Migrating SSIS Packages To Production And Job Scheduling

Apr 10, 2006

I have migrated several (7) DTS packages to SSIS in a development environment. In this environment these packages all work as designed. I am now in the process of placing the .dtsx files on the production server and scheduling jobs around them.

I am encountering problems in 3 of these 7 packages. I get the following error:

Message
The job failed. The Job was invoked by User <domainuser>. The last step to run was step 1 (Create and Transfer Credentialling Data).
This is not what I would call very informative. I have opened the dtsx files in question in BIDS on the production server and each has the following error reported:

Error loading <name>dtsx; Failed to decrypt protected XML node "PassWord" with error 0x8009000B" Key not valid for use in specified state." You may not be authorized to access this information. This error occurs when there is a cryptographic error. Verify that the correct key is available.
I have looked at the package setting "Protection Level" and all seven packages have the same setting: EncryptSensisitveWithUserKey
Each of the connections within the packages have been defined to utilize Windows Authentictation. And the jobs are set to run under the SQL Agent Account.
What I find most puzzeling is that each of these packages are defined exactly the same and some work correctly and others do not.
Thanks for taking the time help me with this issue.

Help! Scheduling SSIS Packages

Oct 10, 2007

Hi all!
I just started a new job, and im a junior programmer, so have no idea about anything yet...
My boss asked me to run a SSIS package weekly. I found out that I can do it throught the SQLServer Agent job task. Am I right? As i'm not sure about it.

Well I configure it, first as a Transact-Sql with the cmdShell, and it gave me an error like I have to start the messenger Service, I cannot do it as i'm not as administrator. Any way to sort this problem out?

Another thing I could do, I guess is configure the job as a SQL Server Integration package, but it doesn't find my package. Should I save it in a special path??

Any help would be great! As I'm really lost in it, and I've been 3 days trying to sort it out, with no luck. My boss is expecting me to do it by tomorrow...

Oh... finally, I guess I should add a Execute sql job task in the SSIS package? I've already done it, but it may be wrong.

Migrating SSIS Packages

Oct 3, 2007

I have created a SSIS package to load data into a destination table.

Now I cheked that package into main server. Then I tried to change path for both source and destination connection managers. I'm not sure whether I can do that.
But now what I want is load data into a data base which is in another server (Perforce).

Can I do this? Or Am I doing smthing wrong?
If so, Which is the correct way?

Scheduling SSIS Packages In SS2005

Feb 21, 2008

I'm trying to create a SQL Agent job and schedule that executes an SSIS Package, but when I try to run the job I get the following error:

Executed as user: adApp1. The package could not be loaded.

The App1 user is the Identity used in the Credential for the Proxy which has the SSIS Packages Subsystem.
The package encryption is set EncryptAllWithPassword and that password is included in the Command line with the /DECRYPT option.
The package is stored on the server in the SSIS Package Store and was placed there via the Import package option. Does the method matter?

One thing that I haven't been able to track down is exactly what permissions the domain account adApp1 needs on the server or in SQL Server, if any, in order to run the package. Not sure if that has any affect anyway.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Migrating Scheduled SQL 2000 DTS Packages To SSIS 2005

Feb 13, 2008

Below is a migration plan that I've compiled to migrate SQL 2000 DTS packages to SSIS 2005. Once these DTS packages have been migrated i will need to create a job and schedule them in SQL 2005.

I would appreciate and feedback or questions on this migration plan.

Migration DTS 2000 packages to SSIS 2005:

1. Will need to save the current production DTS package as structure storage file. We do not have a UDL file. We set the data connections within each DTS package.
2. Go to Sql 2005 - ManagementLegacyData Transformation Services - right-click and open previous saved structure storage file.
3. Modify the DTS data creditentials to reflect the SQL 2005 connection data. Modify any SQL 2000 MAPI settings to utilize SQL 2005 new database mail. Save the package on SQL 2005.
4. After the modified DTS package has been updated and saved on SQL 2005, save this file as a structure storage file.
5. go to BIDS. Create a new SSIS project. Right-click on SSIS packages and select Migrate DTS 2000 package. This will migrate over the DTS 2000 package with the updated SQL 2005 data creditentails.
6. click on the package properties - protectionlevel and change it to dontsavesensitive.
7. right-click and select package configurations..., select to store data creditentials in xml format.
8. right-click on execute DTS 2000 package task, select Edit... and click on Load DTS2000 package internally. This will embed this task into the new SSIS package. Test the package. Continue if successful.
9. Use SSIS deployment functionality to move the package over to SQL 2005 Integration Services. Right-click on package and select Run Package, if successful, create a job and schedule it to run on SQL 2005 Agent.
10. When creating the Job under SQL Agent, change the Owner: of the job to reflect the owner of the new SSIS package. Schedule the job.

I've just coming up to speed on SSIS 2005. Therefore, this is what i've been able to piece together up to this point and I'm looking for some industry advice/feedback on whether or not this is a good migration plan. I need to provide a migration plan to management by 2/18. Thanks

Migrating Database Changes To Production

Aug 31, 2007

We often have to migrate changes to sql server 2000 databases fromdevelopment to production. Normally we dump the sql from Enterprise Managerfor production and development and do a diff (using CSDiff - downloadable forfree). From the diff information we create some scripts to add new tables or alterexisting tables as required. This is time consuming and error-prone.I am now trying the following:1. Backup up the Development database2. Delete the Development database3. Restore the Development database as Development_Backup3. Use the the sql script to create the new Development databasestructure from scratch4. Use Data Transformation Services to migrate the data fromDevelopment_BackupThe problem is that many of the 'sys' tables are empty. For example table'sysforeignkeys' is empty. Is there an easy way to rebuild the data in the 'sys' tables? Thanks

Scheduling DTS Packages

Oct 9, 2000

I have seen lots of messages on scheduling DTS packages, but none have solved my specific problem.
I could manually run my local DTS package, but it wouldn't run when I scheduled it. The problem was with connecting using OLE DB provider. I checked everything: my NT account had all relevant permissions, as did the SQL Server agent account. I tried playing around with the job owner.

In the end, the only thing that worked was if I physically created the local DTS package on the Server rather than sitting at my workstation (still under my NT account though - I even logged on to the server with my NT account). The job then ran fine.

I think it is something to do with NT authentication (as I never got the problem before using NT auth). Can anyone shed any light on it? Is it something to do with the fact that with NT authentication the workstation ID is an advanced property of the OLE DB connection?

Migrating DTS Packages

Jun 20, 2001

One issue that we are facing while migrating our dts packages from development to test is that in all our DTS package tasks, every object used is prefixed with the database name. For eg. in a Data Transformation task the Destination object has the prefix dw_dev.dbo.dw_user. This is causing problems as our database name in development and test is different and our packages are not running.

I understand that one can change this property in the Set Connection Task by changing the Source/Destination Object property to the new databse name and running the task. However that would involve changing the source and destination names in all the data pump tasks in all packages.

Is there an easier way to do this?

Thanks in advance

i got the restore method down fine, but all of the backup methods I used yield an incorrect DTS package. the only way i can get the package to look right is if I manually open and save it

i would like an automated way if possible

i tried tools from sqldts.com, wrote my own, etc... none of them work right

it is sql server 2000

What To Look For When Migrating DTS Packages?

Oct 26, 2007

I have been tasked with migrating/recreating our DTS packages from our old 2000 server to our all ready existing and in production 2005 server.

I recently managed to create a simple SSIS package that connected to an Oracle database and dumped the data into the local MS SQL server. That is the extent of my knowledge of SSIS packages.

I have done a little bit of research and so far it sounds like it will be a pain in the butt to do the migration.

One thing I have read from a SAMS book is that migrating a DTS package that uses ActiveX will not work but then later on in the chapter it suggests that there is a possibility that migrating a DTS package that uses ActiveX could work. Which is it?

Can someone give some general advice on how I should go about doing this?

Job Scheduling For Packages In SQL Server 2005

Aug 31, 2006

----------------------
MS Win XP Pro 2002 SP2
MS SQL Server 2005
MS Visual Studio 2005
----------------------

Can anyone help me (even by pointing me to a documentation) in order to schedule Packages (from file system source) in SQL Server 2005.

I've configured providers logging, but still the error file doesn't give me any explanation why the error happens:
"#Fields: event,computer,operator,source,sourceid,executionid,starttime,endtime,datacode,databytes,message
OnPreValidate,PC1234,NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM,D_AGR,{8A4FA774-F5F0-40DE-AB16-A93F27950E09},{8A918844-8E43-403D-A606-C8CB4B7D8238},31/08/2006 16:42:55,31/08/2006 16:42:55,0,0x,(null)"

I've also done the same on the Step properties under 'Logging'

In Management Studio I've added my login name and I'm the only user using the machine and I manage both Visual Studio and Management Studio

The error coming up on the job history is as follow: "Executed as user: PC1234SYSTEM. The package execution failed. The step failed." "The job failed. The Job was invoked by User UK1USER123. The last step to run was step 1 (step1)."

By the way the package (.dtsx) runs fine in BI Visual Studio)

Thank you very much.

DTS Packages Not Migrating Completely

Jun 28, 2007

Hi, I upgraded several of my SQL 2000 database to SQL 2005 databases. I'm in the process of migrating over the DTS packages over to SSIS packages. I'm using the DTSMigrationWizard utilty to do this migration. When I started testing the SSIS packages I've discovered that not all the steps were being excuted. So I've noticed on several of the packages not everything migrated over. Such as connections to oracle and some of the task as well did not migrate over. Is there a way to migrate the entire DTS package to SSIS or do I have to re-create the entire package from scratch or is there a better way to get the SQL 2000 DTS packages over to SQL 2005 and have them run successfully?

Deploying Development Packages To Production

Aug 24, 2007

We have a system here where we develop SSIS packages on a development server. I am trying to figure out the cleanest way to promote these changes to a production server where stored procedures/tables that are used in the package are not deployed yet.

When I switch the connection in the package to the production server there are alot of objects in the package that are "invalidated" because they are trying to verify existence of tables/columns. One example is outputing the results of a query to a text file. The text file destination gets a red X on it because it cant grab the columns from the source query (because that stored procedure doesnt exist yet)

Is there a best practices or something on how to deploy packages to a production system? I have tried turning off "ValidateExternalMetaData" with no success.

Thanks!

Has in development server all packages run just fine... when deployed to the production server and executed the first child package to run gives error and says that the logging text file was unable to find the file??? It was supposed for the log to create and send information to the file right? So i think this is a little bit weird...

MIgrating DTS Packages Of SQL 2000 To SQL 2005

Jan 5, 2007

Hello All,

I am working on a migration project of my database(lets name it DB1), from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. I have some DTS packages in my SQL 2000 database which also needs to be migrated to SSIS. These DTS packages currently interacts with other database(lets name it DB2) which is also in SQL 2000 and which does the data transmission. The real issue is that the other database(DB2) also has some DTS packages which also communicates with DB1 (the db to be upgraded) and so when i migrate my DB1 to SQL 2005, i will have to change my DB2 packages also (although the change will be minor). Now considering that in future I might also migrate my DB2 to SQL 2005 I wanted to know what will be the right approach to follow. One is to modify the DTS packages of DB2 to accmodate the change in connection and the other is to migrate the DTS packages of DB2 also to SSIS.

Can anyone help me with this one.

Thanks in Advance

Mitesh

SQL 2012 :: Scheduling Packages Parallel And Retry On Failure

Jun 1, 2015

I come from other ETL tools (Oracle Warehouse Builder, BODI, BODS & DataStage) and i'm having trouble finding the best practice for scheduling a collection of packages to be processed parallel en retry those that fail. I created a staging project which contains all the packages (50) that extract data from 1 source system and grouped the packages into 2 sequence containers to make sure that the 'heavy' packages are started first and together in parallel.

I soon discovered that there is no standard option to have one child package retry on failure. Currently if 1 package fails the whole project is retried.
I explored checkpoints as a solution but that seems a dead end when running packages in parallel.

There seem to be 2 solutions for my issue:

(1) create a loop around every EPT with 3 variables (waittime, retry_counter & succes_flag)
(2) create an event handler to keep a list of ID's that failed and enable/disable EPT's based on that list (there's a lot more to it).

Option 1 seems like a lot of bloatware in what i expected to be standard functionality. I'm still investigating option 2.

How do others handle this kind of scheduling? Is it so different with SSIS that i'm approaching this incorrectly ?

Package Configuration, Parent-child Packages And Job Scheduling

May 3, 2007

Hi,

I've found this problem that when I change settings in my configuration file it does not automatically apply to all child packages which uses the same configuration file if run from a job in SQL Server Agent. I need to open the package and save it again from BIDS. I use one "load group" package to execute all other packages.

Is there a way from the job configuration to set a setting so the package allways will have the newest configuration?

Calling SSIS Packages From ASP.NET - Packages With File System Tasks End Abruptly

Jan 9, 2007

I've run into a problem with SSIS packages wherein tasks that write or copy files, or create or delete directories, quit execution without any hint of an error nor a failure message, when called from an ASP.NET 2.0 application running on any other machine than the one where the package was created from. By all indications it appeared to be an identity/permissions problem.

Our application involves a separate web server and database server. Both have SQL Server 2005 installed, but the application server originally only had Integration services. The packages are file system-deployed on the application server, and are called using Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime methods. For all packages that involve file system tasks, the above problem occurs.

When the above packages are run using the command prompt (either DTEXEC or DTEXECUI) the packages execute just fine. This is expected since we are using an administrative account. However when a ShellExecute of the same command is called from ASP.NET, the same problem occurs.

I've tried giving administrative permissions to the ASPNET worker process user to no avail.

I have likewise attempted to use the SQL Server Agent job approach but that approach might not be acceptable for our clients since it means installing SQL Server 2005 Database services on the application server.

I have read the relevant threads in this forum, namely http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1044739&SiteID=1 and http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=927084&SiteID=1 but failed to find any solution appropriate for our set up.

Anybody got any idea on how to go about this?

Integration Services :: Remotely Execute Packages On SSIS Server - Packages Are Deployed In File System

Apr 22, 2015

We manage some SSIS servers, which has only SSIS and SSIS tools installed on them and not the sql server DB.

SSIS packages and configuration files are deployed on a NAS. We run the SSIS packages through DTEXEC by logging in to the server.

We want to allow developers to run their packages on their own on the server, but at the same time we dont want to give them physical access on the server i.e we do not want to add them into RDP users list on server properties. We want them to allow running their packages remotely on the server.

One way We could think of is by using powershell remoting and we are working on that. But is there any other way or any tool already present for the same.

The massage I€™m getting in job history is this

The job failed. The Job was invoked by Schedule 5 (dim). The last step to run was step 1 (dim).
Can any one help me out in getting this job done

SSIS In Production

Feb 21, 2007

We have developed a project with many SSIS packages. Now we are in a stage where we are deploying this into production.

The operaitons team has asked us what are the things they need to known and do to make sure that the production system of SSIS keeps running.

Can you help me in comming up with a detailed list which I can give to the operations/admin folks so that they can ensure that this project keeps running?

I would appriciate any help in this matter.

regards,
Abhishek.
