Mulitple Database Connections Vs Single Connection?
Apr 16, 2008
I have a DLL that acts as an interface between the application and the database. So you create a new instance to the database via:
MyDatabaseClass db = new MyDatabaseClass()
Each instance of the class creates a new connection to the database.
So if I were to have the following, then 4 connections would be made.
MyDatabaseClass db1 = new MyDatabaseClass()
MyDatabaseClass db2 = new MyDatabaseClass()
MyDatabaseClass db3 = new MyDatabaseClass()
MyDatabaseClass db4 = new MyDatabaseClass()
My question is...What if instead of creating new connections upon each instantiation, I re-use the same connection through a "ConnectionManager" class. In this way, the above code will only create 1 connection instead of 4.
What do you guys think about each approach? Obviously the 2nd approach makes sense for non-web applications, but what about websites? Would that just cause that single connection to be overloaded??
Thanks for any insights.

Hi,
I'm fairly new to the SSIS world, and I've recently ported a bunch of dts packages over to SSIS. I'm an ASP.NET developer so I'm very familiar with the capabilities that configuration files give you, and I attempted to set up my solution as follows:
All of my "Data Sources" are at the project level, and added (with the same name) to each package. I wanted to have a single config file that had all of the project-level settings (i.e. connection strings, data file paths, etc). I then have a config for each package with the package level settings - i.e. variables, etc.
The problem becomes that all packages do not use all data sources. This results in an error when I try to open up a package for editing, it complains that it doesn't have a reference to data source XYZ that it is seeing in the configuration file.
Is there any way that I can get around this? If I have a password to a database change, I don't want to have to look through every config file and change it in multiple places.

Dear All,
I like to know if anyone of you out there can help me solve this issue. I need to generate an SQL Query to access two different FOXPro (databases) connections.
Example,
Connection 1 - has a DSN setup of CMSBM and it sits in the path of D:/CMS/CMSBM/= and the table is bmboml15
Connection 2 - has a DSN setup of CMSMA and it sits in the path of
D:/CMS/CMSMA/= and the table is maprodl15
I am coding in ASP.NET using C#. I have tried the command like:
SELECT codeno, link, type FROM bmboml15 IN CMSBM INNER JOIN maprodl15 IN CMSMA ON bmboml15.codeno = maprodl15.codeno.
Obviously the above query is not a working one and a very poor construction.
Please help!
Thanks

I have a DB that is currently not normalized and will be getting about 100K concurrent users that will mostly be doing Read-Only operations from multiple tables.
I am trying to figure out if I should start thinking of having a DB per client (1000 clients) or if I should normalize the database and keep it as a single DB with good indexes and partitioning.
Hardware is not a problem but 100K concurrent users is.

Dear members,I'am thinking about the "best" way to connect to my sql-server viaADO.Net (if there is a best way).My application uses the sql-server very intensively. At the momentevery database-operation opens a connection, executes and then closesthe connection.Another way would be to use only a single connection to the database,which is opened when the application starts.What do you think is the better way to get a high performing sqlserver: using one single application connection vs. using oneconnection for every operation?Cheers, Sebastian

I've got a package which reads a text file into a table and updates another. I set up configurations so that I could import it into the SSIS store on both my dev and live servers. Now, I'm getting this error. I tried removing the configs and am still getting it.
I've been through each step and everything looks okay. Does anyone have any idea (a) what's wrong, (b) how to localise the error or (c) get any additional information? Or do I just have to recreate the package from scratch?

Hi
I have seen the threads already in here about connections and SQL Server but I too am having a connection pool problem.
I am explicitly making a connection, creating a command object, executing a datareader then closing the command and then disposing the connection. The connection just prior to the dispose is definately closed.
However when I do an sp_who in SQL Server the connection is still listed. I have a connection timeout of 30 seconds, so I am considering reducing this to 5 seconds but dont wish to. So therefore when a process is called repeatedly instead of using an existing connection in the pool, it thinks that this connection is still active and therefore creates a new connection. Because all of this is in an ascx, I cant code for one connection to stay open for all 30 instances of the control.
This is a problem because I am creating controls at run time and using page.databind and at that point, I exceed the connection pool and therefore the site crashes out to the "SQL Server Timeout" error.
Anyone else seen this?

Within a data flow I have a script component that I want to perform some data calls from. I want to execute SQL commands to connections already defined in the package's connection manager.
Is there a way to set my script's connection variable to the connection manager connection? Or, can I use the connection manager connections directly from within the script?

For some reason, when I try to delete old DB connections from the connection manager, it causes compilation errors because it is not removing the references from the meta data. I get Object ID errors where it is still trying to find the connection after it has been deleted. I have tried going to the code behind and searching then deleting the invalid reference, but that still does not work. I have a connection for 2 totally different databases that are no longer being used in the SSIS package and I would like to get rid of them.
Suggestions?

Hello.
I have a db dal containing the following code:
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
cmd.Connection = dbc;
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.CommandText = "SOME STORED PROCEDURE";
.
.
.
declare some SqlParameters
.
.
.
dbc.Open();
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
dbc.Close();
This code, when concurrently running via several threads, yields the following exception:
"The connection was not closed. The connection's current state is open."
My questions are:
1. Why don't .Net allocate another connection from the pool (I try to only concurrently run 2 threads while there are 25 connections in the connection pool) ?
2. How can one explicitly allocate a connection?
3. How do you suggest to solve this problem without a mutex/monitor etc' on the 3 bold lines above and without BeginExequteNonQuery()?
Thank you !

class CallSp1
{static void Main()
{
// create connection
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(@"server = .centrinosqlexpress;

try
{
// open connection
conn.Open();
// create command
SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand();// specify stored procedure to executecmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.CommandText = "sp_select_employees_details";
// execute command
SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader();
// process the result setwhile (rdr.Read())
{Console.WriteLine("{0} {1} {2}",rdr[0].ToString().PadRight(5),rdr[1].ToString(),rdr[2].ToString());
}
rdr.Close();
}catch (SqlException ex)
{Console.WriteLine(ex.ToString());
}
finally
{
conn.Close();
}
}

}
The build indicates no errors but the dos output gives the following error:

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Is this an intrinsic issue?

When i check the active connections on the sql server, some times i see 157 active connections, please how to i set a timeout or connection interval close, so as reduce the heavy load being put on the server. Or how can i automatically close connections when they get higher than 50 connections.
This settings should be sql server 2008 related.

If I include the app database in an AlwaysOn availability group with a read-intent replica will SQL automatically route the “selects” to that second instance thus offloading my application’s reporting activities or I need a separate db connection (maybe from a reporting app or cli) with a connection specifying read-only intent?

I am trying to join two tables on multiple fields. But the nulls aren't considered a match so they aren't included in the results set.
Select A.Lot, A.Block, A.Plan, B.Key
from A join B on
A.Lot=B.Lot
A.Block=B.Block
A.Plan=B.Plan
In the data, there can be an instance where Block is null in both tables so it "matches" but not in SQL. How do I get the "matched" nulls to be returned as well?

I Have three tables
TASK
taskid, taskname, projectid, workid
1,,1,1
2,,1,2
3,,2,3
PROJECT
projectid, projectname
1, project1
2, project2
3, project3
WORK
workid, workname
1,work1
2,work2
3,work3
I need to do an update this way
Update the taskname as 'projectname' + '_' + 'workname' for any projectid.
projectname and workname coming from the projectid and workid in the task record
so the task table becomes
1,project1_work1,1,1
2,project1_work2,1,2
3,project2_work3,2,3
I can get all the records doing this
SELECT p.projectname+ ' ' + w.workname AS 'NEWNAME'
FROM task t
JOIN work w
ON t.workid = w.workid
JOIN project p
ON t.projectid = p.projectid
WHERE projectid = 2
how do i do an UPDATE?

is it possible to use a single connection object shared by severaltasks where each task is handled by a thread? these tasks call storedprocedures that return record sets, no editing, update or delete.my objective is that db connection is expensive and each user can onlyhave 1 connection object. each user submits a request to the webserver, and the result web page construction consists of a number ofresult sets obtained from several stored procedure from the samedatabase instance.i could obtained my result sets by making each sp call one at a timebut was thinking whether i could instead break up the tasks, create athread for each task that shares the same db connection objectconcurrently. the connection object will be alive until all tasks arecompleted, that is if the final object ive could be achieved in ashorter time. No connection pooling here.i am wondering over questions like:1. within the same db instance, if 2 stored procedures need to accessthe same table, does SQLserver queue-up and service one request at atime.2. would there be any problem using the connection object this way,sharing between multiple theads?3. is it possible that a 'dead-lock' may occur within the DB?of cos this whole idea can be absurd and into the trash if theconnection object doesn't support multi-thread and is queue based inthe first place.pardon me if my SQL server basics is off track. been doing too manyother things.thanks,meng

Hey everyone,
I am beggining in SQL and the .NET framework and have been running into some problems trying to design a relational database. I am completely new to it so I bought a book that was recommended in this Forum called "Handbook of Relational Database Design" and it has been pretty usefull so far. RIght now I am trying to make the Logical Data Model before I make the Relational Data Model.
The problem that I am having right now is creating a table that is a derivation from another table. For example, in the book they have a table called Property, and then two other tables called MountainProperty and BeachProperty. MountainProperty and BeachProperty are a type (relationship here) of a property. So basically Property will hold some data in a table, and then MountainProperty and BeachProperty will extend that property to contain more specific data. This is very similar to what I want to do. However I am having a problem understanding how an instance (or row) in Property, will have a link (foreign key) to a piece of data that is in Mountain or BeachProperty. I understand the foreign key in Mountain and BeachProperty and how they will link back to their "parent". But how will Property know its children, where is the link for that, how can one make a link to that. You could make a column with a foreign key, but which table would it point to, can one column point to mulitple tables? That doesn't make very much sense to me.
Basically what I am trying to say is that a row in the Property table can be multiple types, and these types will store more additional data about that row. How can I link to that data from that row in the Table Property.
I am terribly sorry if this is confusing or if it is so appartently easy for you, but this is the first time that I have ever tried to make a relational database and I am really struggling on seeing how to organize these tables properly. Thank yor for your time.

I did some research on resetting the total page, but their solution doesnt work on my special case (very complicate..). A similiar work out also apperciate.
