Multiple Parent Table Question

Hi,
I've a question about how to implement a scenario, and would appreciate any suggestions anyone cares to offer.
I'm creating the following tables
FutureContract
Equity
These (and others), may have an option placed on them, I was planning to create seperate option tables for each
i.e.
FutureContractOption
EquityOption
With a FK pointing at the PK of the tables above.
However the data held in the option table looks the same for both, and I'm considering trying to use the same Option table for both the FutureContract & Equity tables.
There is a problem here with the Foreign key referencing the Primary key of the parent table.
I could add two foreign key columns and allow them to be null, so that only one is entered, however we can have an option on a lot of different things, so I might end up with a great list of these columns.
Table - Option
FK - FutureContractPK
FK - EquityPK
I'm using an unique number (identifier) column for the primary key of all tables.
I'm sure this is a relatively common problem, and would be grateful for any suggestions about how I might approach this.

Sorry for the confusing subject. Here's what im doing:I have a table of products. Products have N categories andsubcategories. Right now its 4. But there could be more down theline so it needs to be extensible.So ive created a product table. I am in the process of creating a Report, and in this, i need ONLY the row groups (Parents and Child).I have a Parent group field called "Dept", and its corresponding field is MacID.I cannot create a child group or Column group (because that's not what i want).I am then inserting rows below MacID, and then i toggle the other rows to MacID and MacID to Dept.

I am working on a project where I have a page that will have a parent record (Product) and then 1 or more children (options available for the product, user enters text to define) displayed in a table/gridview. There is a relationship defined in the database between the product and options table). My question is how can I allow the user to add the product info and then within the same page also add the options and only then save it all? The options will added to a table. Thanks for any help

I have a parent package "A", I also have 4 child packages "B","B1","B2",B3"
In BIDS, I created a file connection in the package "A" to connect to the child packages. So whenever I want to run B1 or B2, I change the path in the file connection to point to B1 or B2 and so on. Since the developement environment is File system this works perfectly fine.
But in the Test / Production environment all packages are stored in the Sql server. How can I paramaterize the child package connection so that I can use configuration / variables to select which child package to execute.

Starting with "How to: Use Values of Parent Variables in Child Packages" in the SQL Server 2005 Books Online (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345179.aspx), it seems I need to create a separate package configuration in the child package (of type parent package variable) for each variable I want to pass from the parent to the child. Is that really so? The XML configuration file type allows me to specify any number of variables; how do I do that with the parent package variable?
For that matther, why doesn't the Execute Package Task simply allow me to specify the values of child variables (or other properties) directly? It seems SSIS has made something as trivial as a series of function calls completely opaque:
MyChildPackage(var1=1, var2="foo");
MyChildPackage(var1=2, var2="bar");
MyChildPackage(var1=3, var2="baz");

I have a single complex query.

The query repeats the Header row value for all children associated with the header.I need the output of the query in XML format such that..For every Header element in the XML, all its children should come under that header element//I am using -

This still repeats the header for each detail (in the XML) , but I need all children for a header under it.I basically want my output in this format -

I've 2 tables QuestionAnswers and ConditionalQuestions and fetching data from them using CTE join and I'm seeing repetitive rows (not duplicate) like, If you have multiple answers for 1 question, the output is like

I want to eliminate the repetitive question and group them as parent child items.

I need to add a child table that will tell us who the participants counselor is, what I did was I did a Make Table query based off the primary key of the Parent table and made that the link (foreign key) for the People_tbl and the Counselor_tbl, so if the counselor changes then the user adds the record to the counselor tbl and then puts in the Effective date. The problem is that when I run a report it doesn't show the present counselor always shows the old counselor?

I have two tables that are related by keys. In Master tabel i have these date datas

SO when i try to load from Master table to parent and child table i am using using expresssion like

If i use this Expression i am getting the current system date data's only from Master table to parent and child tables.
My Problem is If i do this in my local sserver using the above Expression if i loaded today date and if need to load yesterday date i can change my system date to yesterday date and i can run this Expression.so that yeserday date data alone will get loaded from Master to parent and child tables.
If i run this expression to remote server i cannot change the system date in server.
while using this Expression for current date its loads perfectly but when i try to load yesterday data it takes current date date only not the yesterday date data.
What is the Expression on which ever date i am trying load in the master table same date need to loaded in Parent and child table without changing the system Date.

I have one main Table "MainTable" which I want to relate with "subTable1, subTable2, ..." in such a way that:
"ith subTable" have to be related/joind on "ith row" of the "MainTable", "jth subTable" have to be related/joined on "jth row" of the "MainTable" and so on...
What I want Actually?
I want that when ever I delete a Record in the "MainTable", The corresponding "subTable" have to be deleted Itself.
I thought a solution that, I can cerate a Trigger on Delete of the "MainTable" and it would delete the corresponding "subTable". But I dont know how to ceate that.
Secound solution what I thought is, that may be there is some majic power in the Table Joinings. That I might join "MainTable" row with "subTable" ( ofcourse that I dont know either :))
So my question is, that what is the actual solution for my problem?
What ever solution is please give me a sample also with that. Like in a Trigger how can I write some Expression which can delete the "subTable" for the Currunt delete Row.

Hello all gurus out there.
I'm an entre level junior programmer. My question is kind of confusing but I'll try to put it as simple as I can.
First we have a main table called "job1". This table consists the order information. The file_id is the unique id and the primary key for this table. This table also pertains other information such as customer data (max limit 5), job data etc. This table is actively (non-stop) used throughout the day.
We have a non-interactive process which will take customers information from the main table and insert into the child table table "jobcust". Jobcust would have file_id, cust, cust_type. For example, if Job1 table had fiel_id=100 and cust1="Tom" and Cust2="David", now Jobcust will have two records file_id, cust1 and file_id,cust2. The main problem is the child table needs to be updated right away and our non-interactive process is good at doing that.. but it is causing a major DATA LATENCY. I would like to ask you all, if you know any better way of doing this without any process.. like in the back end with a trigger/procedure or something like that.
All you help is appreciated.

I have made an SSRS report using the recursive parent functionality to show a hierarchical tree of values. The problem I have is that some children have more than one parent, but because (in order to use the recursive parent nicely) I need to group the results by Id, I only see distinct entries. This means that I only see each child once, even if it "should" appear in multiple locations in the report (under each of its parents).

Hello, I have a Stored Procedure which insterts into Orders table. Orders table is the parent table, with primary key OrdersID. I also have a child table, Client, with foreign key OrdersID. I want it to insert the data into the orders table, and at the same time insert the OrdersID into the FK of the child table. Any info would be appreciated. I have no idea how to do it.
My SP is as follows:ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.jobInsert
@ClientFileNumber varchar(50),@Identity int OUT

hi,
i have two tables with parent/child relationship - pipeline and pipelineStatus. the select statement like this:
SELECT *
FROM pipeline INNER JOIN
pipelineStatus ON pipeline.id = pipelineStatus.parentID
i got multiple records for each pipeline.id because of multiple records of pipelineStatus. Is it possible to get only one record for each pipeline.id with last record of pipelineStatus table?

Hi everybody,
I know that it is possible for one column to reference two different parent tables by defining two foreign keys on a same column, I have done it and SQL Server does give any error. But I want to know that is it advisable to define multiple foreign key on a column referncing two differnt parent table's primary key in differnt case... ? Means If Case 1 then It should reference to column1 or table1 otherwise it should reference to table2? How is it practicle...?

I am trying to update a parent table with a summation of its child records. The child records are being deleted because the transaction has become invalid because payment was made with a bad check or there was a posting error. So a rollback of sorts is required.
Here are is the DDL for the tables and DML for the data:

I tried to use a Merge statement with an ON MATCH for each TransType, but it complained that I could not have multiple update statements. OK. So I tried a MERGE with single update statement with a case and it complained that I was updating the same parent multiple times, which I was and want to! So, I tried the following update statement and it still does not work, though no error message.

Hi,
I have tables parent - PurchaseInvoices and child - PurchaseInvoiceDetails. I have trigger in PurchaseInvoiceDetails that would update stock qty based on Location code stored in parent table - PurchaseInvoices upon INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE.
I also set table RI to have cascade delete. I faced problem that, when I delete record in parent table, it would cascade delete child table. Trigger in child table fired and try to update stock qty. However, in this case, trigger unable to locate parent table record anymore.
How to overcome this? I can't move my stock update code to other place since I got to update stock if any changes happen to child table.
Please advice.
