setup is not going to be fast enough for what we need so I am wondering if a table is receiving merge replication will the merge updates also replicate down the transaction path??
Example...
Server B update a row and merges to Server A. With this update them replicate (via transactional) to Server C??

"Windows could not start the SQL Server (RETAIL) service on local computer."
"Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
I am trying to start my SQL Server service and I get the above error. I am using Windows 7 32 bit. SQL 2008 R2 32bit. SQL has ran successfully for 2 years on this machine until a power outage the other night. Now I have this happening on two computers.
I have read every event viewer message up and down and searched Google for hours trying to find a solution. I have done so many things from changing dll's to reinstalling sql 2008 to trying sql 2012.
I uninstalled SQL2008 and installed SQL2012 and it had the exact same error message. It wont start that one process. I have read this forum and I see many instances of this issue being reported but none of them have been recent. I attempted to do everything the previous posts said to try and nothing has worked. I have tried to roll back using windows restore point, I have tried to change the servicespipetimeline registry edit in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl. I have changed permissions.

I have a SQL Server 2005 box that was moved from a domain environment to a non-domain environment and was never dropped from its original domain before moving over. Subsequently a new domain was created at the data center this SQL Server box now resides in. The machine was dropped from its old domain and joined to the new one.
All the while the service accounts were set to the local admin account. When I tried to start the Configuration Manager I got the message "Connection to target machine could not be made in a timely fashion.". I read some blog entries and tried changing all the service accounts to Local System and the error message still came up.
All of the SQL Server services run fine. It is just this management console that I cannot open. I wasn't with this employer when this box was moved to the data center so I do not know if it worked prior and there isn't anyone here that could give me its history.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm in the midst both of developing and using a custom Transformation. Of course, every time I change the assembly version and reopen Visual Studio, I get the error:
DTS.Pipeline: The component metadata for "component "Map SERVICE_CERT String Locale" (195692)" could not be upgraded to the newer version of the component. The PerformUpgrade method failed.
Out of curiosity, I'm wondering, how did it fail? Did it throw an exception? Was it even called? Is it my PerformUpgrade override that is being referred to, or perhaps the base class version?
I've seen several of the threads on this topic in this forum, but they haven't completely solved the problem (I will take the step of creating a policy assembly later today, and maybe that's the problem).
But, is there a reference somewhere to exactly what's going on at package load time as far as loading custom components? I'd love to know which methods are called, in which order, and how SSIS decides which version of the component to load.
I'd also love to see some best practices for component development. For instance, maybe I shouldn't allow the assembly version to change during development? Do I need to remove and re-add the component from the toolbox, and does that affect components already in the package?
Sorry to ask questions I'd no doubt answer for myself within a few months, but this project is due at the end of this month!

I am looking for a script whichs exports data (by DTS?) into a flat file and store the files (according their date stamp in the transactions) with a name like 05_2002.txt, 06_2002.txt etc. The data in the table Transactions will be deleted after some time to prevent fast growing of this particular table.
Any idea?

I started my database in last week to user with transfer data from Sybase to sql 2000 server. Intitally log file size was few MB near to 20 MB for each co’s, within 8 days it has reached upto 300 MB still datafile size in few MB , approximately 40MB for each co’s, why log file growing in such manger, how I can manage it?

My production box is running on NT4.0,SP6, SQL Server7.0,SP2. We implemented Merge replication. Working fine last 7 months. Last weekend i disabled replication, Successfully removed Distributor and Publishor. After that try add new fileds but won't allowed me. It's give the error message. I Also found Some Conflict_tables found almost 20 tables. All system Tables. Can delete these these tables, if i delete any problem my database.
I added filelds many times but this time i got errors.
Please help me anybody.

I have just installed replication on our production server to Merge Replicate with a Laptop server that will travel from time to time. I have now noticed that we cannot add or change any fields or attributes on the tables which are being replicated (which are all tables in the DB). This is a problem because we are changing and adding columns all of the time. Is there a way around this issue like shutting down the replication service or something? I have been unsuccessful in finding a way around this other than removing replication while we make changes.

Hi all,
I have a merge replication going between 4 servers. The problem is when ever I do some BCP transfer to one of the tables in one of the servers. It puts the data in that table. But that Data does not get replicated to any other server like it should.
Please Advice on what to do. Is there any option I am forgetting to set or something.

Hi All,
I have posted this earlier and I am re-posting it simplifying what I had said.
The scenario is:
I have two sql server database instances with the same database schema and all. However, both of them have different data. I have not set them for replication at all. Now, I want to do merge replication between them such that the data between them could be syncronized.
When I do pull merge subscription I have two choices -
1.Bringing schema and data to subscriber from publisher
2.Not bringing the schema and data from publisher to subscriber.
Obviously, I chose the second choice. But upon syncronizing I dont see any data from publisher coming to subscriber and vice-versa. If I add new data to publisher and do syncronization, I can see ONLY the new data created after the replication setup in subscriber. If I add new data to subscriber and do syncronization then the new data is removed from subscriber and not propagated to publisher.
Is there any way I can make this work??

Hi everyone
SQL Server BOL says merge replication can be done in only one direction. But my understanding is Merge replication happens in both ways between publisher and subscriber.
How can i allow data movement from only wince sql ce subscribers and not from publisher running sql 2000 and win 2k.
Please reply immediately bcoz i require a solution which has to be implemented very soon.

I am using merge replication at remote connected via ISDN Dialup line. I got following error and replication fail.

Hi,
I have a problem when doing merge replication. I need to have a identity column on both the publisher and subscriber, eg id. When the publisher is down, my app will now reference to the subscriber and insert into the subscriber. However when the publisher is up, the app will reference to publisher and start to insert into the publisher. This will cause conflict in the id. Also, i need the id to be in running order, therefore i cant use range for publisher and subscriber. Anyone have idea how to solve this problem?

I am having a problem getting my merge replication to work out. I am wanting to make it where the merge happens on demand. I have tried to run replmerg through cmd prompt and I get the error 'The subscription to publication [namehere] has expired or does not exist.' I have had no problems running the merge agent within Enterprise Manager. I have thought of running windows sync manager but I do not want my people to have to type a password in everytime they need to sync. I am running the whole replication process through FTP. I am in desperate need of help. Anything would be great!
