Moving A SQL2K Publisher To A SQL 2005 Instance.

View 17 RepliesHi Everyone,
I plan to do transactional replication. The publisher/distributor is sql2005 and subscriber is sql 2000. Is that possible. Because When I setup subscriber, I keep getting "The directory service is currently unavailable" in finding sql server replications.
Thank you in advance
Hi,
We are about to alter our replication architecture from
SQL 2K publisher/SQL 2K5 distributor/subscriber
to
SQL 2K publisher, seperate SQL 2K distributor and SQL 2K5 subscriber.
The subscriptions will be pulled from the distributor and pushed to the subscriber. Basically, all the work will be done by the distributor (in the hope of improving performance).
Has anyone had any experience of a similar architecture? All SQL servers are running with the latest service packs.
Hi, I have a task in hand to migrate (upgrade) from SQL2K named instance to SQL2K5 default instance. There are many intranet applications touching current SQL2K. I would like to perform this upgrade such that I don't have to touch any application code - meaning I don't have to change the connectionstring to point to new Default instance. How can I achieve this?
So, in otherwords, here is what I want to achieve:
Current Server: SQL2K: SERVER_AINSTANCE_A (named instance)
Upgraded Server: SQL2K5: SERVERB (default instance)
If I have both default, I could achive this by setting up DNS alias after migration done so that any call for SERVER_A would point to SERVER_B. But in my case, I don't have SERVER_A, I have named instance. Is there any solution?

Vipul
I think one of my system database files is corrupted. I did an alter database... to move my Model and MSDB and now I can only start the instance with /f /t3608
I can connect to the instance but I can't do anything I get an error that one of the database files does not match it's primary file.. I don't know if it's MSDB or MODEL but I pretty much can't do anything.
I made a backup of model and msdb before I started.. how do I go about restoring them?
Followed this article to move my model and msdb databes but I think I messed up. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345408.aspx
The instance will not start because it says one of the files does not match it's primary file (not sure if it's model or msdb)
I can bring the instance up in single user mode (NET START mssqlserver /f /t3608) but when I try to do a query to re-do my alter statements, it says i can't attach because only one seesion is allowed. in 2000 i used to be able to start query analyzer without starting enterprise manager..
When i try and start with a minimal config (sqlservr -c -m) it won't start. I get an error saying that one of my files does not match it's primary file (either model or msbd don't know which) any ideas????????
I am moving a SQL 2k database from a Windows 2000 server to a Windows 2003 server (seperate appliances) and would like as little SQL downtime as possible.
I have several applications that I believe are connecting to servernow by servernow€™s name and don€™t want to have to figure out how to change them to servernew. Would it work if I built servernew and copied/moved the SQL database to servernew, then take servernow off line and change servernew€™s name to servernow?
I am open to any suggestions on other more appropriate methods.
Thanks in advance

Greetings all,This should be an easy task, and Im sure it is, but as many times as I havetried, I cant seem to get this to work properly. We changed ISPs recently from a shared host to a co-located server, and ourformer host was nice enough to send us a backup of our old SQL2000 database(about 5MB).I went into Enterprise Manager, created an empty database with the same nameand used the Restore Backup tool successfully. I took a look at the db andsaw all the Tables and data intact.Next I wanted to re-create the DSN to match the old one so that I wouldnthave to fiddle with any of the old connection strings in my asp pages.Thats where the fun began. The old DSN was created by our host via an emailrequest and I never got a look at the actual creation process of that DSN.I created one on our colo server with the same name, but it would only passthe connection tests when I used the Windows User Authentication rather thanSQL Server Authentication. No big deal I figured, and just went ahead andset it up using the same DSN name.Next I tried the main.asp page to test the DSN and lo and behold I got theODBC connection errors. I tinkered with the connection strings a bit andmanaged to get a wide variety of connection errors and fine-tuned to thepoint that it said "Unable to login with user 'SERVER169/nacog'". At thispoint, I went into Enterprise manager and added 'nacog' to the User list andthe connection string no longer produced errors. (By the way, my connectionstring simply contains "DSN=YAVAPAICONNECT;")My next step was to actually execute a SELECT statement which produced thefollowing error:Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e09'[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]SELECT permission denied onobject 'ADMINS', database 'YAVAPAICONNECT', owner 'dbo'./nacog/admin/main.asp, line 189Why was I not surprised?I went back to Enterpise Manager, saw the all the tables had 'dbo' as theowner, and tried to give 'nacog' all the permissions at the table level, butthe error persists. To preserve my sanity I stopped there, because I spun my wheels for hoursand days the last time this happened. and my eye has not stopped twitchingsince ;)I am quite sure that this has something to do with one or all of thefollowing:1) The way SQL2K was installed (it was installed by someone else)2) My creation of the db with the windows login, rather than SQL auth, priorto import3) My creation and handling of the DSNMy background is mainly in ASP programming, and I understand bits and piecesof this puzzle, but for the life of me I cannot piece this thing together. Can anyone help point me in the right direction or suggest a good tutorial?I would be very thankful to anyone who could help put me on the right track.Best Regards,Ben M.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHi everyone,
We€™ve got almost 250 old dts packages which simply loading data into Sql tables from plain files or at the reverse point. Most of them are defined with fixed fields and its fixed positions one after one. We don€™t want to migrate them using Import wizard, on the contrary we€™re producing them from the beggining taking advantatge of SSIS architecture to the full.
And now, we€™re trying to imagine how to migrate automatically that valuable info from Sql Server 2000 to Sql Server 2005 without efforts€¦ You know, any program be able to move that detailed info
to SSIS.
So we would avoid to select again all these positions per each file -very tedious and we're lazy
I don€™t see how except, of course, migrate them directly
Let me know if you need further explanations or more clarity on that.

Hello,
I spent a lot of time yesterday reading all the threads and other information I can regarding this topic, and I thought I had it figured out but I don't think I quite understand it, so I am posting here for a little clarification.
I read the following links to begin with:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1848415&SiteID=1
http://blogs.msdn.com/lcris/
I set up encryption on SQL Server instance, then backed up and restored a database to another instance on another machine. From what I have read, I thought all I needed to do was the following:
OPEN MASTER KEY DECRYPTION BY PASSWORD = '<password>'
ALTER MASTER KEY ADD ENCRYPTION BY SERVICE MASTER KEY
CLOSE MASTER KEY
I then tried to read encrypted data by doing the following:
OPEN SYMMETRIC KEY <key>
DECRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE <cert>
SELECT CONVERT(varchar, DecryptByKey(<column>)) FROM <table>
CLOSE SYMMETRIC KEY <key>
But I get the following error on when opening the symmetric key:
"An error occurred during encryption".
I tried executing these statements in various order to see if i was running them out of order but still the same error.
Obviously I have overlooked something. Can someone please shed some light on what I have missed?
Greatly appreciated...
Scott

The company for which I work did not have a DBA until I started a few weeks ago. Whoever installed SQL2K used the wrong CD so they have been running Personal Edition on their servers. I have installed a new SQL2K standard instance and have restored everything except the jobs and DTS packages. Can the msdb from the Personal edition be restored to the standard instance?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a SQL server with multiple instances on it and would like to move one of them to a drive with more storage. Â
I have SQL 2010 on a server with 2 partitions.
The database is located on the C: drive (original build) but the drive isn't partitioned to handle a db of the size that this one will grow to. I would like to move the full DB instance to another partition.
Is it possible to downgrade SQL from Enterprise to Standard Edition, or do you have to remove the previous installation (uninstall) and reinstall. Meaning you would also have to restore all user databases? Thanks.

Hi - hoping some folks here can help me. I've got a SQL 2000, Service Pack 4 database that I need to publish, but I'm getting the following error on the exec sp_addpublication statement when I try to set up publication in Management Studio:
Msg 8526, Level 16, State 2, Procedure sp_addpublication, Line 802
Cannot go remote while the session is enlisted in a distributed transaction that has an active savepoint.
I also tried to set up the Publisher in Enterprise Studio, on the theory that the system sproc was not backwards compatible, and there I got this error:
Error 627: Cannot use SAVE TRANSACTION within a distributed transaction
There is one proc in the publisher's database that uses SAVE TRANSACTION, but it isn't currently being run and it isn't dependent on the table being published. Has anybody else encountered this? Any ideas about how to make this go away?
Where can I found information on how its works and how to do it?
I tried to do it but I always received an error message
hi,
Im I want to configure my sqlserver 2005 server as both subscriber and distributor for transactional replication purposes.
I want to configure the sql server 2000 as the publisher.
When I try to configure the publisher in the sql 2000 server, Im not being able to establish the connection with the distributor 2005 sql server in any of the 2 possible cases.
case1-Using windows authentication- message:need to use management studio or SMO
case2-Using sql server authentication-message:authentication failed
Question:
Is it possible at all to do this? or should I make the distributor to reside in a sql 2000 server?
thank you
For transactional replication, are there any issues and is it even possible to have 32-bit SQL 2000 publisher and SQL 2005 64-bit distributor and subscriber? Thanks
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am receiving the following error message when trying to create a new Oracle Publisher.
Msg 21684, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_ORACheckAdminPrivileges, Line 136
The permissions associated with the administrator login for Oracle publisher 'NT02' are not sufficient.
We have added the following permissions manually (not through a role) in Oracle:
CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM and DROP PUBLIC SYNONYM
CREATE PROCEDURE
CREATE SEQUENCE
CREATE SESSION
CREATE ANY TRIGGER.
CREATE TABLE
CREATE VIEW
And we have also tried the Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server<InstanceName>MSSQLInstalloracleadmin.sql script.
In both cases we are receiving the error message above. The only way we seem to be able to get around the error is to grant the DBA role to the replication schema user, which doesn't seem right.
Has anybody run into this problem before? How did you get around the problem?
Also is there a way to view sp_ORACheckAdminPrivileges because it's doesn't seem to be viewable anywhere in the database? This would at least let us know what it's looking for from an Oracle standpoint.
Help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I want to have transactional replication setup with SQL 2000 as a publisher and SQL Express 2005 as a subscriber? Where can I get some documentation around that?
Basically, the problem I am stuck with is that while registering the subscriber in SQL2000, SQL2000 cannot recognize my SQL Express 2005 instance as a subscriber. I have tried both SQL Ent. Mgr. and sp_addsubscription.
Please help.

We have a SQL 2000 Server (publisher & distributor) with around 15 databases being replicated (all using merge replication).
My question is the following:
Is it possible to perform Merge replication from a SQL 2000 (acting as the publisher & distributor) to a SQL 2005 server acting as the Subscriber)?
If anyone has a link to any instructions somewhere that would be great.
Thanks
Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to setup replication between a 2005 SQL Publisher and a 2000 SQL Subscriber? Is there any special setup steps I need?
Thanks so much,

View 6 Replies View RelatedFrom the SSMS GUI it is possible to re-initialize one or all subscriptions to a merge publication. This is done at the publisher.
How can I achieve these operations programmatically?
In particular, how do I initialize a single merge subscription from the publisher?
I have looked at the documentation for sp_reinitmergepullsubscription but it says that this proc must be run at the subscriber - which isn't much use when subscribers are disconnected for the majority of the time
I have a large number of merge subscribers and want to reinitialize all except one

We have a current install of SQL2005 Developer on a Win 2003 Server Enterprise and it works as advertised. It is accessed as Test05
Yesterday a SQL2000 Developer Edition was also installed on the same Server as named instance Test05Test052000.
The 2000 seems to start and run OK and can be connect to by Management studio etc from that same box. However it can not be connect to via the network. Any ideas?

But its usefull to see all 3agents in one window under publisher before. What happend? Is there anyway to get that inside that monitor? Has someone encountered thissitation before? View 2 Replies View RelatedHi all,
here is the context of our problem:
- Publisher :
version SQL Server 2005 SP2
table in SQL Server 2000 (80) compatibility level
publication in SQL Server 2000 compatibility level
- Distributor : SQL Server 2005 SP2
- Subscriber : SQL Server 2000 SP4 + hotfixes (version 8.00.2187)
There is only one article in our publication (a simple table with a GUID and a nvarchar(50) columns), and we have left the default resolver.
1 - The first synchronization of the subscription is successfully completed, and it is the same for the different updates/inserts/deletes or conflicts.
2 - Then we change the Resolver of our article by our own COM-Based Custom Resolver (developped in C# 2.0). This resolver only change the default behaviour: the subscriber always win (this is for a test, in the future we will have a complex business logic). All the synchronizations works fine and do what we want in the conflicts.
3 - We rollback the resolver to the default one... and here is the problem!
The synchonizations stop to work correctly. For all of them we've got the same error:

It is no more possible to synchronize this subscription... Any remark will be helpfull cause we did not find anything on the net concerning this error.
Thanks a lot!
The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However, I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.
Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated
Thanks...
