View 4 RepliesHi,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. I'm very new to SQL server and has been asked to convert microsoft access database .MDB to SQL server. In another word, i'd like to migrate access to SQL Server. It's not a huge database. The size of it is roughly 6MB. The reason for migration is simply because our clients don't have microsoft office running on their system. They use SQL Server. This's a new challenge to me as i'm more comfortable with using Access now.
I have been searching and studying it thru the online tutorial about what it's and what it does. I have also downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2005 Express edition because it has GUI Interface and it does have the ability to produce reports like Access does. Now my question is how do i start because when i created the database i didn't think of any client/server application? so if i want to run the Access, i just double click it and start using it. how do i migrate it to SQL Server for a testing sake?
I really need some guidance here please.
Thank you in advance

Anything I should know about before I start?
Also I want to work with SQL Express from another workstation instead of directly with the server, which tool do I use to build with it?
Probably very obvious answers but since it is critical to do it right, I wanted to check.
What is the best tutorial in regard to these kinds of functions?
THANKS!

Hi - is it possible to migrate to SQL Server 2005 Express from MSDE - and still use ASP.Net 1.1? Or will Express only work with ASP.Net 2.0?My MSDE database has simple SPs (no functions), and straight forward tables - can I just use DTS from Enterprise Manager to transfer this from MSDE to SQL Express, or create a backup, and import that into SQL Express 2005?Also, there was a sort of Enterprise Manager available for SQL Server 2005 Express at one point - does anyone know where to find that? Thanks for any pointers/help.Mark

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to migrate from MySQL 4.1 to MS SQL Express 2005
1. do i need to create an empty db under Express
2. can this be done from within Express by pulling from MySQL into Express or do I need to work from command lines
3. what would be the cleanest way to approach this
I have a MySQL dump and did look at the result from within Express, but it was not an import, I would like to find a way to import if possible that data. Table by table would be fine.
hello,
i have no idea what i am doing here and could use some help from someone who knows what they are doing.
i have a proliant ml350 g3 server running windows 2003 server with sql express 2005 software.
all the databases are running in compatibility sql 7 mode.
I would like them to be in sql 2005 mode if possible. Is there a way to upgrade the databases in the process?
here's a plan I came up with:
take sql workgroup 2005 edition evaluation, install it on a machine.
Mount all databases on the machine.
Wipe out the sql express 2005 machine, reinstall workgroup edition on the new server.
but here is my question
is there a way to migrate the data from the workgroup edition over to the new server through a DTS copy process, and if so, will it create a new version of the databases with the proper collation or the proper english?
please let me know. if this works, i will be thrilled!
I've got about 2 months worth of daily databases created in SQL Express 2005 for a pilot project, which the client is converting to a purchase. Unfortunately they're using SQL Server 2000 and I can't figure out how to migrate the databases to the older version. All my searching turns up how to do it in the expected direction.
Any pointers to how or where to search appreciated.
Thanks,
Wendell
Hello allWould it be possible to migrate the MS Access 2000 to MS SQL Server2000?My application is using MS Access 2000 as database and as userinterface such as forms. Now, I want to migrate the backend databasefrom MS Access 2000 to MS SQL Server 2000. However, I want to keep theMS Access 2000 interface. Would it be possible? If I migrate the MS Access to SQL Server, would the queries, back-endVBA, macro, tables and forms be affected? Do I need to change the MSAccess data type to SQL server supported data type?Which tool I can use to do the migration? Upsizing wizard or exportingthe Access database and then importing it to the SQL server? Thanks in advanceCheersBon

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to import from Access, the DTS wizard only allows me toimport tables and queries. OK, I'm not surprised the "macros" andreports don't come over. But it executes each query, and created a _table_ to hold the results. The sensible thing would be that SELECT queries become viewsand the others become stored procedures. But I find no waycontrols I can select to do that.I have to manually create the views/procedures and paste in the SQL.And then I still have to translate it into standard SQL.--Wes GroleauBeware of the man who works hard to learn something, learnsit, and finds himself no wiser than before ... Dear All,
Sorry for writing little lengthy question, thought can give a clear
information.
Environment:
I am looking to automate a data migration from MS Access 2003 to Sql
Server 2000, Client version I have Sql 2005, So am using Business
Intelligence development studio.
Brief:
Just to give a broader picture of the task , I am going to have a
Asp.net page in which user will provide the DB name and in a click of
a button I need to call the SSIS package and migrate all data from
Sql Server to MS Access.
Current situation:
I am totally new to SQL server and for SSIS too.For now I am able to
migrate data but partially (10%).Rest showing error of length in the
Columns.I am afraid am I using the rite componets ? .Am using "OLE DB
Source" for getting data from Sql server , then connecting it
to "Data Conversion" and from that to "OLE DB Destination".
Is this correct ? and so I need to use these 3 for ever table to be
migrated ? .Problems in this are I need to DB (MS Access) with the
table in place before execution, which is not according to requirement
too.
Kindly help me on this .
Thanks and regards

Trying to convert my access DB to SQL using 05 express using the upsizing wizard but receiving "SQL Server does not exist or access is denied"
[microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory] ConnectionOpen(connect())
I'm brand new to this. My site is currenty running cold fusion with MS Access on a remote hosting server that doesn't allow me to update the DB. They suggested migrating to SQL with CF so I can make changes without bring down the entire server.
I'm trying to make the conversion on my local machine running XP pro. I have just installed the .net framework and SQL server 2005 express. Do I need a different version?
Suggestions?

Hello!
I run an application with a SQL Server 2005 Express edition.
I read under
Start menu
--> all programs
--> Microsoft SQL Server Express
--> Configuration Tools
--> SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration
--> Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections
--> Database Engine
--> Remote Connections
That:
"By default, SQL SERver 2005 Express, Evaluation and Developer editions allow local client connetctions only. Enterprise, Standard and Workgroup editions also listens for remote client connections over TCP/IP. Use the options below to change the protocols on which SQL Server listens for incoming client connections. TCP/UP is preferred over named pipes because it requeres fewer ports to be opened across the firewall."
Here I chose the option "Local and remote connections only, using TCP/IP only".
But still, does this mean that other users can't connect to my database since I'm running the Express edition?
If that's the case, could this be changed by using mySQL instead?
Is it hard to transfer a MS SQL Server .mdf database file into a new mySQL database?
I am currently using a Microsoft Access (MDB) for my application. But I am looking at allowing other users on the network access the same database -- I know a Microsoft Access database is not the best solutuon for this enviroment.
I'd like to use SQL Server 2005 Express in this case. I am very fimilular with SQL Server 2000 Std/Ent editions. My question is, can I use the free SQL Server 2005 Express edition and allow remote users to connect to that database? Or is it supposed to only be used as a local database accessed by only the machine it's installed on?
Thanks,
Jason
I have installed SQL Server 2005 Express on a laptop for development purposes and would like to import some Access databases that I was using coupled to programs written in VB 6.
If using SQL Server 2000 I could use the management studio to automate the import but I can not find any way to do this in Management Studio Express. Would have thought that this would be the typical migration route - Access to Server Express
Is there some way to automate this procedure?
Thanks
I just installed SQL Server Management studio express. I am trying to remotely connect to a SQL Server Express 2005 remotely. I was given the server name, user name and password, and used SQL Server authentication. It connected fine, and I was able to get at the intended database.
I then went to ODBC data sources to add this SQL server using SQL authentication. I entered the server, user and password, and I got a nebulous "could not connect" error. I thought is may be because I still was connected in SQL Server Management studio express, so I closed it and tried again with the same error. I then reopened SQL Server Management studio express and tried to reconnect, and got the same nebulous error, and have not been able to connect since.
I tried rebooting and reinstalling SQL Server Management studio express, but had the same result. Does anyone have any idea what I may have done and how to undo?
Thanks,
Steve Colino
I have few queries:
(1) What is the maximum database size of Access XP and SQL Server 2005 Express?
(2) Is SQL Server 2005 Express edition FREE for development use?
I've installed SQL 2005 Express, enabled local and Remote connections but my client app cannot connect to the SQL server. I'm getting access denied or SQL does not exists. Any idea's on how to resolve this issue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded an Access 2003 database to SQL Server 2005 Express with the upsize wizard- worked great! Have a field that needs to be a hyperlink data type. There is no datatype in SQL that is hyperlink. Even if it were a text field, possibly inserting a hyperlink would work, but the insert hyplink in Access is unavailable, because the datasource is sql, maybe. I have a command button that ties to this function which won't work, obviously since it is not available. I need this field, it points to a file containing data that is being imported into the database. Huge piece of the database functionality. Making it easy for the user to find the file and using the vba to convert the data.
Saw the option of jump to url, but I don't think that will work? couldn't find the exact syntax either.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
A question regarding SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Is it possible to export Access databases into SQL databases without using programming (e.g. using SQL and programming languages)?
I understand you can do this with DTS, but the Express edition seems not have DTS.
Many thanks
Yuelin

I attempted to use SSMA to migrate a 2000 file format .mdb into SQL Server Express (and, as I've just purchased VS2005 Pro, into SQL Server Developer Edition).
The file is actually a backend, so nothing to migrate other than tables.
After several runs during which I received (and fixed up) some errors, the process runs smoothly with no errors or warnings, until it comes to the last step; migrating the data itself.
Data migration into 'parent' tables works fine. However, wherever I have data in a table with a foreign key relationship to any of the aforementioned 'parent' tables, it refuses to migrate it. The text of the error message will be very smiliar to the following (from the log):
[Datamigrator: Error] [464/7] [2007-09-23 14:18:54]: Exception: The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "Branch$CompanyBranch". The conflict occurred in database "DPMTest", table "dbo.Company", column 'CompanyID'.
There is nothing wrong, so far as I can determine, with the relationships involved.
I can insert data into the tables using any of the following methods:
1. Directly in Access, in the source backend.
2. Using the original Access frontend application, attached to the source backend.
3. Using VB.Net forms I am developing, in the 'upsized' database.
4. Directly in the Management Studio, in the 'upsized' database.
None of these four methods complains in the least about the relationships which SSMA balks at.
I would be grateful for any ideas....thanks.
I have to export data from SQL Server 2005 express to Access database. I have done many import/export using DTS package via SQL 2000. I don't have BI installed in my SQL SERVER 2005 Express. I understand that I have to use SSIS for sql server 2005. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have an Access 2003 project (sp2) and the data in SQL Server 2005 Express.
My problem is when I try to make querys, diagrams, etc in Access, a warning tell me that I have installed a version of Access that is older than the version of SQL and all the designs that I make not be saved, and recommend a service pack for Access 2003 to correct the problem.
Can anybody help me, where is this SP??
