I made a test local SQL database from inside visual c# express edition. I now want to port that over to sql server 2005.
Q: How can this be done?
I tried to detach the loca database in the bin drive in my dot net project and then attach it using sql server attach option.
This does not work.. I keepo gettind an error that the database is empty.
Or maybe I am not doing it right.
Q: If this can not be done is there a way to generate the scripts so that I do not have to redo this extensive database again?
Hopefully some SQL procedures were let intact and the learning curve from 2003 is not as fustrationg as the C# version.
Any helpful remarks or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.
How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?
I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.
Current Setup Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)
It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.
The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.
This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.
Will this work. 1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company. 2.Move the database to the server. 3.Setup the users permissions. 3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.
So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?
Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.
One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.
Hi All, I am completely new to VS2005 and .net2.0 but I am learning fast! But one thing that I am struggling with is the deployment of my website, or to be more precise the deployment of the data that was created during development on my local machine. I have used VS2005 to create a simple personal site. I have created a single user (myself) in an admin and friends role. So far so good. The site works great on my local machine, all the default photos provided with the site display correctly etc and I can log in OK. My remote server (ie my web hosts) provide me with a separate SQL server on which to install my databases. I have created a database on this server and configured it so that it contains all the correct tables and schemas etc. I have modified my web config file to connect to this database and when I browse to my default.aspx page it displays in my browser fine...EXCEPT that none of the data ( ie the photos and user data) is in the database so therefore no pictures display and I can't log in!! What I can't figure out is how do I get all the data from my local app_data folder into my new remote database!!?? I can't find anything that explains how to do this. Surely this is one of the most important operations of all since data is what .net2.0 is all about! Thanks in anticipation
Hi boys and girls, I am a total newbie to ms sql. So please be gentle.
I have a ms sql database on one server but I need a duplicate of the ms sql database on another server with all packages and jobs duplicated on the new server.
I was able to export the database over to the new database on the new server no problems there.
The problem is under DTS I have "local packages" that all need to be moved to the new server. I am able to export them into my computer. But on the new server there is no import for the local packages. How do I get these packages onto the new server into my server's ms sql???
Also under the management and sql agent manager, there are jobs that are on the old db, that I need to go to the new server in ms sql.
We are seeing very high Average Disk Queue Length numbers in one of our clusters (both nodes of the cluster are Virtual, but have their own dedicated virtual environments). Our main data drive also houses TempDB, which I would like to move.
Each node in the Active/Passive cluster are running Windows Server 2012 Standard 64bit and SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64bit. There is a separate drive for Log files and data files.
The data files also have TempDB on them as previously mentioned. I am reading that you can set up a local disk on each node of the cluster, with the same drive letter and path and then move tempdb as you would with a stand alone SQL Server.
I am facing a problem in connecting to the local database with server name as (local).
I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my machine. When I try to connect to the SQL server with the server name as SUNILKUMAR I am able to connect but when I try to connect to the same server with the server name as (local) I am not able to connect. SUNILKUMAR is my machine name and SQL server is running locally.

I'm using SQL Server Management Studio Express and I'm trying to figure out how to copy a table(s) from my local database to my web hosting database. I know how to do it in 2000, but it's completely different now. Is this feature not allowed on SSMSE? If so, then how do I deploy database tables to a web host?Also, how do you add local database(s) to SSMSE? I tried to use 'attach database' in SSMSE and it wouldn't allow me to navigate to My Documents folder where the database resides. Thanks...
I have my first small SQl Server 2005 database developed on my localserver and I have also its equivalent as an online database.I wish to update the local database (using and asp.net interface) andthen to upload the data (at least the amended data, but given thesmall size all data should be no trouble) to the online database.I think replication is the straight answer but I have no experience ofthis and I am wondering what else I might use which might be lesscomplicated. One solution is DTS (using SQL 2000 terms) but i am notsure if I can set this up (1) to overwrite existing tables and (2) notto seemingly remove identity attributes from fields set as identities.I know there are other possibilities but I would be glad of advice asto the likely best method for a small database updated perhaps onceweekly or at less frequent intervals,Best wishes, John Morgan
We have a SQLSERVER database that is replicated to many users.We are currently in an expansion phase where we need to make changesto the server database. Each time we rollout a new release, we aredeleting the local replicating database and recreating.Is there any way to automatically transfer the changes from the serverto existing local database without deleting?
How do I insert data that I have collected in a local database onto a table on my online ie hosted database which is on a different server?
At the moment I am just uploading all the data to the hosted DB but this is wasting bandwith as only a small percentage of data is actually selected and used.

Hi I want to transfer a database from one PC to another. (Both running SQL Server 2005 express) I have copied the files (SQL Server Database Primary Data File and SQL Server Database Transaction Log File) from the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData folder of the source PC to the destination PC (Same folder). I was under the impression that using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - SQL Server Management Studio Express these files would be picked up and could be used, do I infact need to do something to attach the files/database so that they will appear in SQL Server management?

I have two computers, both with SQL Express 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I created a database on one computer, and need to copy it to the other computer. I'd like to do it all through the Management Studio interface, without using SQL commands, since I only need to do this manually.
I detached the two files, copied them to the second computer, and tried to attach them. This is generating lots of messages about not having the necessary permissions of various sorts. I think the main problem is that I don't know how to set up the database's users in a way that allows the second computer to attach the database.
I've tried Windows authentication, using a Windows user that has the same name and password on both computers, and I've defined that Windows user as a user within the database. I've connected to SQL when logged in as that user. I've tried SQL authentication also, defining the same SQL user within both SQL Servers, as db_owner. But when I try to attach the database, I see no place to specify the user that I intend it to use, and it still fails. If I connect to SQL as that user, then SQL doesn't have permission to look at the file system to find the MDF file.
I'd appreciate the help in learning how to do this with both Windows authentication and SQL authentication, via the Management Studio's GUI. Most of the documentation I've seen covers how to do it by using SQL language commands, and I'd like to avoid that.
Hi all, I have an Ms Access table and a MsSql table. I am running a windows service in my localhost where the data from Ms access table will be copied to Ms sql table for every one minute. Before copying the data, the Ms sql table will be flushed inorder to avoid replicates. Now i want to copy only the latest records updated within 1 min in Ms access table, to Ms sql table. I have a SQL Server 2005 Express database on my local machince called OpenAssess.mdf. The server we host with has a file extension of .mdb. How can I go about getting my database to the server? I tried changing the extension to mdb on the local machine but then it tried opening the database in MS Access and didn't work. I just need to connect to the database in my web pages. On 11/10/01 I posted a question on how to move passwords from one sql2000 box to another. The response to this question worked perfectly.
I also need to copy over the user or database access information from one box to another. I tried to use dts but it only copied over the users and the database roles but did not copy over the Database user properties which allows the user access and places the user into security groups.
I want to move my tempdb database to another drive by moving the mdf and ldf files . Is it possible to shift the tempdb once it is created ? I am shifting the database since there is no space on the current drive and the database might grow in the near furure .

i got few questions. i need to move a databases from old server to new server. old server has 25 user databases total datafile around 300GB. heres the questions.
1. what is the fastest way to move all the data to new server? and what's the best way to do it? (DTS? MDF copy over/attach? bak copy over/restore? other theres other way?)
2. i got alot of job and user need to transfer over. i know DTS can do the user.. how about the jobs?
3. do i need to move the master and msdb over too?
4. beside all 3 questions above... do i miss anything that need to be move too?
Hi, I have a database that resides on a server that`s become too old. It spans 2 devices that sit on 2 different drive letters - D: and E:. I bought a new server, installed and configured NT4.0 and SQL6.5. Initially I restored the database to the new server from a dump .It worked fine, however all the login information was lost. Then I tried partitioning the new server the same way as the old one and copying all the DAT files over. Thus I was hoping to retain the information contained in the MASTER.DAT, drop the database, repartition to create 1 physical drivewith 1 database device, and restore from a dump to it. After copying the DATs, though, SQL Server would not start. Help Please!
