Multi-Domain Replication

Feb 5, 2004

Hi All:

Within Multiple SQL2K Standard installs...

Got trouble replicating (Push OR Pull) between 2 Domains. Subscriber cannot access the Snapshot - unable to login using EITHER Win or SQl/sa

One interesting issue - to register Servers in E-Manager, we need to use FULL Domain name > ie. ServerName.Domain.com nothing else will do.

If I can register a new server with JUST Name, then I can get it to work.

We need to apply this across a VPN to overseas office(s) next.

Thanks for your Help

2005 Replication Outside My Domain Errors

Apr 11, 2007

I currently have replication (transactional) set up within my domain successfully using 2000 and 2005.
I need to start replicating to a hosting center for a web app from my server out on the DMZ. I can use SSIS and SMS to connect, update data, etc. but when I try to replicate out there it gives me the following errors:

1. Tells me it needs a named instance so I give it the hosted server name : ABC123

2. Then I get the following:

TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------

Cannot connect to ABC123.

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Failed to connect to server ABC123. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

------------------------------

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Setting Up Merge Replication Without Domain User

Aug 15, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to set up Web Synchronization using Merge Replication. The Distributor and Publisher are on the same machine. Subscriber is a windows mobile application which syncs the data using web synchronization. I have configured IIS on web server for the sync. However there is no domain user on database and web server. Is it possible set up web sync without a domain user? Which user can I then use to give permissions on the snapshot share folder.

Any help is appreciated.

Replication From Machine Not In Domain To Machine In A Domain

Jul 11, 2007

Hi

I'm trying to set up replication from one SQL server to another.

The publishing server is not a member of a domain and is located in a hosting center (but we have full control over the server). I can set up a Snapshot publication just fine.

The subscribing server is located in another remote location and is a member of a domain. Here I can also set up the subscription without errors.

The errors, I think, comes when the snapshot is about to be created, the error is, on the publisher server:

[298] SQLServer Error: 18456, Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. [SQLSTATE 28000]

And the snapshot is not created.

Is it even possible to set up replication like this. I need to transfer the data from one sql server to another so we have a working "backup" so to speek if the other server does not respond.

Replication: Transactional: Multi Publications, One Subscriber.

Jul 20, 2005

Greetings All, I was hoping that a replication sage might be able toanswer a question for me.I want to have one subscriber subscribing to N publishers. Iessentially have a company that has a main headquarters and threesatellite offices. I want each of the satellite offices to push theirdata up to the master database. From what I have read it seems likethis should not be a problem. Some questions that come to mind are:1.)Does the master need to be read only or can it be configured to beupdateable as well?2.)Can the distribution agent on all the publishers be set tocontinuously distribute or should it be staggered so as not to cause aproblem when another distribution agent is running?3.)If the distribution is set to "delay distribution" will this causechanges on the subscriber to be pushed out to the publishers? In this database guid's are used as pk's so the issue of pk collisionsis not a problem.I hope that this question is not too vague. My experience thus farwith replication has been simple one way transactional and simplemerge replication.Regards, Louis Frolio

Multi Instance Sql Server 2000, Coexistence SP3-SP4, Replication Issue?

Feb 1, 2007

Hi,
I've went throught the SP4 documentation but I didn't find a clear answer about how to deal with this situation:
In the situation of a multi instances server in which all instances are SP3a, can I just upgrade a couple of instances to SP4 and leave the others in SP3a ? .
One of the instances I may have to leave in SP3a belongs to a merge replication environnement (Distributor and Publisher), while the Subscriber is also in SP3 on a remote server (which I don't administer..).(the point is that in this situation I have to upgrade the 2 servers simultaneously)
In other words, when I 'll apply the SP4 to just one instance, I understood that the all the tools will be upgraded to SP4.

Will the merge replication involving a SP3 instance on the same server still work?

Thanks for your comments/replies/ideas.

jalal

User On Trusted Domain Does Have Permission To Access Linked Server On AD Deployed In Another Domain

Sep 28, 2007

Hi,
We have the followoing:

-A "master domain" AD, a "sub domain" AD, a trust relationship between the two (sub trust master)
-A sql server 2005 on a win server 2003 in "sub domain" AD
-A linked server to "sub domain" AD
-A linked server login using a "sub domain" admin acccount
-A view to this linked server
-A grant on masterDomain/Domain Users to the database
-A grant on subDomain/Domain Users to the database
-We want all connections done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".

Queries on the view work fine using "sub domain" user accounts.
Queries on the view fail using "master domain" user accounts (including master domain admin accounts)

"Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation."

All connections are done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".

Can we establish cross domain connectivity with "Windows Authentication" ?

Below are details of the implementation:

SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT *
FROM OPENQUERY(ADSI,
'SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn (etc...)
FROM ''LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com''
WHERE objectCategory = ''Person'' AND objectClass = ''user'' ')

EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname ='ADSI', @useself='false',
@rmtuser='subDomainAdminAccnt', @rmtpassword='sunDomainAdminAccntPassword';

In SQL Server Mngt Studio in Server Objects/Linked Servers/Providers/ ADSI properties security tab I have:

"connections will: <be made using this security context> Remote login:'subDomainAdminAccnt' With password: 'subDomainAdminAccntPassword'

Error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation.

Msg 7320, Level 16, State 2, Line 1

Cannot execute the query "SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn

FROM 'LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com'

WHERE

objectCategory = 'Person'

AND objectClass = 'user'

" against OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI".

Problems With Change Sql Permissions After Migrating Domain User/group Accounts Into Root Domain

Apr 5, 2007

I have a root domain and child domain.

After using ADMT to migrate the domain user or group into the root domain, when I use enterprise manager to try and change the permissions allocated to that domain user/group, i get the 'Error 15401 NT user or Group not found'.

This is a correct error as the user is now in the root domain, however sql (in sysxlogins) still thinks its in the child domain.

Is there a simpler way, other than collecting the users permissions, deleting the user from SQL then adding back in with the correct domainusername format, then adding the permissions back?

I tried renaming the 'name' in sysxlogins (not recommended) and while that worked, whenever I tried to add the migrated user to another database, the login name was missing and would not resolve.

I believe it is something to do with the SID not matching.

Any ideas on how to fix this ?

SQL Security :: Domain Migration Altered SA Or Domain Admin Access To DBs

Jun 19, 2015

we recently migrated from our in-house domain to the Enterprise domain. Everything went smooth except for the fact that I can no longer accept my dBs using my SA or my domain admin account. There is only 1 account I can get into the management studio with but it has no admin privileges, so I can't make any  password changes or add accounts. I don't have a test environment so kind of hesitant to experiment with our production system.

SQL 2012 :: Disaster Recovery Options For Multi-Database Multi-Instance Environment

Sep 23, 2014

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.

--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.

What I have looked into is:

1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

More often than not, I typically don't touch DTC on clusters anymore; however on a project where the vendor states that it's required. So a couple things here.

1) Do you really need DTC per instance or one for all?
2) Should DTC be in its own resource group or within the instance's group?
2a) If in it's own resource group, how do you tie an instance to an outside resource group? tmMappingSet right?

Multi-database Multi-server

Mar 27, 2007

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)

I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:

Dataserver A

Database A1

Database A2

Database A3

Dataserver B

Database B1

Database B2

Dataserver C

Database C1

Database C2

Database C3

I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3

Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.

Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?

Thanks,

Michael

Wewant to include DTS Packages under the definition of third partyapplications, insisting instead that the developers save theirpackages as COM Formatted files into their source code control systemsand run them from their app servers. The devlopers would like to hearthis from someone besides ourselves. While strong recomendations to remove guest access to MSDB altogetherabound, I have been unable to find a straight forward discussion ofthe advantages of structured file storage and app server off load ofDTS packages. Can anyone suggest any articles, white papers, rants, etc attemptingto formulate a solution to the benefits of taking msdb away fromguest, with the advantages of running DTS from an App server orworkstation platform, with the packages protected in source codecontrol?Thank youJohn Pollinsjpollins @ eqt . com

Log On Outside The Domain

Nov 7, 2007

A while back I asked this in the SQL security forum, but did not receive any replies. I feel that this is a fairly basic, common question, so I am posting it here in the hopes that this forum has higher traffic and that someone here will know the answer.

I am trying to connect as follows:

Server: Windows 2003, SQL 2005, on a domain
Client: Windows 2008 Beta, not on any domain

I created an account with the same user name as the domain user on the client machine. And then I logged in as that user and went to Manage Network Password. I entered the correct domain credentials. Verified that this worked for file shares. However, SQL does not appear to be recognizing this and it tells me:

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

I have verified that this domain account is working properly with SQL when the client is also on the domain.

Q: How can I get this Windows authentication scenario to work where the client is not on the domain and the SQL server is on the domain?

(Note: A similar case that can also occur frequently is that the server and client are on different domains.)
