Microsoft SQL Server And Other DBMS

Hello:
Many companies use DBMS that are not Microsoft SQL Server. Those companies use Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Ingres, for example. I'm looking for a paper o website which exponses the advantages (strengths) and disadvantages (weakness) of those DBMS. Why? Our customers would like a comparison between different systems, and we must show them the Microsoft SQL Server possibilities.
Can you help me with this? In terms of performance, speed, security, maintenance, etc.

HI All,
I want to pull data from mysql dbms to sql servr 2005, i have wrote the following codes but it takes more than an hour and half which is not visible. Thus is there any consideration to consider and reduced time it takes. For your information i am going to use SSIS packags, there is no any tranformation, it is direct dump.

Hi folks,
I have a table located in DB2 nd I need to have a mirror image of this table on a SQL2000 database to avoid some server downtime problems.
Right now I have a solution using ADO.NET with Windows Services.
This windows service invokes itself everyday morning and pulls all the records from this table in DB2 to a dataset. Then I loop through the dataset and insert every record into SQL 2000 Table. This method is working fine ( It take approximately 2 minutes to insert 5000 records). I am just wondering whether there is any way to acheive bulk insertion in this case. Considering future growth of table I am not thinking the existing solution is neither elegant nor efficient.
Please let me know if I can achive the same either using XML, BULK INSERTS or any other mechanism in ADO.NET and please remeber that we are talking about data migration between different DBMS ( DB2 to SQL 2000)

I want to ask if there is any option in SQL Server 2000 that can be used to import automatically every day....I have an FoxPro database which is updated every day and I want my main table in SQL Sever to be updated by importing every thing again from the FOXPRO ever day at night.....is there any option for that?

Hi to allI have to choose a DBMS and a database architecture for an Ebay likewebsite about to be launched.The company wants to use a web hosting service and not host thedatabase on dedicated servers at the office.The database will contain web-only information and lots of back endinformation that is not really needed to be stored on the web host.I'm wondering how to design that part, should I store all informationon the web host only ? miror that DB every evening on some local DBserver to be able to use the data without eating up lots of bandwith ?separate the database in 2 parts ? how to sync and assure integritythen ? having a local DB will also mean the company will have to pay alicence for the DBMS ...What DBMS should I pick considering that the database will have tohold at least 1 million products to sale (eBay like) and all theinformation that goes with it. I thought any DBMS weaker than SQLServer or Sybase or Oracle will not be enough. What do you think ?Thanks a lot, hope I have made myself clear enoughP.S. I am trying to use Association Viewer Control in

I'm trying to install Microsoft Dynamics 10.0 with SQL 2008 Dev but when launching the utilities this returns the following error message:

I have a query that executes just fine except that it won't recognize varchar(255) ( or any other value within the () ) and if I leave it off like this: varchar, then it executes but it leaves that value as 1 and that is just not very useful for my purposes. This also happens with anything else that requires () to add length such as char(), or nvarchar(), etc... Any ideas?

I keep getting this when trying to copy stored procs from one db to another on the same server. I am using the DTS wizard. I have been able to copy the tables but I need the sp's too, and there are too many to copy one at a time.

In VS 2005, when we choose database connection, we can choose one of the above. My question is in what situations should we choose MS SQL Server Database File (SqlClient), and when should we choose Microsoft SQL Server?
I want to deploy a standalone desktop application with a backend database. Which backend database should I should and which of the above connection should I choose?

This is driving me bananas. Can't find any info on this anywhere....SQL 2000 seems to replace double space with a single space when I seta varchar field to " " (2spaces), it only stores " " (1space). Whyon earth would microsoft do this? If I save 2 spaces - I WANT TO SEE2 SPACES!!!!Can anyone help? Is this a database setting? Is this due to usingvarchar?Any help appreciated.Colin Hale

we got the error with access 2000 database and PHP as prog. language .
we created dsn for the connection.
reboot solves the problem. but we need another solution better than this.

when I set up dsn ErrorLOG, I used "abc" userID and password "XXX" which is our server database administrator assigned to me. I tested connection in odbc, it is OK
I just don't get, ther user ErrorLog already had login id and granted access to database errorlog. any clue, please help!

when I use MSSQL in local ASP files , it is fine.
But If I try to connect another ASP file that is hosted by another machine, I get the following error!

Hi,
when I was sending 50 simultaneous connections to the web services, I got these 2 errors:
- "1[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. "
- "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)"
Everything worked fine if I ran 10 simultaneous connections. I am using Microsoft ACT to load test the web service. The database is SQL Server 2000. Any idea about why this is happening?

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53). Can some one please help. I have even port no 1533 on my pc. Thanks.

I have developed a database in MS SQL Server 2005 Express, to which I would require only bulkadmin server role from an external java application, because I only need to update rows, insert values or use select queries in the database.
The problem is that, using either the Microsoft JDBC Driver 1.1 or the Java JDBC ODBC Driver and the Windows XP Data Base (ODBC) configurations, I need a user with sysadmin server role inside Sql Server, otherwise JDBC won't connect to the database using the selected user. Even if I leave the sql login with setupadmin or any server role lower than sysadmin, the connection is refused.
Is there no way to connect using JDBC to MS Sql Server 2005 other than granting the connected user sysadmin rights? My code looks as follows:

I'm working towards MCAD and as elective I want to do the SQL Server course. The exam is on SQL Server 2000. I was just wondering whether the online course that Microsoft currently have a available for free at https://www.microsoftelearning.com/sqlserver2005/default.aspx would be useful and applicable to SQL Server 2000, or whether it is sufficiently different product to make it confusing to use this as a learning resource.
Also if anyone can point me toward any webcasts for SQL Server that would be great. I listened to Fritz Onion's 15 part series when I studied for my ASP.NET exam and would like to do something similar for SQL Server 2000 if any are available.

When I try to export a database using DTS I get the following error message :

I'm from Argentina, I'm running SQL Server 2005 Express. I can connect to SQL Server via Management Studio and see all my db but I don't have acces to them !!
The system gives me the following error when trying to expand all folders:
Database 4 cannot be autostarted during server shutdown or startup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 904)
Any ideas??

I want to connect to company's SQL Server from home and to connect to home's SQL server from company remotely.
The new released SQL Server Web Data Administrator by Microsoft seems solving my issue.
I use it to connect to different SQL servers in different domains company wide successfully, but I failed to connect to home from company( I have static IP on the home server).
Also I want to know how to configure the sever name if I want to connect to company's SQL Server from home. The company SQL server is inside the firewall with a internal IP. How it works?
Any ideas?
