Mssql Equivalent Of Mysql Merge Storage Engine
May 13, 2008
Hi,
Mysql database provides a storage engine called "MERGE".A "MERGE" table is a collection of identical tables that can be used as one.(Identical meaning same column name,column width, column order etc.) .
The advantage is you can split a really huge table like LOG tables, STATS tables into seperate smaller tables but would still be able to make queries on them like a single table. More details, can be got from here:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/merge-storage-engine.html
My question is that do we have an equivalent of MYSQL "MERGE" in MSSQL ????
Thanks,
:)

I have an internal Project Management and Scheduling app that I wrote internally for my company. It was written to use MySQL running on a Debian server, but I am going to move it to SQL Server 2000 and integrate it with our Accounting software. The part I am having trouble with is the user login portion. I previously used this:
PHP Code:
$sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = "$username" AND user_password = password("$password")";
Apparently the password() function is not available when accessing SQL Server via ODBC. Is there an equivalent function I could use isntead so the passwords arent plaintext in the database? I only have 15 people using the system so a blank pwd reset wouldn't be too much trouble.

I am looking for the MS SQL equivalent of MySQL LIMIT.
I know that the code in MySQL is
SELECT col_name FROM tbl_name LIMIT x,y
where x = the starting row and y = the offset
E.g. SELECT movie_name FROM my_movies LIMIT 10,5
This will give me the records from 11-15
I would like to know what is the MS SQL equivalent for the above?

In mySQL for example i could have:
ORDER BY ID DESC LIMIT 5,25
where it would start from 5'th row found and return up to 25 rows.
How do i achieve the same in Transact-SQL? The LIMIT 5, 25 part.

Hi there,
I am trying to find an equivalent to the MySQL function mysql_num_rows() that returns the number of rows returned in a result set.
I only found COUNT, but that doesnt work...
I am working on a web authentication system. The User enters UN and PW, which is then checked with the DB.
<?PHP
//connect to the mssql server
xxx
//select the database to use
xxx
// query
$query = "SELECT * from $table WHERE username='$username' AND pwd='$pwd'";
$result=@mssql_query ($query);
$bla=COUNT($result);
echo $bla; // just to see if it works
if ($bla=1)
{
echo ("welcome $username");
}
elseif ($bla!=1)
{
echo ("auth required");
}
?>
$bla always returns 1... regardless of the UN and PW have been entered and whether they match an entry in the DB
Any thoughts?
cheers.

Hey,
My team is currently building a system for the Windows CE 5.0 platform that uses a SQL CE database to synchronize with a SQL Server 2005 database. During this synchronization process, the application needs to pull down a good bit of data and it reaches its cap for memory. A possible solution for this is to use an SD card for storing the database. However, when the Synchronization process is run, the following SQL Exception Occurs:

The connection string we're using for the Mobile Database is "data source=Storage CardDatabase.sdf"
Has anyone ever had any problems when trying to perform Merge/Replication on expandable Flash Memory and if so, how did you solve them?

I am developing an online web-based address book for multiple users. There are STANDARD FIELDS and CUSTOM FIELDS.
Standard fields include: Name,Street,City,State,Zip.
Custom fields are those defined by a specific user. For example:
User-A Custom fields:
Interest Rate <real>
Loan Amount <currency>
Start date <date>
User-B Custom fields:
Blood type <char 3>
Date of birth <date>
Referred by <varchar 50>
Different users can have different custom fields in their address book. As you can see, while the standard fields for each user can be
stored in a single table. However, I have several methods by which I can store the CUSTOM fields.
------------------------------------------------
Method 1: Create 2 separate tables called CustomField and CustomValue:
CustomField has fields:
FieldID <int>
FieldName <varchar 25>
UserID <int>
CustomValue has fields:
ValueID <int>
Value <varchar 50>
FieldID <int>
------------------------------------------------
Method 2: Create a separate Field and multiple Value tables for each data type:
CustomField, CustomCharValue, CustomIntValue, CustomMoneyValue, etc...
CustomField has fields:
FieldID <int>
FieldName <varchar 25>
FieldType <smallint> (determines which TABLE, below, contains the data)
UserID <int>
CustomCharValue
CharValueID <int>
IntValue <Varchar 50>
FieldID <int>
CustomIntValue
IntValueID <int>
IntValue <int>
FieldID <int>
etc....etc...
The structures of those tables would be similar to Method 1, but the data would be segregated based on their data type.
--------------------------------------------------
I'm thinking that while Method 1 will be easier to implement, Method 2 may offer me better performance if coded correctly. I'm going
to assume that I'll have at least 1-5 million records to work with over the course of my first year and I will need the ability to sort
records based on values in the custom fields as well.
My first question is: Which method should I be considering and is there an alternative or hybrid that I should be considering?
My second question is: What statements should I use in my stored procedure that will enable me to
retrieve a list of USERID, CustomFieldIDs and their values as one resulting table that I can query at will and with solid performance?

I 've read that there is a workaround for this issue by customizing errors at processing time but I am not glad to have to ignore errors, also the cube process is scheduled so ignore errors is not a choice at least a good one.
This is part of my cube where the error is thrown.
DimTime
PK (int)MyMonth (int, Example = 201501, 201502, 201503, etc.) Another Columns
FactBudget
PK (int)Month (int, Example = 201501, 201502, 201503, etc.)
I set the relation between DimTime and FactBudget doing DimTime MyMonth as Primary Key and FactBudget Month as Foreign Key.
The cube built without problem, when processing the errror: The attribute key cannot be found when processingwas thrown.
It was thrown due to FactBudget has some Month values (201510, 201511, 201512 in example) which DimTime don't, so the integrity is broken.
My actual question: is there a way or pattern to redesign this DWH to correctly deploy and process?

Hello all,
I spent the last two days trying to find an application that can export a mySQL database into msSQL syntax so that I can then use that to just create my msSQL database. I have had no such luck, though I could find a bunch to do msSQL to mySQL.
Please let me know if anyone has one or knows of one that works because I really do not want to hand port my 70 table database from mySQL to msSQL
Thanks in advance,

Hi, I've been coding in C#/ASP.NET for a little while now, but I've only ever used MS SQL.I'm starting a new project at work soon, and our host provides free MySQL databases but charges for MS SQL databases.
What are the pros/cons for each of these databases, and how much conversion would be required in an existing C#/ASP.NET application if I wanted to change from MS SQL to MySQL? I assume the syntax/commands to operate a C# app with MS SQL are different to the ones required to communicate with a MySQL database?
I'll probably stick with MS SQL because it's what I know, but I'd like to get familiar with MySQL as it might come in handy one day.Thanks, any information is greatly appreciated.

I'm converting to mssql. I've been using the following statement in a php query with mysql.
$result = mysql_query ("SELECT * FROM inks i, sample s, customer c, press pr WHERE s.JobNum like '$JobNum%' and c.CustName like '$CustName%' and pr.PressID like '$PressID%' and s.InkID like'$InkID%' and c.CustNum=s.CustNum and pr.PressID=s.PressID and i.InkID=s.InkID and s.Bindery like'%$Bindery%'");
This allowed me to select a press and/or certain paper and/or certain ink, etc. Allowed me to select any combination needed to find.
Now when I use this statement I don't get any results. I have the following which works if I select items in all categories, but that isn't always possible. I need a wildcard selection if we don't know or don't care what press it was run on or what paper was run on a press or what ink was used to print, etc
$result = mssql_query ("SELECT * FROM text t, cover cv, sample s, customer c, press p WHERE (s.PressID like '$PressID' and p.PressID = s.PressID and c.CustNum=s.CustNum and t.TextPaperID=s.PaperTextID and cv.CoverPaperID=s.PaperCoverID) and (s.PaperTextID = '$TextPaperID' and t.TextPaperID=s.PaperTextID and p.PressID = s.PressID and c.CustNum=s.CustNum and cv.CoverPaperID=s.PaperCoverID) and (s.PaperCoverID = '$CoverPaperID' and t.CoverPaperID=s.PaperCoverID and p.PressID = s.PressID and c.CustNum=s.CustNum and cv.TextPaperID=s.PaperTextID) order by CustName");
I'm lost
Thanks For the help.

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a function in MSSQL that performs similar to the LIMIT function in MySQL. Here is the LIMIT function's definition:
The LIMIT clause can be used to constrain the number of rows returned by the SELECT statement. LIMIT takes one or two numeric arguments, which must be integer constants.
With two arguments, the first argument specifies the offset of the first row to return, and the second specifies the maximum number of rows to return. The offset of the initial row is 0 (not 1):
mysql> SELECT * FROM table LIMIT 5,10; # Retrieve rows 6-15
I am aware of TOP and SET ROWCOUNT functions in MSSQL but neither provide the Offset functionality.
Any help would be appreciated,
Piet

Hi everybody,
I have to port a database from MSSQL to MySQL.
I'm really a newbie with MSSQL and I need some hints on how to do this task.
I received a .bak file which my boss told me that this a backup of the database
I have to port.
Then I installed MSQL 2000 developer edition on my workstation and then started
playing with it.
The problem is that I don't know how to connect to the database... and with what
application do some queries. In mysql I use phpMyAdmin which is really useful.
Is there something similar for SQL server? Or something like sqlplus under Oracle?
Moreover how can I install the .BAK file they sent me on my MSSQL install in order
to recreate the db on my workstation??
Thank you.

Hi all.
My goal is to make from time to time a (one way) replication from MSSQL server (Win2K) to MySQL (Linux, i mean no ODBC here).
Is it possible and how ?
The preferable way is to use the MSSQL's replication features, but I have another idea - a simple (php, perl - no matter) program on the linux machine which will be "cron"-ed to run at the requested time intervals.
What are your recommendings ?
Thanks in advance for every kind of help.
