Move Principle And Mirror From Local Drive To San?

Sep 22, 2007

I have a 600 gig database that has a mirror. I need to move the databases from local drives to a SAN. Can anyone recommend a document that lists the steps to go through to move both the principle and mirror to the SAN with no down time? or minimal down time?

Mirror Busy Makes Principle Slower?

Jun 6, 2008

Hi everyone,

A relatively simple question but I have no been able to find an answer.

We have a SQL Server mirror Active/passive with High availability. So the usual Witness with failover.

However, we are using the Mirror server for reporting and letting the users query without limit. We sometimes have problems (slowness) with the Principle server and I'm wondering the following.

If the mirror server in high availability mode is maxed out will this affect the principle server because it takes longer to commit the data on both servers?

It seems obvious but I would like a clear response.

Thanks.

Moving A SQL Server 2000 Database From A Local Drive To Another Local Drive

Jan 31, 2008

Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.

How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?

Thanks,

How To Move A Log File From 'e' Drive To 'f' Drive....

Nov 9, 2000

I am trying to move a log file from one drive to another.

What I have done is add another file to my file group. So now my log has a file on the 'e' drive and one on the 'f' drive. I now want to remove the file on the 'e' drive. I have emptied the file on the 'e' drive. When doing the command:

ALTER DATABASE Uniprodruntime
REMOVE FILE m_rk_runtime_log

I get the following error message..

Server: Msg 5020, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The primary data or log file cannot be removed from a database.

I have also gone into enterprise manager and tried to delete the file and it does nothing.

Has anyone run into this?

Best Way To Move Datafile From C Drive To D

Aug 17, 2006

I obviously did not search the archives on the right terms so what isthe easiest and fastest way to move a 3G database from a nearly full Cdrive to the nearly empty D drive that should have been used.I could back it up, drop it, recreate it using the D drive, and restoreit but it seems like there should be a way to just move the datafileand use if from the new location.I am thinking that detatch/attach is the best method, but I would likeconfirmation or suggestions on how to proceed or things to be aware ofwhen using this method.-- Mark D Powell --

How To Move Only The Transaction Log Files (.ldf) To A Different Drive?

Apr 17, 2007

Hello guys and girls. I have installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and I have specified that the databases should be created on the K: drive. This is okay but now I need to move all the transaction log files (.ldf) to the L: drive. I have already changed the default location for the log files to point to the L: drive and the new databases that were created after the installation have their transaction log file correctly in the L: drive but now I need to move transaction log files for the master, model, temp ... databases. How can this be done? And are there any gotchas?

Move Log Files For SQL 2005 Databases To Another Drive

Jan 24, 2008

Hello,

I need to move all log files for my SQL 2005 databases to another drive. I don't wish to shrink the files, I need to move the logs to another drive spindle. I did find an article (Article ID: 224071) that describes moving both the database and logs using sp_detach and then sp_attach. What is the best way just to move the logs to another drive on the same server, and that keeps the databases in their original location?
Thanks.

New Database On Other Local Network Drive

Jan 15, 2007

Hello,
I need help with the setup of my sql server express 2005 and more specifically, with the location of the database files.  Normally, database files are located on the c: drive.  In my situation, being in a high school environnement, I need to have the database files on the network drive ... lets call it g:drive.  The reason why it cannot be on c:drive is because this drive is protected using DeepFreeze.  Now, I was able to change the location of the new drive as I went into the properties window of the sql server instance but when I try to create this new database, sql gives me grief  ;-|
I am from the group of people that thinks that to anything, there is a solution and am hoping that to this problem, there is hope of a solution.
 Can anyone help?
 Thank you

Backing Up To A Non-local Drive/location

Dec 19, 2007

I've been working with SQL Server for a few years now and I've had quite a few cases where users cannot backup SQL to a network location or external hard drive. Why can SQL not do this? Is it some limitation of the speeds at which SQL needs to backup the information and the external hard drives/network drives do not meet the requirements?

Backup On Local/Network Drive Using Maintenance Plan

May 27, 2007

Hi,
I have created an sql server 2005 maintenance plan for a daily backup. The plan has two 'Back up database task' i.e. one backup on the local drive while the second on a network drive. When the plan is executed, a backup is created on the local drive but not on the network drive. If i check the log, it says "Access Denied" whereas i have full access to the network drive with complete permissions to read, write and delete.
Can anyone help me understand how to take a backup on both a local and network drive at the same time using a maintenance plan ? I shall be obliged...

SQL 2012 :: Moving TempDB To Local Non-clustered Drive

Sep 11, 2014

We are seeing very high Average Disk Queue Length numbers in one of our clusters (both nodes of the cluster are Virtual, but have their own dedicated virtual environments). Our main data drive also houses TempDB, which I would like to move.

Each node in the Active/Passive cluster are running Windows Server 2012 Standard 64bit and SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64bit. There is a separate drive for Log files and data files.

The data files also have TempDB on them as previously mentioned. I am reading that you can set up a local disk on each node of the cluster, with the same drive letter and path and then move tempdb as you would with a stand alone SQL Server.

Problem Accessing My Local A: Verses The SQL Servers A: Drive

Apr 26, 2006

I am having a problem accessing my local A: drive, using the bulk insert command. The actual sql server pc thinks I am accessing its sql server's A: and not my local a: drive. I am trying to read in a simple CSV delimited ascii file into a sql table. Wow what a nightmare just to read a simple ascii file into a table. Unfortunatley I am writing a program in VB.net for an operator to import ascii data from floppy diskettes.

I am using this command below: The command works fine but I have to go to the actual server and put the floppy disk in over there. I want the operator to be able to use there own A: or any location drive for that matter. Sql server over the network is not allowing us to access any local drive to import this data. I get an error 21 because the sql server does not have the floppy in its drive. It seems like some kind of security issue, but I am not sure. Any information would be most appreciated in this matter. Thanks in advance.

BULK INSERT Master.dbo.imVBMbAddress

Restore Clustered SQL Server 2000 From Backup On Local Drive

Aug 1, 2007

We are attempting to restore one of our databases from a backup that went to a local drive on the server.
We see the backupset in the list but receive an error that it is not available when we try to use it. When we try to restore from device and select the files the drive letter is not available. When we attempt to enter the path to the file it can't locate it. We don't have space on our SAN to copy the backup there and we can't add the local drive to the cluster resources.

Is there a way to get this backup done?

Cannot Use The Special Principle 'sa'

Jan 9, 2008

Ok, here's my issue... SQL 2005.

I have about 12 different databases, which about 4 of them are have no user mapped to it. Under the SA login, databases are mapped to the "dbo". The 4 I am having issues with have no user mapped. They are blank.

Here is where I am at... Security>Logins>sa>Login Properties>User Mapping

The columns are "Map", "Database", "User", and "Default Schema"

Here is an example of the correct Selection
Map=checked, Database=eDistribution, User=dbo, Default Schema=dbo

Now here is an example of a problem database
Map=unchecked, Database=FORMS, User=blank, Default Schema=blank

Here is the error when trying to add the "dbo" as a user

Any ideas?

Move Report File From Reporting Server Back To Local Visual Studio Project

Apr 4, 2008

I am not sure if this is possible or not, but I have to at least ask.

I have a SQL Reporting Services project that has a QA server version and then a Production server version. So when requested changes are made to the reports, I make the changes in Visual Studio and then push to QA. After the changes have been tested and approved, I then push the changes to the Production server.

I have come across an issue, where requested changes were made in Visual Studio (a lot of changes), and pushed to QA. The users now have changed their minds and they want instead to stay with what is in production. So, I am looking for a way to recover the report file on the production web server, bring it back into my visual studio project to replace the report that I had changed.

Is this possible, or will I have to start over and step one and reverse the changes in Visual Studio.

Let me know.

Thank you,

T.J.

Mirror And Witness Connection In A Disconnected State Immediately After Adding Witness Server To Mirror Session.

Jan 31, 2008

After adding the Witness Server to the Mirror session, the Witness Connection state between the Mirror and Witness Connection is Disconnected and the state between Principal and Witness Connection is Connected.

The procedures defined in Books Online was used to setup Database Mirroring...when the Witness server was added to the Mirror session, only the alter database T-SQL statement was executed on the Principal server.

ALTER DATABASE <db_name> SET WITNESS = 'TCP://<servername>:<port>'

After executing the above statement, a few seconds later the state between Principal and Witness Connection changed to Connected and the state between Mirror and Witness Connection remains Disconnected.

The Mirror session is not using Certificates, every server is on the same domain, using the same domain login account, and all servers have SP2 installed running Enterprise Edition.

Any idea's why the state between Mirror and Witness Connection remains Disconnected?

Thanks,
