Multi Processor OS Restriction?
Jul 23, 2005
Hi, Ive been told this, but I hope it is NOT true. I have an sql
server2000 installation running on a server that has four processors.
It is on a active network but is not the domain controller so
essentially it is fully dedicated to servicing the needs of sql
server, (a bit of browsing, a bit of ms Office, but almost wholly
dedicated to sqlserver. Now, the big question, why, when the server
properties have been set to utilize all four processors, can any one
job never get more than 25% of cpu time? I can launch multiple
instance of QA and run the same job on each one and that will utilise
more and more cpu time, but if you launch multile QA windows from
within one insance of QA, you can NEVER get more than 25% CPU
utilisation. Now i have to run a job (FTS is a good example,
re-indexing lots of db's another, or even a huge query with multiple
ufd's on computed cols which I hoped would grab lots of CPU time that
they need, but no. So do I have to live with this or can I tell either
windows or sql server to grab more cpu when it want to ie use my spare
CPU capacity more efficiently or am i working on a misguided premise
and 25% per job is your lot?

I know this won't be a lot to go on but, we has a quad processor box that is doing a lot of sql crunching. When we turn off three of the processors it runs the SQL queries faster. The requests are comming from COM objects. CPU, Memory, page faults, all that stuff is fine. Also SQL dosen't appear to be using all the processors as only 1 has any amount of usage?. Any suggestions of where to start would be most appreaciated.

Howdy all. I have a query with bizarre results in Query Analyzer.
Box1; 4 x 3.0 processors, 4 gigs of RAM. Results never come back.
Box2; 8 x 3.0 processors, 16 gigs of RAM. Results never come back.
Both of the above boxes are extremely under utilized. The absolute max amount of CPU being used is 25%. Box1 had 1 gig free RAM and Box2 had 7 gigs free RAM.
Box3; 1 x 3.0 processor, 1 gig of RAM. Results in 15 seconds.
Box4, all the same as box 3.
I took a backup of the DB and restored it from box to box to box, so I know everything is identical.
I once had a deadlock issue where I had to use the maxDop hint and tried that here, but it didn't help.
All ideas are appreciated.
TIA, cfr

Hello all,
Has anyone else experienced random SQL timeouts and checked the processor usage and found that processors 0 and 1's usage patterns are mirrored (when one goes up the other goes down)? We're running into this all of a sudden.
SQL 2000
fairly small db and very low usage at this time < 100 connections/hour.
only web services, SQL 2000 running on the machine, SQL 2005 is installed but currently stopped.
1GB memory
Windows Server 2003 SP 1.
2 processors (dual core) in use.
SQL Usage of the processors according to performance monitor becomes an exact mirror where proc 0 goes high proc 1 goes low, if proc 1 is 25% then proc 0 is 75%.
Thanks
Bob

I am running a query on a SQL Server 2005 database and encounter the following error message
"Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor encountered an unexpected error during execution."
There is a join between a table on the 2005 database and another on a 2000 database. I have run DBCC CHECKTABLE and found no errors on the two tables.
Anybody with ideas?
Thanks

I'm inserting rows from one table to another and trying to figure out how to not allow nulls from one field. ie - the feeder table can have nulls, but when I insert into the other table, I don't want the records that have NULLS in one field to insert. I hope that's clear.

Hello all,
First of all I would like to show my satisfaction at this great forum.
I'm quite a beginner at SQL and would like to ask a question.
Let's say I have a table of Students and a table of Subjects with their respective details. Now I want to create another table that references both the previous tables so that I would know what subjects the Student is attending. My problem is how to put a restriction in the new table on the number of subjects that each student can have (e.g. each student can only apply for 8 subjects, not more).
I've heard about triggers and other possible solutions, but it's too advanced for me at the moment, so I'd like to possible find a solution through the new table.
Roughly, I guess the new table (let's call it StudentAttends) will have the student id from the Students table and the subject id from the Subjects table. Now how should I add the above restriction?
Thanks for your help!

I have 2 installations:1. W2k with MS SQL 2000 sp2.2. W2003 with MS SQL sp3.There are two databases in all instalations: "maindb" and "userdb". Thetable with data is in maindb. In the 1'st installation I restict user access to all data in table in thisway:- create user's login and user in databases maindb and userdb.- create view in userdb with "where" clause as dbo (dbo is owner of thisview). This clause restict access to data. (create view userdb.dbo.table asselect * from maindb.dbo.table where ...)- add user to group "Public" in maindb.- add role "data reader" to user in userdb.- effect: user can access data only by view, can not access any data inmaindb.I do the same in secound installation:- effect: user can not access data by view - message like this: "userhave not permission to select on maindb.dbo.table"Is this bug in sp3 or in sp2 ?Is there another way to horizontal restrict access data in tables? In Sybase ASE this method (restict by view) works ok. And there is newproperty of ASE 12.5.1 - administrator can define context of login - the"where" clause will be added automatically to any select. Please help me. Thank You for any advice.

SQL Server 2005 9.0.3161 on Win 2k3 R2
I receive the following error:
"Error: 8624, Severity: 16, State: 1 Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan. For more information, contact Customer Support Services."
I have traced this to an insert statement that executes as part of a stored procedure.
INSERT INTO ledger (journal__id, account__id,account_recv_info__id,amount)
VALUES (@journal_id, @acct_id, @acct_recv_id, @amount)
There is also an auto-increment column called id. There are FK contraints on all of the columns ending in "__id". I have found that if I remove the contraint on account__id the procedure will execute without error. None of the other constraints seem to make a difference. Of course I don't want to remove this key because it is important to the database integrity and should not be causing problems, but apparently it confuses the optimizer.
Also, the strange thing is that I can get the procedure to execute without error when I run it directly through management studio, but I receive the error when executing from .NET code or anything using ODBC (Access).

Hello
I have the following table, and i need to know, what kind of Constraint-restriction and how to apply using management studio for the next case
Table ITEMSProperties
===============================================================================
ItemID (PK-FK) ValueType (PK-FK) PropertyValue (NVARCHAR)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1 1 (1=Color) Red
1 2 (2=Date) 01/01/2001
2 1 Blue
2 2 021/badStr/08badstr
Well, so ..
If I don€™t want bad Dates-Strings stored in this table, for the ValueType = 2, .. What kind of constraint-restriction or maybe a trigger, I need to use and please tell me how to aplly using management studio ?

About a month ago I restored a data base that had been originally created in MSDE into a full version of SQL Server 2000. I thought that the size restriction would automatically be removed by putting it into the full version of SQL. I was wrong and about a week or so later the data base reached the 2GB size and needed attention. I received some assistance through Microsoft and they walked my client through the process of removing the size restriction. Since then everything has been OK.
Now I am doing something similar. My client has a data base that was originally created in MSDE. We upgraded them to SQL Express and the data base has now grown to 4GB which is the max that SQL Express allows.
We will be installing SQL for Workgroups this week.
My question is this. Is there a setting I must change inside the data base or in SQL for Workgroups that will allow the data base to grow beyond 4GB? We need to let it expand to whatever they need and I cant seem to find any documentation on whether or not I have to change a setting for this data base.
Thanks for your help. Jean

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.
--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.
What I have looked into is:
1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

More often than not, I typically don't touch DTC on clusters anymore; however on a project where the vendor states that it's required. So a couple things here.
1) Do you really need DTC per instance or one for all?
2) Should DTC be in its own resource group or within the instance's group?
2a) If in it's own resource group, how do you tie an instance to an outside resource group? tmMappingSet right?

Hello,I am trying to construct a query across 5 tables but primarily 3tables. Plan, Provider, ProviderLocation are the three primary tablesthe other tables are lookup tables for values the other tables.PlanID is the primary in Plan andPlanProviderProviderLocationLookups---------------------------------------------PlanIDProviderIDProviderIDLookupTypePlanNamePlanIDProviderStatusLookupKeyRegionIDLastName...LookupValue....FirstName...Given a PlanID I want all the Providers with a ProviderStatus = 0I can get the query to work just fine if there are records but what Iwant is if there are no records then I at least want one record withthe Plan information. Here is a sample of the Query:SELECT pln.PlanName, pln.PlanID, l3.LookupValue as Region,p.ProviderID, p.SSNEIN, pl.DisplayLocationOnPCP,pl.NoDisplayDate, pl.ProviderStatus, pl.InvalidDate,l1.LookupValue as ReasonMain, l2.LookupValue as ReasonSub,pl.InvalidDataFROM Plans plnINNER JOIN Lookups l3 ON l3.LookupType = 'REGN'AND pln.RegionID = l3.Lookupkeyleft outer JOIN Provider p ON pln.PlanID = p.PlanIDleft outer JOIN ProviderLocation pl ON p.ProviderID = pl.ProviderIDleft outer JOIN Lookups l1 ON l1.LookupType = 'PLRM'AND pl.ReasonMain = l1.LookupKeyleft outer JOIN Lookups l2 ON l2.LookupType = 'PLX1'AND pl.ReasonSub = l2.LookupkeyWHERE pln.PlanID = '123456789' AND pl.ProviderStatus = 0ORDER BY p.PlanID, p.ProviderID, pl.SiteLocationNumI know the problew the ProviderStatus on the Where clause is keepingany records from being returned but I'm not good enough at this toanother select. Can anybody give me some suggestions?ThanksDavid

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)
I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:
Dataserver A
Database A1
Database A2
Database A3
Dataserver B
Database B1
Database B2
Dataserver C
Database C1
Database C2
Database C3
I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3
Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.
Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?
Thanks,
Michael
