Multi-table DataSets In VS2005 SRS Report Designer

May 7, 2007

Hi all,

I need to use a multi-table dataset as a datasource for my report items in a SRS2005 report.

But from designer, I can only see the first table.

Can any one tell me if it is possible to use multiple tables in a dataset for SRS report?

Thanks,

Samson

'Dynamic Time(year, month, date)' Report Template (rdl) Using Report Designer VS2005

Jan 19, 2007

I have three types of specific reports that i have to create with the input parameters (range) either

1: By date (rdl 1)

2.By Month (rdl 2)

3.By Year (rdl 3)

Is it possible ( or how do I ) to create just one report template ( one rdl) with the three sets of parameters ( hiding/invisible which ever two sets base on user selection) and the output of the report will display the desired type( either by year, month or date).

I ask this because its possible to create a drill down report from year down to date etc in report designer (vs 2005). Not sure if I can create one instead of three rdls and with the 'logic' built within that template.

Thanks

Multi Value In Report Parameter Using MSVS Report Designer.

Aug 14, 2006

Hi All,

I have a question, How to user the Multi value in Visual Studio Report Designer.

My dataset contains the following

Select empno, empname, basicpay, deptcd from employee where deptcd in (substring(@gdept,1,4))

Here variable gdept is the report parameter. I am passing the value.
it works fine with single value.

( the source of gdept is a another dataset to list the deparment code+name,

Example

DEP1 - COMPUTER

DEP2 - ADMIN

DEP3 - FINANCE

)

when I preview, i have a combo box to select the department.

If I choose one deparment, it works fine.

If I choose more than one department or select all I have error message

"substring function requires 3 aruguments."

what is wrong is the query

Please advise.

Cheers,

Saleem

Unable To Connect To SQL Everywhere In VS2005 Designer

Jun 22, 2006

I've just downloaded SQL Everywhere CTP, installed the mobile framework 2.0, and attempted to build a the sample on Steve Lasker's blog http://blogs.msdn.com/stevelasker/archive/2006/06/12/SqlEvCTP.aspx.

However, when I attempt to create a new connection to the Northwind.sdf file in VS 2005 designer, I don't get SQL everywhere (or mobile) in the list of available datasources.

If I choose "other" and ">NET Framework data provider for OLE DB" as the Data provider, I can then choose "microsoft SQL server 2005 Everywhere Edition OLE DB provider for Windows", but when I browse to the database file and click ok, I get "Multiple-Step OLE DB operation generated errors...No work was done". Clicking the "Test connection" button reports success.

CLR Stored Procedures && VS2005 ASP.NET Designer Support?

May 31, 2006

I have successfully created CLR stored procures using c# and SQL Server 2005. Now I want to use the CLR stored procedures with some ASP.NET controls. I can add the CLR stored procedure to the dataset designer and have it add a new table adapter but it does not list the columns in the designer view. This forces me to code the column references manually into the controls (tried: DropDownList, GridView).

I can deal with adding the columns manually for controls using a CLR stored procedure, but I want to make sure I was not missing something, am I?

BTW: TSQL stored procedures work as expected (show columns in the dataset designer)

thanks!

Two Multi-value Parameters That Are Bounded To Dynamic Datasets (using Vbscript.)

May 1, 2008

I have a report with a multi-value parameter that gets its values (value and label fields) from a dataset that is built at runtime (from vbscript code that returns a string).
When I press 'preview' all works fine.
When I add another multi-value parameter that (like the first parameter) gets its value from a dataset that is built at runtime (from vbscript code that returns a string) and press 'preview', I get a strange behavior:
The second parameter is disabled until I choose an option for the first parameter.
I do not pass value from the first parameter to the second and the two variables have 'Null' in the default values and 'from query' in the available values.

Why does the second parameter is disabled and how can I avoid it?
Thanks in advance.

SSRS Report Rendering Different In VS2005 And In Report Viewer Via URL Access

Apr 17, 2008

Hello,
I'm using Reporting Services to render a text (stored in sql as varchar(max)). The text is all plain text, with some lines having trailing spaces.

Source text file i've imported to SQL via SSIS:
CLIENT: 10055
STATEMENT 2007
DATE:1002993
THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT
COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3
TRY THIS

*Note the trailing spaces on the line before 'STATEMENT 2007'.

I've designed a report using the Report Project in VS2005 to retrieve this text via a stored procedure. When I test the report using the 'Preview' tab in the IDE, it looks good
CLIENT: 10055
STATEMENT 2007
DATE:1002993
THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT
COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3
TRY THIS

But when I deploy the report and run it using URL Access:

CLIENT: 10055
STATEMENT 2007
DATE:1002993

THIS IS THE OTHER STATEMENT

COLUMN1 COLUMN2 COLUMN 3
TRY THIS

On all lines with trailing spaces, they (the trailing spaces) have been removed. This is affecting my formatting of some reports and statements. We really want to use the report viewer as it has built in paging, print and export capabilities.

Why does it look okay in VS2005 but different in Report Viewer via URL Access and Report Manager?

Note: When I export as PDF, it looks okay.

The stored procedure I use to return the data is a CLR Hosted assembly as below:

Code Snippet
Partial Public Class StoredProcedures
<Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure()> _

Public Shared Sub GetPagedDocument(ByVal inText As SqlString)
Dim dr As SqlDataReader
Dim row As New SqlDataRecord(New SqlMetaData("RowText", SqlDbType.Text))
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("select cast(doc as varchar(max)) as 'DOCTEXT' from testdoc WHERE id='" + inText + "'")
Dim cn As New SqlConnection("context connection=true")
cn.Open()
cmd.Connection = cn
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsStart(row) 'initialise the resultset to be returned
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader
'If no records in result set, return.
If Not dr.HasRows Then

row.SetString(0, "There is no document to display or you do not have permission to view the document.")
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsRow(row)
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsEnd()
' SqlContext.Pipe.Send("There is no document to display.")
Return
End If
'Read rows in the result set
dr.Read()

'Get the entire text
Dim docText As String = dr.Item("DOCTEXT")
'debug
row.SetString(0, docText)
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsRow(row)
SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsEnd()
Return
'end debug

End Sub
End Class

Any help will be appreciated.

Modifying A Report Created In Report Builder In The Report Designer.

Jun 30, 2006

After I use the report builder to create a generic report, how do I actually get that report into the report designer so that I can modify it more effectivly?

The issue that I have now is that the file on the report server is not a .rdl file and if I simply save it as one and then bring it into VS to modify it the code file is a html structure rater than a XML file type.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Custom Assembly Behaves Differently In The Report Designer And Report Manager

Mar 18, 2008

Hello everyone,

I created a custom assembly using C# to transform some binary data into text, and in this assembly I used one win32 dll developed by our customer to help me to do the tranformation.
The code I used to call the win32 dll is like below:
[DllImport("tdasuie.dll", EntryPoint = "AlrtLogConditionToText",
ExactSpelling = false, CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)]
private static extern UInt32 AlrtLogConditionToText(Byte[] pbCondition, StringBuilder pszText, UInt32 dwSize);

I defined a C# method to call the above win32 method and return a string. Then in the report, I called this C# method to get the correct string.

In the report designer, the C# method in the custom assembly can return the correct string in the preview window. But after I deployed the report into the report server, the textbox will only display "#error" in the report manager web page.

Can anybody help me on it? Thanks a lot.

Using Two Datasets In A Report

Feb 25, 2008

hello everyone!

i have a report in which i use two datasets
the problem is that when i was using only one, there wasn't any scope argument you know, to tell in which dataset i am , because there was only one and all fields and cells in my table returned me the correct values

but as soon as i add the second data set and i drag and drop the datasets fields in my table

instead of having for instance

Code Snippet

=Fields!Consultant.Value

or

Code Snippet=(Fields!Consultant.Value, "dataset1")

it automtically applies the function "first"

Code Snippet=First(Fields!Consultant.Value, "dataset1")

and i don't understand why

please can you give me precious help on this

because it returns me the name of the first consultant only and if i deleter the function first in the expression, the report doens't work anymore

2 Datasets In One Report?

Nov 29, 2007

Dear Experts,

I have a problem regarding my report.

Can we use 2 datasets in one report (tabular or chart, either one)?

my report get its data-fed from OLAP database (Cubes) and Oracle tables.

Let say the cube contains the actual sale (all aggregated and query using MDX) and the Oracle table contains the budget value for specific period.

And I am trying to construct a tabular like this:

date item type Revenue Budget Actual (Sale - Budget)
Jan calls regular 2000 1800 200
Jan calls super 3000 2500 500
Feb calls new 1000 900 100
Mar calls super 4500 4000 500
..... and so on

The data for date, item, type and Revenue are available in the OLAP (cubes) and the Budget value is available in Oracle table and we can't afford to transfer the Budget value to the cube.

Is this possible in SSRS? Please let me know if more information needed.

Thanks very much

Report Designer &&> PRINT ONLY A SECTION OF THE REPORT

Oct 18, 2007

Hi,
I dont know if theres a way to print a section of some report, for example a summary report, where I have several charts and tables, and I want to print just the first 2 charts
Could this be done by mapping the document or separating it in some other way?

I tried using 'SubReports' control, but this way I need to have for example the first two charts in a different report (lets say 2charts.rdl), and then in the summary.rdl, add the control and set the link to 2charts.rdl,.... but I think this is pretty annoying considering the future modifications of the format in the 2charts.rdl...

Thanks for your help...

Payslip Report With Multiple Tables/datasets

Jan 14, 2008

A report I am currently working on is a payslip report.
This report has multiple tables on the page, each linked to their own specific dataset.
Eg I have Taxable Allowances table linked to a dataset that returns information relating to any taxable allowances for an employee, then Non-Taxable allowances, Deductions and so on...

Taxable allowance dataset example

SELECT
TA.TaxableTrDesc,
TA.TaxableTrText,
TA.TaxableSubQty,
TA.TaxableTrRate,
TA.TaxableTrFact,
TA.TaxableSubTtl
FROM
Employee E
INNER JOIN TransCurrentMaster TCM ON E.EmployeeCode = TCM.EmployeeCode
CROSS APPLY udfReportTaxableAllowances(E.EmployeeCode, TCM.PaySequence, ) TA
WHERE
E.EmployeeCode IN (@EmployeeCodeParameter)
AND TCM.PaySequence IN (@PaySequenceParameter)

The report works fine when you select one employee.
Currently when you try to select more than one employee, all the employee results are displayed in the tables, for example, Taxable Allowance table contains all taxable allowances records for all employees on the one page...
I'm not sure how I can amend this report so that it is able to be run for multiple employee records...
Any ideas, thoughts, feedback would be much appreciated..

Cheers

Problem Using Stored Procedures In Report Datasets

Apr 26, 2007

I have a local Reporting Services report that I am modifying to use a stored procedure.

Although I am executing a stored procedure in the dataset query window, I also have to run a SELECT statement to retrieve the fields from a table that will populate the report.

The code that I have in the dataset query window looks like the following:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EXECUTE @retCode = RunClaimVerification @parmID, @parmDate, @parmRecordID OUTPUT

SELECT *

FROM ClaimsDetail

WHERE ClaimRecordID = @parmRecordID

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I execute this code, the only results that are returned SEEM TO BE the return code associated with running the stored procedure.

I thought about putting the SELECT code in the stored procedure and returning a table or a cursor from the stored procedure BUT it looks like tables are not supported as Report Parameter data types.

The stored procedure code generates Claim data that is stored in a SQL Table. The fields in this SQL table need to be retrieved by a unique record id to populate the fields in the report.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to go about doing this OR any suggestions that would help me resolve this problem?

Report Render In VS2005 Slower Than Stored Proc

Aug 10, 2007

I have searched many forums and found some cases of people also reporting slower rendering in RS than in Management Studio / Query Analyzer. However, none of the other solution suggestions seem to make a difference for me.

I'm a VS/VB developer and have got multiple reports built -- all using stored procedures on the backend -- that all take many times longer to run than if executed via Management Studio (SSMS). My simplest proc takes a couple of parameters (no defaults included) and does a simple select against one table with a few joins. Nothing complicated. It runs in 8 secs for 6867 rows via SSMS. Through RS (running locally through Visual Studio 2005 at this point) it takes around 25-28 secs. Yet, when I'm in the report on the DATA tab (not the PREVIEW tab) the run takes the expected 8 secs ?!?!

All reports are behaving this way.

I am not using cursors.
I have no default values on parameters.
I have added the "WITH RECOMPILE" to the proc statement.
I have "SET NOCOUNT ON" as the first line of the proc.
I hate to say this, but I even connected the proc to Crystal Reports to see how it behaved. It ran in the expected 8 secs.

I've seen some mention by someone that perhaps this is a known issue of RS that it reads the proc twice. Any truth to this?

Also a couple posts have traced and demonstrated that the report is generating significantly more data "reads" via RS than through SSMS.

We're a shop that is considering a switch from Crystal to RS, but we do everything through stored procedures. I need to clear up this issue before I can go forward recommending a switch. I'm including a copy of a typical proc below for review... What am I missing? What's the deal here with RS?

Reporting Services : Report Using Two Datasets From Two SSAS Cubes

Mar 5, 2008

Hi,

I would like to build an SSRS report from two different cubes (SSAS 2005). These cubes are contained in two different SSAS databases.

To do this, i created a dataset for each cube throught MDX expressions.
These datasets use common parameters defined in my report.
Thus, i try to integrate in my report chart datas from the two datasets, but my chart only target one dataset.

Is it possible to create a kind of dataset view to join my two datasets ?
Or is it possible to join the cubes from two different SSAS databases in an MDX expression to put all my datas in a single dataset ?

thx for your help.

Multi-value Parameter In Master Report Passing To Single Param Sub-report In A List.

Here's tricky one.

I have a fairly complex report that was given to me that was hard coded for single parameters. There is a dropdown for each market (created from a query in SSRS). The users have to run for each market each week.

Is there a way to use this report as a Sub-report inside a list of a master report and then use a mult-value parameter?

I want this multi-value parameter to build the values for the list and then run the "sub-report" for each value.

Essentially, I want to create a for each loop.

Any ideas?
