Multiple/Duplicate SQL Server Worker Processes

Nov 18, 2005

I don't even know where to begin looking... I have a page that loads multiple web user controls...
I know I use one connection object class that is used in all my objects when executing the query (calling Stored Procedures).
The problem is when the first page is rendered and each user control queries the database (SQL Server),
it eventually slows down.  In my controls, I use a lot of repeaters and internal queries per each repeater item.
So I know it hits the database quite often.

Problem is when I look in SQL Server Enterprise Manager Process Info, I have multiple worker processes sleeping.
My first thought is ASP.net is creating a new session connection (process) to the SQL Server?  Why?  How?
What do I do to check either my code is creating the connection object properly.  Thanks!

Larry

Debugging A Worker Thread Inside SQL Server

May 5, 2006

Hi Everyone!

Just started looking into Assemblies within SQL Server in the hope of creating a multi-threaded application and when writing a basic test assembly I came across the following problem...

When I create a worker thread within my assembly I am unable to do the following in my newly created thread:

Stop on a breakpoint in VS2005
Use Debug.Writeline to output to the output window

I know the thread is running as I am able to write to the EventLog, but VS2005 seems to be unaware of any thread other than the main SQL server thread.

If anyone could tell me whether there it is possible to debug non-SQL server threads, whether I am doing something wrong, or whether I should be doing things differently that would be great!

Thanks in advance for any help!!

The code is as follows (apologies as its not very well written!):

using System;

using System.Data;

using System.Data.SqlClient;

using System.Data.SqlTypes;

using Microsoft.SqlServer.Server;

using System.Threading;

using System.Diagnostics;

public partial class StoredProcedures

{

/// <summary>

/// This stored procedure starts the comms

/// </summary>

[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure]

public static void StartComms()

{

try

{

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Comms is starting");

// Create the thread to run in the main thread class

Thread zThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(ThreadFunction));

// Start the thread running

zThread.Start();

// Sleep to let the other one run

Thread.Sleep(2000);

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Comms is about to wait for thread to finish");

// Wait for the thread to complete

zThread.Join();

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Comms is ending");

}

catch

{

throw;

}

}

/// <summary>

/// The main thread function

/// </summary>

public static void ThreadFunction()

{

try

{

// Flag to keep thread running

bool bRunning = true;

// While the thread is running

while (bRunning == true)

{

// Output some debug output to show the thread is running

Debug.WriteLine("Thread function running");

System.Diagnostics.EventLog.WriteEntry("SQLServerThreadTest",

"Thread function is running");

// Sleep for two seconds

Thread.Sleep(5000);

}

}

catch

{

throw;

}

}

};

SQL Server 2014 :: Eliminate Duplicate Rows When Joining Multiple Tables

We have the below query which is pulling in Sales and Revenue information. Since the sale is recorded in just one month and the revenue is recorded each month, we need to have the results of this query to only list the Sales amount once, but still have all the other revenue amounts listed for each month. In this example, the sale is record in year 2014 and month 10, but there are revenues in every month as well for the rest of 2014 and the start of 2015 but we only want to the sales amount to appear once on this results set.

DAO &> SQL Server Processes

Oct 24, 2005

I need to know exactly what VBA lines Create and Destroy SQL ServerProcesses - i.e. those visible in Enterprise Manager under Management[color=blue]> Current Activity > Process Info.[/color]Why?I am experiencing strange behaviour with Processes that are createdwhen I create a DAO Database Object with the following line:Set m_ResDatabase = DBEngine.Workspaces(0).OpenDatabase(strDSN, False,False, strODBC)This creates the process as expected.However the following lines don't always close the ensuing Process:If Not m_ResRecordSet Is Nothing Thenm_ResRecordSet.CloseSet m_ResRecordSet = NothingEnd IfIf Not m_ResDatabase Is Nothing Thenm_ResDatabase.CloseSet m_ResDatabase = NothingEnd IfIf Not m_ResWorkspace Is Nothing Thenm_ResWorkspace.CloseSet m_ResWorkspace = NothingEnd IfIt seems as if SQL Server keeps hold of the first two Processes andthen will release any subsequent ones.Can anyone shed any light in this - or any good web pages where Imight find some answers?Regards Chris

Max Worker Threads

May 31, 2007

Here's what I know about max worker threads:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187024.aspx
http://sqlblogcasts.com/blogs/thepremiers/archive/2007/05/17/max-worker-threads-configuration-in-sql-server-2005.aspx
and this is kind-of related:
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070529-microsoft-exec-next-version-of-windows-to-be-fundamentally-redesigned.html

How do you know how many threads are being used and how many of those are being shared? Or whether they are all even being used? Are there PerfMon stats for this?

Max Worker Threads / I&#39;ve Read...

Nov 20, 1998

that if you reduce your max worker threads it will enhance the ability to kill processes (spid###) which cannot be killed.

Recently, we have been experiencing runaway processes. If you run these processes continuously, eventually it will run without failure. We are investigating as to the reasons why this is happening. At this very moment I am sifting through the code to try and find an answer. Evidently, the process hangs and cannot be killed. We are then forced to down the server and I wish not to do this so often. If I reduce the max worker threads from it's current number now (512) to a lesser number. Will this help? and if so, by how much should this number be decreased.

Thanks a gig for your help.

How Can I Kill Sleeping Processes In SQL Server?

Sep 14, 2006

Dear, Our ASP.NET scripts send SQL statements (as inline SQL or SP) to process the requested job. After the job execution, the process ID stays in the server and waits for next command with sleeping status.Since this process does not go away, next job adds another process and eventually, the server is overloaded with these processes and dies. How can I kill this sleeping processes?Regards,Echo

XML Services And SQL Server Orphaned Processes

May 1, 2007

Hi

Wanting to know how do you detect and kill orphaned spid in SQL Server left behind by an XML service which was not completed normally. The client requests an XML service which open a connection, and due to network problem the client did not manage to call the another service which suppose to end the connection. Thus leaving behind in SQL Server orphaned spid which continue to hold locks. This created problem when the next user wants to access the resource.

The simplest way is to get all spid which are holding locks for more than a certan period and kill them. Is there a better way to actually detect orphaned spid?

Help much appreciated.

SQL Server 2008 :: Processes That Update A Certain Column

Oct 26, 2015

I have a table and a specific column inside this table. I know this table is being updated, by using sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats, I was able to determine this, by some process (stored procedure / SQL Job / etc), but the problem is, I am not sure what process is doing it.

How would I search our SQL Server 2008 database to find any process that manipulates this table / column (I only care about Inserts / Updates and Deletes, but do not really care for SELECT).

Duplicate Records In Multiple Columns.

May 21, 2008

Hello,

I have a question regarding duplicate records, the thing is I'm able to query for duplicated records if I type the following:

select ColumnName from TableName
where ColumnName in
(
select ColumnName from TableName
group by ColumnName having count(*) > 1
)

That gives me duplicate records for one column, but I need find duplicate records in more than one column (4 columns to be exact), but the way I need to find these records is they all have to be duplicate, what I'm trying to say is I don't don't want to find the following:

First Last Age Email
John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com
John Smith 26 jsmith@hotmail.com
John Smith 25 jsmith4@hotmail.com

I need to find the following:

First Last Age Email
John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com
John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com
John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com

So all the columns must be exactly the same, that's the only condition I want to show the records, is there any way to do this?

For the record, I'm using MS SQL Server 2000, thank you.

Filtering Multiple Duplicate Record

May 2, 2014

I am new in SQL programming world, following is query that i had created

select interfaces.nodeid as 'Node Id',
nodes.caption as 'Node Name',
netflowsources.Lasttime as NetflowLastTime

from interfaces inner join nodes on interfaces.nodeid = nodes.nodeid
inner join netflowsources on interfaces.interfaceid = netflowsources.interfaceid

where netflowsources.LastTime NOT LIKE GETDATE()

which is from that query i get a return successfully, but i just noticed that, for column nodeid was showed me multiple duplicated records, for example

nodeid value = a,a,a,b,b,c,c,c,c,d,d,d

But what i expected was to get a return without any duplicate record within it. and i also have tried using "distinct" command, but that only impacted on "a" value, but others value not change at all.

Multiple Session IDs Inserting Duplicate Records

May 6, 2015

Have a table that is used during a conversion. It is hit pretty heavily with inserts by mulitple session ids. For performance reasons I cannot add a unique constraint on the column that is getting duplicates (it is an encrypted cell in varbinary).

I do not want duplicates in this Encrypted Column. So before each insert the insert programs reads the table and verifies that the Encrypted Column value does not already exist. But unfortunately several duplicates are falling through the cracks. What are my options for not allowing duplicates?

Asp.net Worker Process Runs Out Of Memory When Using A Large Dataset

Feb 27, 2006

Hi,
I'm running an application on a server which grabs data from a database table on another server using SqlConnection, SqlDataAdapter and DataSet.
The application then updates every row in that DataSet's DataTable and the updates are saved back using DataAdapter. The code is pretty much straightforward code that you would find on MSDN documentation for using DataSets. The table contains a little over a million rows.
When I run the application, I get an error saying the Server Application is not available. Upon looking into the application event log, I get this message.
aspnet_wp.exe was recycled because memory consumption exceeded the 306 MB (60 percent of available RAM)
How do I get round this? I thought DataSets were supposed to handle large datatables comfortably without having memory issues.
-Thanks

IO Completion Listener Worker Appears To Be Non-yielding Message

Aug 3, 2006

We are using SQL Server 2005 (not on SP1), and keep getting the following message in the SQL Server log:

IO Completion Listener (0x15e8) Worker 0x00B7E0E8 appears to be non-yielding on Node 0. Approx CPU Used: kernel 0 ms, user 0 ms, Interval: 35092.

After receiving this message, the server slows down considerably and we receive numerous messages saying:

SQL Server has encountered 61 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file [xxxxx.MDF] in database [xxxx] (22). The OS file handle is 0x00000CDC. The offset of the latest long I/O is: 0x000000fa21a000

I have not been able to find any documentation or explanation of what the IO Completion Listener message is about or how to correct whatever problem is causing it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

SQL Server Down: Process ID 121:406 Owns Resources That Are Blocking Processes On Scheduler 4.

The following question applies to SQL Server 8.0.2187 (2000 + SP4+916287/914384/898709/915065/915340):

We have now twice had an incident where the same SQL Server has stopped responding. The only workaround is to restart the SQL Service. After this occurs, the log is filled with the following messages:

2007-09-10 16:42:14.29 spid3 Process ID 197:320 owns resources that are blocking processes on Scheduler 1.

2007-09-10 16:42:14.31 spid3 Process ID 74:324 owns resources that are blocking processes on Scheduler 5.

We haven't been able to pinpoint a cause or reporduce the problem on a dev server. I've seen several posts about this issue online but not many answers. Does anyone have any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Ranking Duplicate Contacts Using Multiple Columns

Jun 8, 2015

I'm in the process of trying to identify duplicate contacts. I doing this for millions of contacts and have gotten stuck and could use some elegant solutions!

The business rule is this:

Any contact that has the same name, phone and email address are the same contact
Any contact that has the same name, and email address are the same contact
Any contact that has the same name, email address, but different phone are a different contact.
Any contact that has the same name, email address, and a blank phone can be the same contact as one that has the same name, email address, and has an email address
Rank by the DataSource_fk. 1 being the highest

Put another way:

If 3 contacts have the same name, 2 have phone '1112223344' and all three have the email address 'johndoe@gmail.com' they are the same contact and the lowest DataSource_fk should be ranked the highest.

I've used the Row_number over (Partition by) in the past, but am unsure how to deal with the blanks in email and phone.

DROP TABLE [dbo].[TestBusinessContact];

Table Loads From DB2 - Parallel Processes, Linked Server, And Lightweight Pooling Issue

Aug 17, 2007

Hello. I have a 32-bit SQL 2005 (SP1) server that is my current Production server. I also have a 64-bit SQL 2005 (SP1) server that will become my Production server. I have several SSIS packages that load/refresh data on a nightly basis to a few of my databases from DB2 (MVS). I have the packages setup on the current Production server (32-bit) and all is working well through the Microsoft OLE DB provider for DB2. However, on the 64-bit server, I am experiencing some issues with the SSIS packages failing due to large loads. Loads that are loading tables with 500K, or less, data seem to run without issue (through SQL Agent Jobs). But, larger table loads are failing.

I do have a linked server set up on the 64-bit server to the 32-bit server, for other processes. And because of this I have lightweight pooling turned off on the 64-bit server (because of distributed querying). Lightweight pooling is turned on on the 32-bit server. Could this be what is causing some of my issue? Since I don't have the lightweight pooling option turned on (on the 64-bit server), am I not getting the proper amount of through-put for my 8 dual core CPU server?

Thanks
Scottye

Hello,

Everything appears to have installed correctly except for the fact that when I start SQL Server Management Suite I get 2 copies running in the foreground. The last copy of the SQL Server Management Suite shows a dialogue box that contain a warning sign (yellow triangle) with no text but an OK button is in the dialogue box. When I press the OK button, this instance of SQL Server Management Suite kills itself. The first instance is now given window focus and it brings up the "Connect to Server" dialogue box. I can connect to my local server and run a script to add columns to the database. But everytime I bring up SQL Server Management Suite, I always end up with 2 copies running and I have to hit the OK button to get rid of the second copy. Can anyone help me get ride of this annoying problem?
