Migration Of MS-Access Table Into SQL Server 2000

I've downloaded the migration tool to convert an Access 2000 DB to a SQL DB. The VB code utilizes DAO (3.6) for hourly automatic compaction and the creation of an encrypted security database. ADO is used for the data maintenance functions. I expect the current connection methodology of ODBC using Jet 4.0 will need to be modified (many articles here address this). All the SQL code is inline and also must be modified. The Coldfusion code utilizes Micrsoft Access with Unicode via an ODBC connection with only SQL Select statements. At another job, I migrated an Informix 7 database to MS SQL 7 and for the most part the SQL code remained the same except for the wildcard spec from * to %.
I'm looking for insights and/or shortcuts on this effort, primarily in the SQL command mods area. I'm perusing the threads here as we speak, but hoped someone knew of a specific thread I could go to....laziness is alive and well for us chronologically gifted people, i.e. over 55.

Hello,We maintain a VB6 front-end application using an Access 2000 database. Allcode and forms are in VB6. The program also uses several queries/reportsdefined in Access. For corporate reasons we must move to SQL Server rightaway. Based on our configuration, we're hoping someone can give us a feelfor what's involved here. I am in the process of migrating 40 access databases to SQL Server. I am migrating the tables to the backend. All of these databases are Identical in structure and purpose. The goal is to centralize all of the databases backends into one Sql server database, but the data needs to stay seperated by each location. So I added a location field to each table in the database; so that each locations data will be seperated by location. How do I go about filtering out the the data so that each location can only update, delete, an view their own data? (I dont mind a long answer.)

I was really happy to see the Migration Assitant for transferring the Access2000 data to SQL 2005.
Unfortunately, during the migration wizard, when it comes to the window of "connect to SQL Server 2005" it gives an error. It says "Connection to SQL Server Failed. An error has occured while establishing connection to the server... also point out it could be SQL server not allowing remote connections (I checked), and something that says: provider: named pipes provider , error 40" ... I'm stuck at this window. Please please help?

hi,
I migrated the Northwind database using SQL Migration Assistant for Access. it worked fine and I was able to link the access forms to Local machine SQL Server 2005 and it worked fine.
Now i want to link the same Northwind access database to Another Server on the network.
When i try to run the wizard again, it won't migrate the user objects like tables to server, it will just create a database and that is it.
it will give me this error too.
No User objects were selected.

I€™m currently evaluating SQL Server 2005 to what advantages there would be to upgrading from SQL Server 2000. Our existing systems make much use of DTS so it critical for us to be able to run SQL Server 2000 DTS packages in SQL Server 2005. Having installed the Enterprise SQL Server 2005 CTP successfully on a new Windows 2003 server and following the advice to install Legacy Components I find the Migration Wizard (under Legacy> Data Transformation Services) fails with the following error after entering source and target dialogs: This wizard will close because it encountered the following error: Additional Information: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index (mscorlib) Also when trying to open a structured storage DTS file I incur another error: Unable to load DTS 2000 Runtime. This component may have not been installed (Microsoft.SqlServer.DtsObjectExplorerUI) This error seems to imply that the DTS 2000 Runtime needs installing. Can this component be downloaded and installed separately?

i must convert my SqlServer2000 to SqlServer2005. I just do it on my Computer and i run a component "SQL Server upgrade wizard" it convert my SQLServer. But now i must do it on my Server Web and if i run that component it give me an error : "must run SQL 6.5" and i don't installed it.
Can i download it with all right migration?

Hello,
I have a client that is moving their web ap (which has already been developed) from one host to their own servers. The problem is that they don't have MS SQL Server 2000, but they have MSDE. All the code is already writen to work with SQL SERVER 2000.
I have a couple of questions:
1. Can I safely assume that all this code will work with MSDE and all I have to change is the connection string? For example:
SqlConnection myConn = new SqlConnection(connstring);
In other words, can I still use the SqlClient classes to work with MSDE, or will I have to modify the code?
2. Will it be a problem creating the tables and migrating the data from SQL SERVER to MSDE? Can I use Enterprise Manager to do this?
3. I never had to remotely (or even locally) connect to a MSDE database alone, I always develop with a SQL Server db. Can I use a similar connection string for the MSDE database? Do I have to create a data provider on the local machine? Can you give me an example of a MSDE connection string?

OK so I'm just the Network Admin here, but our DBA's are off doing other stuff. So I thought I may inquire here about how the easiest way to migrate from SQL Server 2000 to 2005? The first server I'd like to migrate is just databases with a few users, no DTS packages or anything like that... The only problem is that there are several hundred db's, so moving them one at a time is not an option. Has anyone here had successful experience with doing this? Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a fairly large web application that was built with SQL Server 2000 and .NET 1.1. We're planning on moving to .NET 2.0 eventually, but there's a lot of work to be done before that happens. In the short term, we're looking to purchase a new database server and would like to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 at the same time. Is it as simple as recreating our databases on this new system and changing the connection string, or are there other gotchas? As far as what we're doing with SQL Server 2000, it's really nothing more than tables, views, and stored procedures. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,
I have been asked to look at optimising a Data Migration Strategy for one of our clients. I am quite new to Data Migration (I'm actually a system designer!).
The migration is from a legacy Oracle 7.16 Db to a SQL Server 2000 environment.
The legacy Db has some large tables - 30 Million+ rows
Table/column Mapping is 1:1
At present we are using DTS to import into the SQL environment.
My question is: Is there any way to leverage the Oracle 7.16 export to speed up the migration process?
Any advice would be appreciated.

The Environment:
I have an old Windows 2000 BackOffice server (Retail but with no media) that hosts a small database (<50mb) that is hosted on the local SQL Server 2000 installation. The network has 8 PCs that connect to the database via ODBC connections. I just purchased a new server running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (OEM).
What I€™m Trying to Accomplish:
I want to decommission the old 2000 BackOffice server and move the database to the new 2003 Standard server. I€™m trying to do this on the cheap, so I really want to avoid spending thousands on a new SQL server license.
Things I€™m Considering:
1) Migrating the database from SQL 2000 Standard to SQL 2005 Express
2) Moving the database from SQL 2000 Standard to MS Access
3) Purchasing SQL Server 2005 licenses and upgrading
4) Purchasing SQL 2000 Server licenses
The options are pretty much listed in my order of preference. I€™d like to move from SQL 2000 Server to SQL 2005 Express, but I haven€™t really found a lot of material on the subject since people customarily go the other way.
Any advice or alternative recommendations would be much appreciated!

I attempted to use SSMA to migrate a 2000 file format .mdb into SQL Server Express (and, as I've just purchased VS2005 Pro, into SQL Server Developer Edition).
The file is actually a backend, so nothing to migrate other than tables.
After several runs during which I received (and fixed up) some errors, the process runs smoothly with no errors or warnings, until it comes to the last step; migrating the data itself.
Data migration into 'parent' tables works fine. However, wherever I have data in a table with a foreign key relationship to any of the aforementioned 'parent' tables, it refuses to migrate it. The text of the error message will be very smiliar to the following (from the log):
[Datamigrator: Error] [464/7] [2007-09-23 14:18:54]: Exception: The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "Branch$CompanyBranch". The conflict occurred in database "DPMTest", table "dbo.Company", column 'CompanyID'.
There is nothing wrong, so far as I can determine, with the relationships involved.
I can insert data into the tables using any of the following methods:
1. Directly in Access, in the source backend.
2. Using the original Access frontend application, attached to the source backend.
3. Using VB.Net forms I am developing, in the 'upsized' database.
4. Directly in the Management Studio, in the 'upsized' database.
None of these four methods complains in the least about the relationships which SSMA balks at.
I would be grateful for any ideas....thanks.

I downloaded the Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access 4 weeks ago. Today, I tried this program for the first time. I added one Database with 3 Access 2003 Tables to the Access Metadata Explorer. I right clicked Databaes on the Access Metadata pane and did not see the "Convert Schema" highlighted!!!??? What is wrong with the program? How can I make it highlighted? Please help and advise.

Scenario
Recently moved a SQL2000 database to SQL2005.
Collation on SQL 2000 database server was SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
Colaltion on SQL 2005 database server is Latin1_General_CI_AS
After restoring the SQL 2000 database on SQL 2005 we observed that the database collation was SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. We have altered the database collation to Latin1_General_CI_AS. We understand this will work for all new objects created on the database but existing objects (prior to the collation change) will continue to have the 'SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS' collation.
What is the best method to change the collation of the older columns to 'Latin1_General_CI_AS' -
1) Run ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN <colname> <datatype> COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS <nullability>
on each varchar/char column
or
2) For each table
BCP out data
DROP TABLE
RECREATE TABLE (taking the new collation Latin1_General_CI_AS)
BCP in data
3) Other methods?

hi, i need some help here,i made a simple data driven website in my development PC, at first, i used MS Access for my data base then i migrate it to sql server express 2005, and it works fine when i try to run it in my development PC with my IIS. but of course i will be deploying it to a real server, in our office were i will deploy my data driven site, we have a PC server Win Server 2003 with SQL Server 2000 Enterprise (im not pretty sure by the name but i know its not a free version, its something like a 2000 sql version with a word enterprise at the end).so my question is, i am developing an ASPdotNET site originally used SQL server 2005 express,how can i migrate my site to the Win Server 2003 and my database from SQL Server 2005 express to SQL server 2000 enterprisewill it work?? if not, what are the possible solution that i can do in cases like mine?i used Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Ed. in making my sites, and its DOES NOT allow databases in SQL Server 2000!!!!!it says "can't recognize the database"i hope you can help me with this.Thanks-SALAMAT PO....=)

Our costumer is going to install new hardware.
Actually he is using 2 servers which both have windows 2000 server (+ AD) and sql server 2000 installed. On the new servers he will use windows 2003 and sql server 2005 The hard part will be migrating sql server 2000 to sql server 2005. I have read (not 100%, though) the SQL2005UpgradeTechRef document and downloaded SQLUASetup.exe to be ready (microsoft sql server upgrade analyzer software)
But actually i want to know what is best upgrade path and what are your experience. Is there already a got (or better or perfect) document availabe for the sql server 2000 to sql server 2005 sql server side by side upgrade. Please help! thanks

Hello Gurus:
My database is running right now at SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition. We would like to upgrade it to SQL server 2005 Standard Edition.
Since this database was upgraded from MS Access 2000 to SQL server 2000. This database is accessed by a proprietary application. I don't know some of the details about this application.
There is one more issue with this database, replication was implemented earlier and now it is disabled.
I am thinking that to take a full backup from SQL server 2000 and restore it in SQL server 2005. What do you think?
Please let me know if you have any other idea.
I have another question for you. Right now replication is disabled and I restore SQL server 2000 database to SQL server 2005. Would there be any problem when we try to implement replication again?

I'm trying to migrate tables from one database to another. The tables in the source database (MY_SOURCE_DB) have a schema of "dbo". I want to create the tables in the target database (MY_TARGET_DB) with a schema of "xyz". I want to migrate all of the tables with "contract" in the table name:
select table_name from information_schema.tables
where table_name like '%contract%'
I want to migrate the full table definitions, table data and dependent objects. This needs to be done through a sql script as opposed to SSIS.

I've created a small company database where the tables reside in a SQLServer database. I'm using Access 2000 forms for a front end.I've got a System DSN set-up to SQL Server and am using links withinAccess 2000 to get to the SQL Server tables.My forms worked fine until I made a few minor changes to the databaseschema on SQL Server (e.g. added a foreign key, or added a column).After that, all the links break - I click on a table link and get anerror msg like "invalid object name."Deleting the links after a schema change and re-adding the links seemedto fix the problem. The forms I'd already created seemed to work fineafter re-creating the links.But then I got more advanced with my forms. I have it set up so thatfor certain entry fields, the combobox gets populated with values froma table (the description appears in the drop-down and the correspondingprimary key value gets populated in the table). I created a number offorms using this technique, entered data, and everything worked fine.Made a small schema change and it broke everything -- not the actualtable links, but the functionality for the drop-downs. My values nolonger appeared, and this was true for forms that accessed tables whoseschemas did not change.This is driving me nuts. Is there any way to keep my forms frombreaking each time I make a small schema change?Thanks.- Dana

I worked on a project in ASP.NET using SQL server 2000 as the back end. Its a conversion application that I rewrote in ASP.NET using C#. I need to import the old data in Access db into SQL server 2000 and I have very little knowledge about doing it. The data in not a direct one -one transformation. There are considerable changes to the Database design and data types. Any help and suggestions wud be really helpful. Also, any article links wud be great.

We have a SQL Server 7.0 system in NT 4.0 environment. We upgraded our users to Access 2000 and started to work with this. Now we installed a new
server which is Windows 2000 based and the domain is different from

I can't see the views and tables. Another thing is access disconects from SQL Server when I want to see the tables. So what can be the problem.
In one part there is an Access 2000 on Windows 2000 server. On the other part SQL Server 7.0 on Windows NT 4.0. And Access can't see the tables in SQL server.

At work we are migrating several Access databases to SQL Server 2005 standard edition. These Access databases have no user interface forms. They do however have a series of macros that execute make table queries.
I'm trying to determine what are options are for replacing the make table queries in the macros. My first thought was to do the work in a SQL Server stored prodecure. I am asking for advice on what our options are. Is a stored procedure the way to go? Any suggestions on how to do it?
