Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser 2.1

Sep 27, 2007

Hi

I downloaded MBSA and ran it against my SQL 2005 Server. It tells me that I have a severe risk because

'The following databases have public access.Remove the public access if it is not required - tempdb , model , msdb , ReportServer , ReportServerTempDB'

I have checked these databases and each have the Guest User but it is disabled. If I check the database properties the public role has no permissions against the listed databases.

Is this a bug with MBSA? If not how do I remove Public Access?

SQL 2012 :: Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer Error

Mar 13, 2014

I'm trying to run the SQL Server 2012 Best Practices Analyzer. After learning that I first had to install the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer, I did that.

When I tried to run the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer/Best Practices Analyzer remotely, though, I got an extremely verbose error message and want to confirm if I really need to do all of the steps involved on each target server that I want to analyze.

Here is what I tried after launching the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer application (I'm using 'MYSERV' as the target server name):

1. Clicked on "Connect to another computer"
2. Clicked "Another computer:" entered: MYSERV
3. Checked the "Connect as another user:" box
4. Clicked "Set User..." added by Windows credentials.
5. Checked the Use CredSSP box
6. Clicked OK.

After a second or two, the error below came back. Is that what I have to do on each remote computer to run the analyzers?

Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer

Connecting to the remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client cannot process this request. CredSSP authentication is currently disabled in the client configuration. Change the client configuration and try the request again. CredSSP authentication must also be enabled in the server configuration. Also, Group Policy must be edited to allow credential delegation to the target computer. Use gpedit.msc and look at the following policy: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Credentials Delegation -> Allow Delegating Fresh Credentials. Verify that it is enabled and configured with an SPN appropriate for the target computer. For example, for a target computer name "myserver.domain.com", the SPN can be one of the following; WSMAN/myserver.domain.com or WSMAN/*.domain.com For more information

Sql Query Analyser [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Driver]Timeout Expired

May 10, 2006

Hi,

Ive got a collection of view which piece together data from varying sources and assemble it ready for a stored procedure to squirt the data into a table.

This has worked fine up til yesterday when i had to amend one of the views to include a reference to another data set.

Essentially the data is for students and comes from our old db and our new one, each year group has different values so the views act to extract all data relevant for a child from both databases and accross all year data sets.

The problem im having is that i can get the final stored procedure to run. It ran fine the other day but since ive amended one of the views i get timeout errors wherever it's run. real problem when query analyser which has no timeout settings (apparently) times out as it means i cant run the query anywhere....enterprise manager will timeout after 30secs despite amending the query timeout setting to 600s.

so im a bit stuck, both views which the problem view is trying to combine run in under 30 seconds...when you try and combine them it times out- seems to run for a long long time.

note sure why this has started happening, from all ive read most peeps get this with EM and solve it using QA. but what if QA cant handle the query either?

heres the sql: (wont make much sense but hopefully shows that its not a complex query)

Microsoft Security Patches And SQL Server

Apr 23, 2008

I've just taken over the role of SQL Server DBA for my organization. I've been asked to go over the list of Microsoft patches that will be installed on our SQL Server boxes to see if there are any issues.

As of now, I'm going to Microsoft's site and reading up on the patches. But, they don't have any info on where there are any negative effects on SQL Server or other Microsoft products.

The patches are being installed on test servers and I plan on running a few jobs to test for any issues.

Does anyone know of any other resources I could check?

Thanks,

Microsoft Security Bulletin Alert !!!! Please Read

Feb 21, 2002

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Title: SQL Server Remote Data Source Function Contain
Unchecked Buffers
Date: 20 February 2002
Software: Microsoft SQL Server
Impact: Run code of attacker's choice on server
Max Risk: Moderate
Bulletin: MS02-007

Microsoft encourages customers to review the Security Bulletin at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS02-007.asp.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Issue:
======
One of the features of Structured Query Language (SQL) in
SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 is the ability to connect to remote data
sources. One capability of this feature is the ability to use
"ad hoc" connections to connect to remote data sources without
setting up a linked server for less-often used data-sources. This
is made possible through the use of OLE DB providers, which are
low-level data source providers. This capability is made possible
by invoking the OLE DB provider directly by name in a query to
connect to the remote data source.

An unchecked buffer exists in the handling of OLE DB provider names
in ad hoc connections. A buffer overrun could occur as a result and
could be used to either cause the SQL Server service to fail, or to
cause code to run in the security context of the SQL Server.
SQL Server can be configured to run in various security contexts,
and by default runs as a domain user. The precise privileges the
attacker could gain would depend on the specific security context
that the service runs in.

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability in one of two ways.
They could attempt to load and execute a database query that calls
one of the affected functions. Conversely, if a web-site or other
database front-end were configured to access and process arbitrary
queries, it could be possible for an attacker to provide inputs that
would cause the query to call one of the functions in question
with the appropriate malformed parameters.

Mitigating Factors:
====================
- The effect of exploiting the vulnerability would depend on the
specific configuration of the SQL Server service. SQL Server
can be configured to run in a security context chosen by the
administrator. By default, this context is as a domain user.
If the rule of least privilege has been followed, it would
minimize the amount of damage an attacker could achieve.

- Both vectors for exploiting the vulnerability could be blocked
by following best practices. Specifically, untrusted users
should not be able to load and execute queries of their choice
on a database server. In addition, publicly accessible database
queries should filter all inputs prior to processing.

Risk Rating:
============
- Internet systems: Moderate
- Intranet systems: Moderate
- Client systems: Moderate

Patch Availability:
===================
- A patch is available to fix this vulnerability. Please read the
Security Bulletin at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms02-007.asp
for information on obtaining this patch.

Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime ASP.NET Security Issue

Dec 21, 2006

I am struggling in calling an SSIS package programatically using the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime namespace.

I am succesfuly connecting to the package insofar as I am able to retrieve the package ID (GUID), but when I call package.Execute I get a 'login failed for user' error, which indicates a security problem.

My ASP.NET app is running as a domain user which has temporary 'SA' rights on the server where the package is hosted. In addition, I have set the protection level on the package to 'DontSaveSensitive'.

What am I missing to be able to execute the package remotely?

TIA,

Rick

Baseline Performance

Apr 7, 2000

Hi ALL,

I have a 5G database with 1G log file running on SQL server6.5. I would like to establish a short list of performance Monitor objects (NT & SQL server) so that is adequate to capture application performance.
I would like to get some advice:
1.What kind of objects should I monitor on my list?
2.How to automate the process (via a resource kit utility?) to save a new log file off daily and manage an archive process?
3.How to set alerts/notification (but no SQL mail is available now)?

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

SQL Profiler Duration And CPU Baseline

Jan 9, 2007

Sarfaraz writes "I have captured SQL Profiler data. I was reviewing top running CPU intensive SQL statements. The Duration (in seconds) 1.39, 1.09, 0.16 and CPU (in seconds) 0.97, 0.95, 0.16 respectively for some SQL statements. How do I know what is the normal baseline for duration and CPU in order to determine the CPU intensive SQL statements.

Secondly same question for long running procedure duration 0.14, 0.11. What is the normal baseline here. Is this normal or too long.

Thanks,

Performance Baseline Report

Aug 23, 2007

Hi all,

I want to create a server performance baseline report for my database server. I know I can use System Mointor and SQL Profiler to monitor the server by reading the "SQL Server Books Online". However, there have too many counters, I don't know which counters should I use. If I choose to use the counter, I don't know what is the expect value for the counter.

For example, SQL Server: Buffer Manger Object has almost 22 counters. Which counters should I monitor? If I monitor AWE Lookup Maps/Sec, then what is the expect value for the good performance.

Anyone know a good refer or test book can help me to create a basline report

Thank a lot!

Establishing A Baseline With Perfmon

Dec 13, 2007

I am training to be a DBA in a company running about 30 machines with MS SQL Server (2000 and 2005). Last week I went to a class where the instructor recommended establishing a performance baseline using windows performance monitor. He also advised to run perfmon remotely so as to not effect the performance.

What I am wondering is since I have so many different machines to baseline, can I run perfmon on one box, using a seperate counter log for each server? I would like to get a nice week-long baseline for each machine, but I also don't want to get bad data by running too many logs at the same time.

My plan is to do a small set of counters for processor, memory, disk, and the SQL server instance(about 10 counters total).

If anyone has experience in this area, I would appreciate any advice that you might have.

Thanks,

Matt

This also happens with anything else that requires () to add length such as char(), or nvarchar(), etc... Any ideas?

Is A Bug In Query Analyser

Sep 29, 2000

Hi

This what i did , since i need to maintain
five sql servers ,i thought i will build a repository
so on my desk top (running sql server ) i created a
table name master_dbscript with the following fields

server_name varchar(20),
dbname varchar(20)
db_create_scripts text

using enterprise manager-- all tasks --generate sql scripts , (cut & paste
to the insert statement in query analyser, the following is the insert statement

insert into master_dbscript values ('isd11t','test','ALTER TABLE [dbo].[child] DROP CONSTRAINT FK_child_parent GO /****** Object: Trigger dbo.test_patcase Script Date: 25/08/2000 12:10:09 ******/ if exists (select * from sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[test_patcase]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsTrigger') = 1)drop trigger [dbo].[test_patcase] GO ')

oops it created all the objects in the database where i tried to run the
insert statement. god saved me , i tried this with the test database.

when i tried the same with bcp it worked fine and i was able to see the
record in my table (one record) ,note you cannot use dts because it will support maximum 8000 chars only .

what is the problem with the query analyser ?
