Multi Instance Sql Server 2000, Coexistence SP3-SP4, Replication Issue?
Feb 1, 2007
Hi,
I've went throught the SP4 documentation but I didn't find a clear answer about how to deal with this situation:
In the situation of a multi instances server in which all instances are SP3a, can I just upgrade a couple of instances to SP4 and leave the others in SP3a ? .
One of the instances I may have to leave in SP3a belongs to a merge replication environnement (Distributor and Publisher), while the Subscriber is also in SP3 on a remote server (which I don't administer..).(the point is that in this situation I have to upgrade the 2 servers simultaneously)
In other words, when I 'll apply the SP4 to just one instance, I understood that the all the tools will be upgraded to SP4.
Will the merge replication involving a SP3 instance on the same server still work?
We have several servers that perform multiple functions (file and print server, SQL 2000 server and WSUS 2.0 server among others). These servers are located in remote locations and are connected across a WAN. We cannot upgrade the SQL 2000 because of an older application that doesn't work with SQL 2005. Currently we run WSUS 2.0 using MSDE and have no problems. I have upgraded our main WSUS server to 3.0 and would like to upgrade these remote servers to 3.0. My question is can the new version of MSDE (Windows Internal Database or SQL Express) reside on the server along with SQL 2000 without causing problems? If I have to uninstall 2.0 and MSDE and then do a clean install of 3.0 that isn't a problem.
We have a SQL Server 2000 ent edition sp4 with 3 small databases and one 4 GB database which is REPLICATED The Server has been bouncing like a yoyo today because of a disk controller problem and I am preparing to move the Instance to a whole new server this afternoon. The new Server will have the same IP and name as the original server.
Any suggestions for the easiest or most seamless way to make this happen? preferably using Backup and Restore since they plan on taking the old server down completely and then building a new server with the same name and IP ... any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am having issues after installing SQL 2005 together 2000. SQL 2000 is working without issues, then I installed 2005 with a new instance so I did not lost my SQL 2000. After the installation has finished, I rebooted the server and when I want to open "SQL Server Management Studio" menu of SQL 2005, this menu is not present. I uninstalled SQL 2005 again and perform an installation once again but this menu isn't present. (Now, SQL 2005 is uninstalled). Even more, I compared the folders created for SQL 2005 in another server and they are different. Seems that the installation is not complete... Can be?
What should I review? Any help is greately appreciated!!
Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.
--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition --We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately --Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic -- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.
What I have looked into is:
1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable 2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances 3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.
The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server. There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'. I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> However, I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried: <add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used: <add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> but this doesn't work either.
Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated Thanks...
I have 2 SQL server installs for 2008 R2 configured as multi instances. I have a product called Esri ArcMap 10.3 that can be used to generate a database. When I run the wizard against one installation, the wizard successfully creates the database. When I then run the same against the other installation it fails with the following error [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Invalid cursor state
I've attempted to look at the configuration of each using select * from master.sys.configurations
From this I found several differences
Successful Mulit instance Optimize for Ad hoc Workloads – False Max Degree of Parallelism - 0
UnSuccessful Multi instance Optimize for Ad hoc Workloads – True Max Degree of Parallelism - 4
I attempted to co-ordinate the differences running the wizard for each iteration but it always failed with the same error above. The error always seems to occur when a particular store procedure is run. There are quite a number of scripts run prior to this and are technically under the covers and only discovered via tracing, in this case using SQL Profiler. I don't have access to individual scripts that I can run incrementally to replicate the issue. I have to rely only on the Esri Wizard.
Reviewing the error against several forums suggests that this is an ODBC error but the trace I ran using SQL Profiler finds that the driver used is Native.
My question then is "What are the conditions that would cause this error above (Invalid Cursor)?" "Is there other configuration settings that are not captured via the SQL identified above?" "Could this be caused by mapped drives for data, Logs and Temp?"
Is it possible to install 2 SSAS instance (one default and one named) and have them access a single sql server instance (default) all on the same server?
Using Management Studio (April CTP), I tried to connect to integration services. There was no server listed, so I added my computer jaargeroxpctp and this went fine.
I have figured out that SSIS installs once for as many instances of SQL Server 2005 as there are on the machine. I also figured out that even if there is only a named instance on the machine, it will always install under the "Default" machine named instance.
I also figured out that you can change the instance viewed by modifying C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSBinnMsDtsSrvr.ini.xml
What I am unclear about is that in SQL Server 2000, each Instance had an MSDB db which stored all of the jobs. In SQL Server 2005, each instance still has an MSDB DB but theSSIS also has a MSDB DB ?? or is this pointing to the MSDB for the instance specified in the xml file???
There is not much info out on this at all and would be good if the MSDB help explained this install once so it would all be clear!
THanks for any help... thank goodness for newsgroups!
I am currently having publisher(database A), subscriber (database B) and distributor on the same instance for a test environment that is using a uni directional transactional replication. Now I need to setup another unidirectional transactional replication in the same test instance but for a different database. Publisher database is D and subcsirber database is E.
Hi All! I setup MS SQL Server 2005 first and then I setup MS SQL Server 2000 with instance 'Myname' and the I created 2 database in SQL Server 2005 and 2000, When I Write an application in .NET 2005 to connect to MS SQL Server 2005 it ok, but it's not ok in sql Server 2000 and appear the error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Snapshot isolation transaction failed accessing database 'TustenaOS' because snapshot isolation is not allowed in this database. Hi,I have SQL SERVER 2000 SP4 Enterprise , Windows 2003Enterprise onXeon 4 Processors (now with multi-threading CPU) and I havequestions whichseem weirds to me (used to have the same config withoutMulti-Threading) as following:1. Is this because ofmulti-threading CPUs ?2. when use SP_WHO2 ACTIVE ,2.1 Result has user SPID , which blockitself(it is UPDATE and SELECTstatements, most often)2.2 Result has user SPID , show morethan one result rows withthe same processe and command3. when use Properties of SQL Server , it has anerror 15407 in log.many thanks in advanceNiponW
If I have a job that runs every minute, and that job happens to take more than one minute to run on occassion, will SQL Server start a second instance of the job or will it be serial - one after another ?
I am trying to set up a Named Instance of SQL 2000 on the same machine that has a default instance of SQL 7.0. The setup always completes and I am able to register the Named Instance of the SQL Server with which it was installed on. However, when I try to connect the users to the database, with both windows and SQL authentication, I receive a SQL server not found error. I have tried an alias setup as well as physically specifying the port number in settup up an ODBC connection. Has anyone ran into similar problems? Also, has anyone been able to successfully complete the process as mentioned above?
Hopefully someone can help me. I am trying to upgrade SQL 2000 on a Win 2000 SP4 server to SQL SP4. The server has 2 instances. The one instance upgrades fine with no issues, however when I try to upgrade the 2nd instance I get "<instancename>" is not a SQL 2000 instance. I am a bit stumped so any help in this regard will be much appreciated
I understand most of the concepts for the Active/active setup. I am setting up a 2 node cluster. My question is can I use the default instance name (one default instance name per group) when setting up each instance or do I have to use named instances . I am assuming that since each group is a virtual machine that I can get away with using the default instance, but I cant find any documentation to confirm my frequently wrong perceptions.
I want to set it up like this
Instance1 Group
Group resources Default SQL Instance Name Installation Preferred Owner Node1
Instance2 Group
Group resources Default SQL Instance Name Installation Preferred Owner Node2
I have an instance VSdotNet for SQL Server 2000 on my machine. Now I want to create another instance called NetSDK, so that the NetSDK and VSdotNet exist side by side.
Hello,we use two instances of the ms sql server 2000 (Version: 8.00.760) on a4 processor windows 2000 (sp 4) machine.A dts-packet on one instance completly blocks the work on the otherinstance. Both instances have 2 dedicated processors. The twoprocessors of the blocked instance are in idle states. How is this possible? Has someone had the same behavior of the sqlserver and found a solution for this problem? Thanks in advance for answersJürgen Simonsen

We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?
I had a big problem on connecting sqlserver remotely from other machines on the network .....
From any computer in the network i wanna to register the instance of the sqlserver from the enterprise manager ..... the server instance doesn't appear within the available sqlserver list (the servername which equal to my machine is the only one that appear) ..... when i manualy write the servernamealias manually and i choose the connection type and then i write sqlserver username and password and then finish he give a message to me that access denied or sql server doesn't exist ... !!
by the way from the local machine i registered the local instance of sqlserver successfully and successfully i access the Databases .....
To be noted:
I previously uninstalled this alias and i then i reinstalled it again with the same name and i attached the previously exists Databes.
in the same time i installed on the same machine sqlserver 2005 connectivity clients not the server itself.

I have an interesting situation here. I have a SQL Server 2000 database which is attached to SQL Server 2005. The database (SQL 2000) however only has service pack 3 applied. I need to apply SP4 before I can move forward with SQL 2000->2005 upgrade. The question: can I somehow apply this support package with my current configuration or should I install full SQL 2000 front-end anew (which I don't have at the moment)? Whenever I try to run SQL 2000 SP4 it complains "SQL Server 2000 is not installed on this machine."
The server I try to install the update is Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition x64. SQL Server 2000 database itself is x86 (obviously).
Hi,Is it possible to install on a Windows server 2003,SQL SERVER 2000 in the folowing configuration :SQL server 7.0 as a default InstanceandSQL server 2000 as a named instance. Thanks for your answer.

I have a SQL 2000 clustered environment with 4 SQL instances and i need to remove a specific instance from the cluster the resources(physical drive, virtual IP,instance name) being used by it
We are trying to quickly put together what needs to be accomplished to install a named instance of SQL Server 2000 on an existing production server (also running SQL Server 2000). It appears as if the install will require a reboot. Can the reboot be postponed until after-hours without impacting the default instance of SQL Server?
Also, I see that if certain services are stopped prior to installing sp4 that you can avoid a reboot. However, if we are unable to stop these services (DTC, for example) without impacting the default instance of SQL Server, will the default instance of SQL Server experience any issues if we postpone the post-sp4 reboot until after hours?
