Many companies use DBMS that are not Microsoft SQL Server. Those companies use Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Ingres, for example. I'm looking for a paper o website which exponses the advantages (strengths) and disadvantages (weakness) of those DBMS. Why? Our customers would like a comparison between different systems, and we must show them the Microsoft SQL Server possibilities.
Can you help me with this? In terms of performance, speed, security, maintenance, etc.

Hi folks, I have a table located in DB2 nd I need to have a mirror image of this table on a SQL2000 database to avoid some server downtime problems. Right now I have a solution using ADO.NET with Windows Services.
This windows service invokes itself everyday morning and pulls all the records from this table in DB2 to a dataset. Then I loop through the dataset and insert every record into SQL 2000 Table. This method is working fine ( It take approximately 2 minutes to insert 5000 records). I am just wondering whether there is any way to acheive bulk insertion in this case. Considering future growth of table I am not thinking the existing solution is neither elegant nor efficient.
Please let me know if I can achive the same either using XML, BULK INSERTS or any other mechanism in ADO.NET and please remeber that we are talking about data migration between different DBMS ( DB2 to SQL 2000)

Hi to allI have to choose a DBMS and a database architecture for an Ebay likewebsite about to be launched.The company wants to use a web hosting service and not host thedatabase on dedicated servers at the office.The database will contain web-only information and lots of back endinformation that is not really needed to be stored on the web host.I'm wondering how to design that part, should I store all informationon the web host only ? miror that DB every evening on some local DBserver to be able to use the data without eating up lots of bandwith ?separate the database in 2 parts ? how to sync and assure integritythen ? having a local DB will also mean the company will have to pay alicence for the DBMS ...What DBMS should I pick considering that the database will have tohold at least 1 million products to sale (eBay like) and all theinformation that goes with it. I have a query that executes just fine except that it won't recognize varchar(255) ( or any other value within the () ) and if I leave it off like this: varchar, then it executes but it leaves that value as 1 and that is just not very useful for my purposes. This also happens with anything else that requires () to add length such as char(), or nvarchar(), etc... Any ideas?

I keep getting this when trying to copy stored procs from one db to another on the same server. I am using the DTS wizard. I have been able to copy the tables but I need the sp's too, and there are too many to copy one at a time.
In VS 2005, when we choose database connection, we can choose one of the above. My question is in what situations should we choose MS SQL Server Database File (SqlClient), and when should we choose Microsoft SQL Server?
I want to deploy a standalone desktop application with a backend database. Which backend database should I should and which of the above connection should I choose?
On localhost this application works fine but when I put on remote server. I am getting following errors. For both localhost and server, I am using same remote sql 2000. I will appreciate any help.

This is driving me bananas. Can't find any info on this anywhere....SQL 2000 seems to replace double space with a single space when I seta varchar field to " " (2spaces), it only stores " " (1space). I have developed a database in MS SQL Server 2005 Express, to which I would require only bulkadmin server role from an external java application, because I only need to update rows, insert values or use select queries in the database.
The problem is that, using either the Microsoft JDBC Driver 1.1 or the Java JDBC ODBC Driver and the Windows XP Data Base (ODBC) configurations, I need a user with sysadmin server role inside Sql Server, otherwise JDBC won't connect to the database using the selected user. Even if I leave the sql login with setupadmin or any server role lower than sysadmin, the connection is refused.
Is there no way to connect using JDBC to MS Sql Server 2005 other than granting the connected user sysadmin rights? My code looks as follows:

I'm working towards MCAD and as elective I want to do the SQL Server course. The exam is on SQL Server 2000. I was just wondering whether the online course that Microsoft currently have a available for free at https://www.microsoftelearning.com/sqlserver2005/default.aspx would be useful and applicable to SQL Server 2000, or whether it is sufficiently different product to make it confusing to use this as a learning resource. Also if anyone can point me toward any webcasts for SQL Server that would be great. I listened to Fritz Onion's 15 part series when I studied for my ASP.NET exam and would like to do something similar for SQL Server 2000 if any are available.

I want to connect to company's SQL Server from home and to connect to home's SQL server from company remotely. The new released SQL Server Web Data Administrator by Microsoft seems solving my issue. I use it to connect to different SQL servers in different domains company wide successfully, but I failed to connect to home from company( I have static IP on the home server). Also I want to know how to configure the sever name if I want to connect to company's SQL Server from home. The company SQL server is inside the firewall with a internal IP. How it works?
