Migrating Users To New Domain

Jan 21, 2003

We are currently in the process of migrating users from a NT 4.0 domain to a win2k Domain. On some of our SQL Servers the Windows Authenticated users own objects within the database. These Windows Authenticated users also own SQL Server Job and DTS Packages. Once these Windows Authenticated users are moved over to the Windows 2000 Domain they have to qualify there database objects, they can not see their SQL Server Jobs they created and they cannot modify the DTS Packages they previously created. Is their a tool or script out there that can fix this problem of moving the Windows Authenticated users smoothly over to the new domain.

Problems With Change Sql Permissions After Migrating Domain User/group Accounts Into Root Domain

Apr 5, 2007

I have a root domain and child domain.

After using ADMT to migrate the domain user or group into the root domain, when I use enterprise manager to try and change the permissions allocated to that domain user/group, i get the 'Error 15401 NT user or Group not found'.

This is a correct error as the user is now in the root domain, however sql (in sysxlogins) still thinks its in the child domain.

Is there a simpler way, other than collecting the users permissions, deleting the user from SQL then adding back in with the correct domainusername format, then adding the permissions back?

I tried renaming the 'name' in sysxlogins (not recommended) and while that worked, whenever I tried to add the migrated user to another database, the login name was missing and would not resolve.

I believe it is something to do with the SID not matching.

Any ideas on how to fix this ?

Reporting Services :: Adding (new) Child Domain Users To SSRS As System Users?

Jul 28, 2015

We have an existing SSRS server, and have just created a new child domain. We'll be migrating users from the parent to the child, and want to add the users of that new domain with access to SSRS. In the parent domain they are able to access, but after migration with the child domain account, they cannot.

I have added the group CHILDDomain Users with a system user role on SSRS, and PARENTDomain Users was already there.

Is there any additional step I should/could take to get this active?

Reporting Services :: Server Not Fully Functional After Migrating To New Domain

Jun 19, 2015

I had to migrate my report server (2008R2) to a new domain. I built new server and restored the old ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB into new server and also restored the certificate from old server. The Report Server is running but I don't have full access to all server futures anymore, looks like it's AD authentication messed up. My new account is Admin on new server but I can't see all options, like New Data Source, or wehn going on report level to manage to see all option such as Parameters, Subscriptions, Data Source.

Migrating Users To New Server

Aug 31, 2007

Hope somebody can help a novice, so I can impress my boss.

I've got to move a database to a new server and I'm trying to use Gregory A Larsen's sp_help_revlogin script http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/2228611.

It works perfectly for all users, but I want to limit it to one database by using his suggestion shown on that page:

SELECT sid, name, xstatus, password FROM master..sysxlogins
Your_db..sysusers b on a.sid = b.sid
WHERE srvid IS NULL AND name <> 'sa'

However, when I make the changes, so it looks like this:

SELECT sid, name, xstatus, password FROM master..sysxlogins a join
int_test..sysusers b on a.sid = b.sid
WHERE srvid IS NULL AND name <> 'sa'

I get this error when I try to run it:

Server: Msg 209, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_help_revlogin, Line 12
Ambiguous column name 'sid'.
Server: Msg 209, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_help_revlogin, Line 12
Ambiguous column name 'name'.
Server: Msg 209, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_help_revlogin, Line 12
Ambiguous column name 'password'.
Server: Msg 209, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_help_revlogin, Line 12
Ambiguous column name 'name'.

Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong.

The database that I want to limit the script/procedure to is called int_test on the same server, and I've checked that the table sysusers does exist, and that it has a column called name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SQL 2012 :: Migrating Database To New Server - Map Login To Users

Mar 10, 2014

I am migrating a database TESTDB from SQL 2008R2 to a new server running SQL Server 2012.

Management has decided the current sql users should have "better" user names. So the login and username "BadUsername" on the old server should be called "GoodUserName". Goodusername should have the same permissions as Badusername.

I have now restored a backup from the old server to the new server.

I used the following script for creating the login:

CREATE LOGIN [GoodUserName] WITH PASSWORD=N'difficultpassword', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[master], DEFAULT_LANGUAGE=[us_english], CHECK_EXPIRATION=OFF, CHECK_POLICY=OFF
GO

Then I run the following script:

ALTER USER Badusername WITH LOGIN = GoodUserName, NAME = GoodUserName

But the results are not what I wanted. I now have two database users: Badusername and GoodUserName. I would have preferred if BadUserName was "replaced" by GoodUserName, but it won't be a problem if I have to delete badusername manually. Worser is that GoodUserName have NOT "inherited" any permissions from Badusername.

Is there an easy way to transfer permissions or do I need to loop through the permissions of badusername and apply those to badusername?

Failure To Authendicate Domain/users

Sep 8, 2006

I have several access databases in mind to migrate to SQL server. I installed MS SQL 2005 Express on my machine. I will have procedures to run with authorizations beyond that of a common user, such as database administrative work where server agent is not available, I may rely on users' log-on prompt to do some maintenance work. However, I cannot get the EXEC AS 'DomainUser' to work. The procedures can be created OK. But whenever they are called, the following message shows up:

Msg 15404, Level 16, State 19, Procedure XXX, Line 0
Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'DomainUser', error code 0xea.

I tried to tweak with the account under which the server service is running. There are three options under built-in account: Local system, Local service, and Network Service. My understanding is that Network Service will use the log-on of the current user of the computer. I have admin right of the computer. None of the three options work. Additionally, when I specify an account (my own account), it's the same thing.

The procedure xp_logininfo always fails when I query a specific domainuser.

The ADHelper is configured to run manually.

I could not think of other ways to get a possible solution. Any help is much appreciated.

Domain Users + Local Groups + Scale Out Deployment = Problem

Feb 13, 2008

We have a problem authenticating domain users contained in local machine user groups across multiple web servers in a scale out deployment.

When we originally setup our single SSRS database server we were told the a best practice is to add domain users to local user groups on the SSRS machine.

Now we want to add more web servers and create a scale-out deployment. So, we added the web servers and configured the scale-out deployment. But, only administrators can see the reports since all of our SSRS roles are assigned permissions such as "Machine1User_Group".

We were told that we have to create identical local groups on Machine2 and Machine3 and then add them to the SSRS roles. This is prohibitive since it would mean managing 3 identical user groups containing thousands of domain users.

Is there a better way to do this without using Domain User Groups?

Thank you for any assistance.

User On Trusted Domain Does Have Permission To Access Linked Server On AD Deployed In Another Domain

Sep 28, 2007

Hi,
We have the followoing:

-A "master domain" AD, a "sub domain" AD, a trust relationship between the two (sub trust master)
-A sql server 2005 on a win server 2003 in "sub domain" AD
-A linked server to "sub domain" AD
-A linked server login using a "sub domain" admin acccount
-A view to this linked server
-A grant on masterDomain/Domain Users to the database
-A grant on subDomain/Domain Users to the database
-We want all connections done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".

Queries on the view work fine using "sub domain" user accounts.
Queries on the view fail using "master domain" user accounts (including master domain admin accounts)

"Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation."

All connections are done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".

Can we establish cross domain connectivity with "Windows Authentication" ?

Below are details of the implementation:

SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT *
FROM OPENQUERY(ADSI,
'SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn (etc...)
FROM ''LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com''
WHERE objectCategory = ''Person'' AND objectClass = ''user'' ')

EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname ='ADSI', @useself='false',
@rmtuser='subDomainAdminAccnt', @rmtpassword='sunDomainAdminAccntPassword';

In SQL Server Mngt Studio in Server Objects/Linked Servers/Providers/ ADSI properties security tab I have:

"connections will: <be made using this security context> Remote login:'subDomainAdminAccnt' With password: 'subDomainAdminAccntPassword'

Error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation.

Cannot execute the query "SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn

FROM 'LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com'

WHERE

objectCategory = 'Person'

AND objectClass = 'user'

" against OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI".

Replication From Machine Not In Domain To Machine In A Domain

Jul 11, 2007

Hi

I'm trying to set up replication from one SQL server to another.

The publishing server is not a member of a domain and is located in a hosting center (but we have full control over the server). I can set up a Snapshot publication just fine.

The subscribing server is located in another remote location and is a member of a domain. Here I can also set up the subscription without errors.

The errors, I think, comes when the snapshot is about to be created, the error is, on the publisher server:

[298] SQLServer Error: 18456, Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. [SQLSTATE 28000]

And the snapshot is not created.

Is it even possible to set up replication like this. I need to transfer the data from one sql server to another so we have a working "backup" so to speek if the other server does not respond.

Migrating A SQL 6.5 Db To SQL 7.0

Jan 24, 2001

Help!!!!!!

I cannot get the SQL Server Upgrade Wizard to work!!

I have one machine with NT 4 (SP4) and SQL 6.5 and another machine with NT 4 (SP4) and SQL 7.0 (new install, never had SQL 6.5 one it). I want to upgrade a database to 7.0.

Each machine can 'see' the other via shares and even trying to register a SQL database in each other machines Enterprize manager (although that fails because they are different versions of SQL)
Using the Upgrade Wizard, on the third screen, where you specify the Server Name for the export server, it even has the other server's name in the dropdown list {I never even put it in}. And yet, after I set the export server name and put in the database SA account password and then put in the SA account password for the local server (the one that is running the Upgrade Wizard).
After I select next, I get a message that states...
'Unable to connect to Export Server. Please verify that you are an NT administrator on that machine.'

These are standalone servers. Not BDC's. I am logged into each machine as the administrator.
I have tried adjusting the SQL services to allow logging as the System Account and the administrator account and a whole bunch of options....
but I can't get it to work.
HELP!!! This shouldn't be this hard.... should it???

Migrating

Aug 27, 2004

Hello People,

I currently have a MS Access database that will eventually be migrated to MS SQL Server. There won't be an application now, just the database and the reports. My doubts are on how easy this transition will be.
1 - After I build all the database with tables and relationships, is there a tool that helps me to import data?
2 - Is there a way to insert the data on the database other than writing the SQL codes, I mean maybe creating some 'forms'?
3 - Once the data is in, it there a way for me to create report on the SQL Server itself or do I need a report generator like Cristal Reports for example;
4 - If yes, then how easy it is to integrate them;
5 - Is it complicated to generate these reports or it is pretty much the same interface as in Access or Delphi?

Thanks a lot

Migrating Sql Server

Mar 8, 2008

I've developed a website and it's hosted by a hosting company. Lately i've registered a new domain with a new virtual hosting account. I've transfered my web files succesfully. But migrating the sql server failed for a couple of times now. My database containes many tables with many products. My hosting provides doesn't give me the opportuniy to restore my backup which i've backuped from my old server. First I tried to use the import and export tool of sql server 2005. This was very easy and it succeeded. But this tool only migrates the tables and the views. All the common stored procedures of asp.net membership are not exported. So I can't login at the moment. I've tried to generate a sql script with all the stored procedures with sql server management studio. But If i want to run this script on my new db, it fails with various errors. I tried to use the aspnet_regsql tool to create all the membership tables and stored procedures. If this succeeds, I can import and export my old db to the new one. But i'm getting a error while trying to use the aspnet_regsql tool.
