Aug 27, 2015As per the old times, do we still need to have the SQL server database's data file and logfiles seprately while we are even using Fusion IO?
In my case, all the drives G and H are from Fusion IO.
So, will it really matter if both my Data and log are on G drive or should I still have them separately on G and H Drives.
Moving LogFile From One Disk To Another
Apr 11, 2002I am trying to move a logfile from one disk to another. I've detached the database, moved the logfile to another disk and reattached the database. I used the sp_detach and sp_attach_db to specify the paths of the *.MDF and *.LDF. I've tried it through Enterprise Manager and with boths ways I get an error message saying: "Error 9003: The LSN (201:48:2) passed to log scan in database 'DatabaseName' is invalid". Does anyone know what this means and how I can get around this. I've even tried to attach the database with the logfile in the original path and I still get that error. Need Help Please!

SQL Server 2008 :: TempDB Datafile Initial File Sizes Changed?
Mar 18, 2015I have an instance with 4 datafiles for tempdb each set at initial size of 4G and growth rate of 100MB. After some time the initial file sizes seem to have changed automatically. They now read 3962,100,3688 and 2847 respectively. Is this something done by SQL Server itself? I cannot imagine that it was done manually.
I don't think there was a restart after the initial sizes of 4G were set, could this be related to the problem?

Mar 20, 2002Can someone tell me how I can move the temp database. I know it get's recreated on startup so there must be somewhere that it's referencing.. Is it the model database it uses?

Moving TEMPDB Issues
Aug 22, 2002I want to move my TEMPDB from C:MSSQL7DATA to another (less critical) drive in the event it grows too much/fast. I've reviewed the process from MS using ALTER DATABASE, etc., but wanted some feedback from the real world before I commit. Are there any issues I should be aware of? I know it must reside on a local drive on the server. Do I need to make any other adjustments in SQL after the move? Your help is much appreciated. - Rob

We are supporting an mssql 6.5, sp 4 application. My associate recently
increased tempdb from 3 gb to 15 gb by adding a 12gb device on a second drive.
The original tempdb device was 3 gb on an h drive and the 12gb addition was added to the f drive limiting the disk space for the data dat file to be expanded. So now I would like to move that second tempdb device to a different drive to free up disk space on the f drive.
1) Can I move the second tempdb device?
2) Or should I try to shrink it and then expand it on a differetn drive?
3) Any other suggestions?
Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Moving TEMPDB To RAM - Problems

My tempdb size on the hard disk at the moment is 1GB.
We have recently put in an additional 1GB of RAM to add to our existing 1GB RAM on the SQL server m/c, making it 2GB now.
SQL server is configured to use 928MB of memory. So, I put the TEMPDB (1GB) on the spare (1GB) memory in RAM.
The problem is, it doesn't allow me this saying not enough memory available.
I have also set the WORK SET SIZE parm to 1, to reserve memory for SQL. Still, it will not allow me. The maximum value it allows me for TEMPDB in RAM is 384MB, beyond which the server doesn't start.
What could be the reason for not getting enough memory, though the 1GB of RAM was put in additionally just for this.
Please advise.

Moving Tempdb To Free Up Disk Space
Nov 29, 2000does anyone know if tempdb can be physically moved to a different partition on a disk drive on SQL Server 7.0? Since it can't be backed up I'm hesitant to use the sp_detach/sp_attach procedure because I don't want to crash it. If nothing else is available, I can attempt moving it this way at the end of the day and then just reboot to get tempdb back up again if the server fails, but I'd really appreciate a suggestion from someone who has more know-how than I do about system table operations. Oct 23, 2015Have a SQL2008R2 instance on a VM where the single .mdf for the tempDb database is located on a high contention disk. I've managed to get another 60GB disk and thought it would be a good time to move the .mdf and also increase it's size and number of files.
The server has 12 cores and after a bit of reading I've decided that it would be best just to have four files for this database as the 1 file per core (-1) seems to be disputed.
-- Move the existing file to the new disk and rename it.
ALTER DATABASE tempdb MODIFY FILE (NAME='tempdev', FILENAME='E:SQLData empdb0.mdf');
-- Change the size to 1GB
ALTER DATABASE tempdb MODIFY FILE (NAME='tempdev', SIZE= 1048576KB, FILEGROWTH=5%);
-- Add three new files, all with the same size & growth
ALTER DATABASE [tempdb] ADD FILE ( NAME = N'tempdev1', FILENAME = N'E:SQLData empdb1.mdf' , SIZE = 1048576KB , FILEGROWTH = 5%)

SQL 2012 :: Moving TempDB To Local Non-clustered Drive
Sep 11, 2014We are seeing very high Average Disk Queue Length numbers in one of our clusters (both nodes of the cluster are Virtual, but have their own dedicated virtual environments). Our main data drive also houses TempDB, which I would like to move.
Each node in the Active/Passive cluster are running Windows Server 2012 Standard 64bit and SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64bit. There is a separate drive for Log files and data files.
The data files also have TempDB on them as previously mentioned. I am reading that you can set up a local disk on each node of the cluster, with the same drive letter and path and then move tempdb as you would with a stand alone SQL Server.

What If The Logfile(s) Are Lost?
Nov 27, 2000Hi, maybe someone has some clues to the following situation. Suppose from a SQL 7 database, only the log .ldf files are lost. All datafiles are present. Suppose there is no backup of this database. SQL Server will put the database in the SUSPECT status. The following question is very interesting to me: Can one recover from this situation??? I ask this, because when datafiles are lost, it's obvious that you have lost data, but since the transaction log files are a "bit special", I just wonder how one can survive such a situation.
I know that IF a database has only ONE log file associated with it, and this one log file gets lost, SQL Server will create on startup a new log file. But with multiple log files, it does not behave in this sympathic manner. Is there perhaps any way to recover (for example, an undocumented dbcc command or so) ?

Shrink Logfile ?
Jun 9, 2000How do I shrink my transaction log file ? The physical file are 10Gb in size but only contains 100Mb data so I want to shrink it to save diskspace. I tried DBCC SHRINKFILE command but the file dont shrink.
Any other methods to shrink a transaction log file ? Like backup/restore ?

I am using SAP with MSSQl 2005. My transaction logfile is full. I took backup of transaction logfile and it should be truncated and shrink after the backup, but it did nothing. There is no error but the file size remain same.
I tried from SQL server management studio selecting database--right click--shrink--file. Then i try to release unused space, shrink, but not worked.
I also checked these steps while the SAP system was stopped.
Can anyone guide me what to do now?

SQL version: Microsoft SQL Server 7.00 - 7.00.699 (Intel X86)
Errorlog shows:
Starting up database 'CH2'.
Opening file E:CH2DATA1CH2DATA1.mdf.
Opening file E:CH2DATA2CH2DATA2.ndf.
Opening file E:CH2DATA3CH2DATA3.ndf.
File D:CH2LOG1CH2LOG1.ldf does not exist - unable to activate.
Enterprise Manager
Shows database CH2 (suspect)
Executing script:
sp_add_log_file_recover_suspect_db CH2, CH2LOG1, 'D:CH2LOG1CH2LOG1.ldf', 1000
Shows errormessage "The database 'CH2' does not exist."
How can i get a new logfile?
What if i created a new db 'CH2' and then replaced the data files?
What do i have to tell MSSQL to create a new logfile on startup?
All scenarios shown in Books On Line only seem to solve problems
if you do have a logfile and need more space.

Hughe Logfile After A DELETE

I have a business case where I have a database with a size of 2 GB. In my business case I want to delete 70% of the contents in the database. During the delete the size of the database(including the logfile) grows up to 10 GB. When I look on the database in the SQL Server Enterprice Manager there are only 700 MB used of these 10 GB.
The deletes are performed with ordinary SQL-statements "DELETE FROM X WHERE Y = 1 AND Z = 2..."
Thankfull for hints on how to solve this problem.
