I need to get rid of the first char of data in a field f1 (in sql server)
I tried to use:
update myTable
set f1= substring(f1,1,f1.Len -1)
and get error "The column prefix 'f1' does not match with a table name or alias name used in the query.

I can add update modify the colums and data in the exciting table but I cannot figure out how to add a row.
This is just a simple datalist of names. firstname lastname. there are 18 of them and i want to add more names
In Enterprise Manager, I would right click on the table, choose Open Table and Query where I could select specific records and (most importantly) could alter data in a record by deleting the text, adding or over-typing.
In 2005 Server Management Studio I just cannot figure how to do this. I'm guessing that I need the 'Script Table as' option but then what?
I have managed to open selected data using the New Query and then Design Query in Editor, but the results only appear in a kind of view form and I cannot seem to alter any of the data entries, I get dotted lines around the selected field.
Please help, it seemed so much easier in 2000!

I am Crystal Reports Developer and I am new in SSIS environment. I have started to read Professional SQL Server 2005 IS book. I am really confused by many tasks to choose.
I need to develop reports from data warehouse. But before I have to send the data from operational database (SQL Server 2000) to warehouse (SQL Server 2005) monthly - I have a script for retrieving the data. For my package, I chose Data Flow Task, Execute SQL Task, and OLE DB Destination, and it does not work.
Please help me if I can look similar packages performing?

I am studying indexes and keys. I have a table that has a fixed width of data to be loaded in the first column which is parsed in a view based on data types within the fixed width specifications.
Example column A:
(name phone house cost of house,zipcodecountystatecountry)
-a view will later split this large varchar string basedÂ
column b: is the source filename of the data load (varchar 256)
....
a. would there be a benefit of adding a clustered or nonclustered index (if so which/point in direction on why)
b. is there benefit of making one of these two columns a primary key (millions of records) or for adding a 3rd new column as a pk?
c. view: this parses the data in column a so it ends up looking more like "name phone house cost of house zipcode county state country" each having their own column.
-any pros/cons of adding indexes (if so which) to the view instead of the tables or both for once the data is parsed?

For some reason I was thinking that it would be possibly to migrate thedatabase into the data warehouse. The reason is that in looking at the schematic design forthe data warehouse there are some data tables that could also be used by our application that uses the DB.

Once we create reports on one machine, can we move those reports to another machine and work or modify from there?
Right Now I created bunch of reports based on the data base which is in my local machine.
But now How can I connect those reports to data base in prodcution server? It is not accesible right now because of the security purpose. Is there any other alternatve way to do that? And other option is moving ReportserverDB and TemperoryDB to production server environment. How can we do that? My supervisors dont like juct backing up and resotring option.

I am developing a Vb.net search functionality which is accessing data from the SQL SERVER sharepoint portal database.
I have troubles in connecting to the particular server and retrieving each table from the database.I have succes in importing tables into Access.
I want to query the portal sql database itself and need to provide a connection string which will made the access easier.
